The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Swansea City

After stepping in as a caretaker manager following the sacking of Michael Laudrup, Garry Monk eventually guided Swansea to a 12th place finish in the 2013/14 season, and was handed the job on a permanent basis ahead of the 2014/15 campaign. The former captain went about rebuilding his squad, with Lukasz Fabianski, Federico Fernandez, Jefferson Montero, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis amongst the notable arrivals. Many of the Spanish contingent at the Liberty departed, though, with Chico Flores, Pablo Hernandez and Michu (on loan) all leaving the club, while Michel Vorm and Ben Davies joined Tottenham.

In this members article, we take a detailed look at Monk’s first full season in charge, analysing the chief goal threats and creators as the Swans recorded a record points total (56) and highest Premier League finish of eighth under the rookie manager.

Ivan GW1 heroics aside, I don't think too much damage can be done.

same could be said for Hazard though

the main reason I have Azpi aside from him possibly being great value is I don't know what I'd do with the spare cash

            That being said

            5.5, Jenks/Francis, Huth/Williams (or other 5.0) looks good

I don't think the same can be said for Hazard because he's a captaincy option and has the potential to cause a 30 point swing between owners and non owners in a single gameweek. The worst that can happen going without a Che def most likely will be missing out on a cleansheet, which you can just as easily get with a different option.

I'm not too happy with my current defence, will probably end up improving it, but I do love the front 8 it gives

                  Shaw/Darmian, Cedric, Jenkinson, Francis, 4.0

                  Haz, Sterling, Walcott, Mane, 4.5

                  Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

atm I have Ritchie over Mane, Williams over Cedric and Huth over a 4.0

Hi folks. I used to post occasionally and lurk a lot under ‘the dark defender’ – dexter grav. Change of grav necessitated change of name. Rambling post to follow…

    Let’s be honest.

We are going to plan meticulously over our teams – find that perfect season-long rotation, have a solid transfer plan for Aguero in week 3, make that all-important value fifth midfielder pick, pick the next Austin from the newly promoted teams…
Then after week one we will be resisting the urge to wildcard as our punts sit on the bench or misfire, Rooney forgets he is a striker and wanders into a deep role, some random (that was in our draft team for one minute at some time) scores and we wail and gnash our teeth and clamour to get him in. Hazard scores a brace and we knew we should have had him over Fabregas (or vice versa), etc, etc, ad nauseum.

So let’s be honest with ourselves.

How about planning to wildcard in week 3 or 4 to get Aguero, jump on some bandwagons, get rid of that donkey (I’m looking at you Pelle), grab that surprise starting 4m defender or the budget striker that is actually going to step up at this level. So plan for the first 3-4 weeks of fixtures accordingly. Get the best team that you can for those weeks and don’t worry about season long rotation of your defence – just focus on the short term and deal with long term rotation when you are wildcarding and better informed.

    Or…

Accept that all of our players are not going to score goals / keep clean sheets in the first week and have some patience. Do not knee-jerk out Payet because he failed to score away against Arsenal, or Benteke because he didn’t get a hattie away to Stoke. You didn’t pick them just for one game did you? If you did, see option A.
So what will I do? Probably spend hours planning, then knee-jerk out Rooney because I hate his face, take a hit to get in Aguero because he got a 5 min sub run on and didn’t pull up lame, or Yaya cos he is on penalties and only 8.5 this season and why didn’t I think of him sooner, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

    Best laid plans and intentions.,.

      Nice reference in the name!

Also, I happen to think GW4 is a great time to WC this season. We'll have a few answers by then and we see a great run of fixtures for City, Liverpool and Stoke ( 😉 ) ... Plus, you mentioned the bargain 4.0 defenders and 4.5 mids.

But I agree, GW1 teams are always a laugh to look back on towards the end of the season.

It goes against my usual strategy, but if I do plan an early wildcard it frees up my thinking quite nicely. Preseason is a fickle form guide and fixtures didn't help Man U at the beginning of the season last year. All in all it's highly unlikely that I will be happy with my team come week 2...

    Schmeichel - Butland

    Naughton - Azpi - Kosc - Huth - S.Taylor

    Milner - Walcott - Fabregas - Sterling - Ritchie

    Deeney - Rooney - Kane

Any thoughts on this draft guys?

Naughton seems like he may gain some attacking potential this season, Ayew is a player who likes to get into the box so will be perfect for Naughton laying in crosses from the opposite side. Bit worried about Man Citys opening fixtures in terms of Sterling points but after GW 4 he should rack them up so keeping him there to set a baseline.
Intending to downgrade Walcott when Sanchez is back to upgrade Rooney for Kun.

    Any thoughts?

Naughton got the assist for Ayew's goal against Forest in the last friendly but Ayew will be playing on the right infront of Naughton with Montero/Routledge on the left

Mitrovic is already expensive. Kane was 5.0,Ramsey was 5.5 the season before. Similarly,Everton had cheap players in defence in 13/14,same for Southampton 14/15.

From a position perspective, perhaps Stoke, but in regards to defensive assets I'd be inclined to say Southampton again.

Kane will continue where he left off in my honest opinion but if you mean a cheap budget striker who explodes then I don't think we'll see another Kane this season.

      Fabianski to Schmeichel? 0.5
      Ivanovic to Azpi? 1
Lukaku down to whereever (awful fixtures so even a promoted player would probably do better at the start) Sakho maybe? 1.5
could always downgrade Depay or Sterling to a 7 million. Having Hazard + 2 9 million mids + 1 8.5 million mid is a bit overkill for a 4 man midfield

Ruddy certainly does have some good fixtures and save points on his side. I think he'll rotate slightly better than Schmichael too, so go with him if you're rotating with Butland :]

Gents and ladies - i am playing draft and need a season keeper striker - budget no real issue but one eye on value - sakho, lukaku, pelle, wilson, deeney and diouf. i'm looking for most points at end of season - little else. thoughts very much appreciate

leaning towards lukaku as last year may have been a blip, he has pens and no europa. sakho and diouf run him close on value?

    RMT

    Cech

    Darmian Azpi Yoshida

    Young Mane Hazard Walcott

    Deeney Rooney Kane

Subs: Schmeichel Barry van Annholt Bennet

Still tweaking this team, do Young nail on for 1st eleven and do I need to cheap on the keeper?

RMT folks, would like to say the tinkering is done but we know it aint true.

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Cedric, Francis, Kos, Huth (Clyne)
    Haz, Ozil, Adam, Tadic (Wanyama)
    Aguero, Rooney (Hooper)

Going with Aguero from the get go!!! I think Adam and Tadic are good punts.

    Let me know. Ta.

    Please RMT

    Courtious, Hennessey.
    Huth, PVA, Lescott, Cedric, Cresswell.
    Ki, Ritchie, Toure, Ozil, Hazard.
    Deeney, Kane, Rooney.

On paper it doesnt look good but this is my reasoning:

Huth and PVA will be my backups. Lescott will get CS with Pulis in charge, Cedric should get CS as Southampton had one of the best defences last year and Cresswell will get the odd goal and assist.

Picking a Sunderland CB is proving tricky. O'Shea captain so you'd expect him to play,Coates looked good in that side towards the end of last year so why would you buy him without planning to play him but then they go out and get Kaboul too.

Looking at the TSB numbers most seem to be on O'Shea but whichever of the other one nails down the second spot is surely a more appealing option.

Start on O'Shea and then make a transfer to whoever nails the second spot or take a punt based on pre-season as to the likely long term partner?

    1. HurriKane
      • 11 Years

Yeah Oshea seems to be the safest choice. PVA the flair pick if you have money to burn

It is indeed tricky. I'm on Kaboul at the moment...that's who the fans on the forums seem to think is the safest pick. But they may not know any more than us.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but this pre-season there has been a heavy focus on training Eric Dier to play CDM. The theory is that in tonights match vs. MLS All-Stars he'll play there alongside Bentaleb.

Couple of things from that. Obviously it'd make him an OOP (who else remembers the sweet finish vs. West Ham on opening day last season?), but more importantly, it'd make Bentaleb more box to box, and I believe a far better fantasy football asset.

I'm a huge fan of Bentaleb's. I think there is a fantasy football player in there, and with the right DM next to him, I can see a mini bandwagon for him at some point this season (considering his price and the team he plays for).

Mason is not to good to be just a squad player.

I'm not saying it'll be the preferred partnership all season, but there is a belief within the management that Dier is a really viable option for that role.

Ha. He's actually our biggest threat at set pieces to. He's often the guy who makes the run to the front post for the flick (and our corners never beat the first man!).

The trouble is, if he doesn't start CDM, he's up against Toby and Verts for a CB place. He'll be a rotation risk all season.
