Scout Scribbles – Sturridge Could Be Out for Season

Daniel Sturridge could miss the rest of the season for Liverpool. Hull could welcome back Mo Diame for this evening’s encounter with the Merseysiders. Diego Costa remains a real doubt for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester, whilst Nigel Pearson considers ringing the changes against the champions-elect.

Sturridge return doubtful this campaign

Daniel Sturridge’s season has been hit hard by a bevy of injuries – the latest of which could keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. Speaking on the English striker’s ongoing travails in yesterday’s press conference, Brendan Rodgers insisted that the club would strive to get him back to full fitness but wouldn’t compromise his long-term health.

“When he’s been fit he’s been brilliant for the team, the key now is to see if we can get him back fit and consistently playing. We’ll see if that’s going to be this season or the pre-season. We’ll do what’s in the best interests of him; we have to protect Daniel and make sure he’s going to be here over the next number of years, playing and playing to the level that we all know he can.”

The Scout Says: In the absence of even a tentative return date, it looks increasingly likely that Sturridge will play no further part this campaign. Raheem Sterling had been the player touted to assume the goal scoring mantle in his stead, yet that didn’t transpire on the weekend, with the fleet-footed winger failing to fashion a single shot against West Brom at the weekend – as compared to Philippe Coutinho’s nine efforts on goal. Those who handed Sterling the captaincy over Eden Hazard will hope that Hull’s defence is more obliging than the Baggies’ rejuvenated rearguard. There’s promise in that respect, given that Steve Bruce’s men conceded the fourth-highest number of big chances (eight) in the last four Gameweeks, shipping eight goals in the process.

Mourinho eschews heavy rotation for Foxes tie

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho does not intend to name many alterations to his starting line-up when the Blues roll up to the King Power Stadium tomorrow night for their second match in four days.

“I don’t plan to make many changes. I know Leicester played on Saturday and we played on Sunday, but we will try to recover the players as best we can. We will leave the young players here to play their cup final against Man City so we don’t take them with us. Our squad is very short with the injuries we have and so there is no space for a lot of rotation.”

Speaking on the fitness of some of his key stars, the Portuguese boss admitted he’s unlikely to take a gamble on playing Diego Costa – in light of his propensity for injury setbacks – while Oscar was discharged from the hospital and slept at home following a serious collision with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina on the weekend.

“I don’t know about Diego Costa. I have to think about if it deserves a gamble or if we wait a few more days to be completely sure. If it was a player without an injury history I would play him tomorrow, but because he is a player with a history I have to think about that. I really don’t know how Oscar is but the most important thing is that he is not in hospital. He went immediately to his house yesterday, slept at home, and he should be arriving [today].”

The Scout Says: Considering that Costa sustained a fresh hamstring injury the last time Mourinho took a calculated risk starting him, next weekend’s home clash with Palace now appears to be a more realistic return date. As the Blues manager showed against Arsenal, though, he has no qualms over utilising a false nine system to deal with his lack of strikers, with Loic Remy also missing out this evening. Indeed, there’s a possibility that if Chelsea clinch the title by the weekend, Mourinho could use Costa sparingly for the remaining matches in order to rest his dodgy hamstrings – a real concern for the forward’s 28% ownership.

Diame could return for Liverpool clash

Hull City manager Steve Bruce could welcome back Mo Diame and Andrew Robertson to his squad for their home tie against Liverpool on Tuesday, with no new injury complaints to report.

The Scout Says: Although Diame, at best, will only be afforded brief minutes in a potential return from injury against the Reds, his reinstatement would be good news for the Tigers’ chances of survival beyond this double Gameweek. The Senegalese midfielder’s eye for goal – as demonstrated by his four in five starts at the start of the season – would augment the assist potential of the likes of Ahmed Elmohamady and Dame N’Doye, who were both subject to investment spikes last week. Owners of the duo now watch on as they attempt to unlock a Liverpool back line that’s recorded clean sheets in four of their last six. On the flipside, the Merseysiders’ relative impotency at The Hawthorns offers hope for owners of Hull’s defenders that a shut-out is on the cards at the KC this evening.

Pearson may shuffle squad for Blues visit

Nigel Pearson hasn’t ruled out enacting a few changes to Leicester’s starting XI for their match-up against Chelsea. David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp are still touch-and-go for the Blues clash, while Jamie Vardy needed an injection in his foot before the Burnley fixture. With the Foxes facing Newcastle United in Saturday’s early kick off, Pearson is wary of further injuries given the quick turnaround of matches:

“My focus is Leicester City, we will always do what is best for us. If we need to freshen it up, we will. We’ve picked up some injuries in games. The likes of Nugent and Schlupp will have to be assessed to see whether they are going to be available for this one (Chelsea) or the weekend… Vardy had an injection in his foot just before the [Burnley] game. We will assess it. It’s not too bad getting players prepared for this game, but of course then it becomes the situation of we have a game played earlier on a Saturday having played on a Wednesday, but that’s how it is. Of course we have to keep an eye on [the Newcastle game]. It would be remiss of us not to do that because we work heavily in conjunction with the medical and sports science aspects of the Football Club. The considerations are about our players and the turnaround of games. I’m not too concerned about other people’s thoughts.”

The Scout Says: Pearson’s soundbites don’t dispel the notion that he could rest a selection of key players ahead of the more winnable Newcastle visit on Saturday. Although the Foxes will fancy their chances against any outfit at home in light of their ongoing four-match winning streak, owners of Wes Morgan, Robert Huth and Esteban Cambiasso will pray that the head coach doesn’t spring a surprise and make a raft of changes. The fitness of Schlupp and Nugent remains a concern looking beyond the double. Leicester close out the season with an agreeable run-in that includes three home clashes (NEW, SOU, QPR) and a trip to Sunderland – validating the tactic to heavily back Pearson’s side in the first place. The Magpies encounter is certainly one that Schlupp’s ownership would be loath to miss out on, given that the Tynesiders have notched a pitiful five goals in nine Gameweeks.

Advocaat considers omitting Johnson for Black Cats run-in

Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is considering keeping Adam Johnson out of the matchday squad until the end of the season in response to his off-field issues, citing the winger’s current mental state as a primary concern.

The Scout Says: Save for the ongoing investigations surrounding Adam Johnson, the Black Cats winger would’ve been a prime candidate for their double Gameweek 37 (LEI, ars) had he played himself back into form with a run of starts. In his absence, Fantasy managers may well turn their attention towards Jack Rodwell (two goals in seven) and Sebastian Larsson (three goals, four assists this season) in their search for midfield differentials. Connor Wickham (two in two) reaffirmed his position as a strong selection with his goal against Stoke City on the weekend, while Jermain Defoe (three in nine) will be on a few radars across the next two rounds of fixtures.

Does anyone think Walcott will start any of the remaining games this season? If so, which GW?

As a Gooner I can't believe he hasn't got more game time of late. If he doesn't start another league game it bodes badly for his future.
I'd start him every time ahead of Ramsey but I'm not Wenger - he'll possibly start Swansea (h) and Sunderland (h) with Ramsey preferred for Man U

Ramsey better than Theo? According to FPL points , then yes. Think a lot of Gooner fans have short memories about Theo - will be a massive loss. Have a look at the laboured slow attacks against Chelsea (and a lot of other teams throughout the season) - Theo offers and always offered something different. I'll be gutted if he's phased out of the club this summer.

A few weeks. Slightly worse. He is much better centrally bombarding forward into spaces created by those ahead of him. He is becoming a better winger though and still a very viable option,

I'm an Arsenal fan and still can't decide. My advice is to wait until gw 37 so we have more to work with in terms of form, positioning etc. It's a real 50/50 call at this stage.

For what it's worth .... Theo right wing, Sanchez left - Coq and Ramsey/Jack in the middle. Ozil behind striker, then Giroud or Welbz would be a serious team.

See suggestion for creating a “perfect” DGW 37 below:

    Defense:
Chelsea Liverpool are strong defensively and have a nice GW37, that leaves one open spot in the defense and with PVA playing like a winger he gets this last spot.

    Terry Skrtel PVA

    Midfield:
Hazard is obvious. With no room in defense for Arsenal, we can get two in midfield.
Most of us have two Liverpool attacker now. We can keep one of them for GW37.

    Hazard Sanchez Ramsey Coutinho

    Forwards:
    Aguero (swa) Kane (HUL)
Both fighting for the golden boots.

This leaves two open slots, one keeper and one forward.
Lets make this DGW-players-> Panti, Giroud

So long story short you will get the following DGW37 team:
    Pantilimon
    Terry Skrtel PVA
    Hazard Sanchez Ramsey Coutinho
    Aguero Kane Giroud

What do you think of this team?

I'm thinking Ozil over Ramsey. Also, I'd rather not double up on Sunderland so I'd go for Ospina. Then get Silva over Ramsey to free up that Arsenal spot.

Ozil could be good. But you cant replace Ramsey with both Silva and Ozil.
I take it you will replace you Liverpool midfielder with one of them, leaving your solution a brilliant option if you have the luxury of having closer to 110 to spend.

Have those Defenders and Strikers right now..

Have Hazard too and aiming to get in, Sanchez, Ramsey for Fabs/Sterling
      with Hendo in there too.

Courtois (Hopefully he Mou doesn't play Cech all of the sudden)
Cahill-Moreno-Schlupp (Pva, Hutton) Not planning any changes here unless Moreno and Schlupp injuries are worse than expected.
      Hazard-Sanchez-Henderson-Silva (Boyd) I might do Silva-->Cazorla and Moreno---->Skrtel
      Benteke-Kane-Aguero

If I were chasing, then yer, I'd definitely by weighing up Benteke - I just can't convince myself he's gonna return more than Giroud or Pellè between now and seasons' end.

I would say that i can't see Pelle returning anywhere near Benteke/Giroud between now and seasons end.

Benteke is a much much stronger option than Pelle. If Giroud didn't have the DGW then i'd say he is even ahead of Giroud.

I am personally getting Benteke over giroud and finding my 3 arsenal elsewhere.

I reckon I would if I were chasing - one of my biggest mistakes this season is not having the conviction to go with a player clearly on a scoring run and then getting them in (usually) the week they start blanking.

Just not convinced Bentekkers is gonna rack 'em up?

Fair enough. He's in great form at the moment with great fixtures too, on pens and firing under his new manager. Looking promising imo. I'm getting him this week for Remy then getting Giroud for Kane in 37

            Those are some good points.

Currently have Remy, Aguero, Vardy: am thinking

            Remy --> big hitter

            Aguero keep barring injury etc.

            Vardy to Austin/Kane/Wickham

S'all v undecided - may have to revisit Benteke.

Which do you prefer for this week? (1FT & 4.7m)

    A. Silva>Ramsey/Ozil
    B. Silva>Sanchez (will need 2FTs to get Vardy>Giroud)
    C. Vardy>Giroud (like Vardy's fixture this week assuming he is fit)

    Krul
    Fonte, Wolls, Skirtel
    Haz, Henderson, Stirling, Silva
    Aguerro, Kane, Vardy

    Pants, JWP, PVA, Dawson

    Kasper
    Ivan // Skrtel // Wolls
    Haz // Silva // Cout // Sterling
    Kane // Kun // Nugent

    Panti -- Phillips - Dawson -- Naughton

Could possibly save and then Nugent and Cout/Sterling > Giroud and Ramsey. Obviously if Nugent a doubt hand will be forced but if fit bad idea with (NEW)?

I haven't seen City playing since United game. What's going on with Silva? Is he rather unlucky, or just in the bad spot? Should I expect returns from him in next couple of games?
I'm tempted to keep him until QPR game as he's sort of differential, yet I wouldn't mind swapping him for Sanchez - especially as my ML rival won't be able to do that and Sanchez outscoring Silva would really help me.
So, what's the deal with the little magician?

Most teams have got City licked and know they can stifle them by parking the bus, leaving Silva to dick about halfway into the opposition half relying on the other City mids and fullbacks make the runs in to something into the box, by which point silva is well away from the action.

I got rid of him on WC in view of a future move to Sanchez along the line. Actually, playing under Pellegrini has kind of ruined his assist making, tends to assist the assister. Kinda agree with Wilkinson, and don't be fooled by City's goals, they were really fluky

Suppose it can go either way Neville's Advocate as to who is the best pick for the double.....as many have said going without the explosive potential of Alexis for the double seems a risk. But hey an Arsenal Def could easily out score one of their premium Mids in the double. And yeah planning x3 Gooners attackers as i think the potential upside favours the attacking 3. Could go either way lets be honest.

I guess the big question for the last ARS slot is Ramsey vs Ozil.

Think I'll have to go for Ozil, he looked good versus Chelsea.

I've just been made aware that Ramsey is playing right wing. Is this bad for his points potential?
Should I hold off on getting Ramsey and go for Ozil instead? Or is Sanchez worth a re-shuffle?

It's not his favoured position but he still impresses.

      Sanchez > Ramsey > ozil

However obtaining Sanchez for hits and shuffling out other good players may mean Ramsey is a suitable substitute

Can someone please talk me through this Ramsey over Ozil view, that many on here seem to have?

Sanchez clearly offers the greater goal threat, with Ozil and Ramsey not dissimilar from what I can see.

But then Ozil smashes the other two for assist potential and chances created.

So where's the Ramsey love coming from?

Is it just his recent hauls?

      his nickname I guess

    2. Numb

      - recent hauls
      - established opinion that Ramsey is a good FPL player (from last season)
      - goals more points / baps than assists

I agree that its a toss up between them though

I don't see much Ramsey love. Personally I have been asking questions about him more than anything.
But 2 goals and 3 assists in 5 games is obviously going to draw some attention.

        Thanks all.

Will keep an eye on Arsenal in the next couple of weeks to try and make a logical decision for the double.

Or maybe get both, and ignore the defence!

Any thoughts on this? Better to have 3 goon mid/attack than 2 + Ospina?

    Elliot - Myhill

    JT - Ivano - PVA - Wasi - Vlaar

    Haz - Sanchez - Ramsey - Sterling - Boyd

    Kin - Kane - Giroud

    Ta !

      Hard call.

      I went Ospina/Sanchez/Giroud

But good cased for Koscielny over Ospina or going for three attackers and ignoring defense.

Only must-have is Sanchez for the DGW in my opinion. Other two can be any two of
Ospina, defender, Ozil, Ramsey, or Giroud... and possibly one punt in the mix on either Welbeck or Walcott.

Ooops, Cazorla should be in the mix too of course.

Is Sanchez really a must have?

Two hauls in nine games - I sold him because his bang wasn't big enough for his buck.

That seems to be the view here, not sure I agree 100% but he seems the man most likely to get the points
