Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Sunday

The world expects the 2014/15 Premier League champions to be crowned this afternoon, as Chelsea host Crystal Palace at lunchtime, requiring a win to seal the title. Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur locks horns with Manchester City in the tea-time kick off as firm underdogs, given that the Sky Blues emerged victorious in seven of their previous eight meetings.

For Fantasy managers, the day is all about the clash of the captaincy candidates, as Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero go head-to-head: the outcome could well have a significant impact on the Gameweek.

Having drawn successive blanks in the Blues’ double, Hazard will look to end the campaign on a high note when the Eagles pay a visit to Stamford Bridge – the Belgian has scored in his last two home outings. Cesc Fabregas fared slightly better in Gameweek 34, notching his 18th assist of the campaign, while Chelsea’s high-ownership defenders will be favoured to deliver a fourth clean sheet in five.

Spurs will not be relishing the clash with Manuel Pellegrini’s men, considering the North London club have shipped 15 goals in their previous three meetings. A fit and firing Aguero (four goals in three) tops the list of Mauricio Pochettino’s concerns, particularly when the Argentine frontman bagging seven of those 15 goals. Nacer Chadli (two goals in as many matches) is the hosts’ form player, with Harry Kane registering a solitary goal in his last four starts. Kane’s owners will be hoping that his quest for the Golden Boot will inspire an upturn in fortunes today.

Honestly no chance we will. We've been unlucky with our results that we've missed our chances big time, but vs Palace, Arsenal and Hull I'm more than confident of 6 points. Problem is what to do with Rooney.

Haha. RvP up front yesterday was 10x sharper than Rooney has been up front. Rooney isn't a midfielder and slows down play.

        I didn't.

I don't think we'll win it next season - but when we buy the players Van Gaal will have identified for his system (not just superstar names like Di Maria and Falcao), we'll at least challenge I'd imagine.

I'm not sure. I want to believe it but LVG has to make the best of some of those players. I had never really rated ADM until he played LCM for Real. I was so excited when he signed precisely for this reason, yet LVG has persisted in turfing Rooney back into the CM (instead of playing him up top) and putting ADM on the wing.

So I do think he has to cop on on that front, Di Maria is a fantastic player and I completely believe he can play in this league, but LVG has got to use him better. Aside from defenders, that squad is good enough to put in better performances than they currently are. And part of that is due to how the system is being set up.

            1. @ocprodigy

Problem with ADM is if you play him in the middle and he loses the ball, you're instantly back up against the wall defending. Great player but he needs to be able to retain the ball at least.

                • 14 Years
                9 years, 2 days ago

I agree on that front but I think (and I genuinely don't have the stats) that you'd find he is better on the ball in the CM spot as well. I absolutely understand why shifting him to the wing avoids that problem, but I actually think his losing the ball would be much less in that position. Just my thought though, no evidence on it.

That won't happen. But they have been very disappointing as well.

Seemed like they were getting it right, Carrick out exposes how much is still wrong imo. I didn't expect anything against Chelsea, the Everton match was embarrassing, and yesterday they were dealing with a parked bus but they really have to make something of it. Credit to West Brom, but United really should have scored.

RVP's penalty and McNair's miss, plus his mistake... Injuries are beginning to create holes again. I think people forget Shaw, Carrick, Jones and Rojo have been out and we've suddenly started leaking like mad. It's difficult.

        1. Somalion
          • 14 Years
          9 years, 2 days ago

Yes indeedy, they were all poor moments.

And I agree on injuries but once again (I actually do like LVG btw, just pointing out some stuff that annoys me 🙂 ) the injuries are more frequent due to what I believe could be the training system. Certainly it seems that way (barring maybe Jones, as he is a liability to himself). RVP starting was another peculiar one imo.

And I mean that because he has just returned from a lay off having played only for the reserves or whoever he played for. Not that I doubt him as a player.

Better than I'd seen him in a while, I am with you there.

I really think Rooney needs to be up top with RVP and they have to change the CM (in situations like this where Carrick is out.
