DugoutFC

Introducing Dugout FC

Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I know this D is a little light, but I like the rest of it. What do you think?

    Butland - Hennessey
    Cedric - Huth - O'Shea - Francis - Bassong
    Hazard - Mane - Walcott - Sterling - Wanyama
    Kane - Rooney - Sakho

      Hennessey> Speroni
      Cedric> Targett or Yoshida
      Oshea> Williams IMO GL

Thanks for the response. My concern with Targett and Yoshida is them not being nailed on. With only 5.0 and below defenders, I need all of them to have guaranteed starts to allow me to rotate. But I'll consider what you recommended.

There are no clear 4.0 starters. Targett may start the first week or two, but will be back on the bench as soon as Bertrand returns.

The case for holding the All Out Attack chip all the way to Gameweek 38:

Before we get started, what is the All Out Attack chip? Its a boost you can play once in your season to field a 2-5-3 formation.

Firstly, heavy hitting midfielders and forwards are expensive so we're going to need huge team value to make the most of this, so we're already looking at some time after gw30.

Secondly, gw38 is notorious for being impossible to predict defensively and a drubbing or two is almost guaranteed to happen to a team on holiday or already relegated. Think of Norwich losing 6-1 to Fulham(?), Liverpool taking the same scoreline at Stoke, Man U 5-5 WBA, in years gone by with countless 4-0 and 4-1s too. This makes gw38 generally the perfect scenario for the AOA chip anyway.

Finally, the fixtures this year are unbelievably unequal. We have 4 European contenders at home vs 4 relegation candidates who could already be down with one game left to go:

    Arsenal vs Villa
    Chelsea vs Leicester
    Everton vs Norwich
    Man City vs Bournemouth.

You could be lining up with this on the final day to pip your rivals who squander it early:

    GK
    DEF, DEF
Hazard (VC) [LEI], Sanchez [AVL], Walcott [AVL], Silva [BOU], Sterling [BOU]
Costa [LEI], Aguero (C) [BOU], Lukaku [NOR]

Do you really think that comes near to playing it for DGW's?

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Bench Play and Triple Captain are much better for DGWs. Imagine 15 double gameweek players playing or Hazard or Aguero with two home games and triple captaincy points.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Also look how many defenders got double digits in double gameweeks last year. Playing only two of them would be doing yourself a disservice.

Apologies I thought we were talking Bench play. I would tend to think I'd use it if I was behind and there was a kind fixture, around say GW 30> Thx that is interesting.

Yes, but to get such a lineup, you'll have to plan for it weeks in advance.
That, and the final week of the season usually has several strange results.
The games might be meaningless, or only mean something to the relegation candidates.

I can almost guarantee that when I play my all-out-attack chip, the first defender on my bench will get a clean sheet.

GW38 really depends on if the good teams have something to play for. One of your attackers can easily be rested.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

True but I can't find any other weekends so well tipped in the big 8s favour. Maybe gw 25:

        Bournemouth v Arsenal
        Man City v Leicester
        Liverpool v Sunderland
        Tottenham v Watford
        Southampton v West Ham

Your main problem that week is
        Chelsea v Man U

It's a nice idea but reality may be different.

These gimmicky chip things have really devalued the game for me. Silly and pointless as the casual players will still drop out in droves over the Christmas and New Year holidays. The problem is with the schedule in real life - if the Premier League had a winter break people could happily leave their teams for a couple of weeks and pick it up again in January.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

I think they're gimmicky as hell and overcomplicate the game for the casuals, but we all play by the same rules and I'll be here in May regardless so I may as well get to grips with the new rules now in pre-season.

I think you make an interesting point. But personally I think that there is little value to this particular chip.

What happens if you play the chip but one of the attackers does not play? Do you get it back and a defender subbed back in?

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

You don't get it back, but your subs will come on in order if starting XI players don't play.

He can play both left back and left midfield and scored 19 goals in 203 league games in France. That's pretty good in a traditionally low-scoring league. Williams is the bap-magnet but Tabanou might offer something more in attack than Swansea defenders usually do.

Norwich had their moments in the PL a few years ago. Ruddy is a good gk and should make plenty of saves if nothing else. Plus, Norwich will need to play tightly, since their attack looks rather toothless

    Thoughts on my defence?

    Mertesacker/Williams/Cedric/Jenkinson/O'Shea

Gives me these fixtures for the first 10 GWs:

    WHM/new/lei
    NOR/NEW/LEI (EVE,cpl)
    BOU/sun/wat (SWA,LIV)
    new/NOR/avl (M
    STK/wat/NEW
    MUN/bou/EVE
    lei/SWA/NOR
    MUN/WHM/sun
    wat/LEI/STK
    EVE/NEW/avl

Doesn't look too bad. Although you have to consider these are some of the better defences - Arsenal, Southampton, Swansea, and Westham. So it may not be as great a fixture rotation that you may get from a trio of promoted sides or a bunch of defenders with a mix of them, but these are better defences so hopefully more clean sheets.

    Cheers 🙂

I don't really understand why people around here think he isn't. Apart from a slight slip in form last season he always played when fit, is captain and is better than Gabriel imo. One article about Gabriel "being a revelation" doesn't mean he's not nailed imo.

That said, I still think Kosc is worth the extra 0.5 if you want an Arsenal defender.

He did rotate a bit with Gabriel at the end of the season, didn't he? I just have a sneaky feeling that Gabriel will take his spot this season, he is better then Mert in my books. Vermaelen got dropped by Wenger when he was (C), guess we will see what happens.

I wouldn't call it rotation. Just Arsenal weren't playing for anything so they gave other players experience I guess.

Mert had an injury too, did he not?

I think Arsenal will lose a lot by dropping Mertesacker - he's their captain on the pitch and it really shows.

If you want Hazard then go back to what you had it as. If not, leave it!

      The 4.0 is a worry too 😕

      1. Puyol Pants Up
        • 9 Years

Yeah, but I think I need Rooney. He will easily outscore Gomis/Jrod imo. Gomis would of been straight in my team if his fixtures were kinder, only two really easy games (NEW, wat) in Swansea's first 8 or so games.

I'm not too worried about the 4.0, Williams + Huth rotation going along with Azpi + Kosc every week should work wonders. I still believe there will be one 4.0 that will start the season. Moore for a few GWs? Targett? Also, they are all but guaranteed a price rise.

        1. Nickofoz
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Gomis: che, NEW, sun, MUN, wat, EVE, sot, TOT, STK, avl

All good attacking fixtures apart from the first imo. Great value, certainly better than Rooney and allows you to have Hazard.

I would be. It leaves you with four defenders. Three if injuries/suspensions occur which they also do. Arsenal have some decent fixtures but also some pretty brutal ones to start so I wouldn't want to play Kosc EVERY week.

Um, why are they guaranteed a price rise? They'll fall in price if they don't start, and with Targett you'll need 0.2 rise to get anything from him, and since it looks as though he'll play GW1 at most that's pushing it.

If you're happy with a non-playing defender it looks good. I'm not convinced Hazard is worth downgrading one of your strikers/big mids - others feel he's 'essential'. Looks a straightforward set up for adding aguero.

  20. money face bandwagon
    • 10 Years
    8 years, 9 months ago

sorry i do not really understand the logic of not getting wanyama purely due to ownership

if he is the best 4.5m available then we should get him in. yes he might face price drop but throughout the entire season value drops are inevitable and that 0.1 or 0.2 drop should not be viewed that important over the entire season. furthermore, unless on WC it is hard to justify using a FT to change the 5th mid, thus this 5th mid could stick with you up to jan.

On the other hand, some of us are picking the likes of walcott which might end up not playing the entire game when sanchez returns, and this enhance the need of a 4.5m which at least gives u a better chance of getting >2 pts.

    1. Puyol Pants Up
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

He isn't the best 4.5 mid though, and he has high ownership. He will drop. Remember last season? Alot started with Albrighton/Marney/Cattermole. When they used their WC they changed to Boyd. We will eventually transfer our 5th mid out for another 5th mid. We don't want to be losing value.

      1. money face bandwagon
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

albrighton is due to not starting games..thus value drops fast..as for marney i lose 0.1 on him when i sold him in jan.

hmm i agree of the part of losing value..just that i am considering whether it is worth to risk losing the 0.1 or 2 in an attempt to get higher chance of >2 pts.

as for whether wanyama is the best 4.5m i am not so sure about it. if there is a better 4.5m available then no doubt we should all have him.

Sorry - that's agreed with Monkey Face.

I don't see him dropping more .1 (and that will probably reverse when he gets a likely goal).

Should regularly get 3pters, will get the odd assist, probably 2-4 goals over the season and has good opening fixtures.

        1. Nicks93
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

Byt fixtures are irrelevant since you will rarely play him unless there is a suspension/injury crisis. A 4.5 mid shouldnt really contribute to a team, Boyd was an exception so losing 0.1 for a player who doesnt contribute is unacceptable and it should also be considered that midfielders can become the best value players thus a 3-5-2 switch is possible.

            • 13 Years

I'd generally rather play him than a fourth defender, and there's always going to be the odd fixture when you need to play one of your reserves. He's arguably more nailed on than the likes of Fletcher.

              • 10 Years

Im not arguing his nailed-on status its just that i cannot justify losing 0.1 for a player that doesnt contribute. Also what if you wanna triple up on SOU?

Fair enough. What about DDG -> 5.0 and upgrade Saylor to a 4.5?

That's my point, there are no 4.0's. 4.5 is the new 4.0 😉

I must say I like that better mate. Still gives you the 4.0 problem though.
