Captain Sensible – Gameweek 33

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again tonight. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

This week’s Poll is something of a landslide, with Sergio Aguero’s return to form persuading just under 49% of voters to back the City frontman as West Ham pay visit. In spite of his double at Old Trafford, it’s fair to say the Argentine has toiled in front of his own fans this term – he’s netted in just four of his 12 Etihad appearances, with only one double-digit haul (albeit a monster 19-point return) at home all season. With Big Sam’s men conceding in all but one of their road trips, David Silva (3% votes) looks a real differential candidate, having served up 37 points (17, 11, 9) in his last three Etihad showings.

Palace duo Glenn Murray (17%) and Yannick Bolasie (5%) are amongst the most-favoured options as Alan Pardew’s side look for a fifth straight win this weekend. Six goals and four assists in his last six highlights Murray’s sublime form, with the 5.2-priced striker racking up three successive double-figure hauls ahead of the Baggies’ visit. Bolasie’s 24-point return at Sunderland has kick-started an almighty bandwagon – over 88,000 FPL managers have snapped up the midfielder, who has now delivered three goals and four assists in his previous four. Bearing in mind that the Baggies have shipped ten in their last three, Tony Pulis could struggle upon his return to Selhurst Park.

Harry Kane is just ahead of Eden Hazard (7% to 6%), despite his recent patchy form. Three blanks in the last four have diminished his armband appeal but a trip to Newcastle looks the ideal opportunity to return to scoring form – four of Kane’s seven double-figure hauls have been on the road this term. The Magpies have just two clean sheets in 20 league fixtures now and look unlikely to improve upon that record, judging by their insipid display at Liverpool on Monday night.

Hazard’s home encounter with United has deterred many. With a goal or assist in five of his last six, there’s no doubt the Chelsea winger is one of the most consistent options around, though it’s worth nothing that he’s scored in just one of his last seven at Stamford Bridge. Given that the visitors have just two clean sheets in their last six road trips – at QPR and Newcastle – Jose Mourinho’s men will be confident of getting amongst the goals on Saturday evening.

Elsewhere, the likes of Leighton Baines and Romelu Lukaku sit around the 1% mark as Everton entertain Burnley. The Toffees have four clean sheets in five at Goodison and with Sean Dyche’s side scoring once in the last six, a clean sheet, at least, looks on the card for the Merseysiders.

Evening chaps. I'm not getting much time to look at the fantasy atm, so your help will be appreciated.

Got 2 FT's, £0.7m in the bank and a wildcard still. The main question is would you wildcard in GW34 or the week after (to prepare for GW37 one)? Cheers

    Myhill
    Ivanovic, Bertrand, Wollscheid
    Hazard, Silva, Cazorla*, Eriksen
    Aguero, Remy, Kane

    (Myhill, Ameobi, Naughton, Bellerin)

Could save it as it would only take you a hit to get 3 Liverpool.

Could WC after to fix your team, or GW37 for Arsenal. WC is worth more than 4 points at this stage, so I wouldn't WC unless you're making more changes.

General consensus is to wildcard in 34. That is what I'll be doing. That then allows a 1 week punt on Murray, Bolasie, Puncheon or perhaps An Everyone defender.

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 32 RESULTS

As I post this, after seeing a forum post stating "Was Di Maria the worst signing of the summer?", I'm forced to reflect back and open my eyes to the realisation that Mario Balotelli has only scored one Premier League goal this season...

Anywho, the results ladies & gents!

    1st - Kalmoffit (58pts)
    2nd - Teekay 101 (53pts)
    3rd - Seb10 & Krzys (52pts)

Well done to you three! Close runner-up in the form of Ellelelle. Unfortunately as well, Reedy had 2nd place in the bag...if it wasn't for double Chelsea! A Hazard + Remy double up, bearing in mind Remy did not play this gameweek, cost Reedy an easy 2nd placed position!

No bonus this week as the FFS Scout Picks + Differentials scored 69 points in total. Good effort.

    With all that, still no movement at the top but Teekay 101 has climbed to 4th by himself to be red hot on Sticky Mockwell's tail - the table looks like;

    1st - FFS Scout (19pts)
    2nd - Mookie (16pts)
    3rd - Sticky Mockwell (12pts)

    Onto the next gameweek!

I have only 6 starters this week. No WC but 2 free transfers.

Is a 12 point hit to ensure 11 starters going too far? (really just a 6 point hit?)

It would be 12 as I'd be making 2 free transfers and 3 x 4 point hits.

This would also bring my double gamers for GW34 up from 3 to 7.

        - Sanchez to Fabregas
        - Sinclair to Bolasie (possibly a one week option with Henderson in next week as my one free)
        - Austin to Vardy

You should calculate how many points you're expecting from the players you're buying...some of the transfers might turn out really unnecessary, that's usually the case with cheap defenders especially.

Vardy is the most nailed on, but I do expect Kramaric to remain nailed on the bench with Nuge and Ulloa starting every game.

I have a planned wildcard, which allows enough money to bring in Giroud and Sanchez for GW35.

However, doing that leaves me with 0.0 ITB. That makes me nervous, since it's still a little while off.

Assuming I play my wildcard as early as possible, and make the Arsenal transfers as early as possible next week, it should be fine... right?

Incidentally, all that is contingent on me bringing in Bentekke for Kane... so we'll see if go through with it.

With a WC in hand, many seem to face the dilemma to pick either YAYA or Bolasie for one week.

I'M not quite sure myself, so I looked at the stats:

Yaya had 17 attempts to Bolasies 10 over the last 6 games. Although maybe (considering his more defensive position) predictably he only took 5 from inside the box to Bolasies 7 in that time.

Yaya averagely played further up the pitch when City had two strikers in the last 6weeks (which will be expected vs West Ham who sit deep). This speaks for the Ivorian but

..after Bolasies amazing performance last GW, I cheked if he played as centrally and as close to goal once before this season, which he did in GW29, when he had another two assists (in a 3-1 vs QPR at home).

Both seem like good options (Lennon has horrible attacking stats, he rarely shoots and loses out in all aspects to the others) but with Bolasies move to a no10 role and proof that he is able to replicate his output in this position (3 goals and 3 assists in 2 games there) I advice to go with the Congo International. He's in form, playing for the inform team with an inform striker and squaring up is WBA, the team that has conceded 12 and therefore, the combined highest number of goals in the last 6 Gameweeks!

Also Palace have scored 14 (just one less than leading ManUnited) to Citys poor 9 in the last 6games, which also underlines Bolasies better chance to assist - also backed up by his 3 assists to the 0 that Yaya had and by his 11 created chances to Yaya's 7...

All of a sudden, I think, it's quite obvious which way to go.
Although I like to spend my money, Bolasie is the clear favorite to score and assist this coming GW

Thanks, helpful analysis. I am in this boat. I have already acquired Murray on a 1 week punt, and have another free punt to use. I may double up on Palace with Bolasie or Puncheon ("his turn"), go with Yaya (powers loose balls in), but I am pretty sure that I will not take Fabregas or Mata as I feel that game will be a 1-0 score or thereabouts, and Lennon just does not do it for me.

      1. Dr. Agabuse
        • 11 Years

Why would it be "his turn"? Do you mean to score or to play the no10.
I don't believ that he will change Bolasies position after that route

To score. I think scoring tends to get spread out over time. I base on this on nothing other than years and years of following sports and playing fantasy sports (in other games, but it's really all the same...).

No prob. I do not know how they will be arranged on the field, although another article here suggested that Bolasie will stay behind Murray in that No. 10 role. I still think that there are pros and cons to taking either one, Punch or Bolasie, and if you are inclined to take a Palace mid, go with your gut. I am leaning towards Puncheon vs. Yaya.

Chaps.....I need to free up funds this week so I can go for Cesc next week, so:

Siggy > Punch feels good. Swansea are not scoring much, and I am not sure if they will have a decent finisher for Siggy's passes with Gomis out. Palace have 2 good matches coming up, despite the fear of Pulis revenge that seems to be a bit pervasive on the boards today. [I would like to have seen that Pulis power last week when I started Myhill and had Dawson off the bench for lame Remy.]

Cheers. Think I agree with you but it would see me playing Punch v Myhill and McAuley this week, which isn't good given that I'm in a head to head league?

Ah, I hear you, Karl. I am also in a h2h league, in addition to 2 mini leagues. I guess you have to figure out which is your #1 priority, and then make your tactical moves aligned with that, and then whatever happens...Something may have to give, but for me, I would choose one priority and go all out to maximize that outcome as opposed to trying to "pretty good" in all competitions.
