Team of the Season – Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero reaffirmed his status as the league’s most lethal forward this season, racking up 26 goals as City finished second behind champions Chelsea. The Golden Boot winner justified his weighty 12.0 price tag, delivering attacking returns in 22 of his 33 appearances, and serving up a personal best of 216 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

The Statistics

As has been the unfortunate reality throughout his City career, Aguero was Fantasy gold when fit and firing yet inevitably succumbed to injury at some stage. Despite clocking significantly more pitch time than in the previous two campaigns, the Argentina international still only graced the pitch for 2532 minutes – put that into perspective, Eden Hazard managed 3373 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign. Nonetheless, Aguero still finished second overall behind the Belgian’s 233 points and ended the season as City’s top scoring Fantasy assets, some 25 points ahead of David Silva.

Handed a sub role for the first two Gameweeks due to World Cup duties for Argentina, Aguero emerged from the bench to net in cameos against Newcastle United and Liverpool. The South American preserved that momentum right through to Gameweek 14, tallying 14 goals and three assists over that period, with his price ballooning up to 12.9 as a result. The biggest wave of new owners (370,000) arrived after his four-goal spree against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 8.

Aguero was then beset with injury for six Gameweeks, encouraging over one million owners to cash in on the Sky Blues striker. His ten starts following a full return in Gameweek 22 marked a downturn in productivity, harvesting just three goals and four assists as he struggled to recapture his lethal early-season displays.

From Gameweek 32 onwards, however, Aguero ran riot after Manuel Pellegrini moved from a 4-4-2 back to a lone striker system. Leading the line on his own, the Argentine turned in a breathless display of finishing prowess, notching nine goals and three assists – rendering him a must-have for City’s run-in.

This late flurry cemented his position at the summit of the scoring charts, having bagged five more goals (26) than his immediate challenger, Harry Kane (21). Aguero underlined his capacity for huge returns with three 15+ points hauls, netting two or more goals on six occasions. The former Atletico Madrid marksman supplemented this goal output with ten assists, becoming one of only three players (alongside Hazard and Silva) to post double figures in both the goals and assists columns.

Aguero’s scoring rate was unrivalled: no forward in the league could better his minutes per goal average (101.6), which in turn afforded him the best points per game average (6.5), ahead of Hazard (6.1). The Belgian livewire (42) did boast a superior tally of bonus points though, with Aguero (27) ranking fifth overall in that regard, just behind team-mate Silva (28).

The Prospects

As discussed in Monday’s article on Alexis Sanchez, the upcoming Copa America may have a part to play in our early-season plans. Pellegrini has insisted he will hand Aguero, Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta a 30-day break over the summer and bearing in mind that the Copa America final is on July 4, it may well be that, if Argentina progress to the latter stages, we could see a similar scenario to the 2014/15 campaign, when, as mentioned above, he was introduced off the bench in City’s first couple of matches.

As the chief goal threat for the league’s highest-scoring team in each of the past four years, a fully-fit Aguero will doubtless be the first name on most Fantasy managers’ squad list. To an extent, though, much may depend on how Pellegrini chooses to line up next term. There’s no question that Aguero functions better as a Fantasy asset on his own up top, though his manager’s penchant for a two-man frontline remains a concern.

The winter signing of Wilfried Bony could yet prove a spanner in the works, then. The Ivorian’s move from Swansea brought a proven Premier League scorer to the Etihad, yet he was handed just two starts by Pellegrini in 2015 after being snapped up for £28m on the back of his successful displays for the Welsh outfit.

Speaking on the former Swans striker recently, Pellegrini admitted that he was reluctant to start Bony in the midst of the Sky Blues’ winning streak but insisted he’ll be a key player next term:

“He was very unlucky maybe this year when we bought him because he started by going to the Africa Cup of Nations and he came back with a lot of games in his body. After that he had an important injury in his ankle and his knee in the same leg, so he stopped for about three or four weeks. After that we won five games in a row and I didn’t want to make changes during this moment. But it’s very important for him to play the minutes he can, first last week against Queens Park Rangers and now he has participated with a goal at Swansea. I am absolutely sure we bought the player that we need and that he will be important in our future.”

Time will tell whether Aguero and Bony can forge a mutually beneficial relationship, perhaps elevating the latter beyond an impact substitute and into a cheaper, yet profitable, route into City’s forward line. Certainly, if Bony can nail down a regular role ahead of the likes of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, his record at the Liberty suggests he could be one to watch.

Elsewhere in the premium bracket, it remains to be seen whether Diego Costa can afford us a consistency of pitch time to rival Aguero, having missed 12 matches through injury or suspension last time out. Similarly, with Daniel Sturridge set to be sidelined for the first couple of months of the new season and the likes of Robin van Persie struggling for a starting berth at United, it’s difficult to look beyond Aguero as the one must-have striker in our three-man frontlines for the campaign ahead.

Man United star gives big hint to £36.5m transfer move for Nicolas Otamendi. [Daily Star] (Marcos Rojo was quick to favorite the below tweet.)

I said years ago clubs should get Otamendi because he became the world's best defender on FM2011 hahaha.

      ------------------------------Areola
      --Azpilicueta---Otamendi----Chiellini-----Criscito

Oh the glory days of Everton's multiple Champions League winners, built on that defence. Everyone should be in a bidding war over Alphonse Areola (also allows for loads of boob puns).

Then again, that team was spearheaded by 50+ goal a season man Yaya Sanogo...

I also think my belief that Azpilicueta is the league's best defender is 80% because I genuinely believe it based on what I see, but 20% just because he was the greatest £4m signing ever on FM and I kind of feel like I doscovered him.

I love that with FM players, despite the fact that thousands of others will have seen them, they feel like only you are developing them on your own little game. I was genuinely upset when Sanogo came over here and was absolute garbage, I thought he'd be the next Henry based on nothing other than FM.

The first one I played as a 10 year old, being limited to about 10 minutes a day on the PC meant I didn't get addicted though. I remember growing up that fellow Everton fans were devastated when Ibrahim Bakayoko turned out to be cack, after being a complete legend on Champ Man.

I was so convinced by D'Alessandro, I would email LFC every week telling them all about him. I was only about 16 but it was my life ambition at that time. He turned out to be a bit selfish and injury prone and hopped around a few teams.

as you mention below, Goretzka is incredible. I'm 5 seasons in with Man Utd, bulked out the squad with the likes of John Stones and Emre Can and a few Real Madrid and Barca cast offs. The only exotic signings have been Luca Romero and Gabriel Barbosa - I fully expect them to be tearing it up in League 1 in 10 years time...

The app version is absolute garbage. Probably the greatest disappointment of my life (the first world problems ) after having loved FM on PC. The 90's SM's were way more advanced than these lousy apps where you can't even decide your captain or the way your team plays set pieces. Filled me with an immensely frustrating feeling of indifference.

I'm playing as Preston at the moment on the Kindle version, trying to battle into the League 1 play offs in my 1st season. It's so much harder with lower division sides, I did win the Premiership with Leyton Orient, starting in League One, after about 8 seasons which I was impressed with.

The Leicester game that I mention in the blog above: I retired that after winning the Champions League twice 😎 That recent experience tells me that all clubs should be after Lucas Ocampos, Samuel Umtiti, Leon Goretzka and Kevin Volland. Get them signed Martinez!

Is the kindle version the handheld one the same as on iPhones? That's the one I play. Carlos Mane and Rubén Vezo were tanks for me on my Sporting CP save. I signed Marko Pavlovski in every save last year. Haven't played it as much this year though.

I got Barnet to solid mid-table prem after six, but it would have taken years to win the prem as the infrastructure of the club needed so much work. Well over half the club profit was going straight to training facilities, not even the stadium!

My secret was the coveted 5-2-3 formation, where the 2 is attacking full backs.... 3 CB's 1 Libero and 1 DM, with 3 strikers in the box. It was fantastic, so many goals scored from corners, so many blocked crosses.

I don't think you can select them on a Kindle in the same way, you don't get a choice of large or small database, it's much more limited. I think it's the quality of the scouts, when you go a Prem team they're much better, but I don't know how to change them on the Kindle game.

The Schalke left-back, who joined from Mainz in 2011, will be a free-agent at end of this month after his contract at the Bundesliga outfit expires. Fuchs made 183 Bundesliga matches, scoring ten goals and having 38 assists.

    9.5/10.0
    7.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0 (25.0)
    12.5, 11.0, 7.0, 5.0, 4.5 (40.0)
    12.5, 7.5, 5.0 (25.0) {99.5/100.0}

Has to be something pricking him from his chair....
BBC only muttering darkly about him now 'being under investigation' by the yanks earlier today.

There must be something serious enough to stick on him directly brewing.

Whether it turns the rudder on FIFA is hard to see though. The rot spreads through most roots and branches. Best bet is to plant a new tree - but too people won't want to do that as they won't get their conkers any more.

British journalists are asking him directly about Sterling trying to create a story, what's he going to say, "he's sh*t"? He's just a marginally better Shaun Wright-Phillips, there's no way Madrid will go for him. Who would he replace? Bale? Rodriguez? Isco? Kroos? Ronaldo?!

        Don't think he'd replace anyone.
Whether his agent manages to get him to go there and rot on a bench is another thing.

I agree with you though - can't see the point in them getting him....I just find it interesting that it's not the first time Rafa has used the word 'admire' in recent weeks.

We need a keeper, one or two centre backs, a winger, and a creative attacking midfielder. We need quite a bit really. Howard and Jagielka are getting on, Distin has gone, Alcaraz is garbage, Robles is unimpressive. We also need a replacement for Barry, but I think Besic will be quality.

Our key areas need to be a centre back and a creative midfielder.

I don't think Distin has technically retired, but he's left Everton, barely played this season. We need cover at centre back behind Jagielka and Stones and, really, we need someone who can come in for Jagielka, who is not looking the player he was 3 or 4 years ago.

Not heard about anyone being after Coleman, he's had a poor season. I don't think any big clubs will be after our players this summer.

Considering the fact is that humans do not descend from chimpanzees, but both descend from same ancestor, it is more like Liverpool and Everton are different species of apes with the same ancestor. Seen that human and chimpanzee are remarkably distinguished by the greater brain capacity of the former, and having it here established that Liverpool fans find 123-year-old thing "news", which speaks of somewhat slow brain, I would wager that it is the Liverpool side that are the chimpanzees. 😉

As a Liverpool fan I'd be disappointed if other fans didn't rip it out of us, it would show we had become irrelevant. I would expect nothing less from them and likewise the should expect the same.

Exactly, if Gascoigne had done the same back in the day we'd be going on about what a great character he was. People just like to seek offence where there is none, players take endless abuse from rival fans, why not dish some light-hearted stick back at them? If a Liverpool player sang anti-Everton songs I'd laugh about it, especially if it was on their own trophy parade.

That won't happen though as it would mean Liverpool having to win a trophy 😉

Just to use Arsenal as an example here:

(got this off of SB Nation's Arsenal Blog)

For purposes of the Rule, players can basically be divided into three groups: (1) players under 21, who don’t count against the 25-player roster cap at all; (2) over age 21 players who are Home Grown; and (3) over age 21 players who are not Home Grown. As I understand the rule, here’s how the current Arsenal first-team roster breaks down:

        The Under 21s

        Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (20)

        Calum Chambers (19)

        Yaya Sanogo (21)

        Serge Gnabry (19)

        Gedion Zelalem (17)

        Now, to the over-21 players.

        Home Grown Players

        Wojciech Szczesny

        Kieran Gibbs

        Jack Wilshere

        Theo Walcott

        Aaron Ramsey

        Danny Welbeck

        Francis Coquelin

        Emiliano Martinez**

Man City: More or less, it will change around from time to time. Maybe Bony up front with Aguero in the hole with Nasri dropping to the bench. Sterling and Silva out wide perhaps

Liverpool: Honestly don't see Clyne going to Liverpool, but apart from that yeah. Maybe Sturridge will rotate between up front and RW from time to time

Arsenal: Spot on with rotation for Gibbs, Gabriel.... but Hart in goal? 😛

      Man United: Minefield 😕

Chelsea: I reckon Pogba could go to Chelsea, but I don't see Griezmann moving. Willian/ Cuadrado rotation imo
