The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Tottenham Hotspur

Despite guiding Tottenham to a sixth place slot in 2013/14 after replacing Andre Villas-Boas as the Tottenham manager, Tim Sherwood wasn’t offered the Spurs job on a permanent basis, with chairman Daniel Levy instead opting for Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine arrived at White Hart Lane having led the Saints to an eighth place finish, and immediately went about adding to his squad, with Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Federico Fazio, Eric Dier and Benjamin Stambouli all joining during the summer transfer window. There were plenty of departures too, with Michael Dawson, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Sandro among the big names to leave.

In this members article, we take an in-depth look at Pochettino’s first season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators as Tottenham recorded a fifth place finish in the Premier League.

Looks like the Gestede transfer to Villa is a goer. How will that work with Adebayor there as well ?

I think he'll be a backup under Sherwood. They play with one striker. Gestede is a great hoof player/impact sub.

Posted this already in the RMT section but there's a few in here so one more can't hurt.

    Cech, Rudd

Darmain, Clyne, Jenkinson, Van Aanholt, Taylor (or other 4 million bench fodder)

    Hazard, Chadli, Sterling, Walcott, Wanyama

    Rooney, Benteke, Defoe

Given that I usually wildcard fairly early I'm comfortable heading into the season with the two Sunderland players. I think Defoe has the potential to be one of the early bandwagons and experience a nice price rise before I wildcard. Part of me is tempted to swap Van Aanholt for a 4.5 and upgrade one of Darmain/Clyne to Azpi but I just feel slightly more comfortable with this version.

Rightly or wrongly Hazard, Sterling, Walcott, Rooney and Benteke are the five players I've come back to time and again and it just comes down to whether I go for this more balanced approach or stick Kane in for Defoe and risk the 'uber' defence of all 4.5s and 1 4m. This version would also see Chadli become a 6.5 or lower (probably Adam Johnson considering my early, and probably misplaced, faith in Sunderland).

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

      Sakho instead of Defoe
I'd drop Darmian. De Gea is likely to leave.
Liverpool's defence still looks sketch IMO. Lovren and Skrtel are awful together.
PvA is too much for 5.0M.
Cech won't get many save points.

Front 7 besides Defoe is amazing though.

I think 5.5 is a risk on Liverpool defence ie Clyne as they always leak goals

Cheers guys. Will rethink the defence as that seems to be the main issue. I think I'll keep Defoe unless I can generate the funds for Pelle or Kane. Thanks for the input.

Bearing in mind that a Pulis team can keep a cleanie against anyone on their day, I'm surprised at the lack of WBA coverage in teams.

Could we see Wayne outgun Kun this season?

Will anyone score more headed goals than Rooney this season?

Playing as an out and out centre forward again and given the service we can expect him to receive, could we see a repeat of the hat-full of headers we saw him score 4 or 5 seasons ago when Antonio Valencia was bombing down that right flank and delivering his crosses to the penalty spot with unerring regularity?

    Thoughts!

With the midfield Wayne has behind him, I can see the race to the golden boot being very close this year. Also, I don't think that Kun will be used as a lone striker all the time, I think Bony will have his share of goals as well.

Thanks Aboildanny. My thinking too. Seems a lot of people are playing on building a team around Aguero, but I think there's value to be had elsewhere. Kun's price means he has to score a lot of FFL points to justify and he's hardly likely to exceed expectations by far, if by some miracle he does. Harry Kane started at 6m last season and finished 25pts. behind Kun.
Given the choice, would you rather have had Kun or Kane + 6 or 7m to spend elsewhere in your squad!?!

I totally agree bro, 13.0 Million is a lot, a lot of cash. Honestly I am still somewhat of a beginner in this fantasy game as this is my second season, but there is no way I can see myself having Aguero for that price tag. It's simply way too much, I mean I understand he is a great captain choice and all, but it's not like he's going to score 50 goals a season. He's no Messi or Ronaldo. Especially if you look at it from this point of view, Wayne last year played most of the campaign as a midfielder and managed 12 goals. He's guaranteed, yes I mean it, guaranteed to score 20+ goals if he is to begin and complete the campaign as a striker with all that quality around him.

In a Fantasy Football -style draft, who would you draft first? What about top 5?

    Thinking:

    1. Hazard

    (6.) Silva

    Which team do you prefer?

    A) FC Stars

    Ruddy-Butland
    Azpilicueta-Francis-O'Shea-Huth-4.0
    Hazard-Walcott (gw2 or 3 SANCHEZ)-CHADLI-RITCHIE-4.5(Surman?)
    Rooney (gw4 Aguero)-PELLE-Sakho

For GW1 I would choose Walcott and Rooney instead of Sanchez and Aguero. For GW2 or GW3 Walcott --> Sanchez and for GW4 Rooney--> Aguero.

    B) FC Boring

    Ruddy-Butland
    Azpilicueta-Francis-O'Shea-Huth-PRÖDL (or other 4.5)
    Hazard-Walcott-DEPAY (or Mata)-MANE-4.5(Surman?)
    Rooney-BENTEKE-Sakho

I would find the way to get Aguero in for GW4. Maybe Walcott & Rooney --> 6.5 and Aguero.

So, the big difference between those teams are whether it's worth to have Sanchez I guess. Any comments appreciated!
