Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 34 – The Strong

We turn our attentions to the upcoming fixture list now and assess those sides with some favourable schedules over the next four-to-five Gameweeks. The upcoming double plays a part in our thinking, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester offering reason to retain their chief assets for the run-in.

CHELSEA

frisking
Jose Mourinho’s tactical masterclass against United ensured that the Blues are now just two wins away from lifting the title – a feat they could potentially complete this Gameweek courtesy of their double-header. A crucial showdown with second-placed Arsenal is first up, followed by a trip to relegation battlers Leicester, and most managers are likely to be holding at least two of the Blues’ assets prior to Saturday’s deadline. Beyond that, the Londoners are offered three favourable fixtures in the run-in (CPL, wba, SUN) to deliver the points again.

With Mourinho clearly happy to shut up shop and grind out results, doubling up on Chelsea’s rearguard looks a worthwhile option. Branislav Ivanovic is assured for most courtesy of his threat going forward, whilst John Terry also looks likely to deliver the points and may partner the Serb in a number of side’s backlines. Thibaut Courtois is also worth considering here as a result of his more economical 5.9 price tag.

In the middle of the park, Eden Hazard’s storming form has shown no sign of abating, with the Belgian’s winner against United taking his recent tally to three goals and two assists in his previous four appearances. He, too, should be nailed on for most, though Cesc Fabregas is also in the frame for inclusion having registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The 9.3-rated Spaniard’s prospects could also be aided by his past experience in the false nine role with his national side and Barcelona, as Mourinho may head into the Gunners clash without a recognised striker and be forced into a tactical reshuffle. Should one of Didier Drogba or Loic Remy prove their fitness in time, however, they will also throw their hats into the ring, with both appealing as differential forward options for the double, providing Diego Costa remains on the sidelines.

LIVERPOOL

frisking
Dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ outfit now resume league duties as they continue their push for Champions League football next season. Fantasy managers are sure to be scrambling for their headline assets prior to Saturday’s deadline with a double Gameweek now on the cards that offers two promising away dates at West Brom and Hull, though the schedule beyond that suggests that those who choose to invest should consider retaining their picks for the remainder of the campaign, with home clashes against QPR and Crystal Palace coming up in the final four Gameweeks.

With the best defensive record of any Premier League side in 2015, having earned eight clean sheets this calendar year, it’s more than a little surprising that the most popular option in the Reds’ rearguard currently sits on an ownership of just 9.5%. We can expect to see a hike in interest around the likes of Martin Skrtel and Simon Mignolet going into this weekend, however; Skrtel has collected 22 bonus points, more than any defender this season, whilst his aerial threat from set pieces boosts a clear attraction. The 5.3-rated Alberto Moreno is the alternative here, with the Spaniard’s 18 attempts on goal this term bettering any of his backline team-mates.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho each offer their own merits. Henderson’s recent surge in output has seen him deliver returns in five of the last six Gameweeks and offer excellent value at 6.7, whilst Sterling has a goal and assist in the last two league outings and was moved up front against Villa in a 3-4-2-1 for the weekend cup defeat. Sterling could retain that role if Daniel Sturridge is ruled out again, though Rodgers fielded Philippe Coutinho in a false nine role against Newcastle last time out and could utilised the Brazilian – who has scored in two of his last three in all competitions – centrally again if he moves back to 4-3-3.

LEICESTER

frisking
An unlikely source of Fantasy attention for the majority of the campaign, the Foxes recent performances, coupled with their impending double, has seen a swing in interest towards their assets over the past few weeks. The Midlanders head to a goal-shy Burnley side on Saturday for what should be a relegation dogfight, followed by a home meeting with Chelsea next Wednesday evening. With three attractive home fixtures (NEW, SOU, QPR) and trip to Sunderland left to play, there’s enough reason to believe that Nigel Pearson’s men can escape the drop, and plenty of reason to consider retaining our double Gameweek picks for the remainder of the campaign.

Ten goals in the last four outings is indicative of the offensive approach Pearson has recently instilled. Leading the way for Fantasy interest has been 4.6-priced striker Jamie Vardy, whose two goals and pair of assists have been integral to his side’s recent surge. With the equally in-form David Nugent a major doubt for the trip to Turf Moor due to a calf complaint, Vardy is likely to garner even more suitors. Esteban Cambiasso, who has earned returns in each of his last three appearances, is basically unrivalled for investment by any of his midfield team-mates and  is also on a number of managers’ radars, though Marc Albrighton, at 4.2, has started the last two on the right and has decent underlying stats.

The Foxes complimented their upturn in attacking output with a clean sheet against Swansea at the weekend, and with Saturday’s opponents Burnley having managed just a single goal in their last seven outings, further returns are due. Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position prospects make him the most likely route for managers to take, though Kasper Schmeichel in net has the potential for save points, whilst both Robert Huth and Wes Morgan have offered strong goal threat of late.

WEST HAM

frisking
A lack of motivation has seen the Hammers’ season stall over the course of the past two months, though their remaining fixture list should afford Sam Allardyce optimism. Away days at QPR, Aston Villa and Newcastle, married with the visit of Burnley, look very encouraging for Fantasy returns.

Whether that potential will translate into invest is another matter entirely, however. The Hammers have scored more than a single goal just once in their last 11 outings and faith in their attacking assets is understandably low. Their recent injury difficulties up top certainly haven’t helped matters, with Enner Valencia and Carlton Cole now their only two fit strikers. Stewart Downing, meanwhile, will be keen to reward those 21% of managers that have remained faithful to him with some long-awaited returns. The most likely source of investment is left back Aaron Cresswell, whose set-piece duties produced a goal against Stoke in Gameweek 32,and with the two weakest attacks of the past six Gameweeks on the agenda in the final run-in (BUR, new) defensive points can also be expected, making Adrian an option between the sticks.

Also Consider…

Man City
Manuel Pellegrini’s men steadied the ship with a solid 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday after recent losses to Burnley, Palace and United had thrown their top four credentials into jeopardy. The Citizens are presented with a strong schedule to round the season off, with three home fixtures (AVL, QPR, SOU) in their final five as well as a trip to Swansea to boost their Fantasy potential.

David Silva has returned to training and has been given the all-clear after being stretchered off with a possible cheekbone injury at the weekend and, although City will continue to monitor him, he could be back in contention against Villa. Sergio Aguero remains unchallenged for our affections in attack, with the 12.5-valued forward notching three strikes in the last two Gameweek – a lack of premium alternatives up front this week also works in his favour. At the back, meanwhile, City now have four successive home clean sheets and with Vincent Kompany currently sidelined, Martin Demichelis looks the most reliable starter for those keen to invest. Aleksandar Kolarov could also come into contention if Gael Clichy remains out through injury, though.

Arsenal
With Gameweek 33’s blank now gone, Fantasy managers’ love-affair with the Gunners’ main men can resume. The double Gameweek 37 is sure to be a factor when planning our transfers over the coming weeks, though acquiring our chosen assets sooner rather than later looks a wise strategy, with promising clashes against Hull and Swansea on the horizon beyond this weekend’s showdown with Chelsea. The Gunners’ rearguard will be keen to pick up where they left off with shutouts in three of their previous six outings, and David Ospina and Laurent Koscielny are likely to find their way into a host of sides in the coming weeks. Going forward, Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez – whose brace booked the north Londoners a place in the FA Cup final last weekend – are primed to reap the rewards of the kind schedule, whilst Aaron Ramsey’s pair of goals and assists in his last four league appearances suggest that the Welshman is also worth considering. With Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla also in the mix, finding the right balance to fit at least two of those three in before Gameweek 37 will be a principal concern for many.

Newcastle
Having lost six on the trot, it’s understandable that there’s little interest in the Magpies’ assets right now. That run of form has ensured that John Carver’s outfit are not yet assured of safety, though trips to Leicester and QPR could go a long way to deciding the relegation race, as will a trio of promising home fixtures (SWA, WBA, WHM). Daryl Janmaat bagged his eighth assist of the season in last Sunday’s loss to Tottenham and the marauding right-back still looks a tempting prospect despite his side’s miserable form. Further forward, 4.7-valued Jack Colback scored his fourth of the season against Spurs, and could appeal as a budget pick for those needing to free up cash for the big-hitting double Gameweek stars.

Southampton
Despite tasting defeat twice in the last three Gameweeks, the Saints are still in the race for Champions League football. A decent schedule sees Ronald Koeman’s men face a trio of strugglers in their next four (sun, lei, AVL), that could bring in points at both ends of the pitch. Owners of Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are likely to hold on even in face of the impending doubles for other sides, whilst Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle will remain on our radars as differential prospects.

    Folks, thoughts on this draft?

    Schmeichel Panti
    Ivan Terry Skrtel PVA Duff
    Hazard Silva Sterling Henderson King/Albrighton
    Kun Giroud Kane

One option i'm toying with is keeping Murray and then doing Murray > Giroud in GW35 - but would have to use a precious FT doing so. Usually like to save FT after WCing.

I'd be tempted to have Vardy in there. Leicester very attacking and he is the main man in that attack. I don't have him but think I might wish I did

Definitely agree with Vardy being the main man - if I were to have him in my team, he would take Giroud's place...but back to the same issue of having to use an FT right after WC as I would like an Arsenal attacker for GW35.

You reckon I should just go with Vardy and use the GW35 FT for Arsenal attacker? Saving could come useful.

Cheers MFB - tempted to go with Murray/Vardy as my 3rd striker but don't want to let the DGW blinders affect future team performance...Giroud in will be good enough for the run-in imo.

oh u are on wildcard..i would not keep murray then since he has a tough game after this GW and palace. would want giroud straight away if u are not considering vardy. its not bad to have giroud considering arsenal will attack to win the game.

u might want benteke in the near future too..its better to save an FT then consider a future swap of kane/aguero->benteke. u might also want to ditch a chelsea defender etc after gw35

I considered an attack trio of Kun-Giroud-Benteke before the Spurs game...

But reconsidering selling Kane now. Not just because he scored, but because it was 89 min of torture and mental anguish hoping he wouldn't score! Surely he and Kun are set to be on a shoot out for the golden boot now.

Current plan if all goes well

            GW35 - save
            GW36 - Sterling > Ramsey
            GW37 - Silva + Hendo/Albrighton > Ozil + Sunderland mid punt

But definitely might ditch Chelsea defender if the league is wrapped up.

Might as well go with Skrtel for the security of starts, goal threat at set pieces and baps. Though Moreno is very good from open play. Flip a coin mate.

If you need the cash for future transfers, Moreno. But if you have transfers lined up that can be afforded with Skrtel, go Skrtel

How is this looking for DGW lads?

    Migs*
    Skrtel* JT* Wolly
    Cesc* Hazard* Sterling* Silva
    Kane Giroud Kun

    Myhill Clyne Cawson Sameobi

    -4 hit taken

Very nice. Ignoring all Leicester assets completely?

Sterling is a good shout imo. If reports or presser says Sturridge unlikely to return...would definitely consider captaining him.

Have no room for Lei players Shifty. Had 2 FT's and gone for 3 Liverpool players with a hit.

I think Vardy is great shout this GW but I'm happy with my front line

A quick comb of WCers this week.

You had Silva and Sanchez pre-wildcard. Have you

    A) Kept both
    B) Kept Sanchez, dumped Silva
    C) Kept Silva, dumped Sanchez
    D) Dumped both
    E) Kept Silva but dumped Sanchez and replaced with Ramsey/Ozil

This is my only dilemma for the double. Silva has slightly better form over the last 6-10 games but Sanchez has a double coming up. I may dump him and use Giroud instead as my Arsenal attacking option as I have Bellerin and Ospina.

    Hey fellow DZers,

Have a lot of conflicting thoughts about my wildcard. Currently ranked 2k overall and I'm tempted to lose Kane...

    ----------------------- Schmeichel ---------------------

    ------------- Azpil -- Moreno -- Schlupp ------------

    ---- Hazard - Sterling - Coutinho - Fab - Silva ----

    ------------------- Aguero ---- Vardy --------------------

Subs: Ospina - Giroud - PVA - Yoshida

What do people think of this WC team? Is it worth risking dropping Kane considering his ownership?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just threw him in at the end there, have Alderweireld at the moment, Yoshida only in if he is confirmed out for the season.. Any advice for a cheapie? Hull?

Would you get a Hull defender instead of Schlupp or change the goalies?

Would it be better to downgrade a midfielder(Silva?) and leave 4mil in the bank to do Vardy > Giroud next week?

Similar thoughts here, but have come to the conclusion that despite his tricky fixtures, he is still joint top scorer in the leage, crazy cheap and the main focal point of a top 6-7 side. I'll likely be benching this week since sot is a toughie and it's all about the DGWers, but then his next 4 aren't too bad from an attacking sense.

I like the rest of the squad though. Probably lose Yoshida though as I don't see him getting much if any gametime. Also, Azpil is a risk for starting both in the DGW - can you squeeze out enough for a Terry switch somewhere?

What do you think of this rehash?

        ------------------------- Courtois ------------------------

        ------------- Bruce -- Moreno -- Schlupp -----------

        ---- Hazard - Sterling - Coutinho - Fabregas ----

        ------------------- Aguero ---- Vardy --------------------

Subs: Gilks - Koscielny - Cheap Mid - PVA

Leaves me 7.6mil in the bank.. which is enough to do Vardy > Giroud in GW35 and Fab > Sanchez in GW36

        What do you think?

Nice. I still think Terry is the best defensive CHE asset all things considered so if you are set on Fabregas then maybe do Courtos & Bruce -> Migs & Terry and then downgrade Kos so you can still afford getting Giroud and Sanchez later on.

    Last one for the day....

Only 8 DGWers (unless I start McShane over one of the big boys), but feel I have most of the good ones and am reasonably setup going forwards.

Plan would be to save next week and get Giroud in the week after.

Nah, although if he is confirmed fit in the presser I'll likely be getting him in and sacrificing Sanchez until the DGW. I think it'll be too soon though unfortunately, and therefore he's too expensive a risk for the DGW, imo.

Yeah, same thinking here. I've been toying with Remy all week, but there's too much uncertainty at the moment, and with Costa more likely to be fit for LEI, just having Remy for maybe ars and then facing the axe after rules him out for me. I need Costa or Remy ruled out for both games to change my mind i think.

Yeah, much of a muchness I guess. Would likely only play them in GW36 when Skrtel has a toughie, and McShane has the better fixture then. Also, if any of my 11 miss out this week I'd have a DGWer coming at from 1st sub. At least that was my thinking amyway.

I'm not a fan of expensy keepers either, but I think Jose will keep it tight and he's the cheapest route in there. Was struggling to get 3 CHE and 3 LIV otherwise.

    Hey all,

Not sure if this time still counts as DZ time but I'd like some input either way as I'm struggling to make a decision.

This is my current team after using my 2 FTs - http://imgur.com/rayAisd

I know for certain that Bellerin will become Skrtel for -4 because I'd like 3 x Liverpool and would like to offload my last remaining Arsenal player before I get 3 attackers in for 37.

Here's where it gets tricky because Remy is somewhat of a headache. These are the options I'm considering:

    A) Remy to Vardy (-8 total) and stick with only 2 Chelsea players - Getting Terry in would mean more hits for Arsenal attackers

    B) Remy to Vardy and Silva to Fabregas (-12 total - means playing Kane but can get Giroud straight in for Vardy)

    C) Remy to Vardy and Boyd to Fabregas (- 12 total - bench Kane and have to take a hit to get Giroud)

    D) Stick with Remy and just go with 6 DGW players

    It's worth noting some things:

Even if I go the Silva to Fabregas route I will have to take a hit to get 3 Arsenal attackers (same as scenario C). Additionally I know that -12 seems like a lot but it would cut my mini league lead rank from 44 to 32 but also put me 5 DGW players ahead of my closest rival who would have to go -12 to get into the same position.

Sorry for the wall of text - any thoughts?

    1. Sebbo29
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 15 days ago

it all depends on the Remy news but even if he is available it is not guaranteed that he will play in both games. With Chelsea recently parking the bus I am not keen on keeping. I would therefore go A. -12 is too much imho. And for Arsenal: I would not mind one -4 hit to get to 3 Arsenal players in DGW 37. If you take the hit after 36 you should make up for the lost points in 37. I am planning the same myself.

Sorry for the long reply 😉

I think Fabregas is worth the extra -4 over Boyd (-12 total) but it's whether that is worth benching Kane for - not sure it is, although Southampton are pretty solid.

        Tough decision!

Do you still think -12 is too much when it puts me 5 DGW players ahead of my closest rival? (Sterling, Henderson, Skrtel, Fabregas, Vardy)

ok reading it again now: it depends on your priorities. If your mini league is most important then I would also say -12 is not too much. But if it's OR then -12 is too much imo

Benching Kane is always risky but finally it would come down to Fabregas vs. Kane so in that case C might be best for you. B I would not do because I really think Silva will play and I would keep him vs. Villa

you are right: it's a tough decision! wish you good luck!

Yeah I think Silva stays regardless - really like City's fixtures.

Mini league is the only important thing so that's why I'm leaning towards -12.

I'll try and wait for press conferences but price changes are going to start forcing my hand soon!

    Bench two?

    A) Sanchez (CHE)
    B) Giroud (CHE)
    C) Cambiasso (bur, CHE)
    D) McShane (cry, LIV)

    Got Terry and Ivanovic.

I would love to do that. That would give me 10 DGW + Agüero and allow me to keep the two Arsenal big guns on the bench.

I think most people will think that's madness though.

Normally I'd say bench one of A/B plus D but I guess you bought Cambiasso & McShane for the double? Then only A & B is logical. if you get in 2 players for the double then I'd rather play them

Well yes. Although McShane at 3,9 is pretty much an enabler for the rest of my team even if I wouldn't play him this week.

And yes, I'm on wildcard at the minute.

Ok this is what I have on wildcard so far, going to go 4-4-2 for DGWK...

    Courtois (Hamer)

Terry - Skrtel - Moreno - Schlupp (Bellerín)

    Hazard - Sanchez - Sterling - ?- ?

    Kun - ? - (Kane)

Either going to punt on Hernandez or Vardy as my second striker.

Don't know with those two midfielders - Would have 10.3 to fill them with Hernandez or 12.3 with Ulloa....

Double Chelsea and Pool defence? Hmm, could be worth a look. Chelsea are grinding out results without a striker and Pool don't score that many.

      Vardy, Cambiasso, Grealish?

Grealish may be a punt too far, even for yourself 🙂

someone shared a link earlier about him struggling to be fit for WBA.

At most, i reckon he'll be rated as a doubt with a chance. Wouldn't go anywhere near him in that case.
