Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

His usual tricky self, not much in the way of passing, but he needs to find consistency in front of goal.

BBC were raving about his finish. It was well controlled, but I am not convinced he meant to nutmeg the keeper at all.

that'd be an interesting prospect. If only he'd moved to Burnley and we could have all got Trippier again.

WBA have a terrible run-in, so they need to win now. Think they will be good this weekend

But why is Bellerin so popular when he's just gonna lose his spot to Debuchy. Zouma hasn't put a foot wrong and is in on merit. Bellerin in cos of injuries

Bellerin is in on merit too, Debuchy is now irrelevant, he's out for months. Cahill offers stronger competition than Chambers

        Foster - Myhill
Terry - Fonte - Bellerin -PVA - Haidara
        Sanchez - Hazard - Silva - Sterling - ADM
        Aguero - Kane - Zamora

Could swap Fonte and Zamora for Aldy and Ayoze.

Settled on this team now. 😛

They do, and they have rubbish fixtures

I think they will stay up though, mainly due to the awfulness of Villa and Hull. I can see myself going for Kramaric when the time's right

Sturridge won't start yet either, but keep some cash spare because he will be an option eventually

Sturridge is the best striker. But back from injury, fixtures are bad, and team is inconsistent.
Giroud is playing for the best team and fixtures are good. But finishing can be inconsistent, and there's a chance Arsenals mids could hog the points.
Austin is a decent striker playing for a terrible team, with mixed fixtures and a blank + double GW.

We really need a sticky or hot-topic on the Zouma and Bellerin situation.

Its simple, there both there on form or lack of form from their competitors. As they are young and new there is always the chance they could dropped or rotated due to fatigue or poor performance but for now they own the spot.

Slight difference that Arsenal's first choice for the spot (Debuchy) is injured. Zouma is trying to unseat a regular first team player in Cahill.

Bell is fairly nailed on for..Chambers is his only competition and he can't really play right back

Zouma has Cahill as his competition so I would say there will be a lot of rotation there with Jose easing Zouma in.....although Jose has said he doesnt like too much rotation.....

Both have whats considered a first team player ahead of them who's either injured or off form yeah but in both cases i see it as unlikely they will be dropped due to their performances.

yeah..and in theory Zouma would likely to be dropped in tough away games where they might need the more experienced player?

having said that Zouma did play against City but still.....

Trying yes, and succeeding at that, has garnered the plaudit of pundits and fans alike since his debut. Great pace on the lad, and compliments JT's traditional CB role very well. Cahill's absence is warranted, he's been one of the worst players in the Chelsea XI this season (along with Willian).

Mou is also known be stubborn with the CB partnerships, so when he makes a change it's very likely said dropped player has been lackluster. Cahill has been lucky there's hasn't been much competition to dethrone him, now that tables have turned I sense only good things can come from this young chap

the only problem with Bell is that there are so many good attacking options at Arsenal it's hard to fit him in

        Midfield strategy:

        Are you guys going with:

        1. Power five - all big hitters priced at 8m and above?

        2. Power four - four big hitters plus a cheapie eg Walters/Elia

        Hope you can help 🙂

power 4 but with Cork as my 5th....someone like Walters/Elia is too much for a bench fodder mid imo

Power four + a playing mid better than Boyd/Ameobi etc for the upcoming DGW and blanks... This is something I need to rectify myself.

I can't afford a mid like Walters for my 5th spot without my attack/defence suffering.....seems crazy to have 5 odd million tied up in someone who will warm the bench apart from one gameweek no??

Instead of spending cash on a better 5th mid, did you consider having a better 4th defender and playing four at the back when necessary?

        A few questions gang please:

        1. Walters - chances of him playing as central striker over next 6 weeks?
        2. Giroud - is he nailed on as no 9 as Sanchez and Wellbeck have played there?
        3. Clichy - open to rotation? Best starter in City defence?
        4. Eriksen - buy him now for the two hard fixtures or wait for doubler?
