Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Wednesday

Harry Kane strikes as Spurs are beaten by MLS All Stars. United fall to defeat against PSG, David Nugent and Riyad Mahrez guide Leicester to victory, whilst Newcastle and Sunderland both suffer losses to lower league opposition. Here’s the round-up of the last 24 hours’ action…

York City 2 Newcastle 1

Ayoze Perez netted from an acute angle as Newcastle slumped to their third defeat in five matches. Rolando Aarons further bolstered his chances of securing a starting berth next term, clattering the bar with a header and routinely whipping in threatening crosses. Aleksandar Mitrovic fashioned a wealth of chances on his debut but was unable to convert.

The Magpies lined up in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with a strong youth contingent in attendance. Karl Darlow kept goal behind a back four of Lubomir Satka, Gael Bigirimana, Jamaal Lascelles and Shane Ferguson. Mehdi Abeid and Yoan Gouffran operated in the double pivot, while Aarons, Siem de Jong (number ten) and Ayoze Perez provided the service for lone striker Mitrovic. Steve McClaren made just three second-half changes, with Aarons, Mitrovic and keeper Darlow the men to make way.

After the match, the Magpies boss admitted his new acquisition is still some way short of match sharpness:

“It was good to see Mitrovic playing. He has not trained for a couple of weeks and needs minutes. You could see from his movement and runs he is a good player. He has been training back in Belgium. Yet because of the ongoing saga of his transfer he has missed some days. We only expected one half from him but he wanted more. It shows his enthusisam on the field so we are pleased to get him on. He has only had 24 hours, trained then played. He is a good lad and he had a smile on his face. Once he crosses the white line he is a bit of devil.”

Doncaster Rovers 2 Sunderland 0

Jeremain Lens garnered all the plaudits as the Black Cats were humbled by the League One side. The Dutch forward’s searing pace and inventive wing play filled a niche that was sorely missing in Sunderland’s repertoire last season. Sebastian Coates earned his first minutes since penning a permanent contract at the Stadium of Light, while Younes Kaboul made his debut in the second period.

Dick Advocaat fielded his troops in a 4-2-3-1 formation, naming Costel Pantilimon in goal behind a rearguard of Billy Jones, John O’Shea, Coates and Patrick van Aanholt. Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell manned the engine room, while Jermain Defoe and Lens were stationed out wide, with Adam Johnson tucked in behind lone striker Steven Fletcher. Connor Wickham sustained a knock in training so played no part in this encounter.

Offering up his views after the match, Advocaat heaped praise on Jeremain and Kaboul, before calling on his players to improve against Hannover on Saturday:

“Everybody could see how well Jeremain played tonight. Kaboul also did very well when he came off the bench for the second half. The fitness has to be there but it was a poor result, so hopefully on Saturday we can show how far we are with our progress when we face Hannover.”

Rotherham United 1 Leicester City 2

Riyad Mahrez and David Nugent both netted their second goals of pre-season from the edge of the area, extending Leicester’s unbeaten streak to four matches. The forward pairing provided the supporters with something to cheer about, following an insipid first half in which the Foxes were devoid of creativity.

True to his moniker, Claudio “The Tinkerman” Ranieri opted for a change of formation, deploying his charges in a 4-2-3-1 set-up after sticking to a three-man defence in his first three matches in charge. Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was shielded by a back line of Danny Simpson, Ritchie De Laet, Liam Moore and Jeffrey Schlupp. Ryan Watson and Danny Drinkwater occupied the defensive midfield berths, while Tom Lawrence, Mahrez and Nugent formed the trio behind Leonardo Ulloa. The Leicester boss made wholesale changes from the side that faced Burton Albion just 24 hours earlier, with all but Watson earning the full 90 minutes.

Ranieri is now confident that his side are well prepared to face Sunderland in their season opener, but his intention to employ a variety of formations will set alarm bells ringing for Fantasy managers:

“I feel good. I think the team is ready for the start of the season. I know last season that they played in different systems – we can do the same this season. Now, I will look at tonight’s game and the other training sessions and I will choose a staring XI. I think we are focused on the first match [against Sunderland], then the second match and then throughout the season. We have to fight every match with our character and strength.”

MLS All-Stars 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Harry Kane christened his pre-season debut with a spectacular 25-yard strike and enjoyed a raft of other opportunities at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The North London club dominated proceedings – boasting 62% possession and 14 shots to the hosts’ seven – but fell to defeat due to a five-minute spell of sloppy defending.

Spurs lined up in their favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, with Michel Vorm keeping guard behind a back four of Kyle Walker, Toby Aldeweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies. Nabil Bentaleb was joined by Eric Dier in the double pivot, while Mousa Dembele (right wing), Christian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli (left wing) threaded the balls through to Kane. Hugo Lloris (fractured wrist) and Erik Lamela (fitness) were not included in the squad. Pochettino changed his 11 starters over the course of the second period, with Kieran Trippier, Kevin Wimmer, Dele Alli and Tom Carroll coming on at the break.

Paris Saint-Germain 2 Manchester United 0

The Red Devils rounded off their pre-season tour of USA with a naïve defensive display against the Ligue 1 champions. David De Gea was uncharacteristically careless throughout the encounter, serving up misplaced passes and misjudging a through ball as team-mate Luke Shaw netted an unfortunate opener for the French side. Phil Jones was the chief culprit for PSG’s second, failing to pick up Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who stole in behind the English centre-back and tapped in from two yards out.

United adopted a 4-2-3-1 set-up, fielding a back five of De Gea, Matteo Darmian, Jones, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw. Michael Carrick and fit-again Bastian Schweinsteiger patrolled the centre of the park, with Ashley Young (left wing), Memphis Depay (number ten) and Juan Mata (right) operating behind lone marksman Wayne Rooney in what was the club’s final friendly of the summer.

Speaking on his favoured rearguard for United’s opener against Spurs, Van Gaal revealed he’s already decided in three of his back-four for the Gameweek 1 visit of Spurs:

“I have to start with the formation and when the formation is doing well, I let them pay in that formation. I think I shall play [Luke] Shaw with [Matteo] Darmian, and with Daley Blind. The right central position I have to consider. I am very pleased with the performance of Darmian, and you can see he can play on the right and left. Also, a benefit of this year’s tour is that we don’t have any injuries. Last year I was forced to use, for example, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in the first Premier League match. Now, I have a wider selection and I can use everybody who I think I have to use. There is more competition now and there is more balance in the selection. I have a lot of confidence to start the competition.”

The United boss also conceded that speculation over De Gea’s future is hardly helping, in light of the Spaniard’s error-strewn display:

“I cannot say he (De Gea) did not make a mistake. But everybody can makes mistakes and when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is mostly a goal and that’s the difference. We have a situation that is not favourable for David de Gea, but neither for us and neither for the club [Real Madrid] that maybe he wants to go to.”

I'd be looking to get rooney in first. Kane is good though.

If that's you midfield why do you need another big hitter? Just get a £4.5m, save yourself a benching headache and use the money elsewhere.

Lost at bottom of last page:

Anybody like the look of a front 3 of Kane, Benteke and either Pelle/Lukaku?

I'd cover Man U with Depay or Mata and Costa's injury means I've got Hazard as the main Chelsea attacking threat.

Kane and Benteke (if he plays) are still major captain choices along with Hazard.

Kane a better pick yes because he's fit to play 70 min (for pre season that's good) and he's got a little form.

Van Gaal said Darmian is a starter along but I'd have an Arsenal defender over them.

Nobody knows who's playing CB for Sunderland

Azpi is only Chelsea def I would consider but he offers very little attacking threat. For 6.0 I want odd assist and goals.

Thats why prefer defenders like Merte, Darmian, Shaw for 0.5 less.

I do agree with this in general. Circumstances have conspired to suggest that Shaw is as safe as there is in that back four for the start though. That said, i'd much prefer Darmian right now and don't quite get the appeal of Shaw.

Surely Chelsea's defence is going to be one of the most settled in the league leading to a lot of clean sheets? It's probably not very relevant but in Mourinho's 1st 2nd season at Chelsea they kept 6/6 clean sheets in their first 6 games. Wigan, Arsenal, WBA, Spurs, Sunderland, Charlton.

Hi everyone, I've just joined as a member after dropping in and out of the site last season. I've been playing the game for about 5 years now and never been too into it. Last season I finished inside the top 8000 so this year I'm hoping to try and go a bit better!

I was hoping to share my team and it would be great if people/anyone could let me know what you think - cheers in advance!

    Courtois McCarthy
    Ivanovic Koscielny Huth Collins Mings
    Hazard Henderson Ramsey Sigurdsson Anya
    Rooney Giroud Wilson

    Let me give some explanation:

Goalkeeper: Originally I'd fancied getting tow decent keepers to rotate, e.g. Kasper and Butland. However, I thought the top keepers are ridiculously cheap. I'm expecting more clean sheets from Chelsea than anyone else and for Courtois to play practically all league games with Begovic getting cup runs. I then thought there's no need for me to therefore have a sub keeper any higher than the lowest price as Courtois should play week in/week out.

Defense: Ivanovic was a must for me, well him or JT and with Ivan being the same price I thought he was the best option. Practically plays every week and we all know his goal threat. Koscielny is someone I really rate and Arsenal have some good opening fixtures and don't concede a lot. The other three are all 4.5 and can be rotated for my 3 at the back formation. Collins has decent fixtures GW 2 and 3 and is the captain. Mings is a bit of a gamble as he's new but I expect him to be in the Clyne/Tripper mould contributing offensively (plus they have Villa GW1!). Huth was a revelation at Leicester last season, I had actually wanted Morgan who is the same price although he's currently injured apparently. I feel rotating those three is a decent start.

Midfield: My thought is that Hazard is a must. I won't bore you with what you already know. I wanted two decent midfielders who play every game and have attacking potential: I chose Hendo and Siggy. After GW1 Siggy's fixtures look great. I also think JH will have a strong season this year, he seems to be constantly improving. I got Anya as I needed a bottom of the barrel type player and I thought he'd be more likely for a return than someone like Wanyama. I've seen Anya play for Scotland before and he looks a handful. I also don't think its wise to avoid picking newly promoted players, why such fear people?! Finally - Aaron Ramsey. Same price as Ozil. Most people go Ozil. Could he be an early differential that people are forgetting? He will play AMR in Wenger's 451 formation. Walcott won't start and at this stage its not the wisest decision getting him if he isn't playing week in/week out. Cazorla will play deeper than Rambo and Rambo's linkup with Giroud is out of this world. Which brings me to forwards...

Forwards: I don't have Aguero or Costa. If they are doing unbelievably well then I'll shuffle it about to get one of them. However, the first person I got in this year was Rooney. He's upfront, is on set pieces and wants to show what he can do esp. with Euro's coming up. Giroud has good fixtures and isn't given enough credit IMO. I'd much rather have him than Benteke or Lukaku for example - Arsenal always score goals afterall! I may rethink this however if someone like Cavani signs! Plus, I actually think Kane might struggle this year. I'm not sure he can replciate the season he had (for all I rate him) but that's a discussion for another day. Finally I've gone with Wilson as I needed a cheap option. Ok people like Bojan are the same price but Wilson will play every game as the focal point of Bournemouth's attack and they are a team with a very attacking ethos.

I'm well aware that this is a ridiculously long post but just wanted to generate some decent engagement/debate as I've just signed up and don't usually comment. Thanks again.

Sorry, I know it's Mark Noble isn't it? Was watching an interview with Collins on Sky, got confused I think he recently captained them in a game. Surely he is likely to start ahead of Tomkins though, the new lad isn't up to fitness and Reid's future is unclear? He seems like a solid choice to me...

Collins is a terrible defender, and he'll be 4th choice behind Tomkins, Reid and Ogbonna.

Reid had a slight injury recently, but his future isn't unclear. He's signed a contract extension somewhat recently, and I haven't seen him linked to any clubs.

There's a lot of waffle. Be concise. Articles can have a bit more meat to them as they'll be formatted better, with player names in bold and a direction. (No offense Dembabot!) but this is a lot of text to say very little

It was intended to stand out and therefore generate a bit of debate rather than just listing the team, which often gets lost. One of the moderators posted something recently encouraging this and I wanted to start a discussion by giving detailed analysis of each choice. I wasn't aware you could write in bold from the comments box, I don't post often.

And you are, of course, entitled to that opinion PCY.

Not settled on it at all yet, been playing around with defensive rotations for a little while now. FWIW I would avoid Collins, too much uncertainty there, and with your current set up you're locked in to either playing Wilson or 5 at the back every week as I can't see Anya getting that many games with Watford's new signings.

I'd rebalance some funds, is double Chelsea defence essential? Why not Coutois > Cech, then Kos > to a cheaper option to upgrade elsewhere

And yeah great shout, cheers. If I get Cech I can then downgrade Kosc to someone cheaper but decent and have some funds to play around with.

Yeah seems like it was a good idea int he end to do this post because I'm definitely changing Collins now lol. May go John O'shea...

Villa paying £6M For Rudy Gestede!? Madness!

Do they not know that 1) just because he plays in Championship doesn't mean he fills the home grown quota; 2) they have no problems with home grown quota anyway; 3) they are not relegated to the Championship _yet_.

I guess they see a big guy whose name only differs from Benteke by three letters, and count that he's the perfect replacement. Top scouting, mates!

Guess they've scouted a striker who's entering the prime age, who averages a goal every three games in the championship and is available for a good fee

        1. Camp No No
          • 10 Years

          1) Prime age, ok. Just not at all a prime player.

          2) To be fair to the guy, he averages goal every _two_ matches in Championship for last two seasons, but as I mentioned, Villa is not going to play Championship YET. Although, hiring Sherwood may show intent of doing so soon. So, I give you that, Villa will probably destroy the Championship with Gestede and Agbonlahor upfront.

          3) I precisely pointed out that the fee is ridiculously high. To put it in perspective, about same age forwards who are proven on top level have moved for similar or lesser price: Kruse moved for £8.4M, Erding for £2.3, Jonathas (although with just one good season under him) for £4.2, and Gradel is rumoured to change clubs for a mere £4M. All these are more proven and better than Gestede, Kruse only one more expensive but he is tons better - the only problem with him would have been to convince him to change CL glory to PL relegation battle.

Facepalm. Turn your sarcasm sensors on. Prices are inflated for English players for big clubs. Villa and Gestede do not tick these boxes. So why the inflated price?

Simple: Villa pays for a foreign bench fodder a price with which they could get a proven goalscorer from a foreign league.

Here is my team and I'd appreciate all thoughts....

    Fabianski/Schmeichel

    Ivanovic/Koscielny/Ward/Prodl/Francis

    Hazard/Cazorla/Chadli/Henderson/Wanyama

    Rooney/Wilson/Falcao

    2.0m in the bank.

    Thank you

I think Falcao is a wait and see option. Ballsy certainly.

Not many issues with the rest.

I imagine the 2m is for Aguero, so you could make Ivan > Azpi and upgrade Falcao?

Getting settled on my team line up with the last gripe being my final 2 defenders, which would people prefer? Other 3 are Azpilcueta, Mert and Richards, so I would be looking for one from the following to play each week:

    A - Darmian, Huth

    B - Lescott, Cedric

      A.

Though if WBA can produce some cleansheets as per last year, they look good from GW4 I think.

LVG confirming Utd should be lining up with a 4-3-3 this season. Should put an end to Memphis playing centrally, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Well the quotes from Van Gaal above actually seem to imply that Memphis would be the 3rd midfielder in the 4-3-3 set-up, but I'm guessing since he's best as a winger that Herrera would move into the furthest forward CM spot.

See my comment above - I think Herrera will move into that role. Otherwise we're shoe-horning a winger into midfield.

Although given last season's record of players being OOP, who knows.

It doesn't suggest he'll be on the wing in that 4-3-3 though judging by LVG's comments. So would still be central somehow

I might go for an Ultra-Bore™ team to start with.

    Ruddy (Rudd)
    Ivan, Kosc, Oshea (Francis, Baker)
    Haz, Chadli, Ozil, Hendo
    Benteke, Aguero, Wilson

    Thoughts?

a nice balanced team. My only comment would be there is no Soton. Soton have great fixtures to start. Also Baker at$4m may not start - and could possibly move to Burnley. Perhaps downgrade Kos or Ivan to get Tadic or Mane in the Mid.

    Hi,

Firstly, thanks for all your input last season, which helped loads.

Secondly, I'd appreciate your thoughts on my team.

    Cech (Schwarzer)
    Clyne, Fonte, Azpi (Yoshida, Baker)
    Haz, Henderson, Silva, Ritchie (Aarons)
    Rooney, Kane, Deeney

I'm conscious of the lack of Arsenal players in the frontline, but can't see anyone (other than say Caz) who is nailed on or will get enough minutes to justify a premium mid.

I also don't like having Rooney in the team - just my own viewpoint, as he always does badly when he's in my team and really well when he isn't. [I'll let you all know when I transfer him out!]

    Cheers
