The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pulis’ West Brom

We continue our members articles looking back at last season with a review of West Brom’s displays under Tony Pulis. The Welshman took the helm after Alan Irvine was sacked – with the Baggies lying 16th in the Premier League on December 30 – and ultimately steered them to a 13th-placed finish, a full nine points clear of the drop zone. We’ll compare the attacking numbers from both managers’ spells in charge, and assess the similarities and differences in the statistics.

Irvine was a surprise appointment ahead of the 2014/15 season, having endured difficult spells in charge at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. After managing a mere four wins from Albion’s first 19 matches, the Scot was relieved of his duties, with Pulis taking over on January 1, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Under the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss, the Baggies secured seven victories from 18 matches, including wins against Man United and Chelsea in the final months of the season.

There's an awful lot of very similar RMTs posted on here. Has anybody actually got an interesting differential in their team?

Yeah. Was planning to WC early anyway, so I thought why not use the AOA chip?!

I'll have a 4.5m 5th mid for the rest of the season, so now seems the most effective time to use it...

Just as the ease of travel has eroded cultural differences between countries, so has the ease of communication eroded the differences between fantasy football teams.

Robbie Brady will start the season at left back for Norwich.

I've seen on here suggestions B. Johnson might drop back (he's played there in pre-season) but it looks to be Brady. The other option is 19 year old Harry Toffolo.

Alex Neil on deputies for Martin Olsson: "Robbie can step in there and him and Harry are probably the two left-back options.”

(Olsson returning from a shoulder injury and short of fitness.)

Johnson certainly won't play LB at all (and never would have), anyone who thought that should never be allowed to draw conclusion from a preseason game ever again

You're probably right but wouldnt rule out Toffolo at LB in the opening game completely. Either way i wouldnt be picking any of the those 3 players - had considered Johnson before but is not nailed on anymore

I would recommend watching videos on the players in question and where they excel, and based on the attributes they excel at; you put it against the teams/fixtures coming up.

Quick example: pelle is a good header of the ball and feeds off those crosses, and has a tendency to use his body to good measure to get a shot off. if the teams he will be playing in the upcoming fixtures have a tendency to do poorly against this type of striker. Then it's good backing to pick him.

      Rubbish quotes from Pulis though...

"Rickie is a good, strong, solid player who is a great character, good in the dressing room and good on the pitch," said the Albion head coach.

"We are very pleased to have him on board.

"He's a player of great pedigree and we look forward to integrating him into our squad."

Never mind the rest of the team, allthough I already have another 8.5m mid in the team so flexibility wont change. And of course these options based on Bellerin startin community shield.

    Özil, Bellerin, o'Shea

    Payet, Kosc, PvA

He's also an immobile beast. Not buying another striker will be our undoing this year. I hope lvg learns this quickly and puts memphis in the number 9 and Wayne in the number 10. You need pace in this league. Especially when you're also carrying mata.

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

I'll undoubtedly have Rooney, as those first three fixtures are great. I fully expect to be glad to sell him for Aguero after that though. His record wasn't that good in his prolonged run up front last season, and his assist potential completely disappeared (which is an underrated aspect of premium fantasy forward).

Which option would you go for?

    A. Diafra Sakho + Chadli

    B. Callum Wilson + Mane (double up with Pelle)

I've got Pelle, but I kinda feel like I should have Mane as well, BUT I'm not a big fan of getting in championship strikers into my team in the first GW, which I would have to do with B to get Mane.

    Any advice?

I assume most people will go hazard captain first week. Is this wise though? As long as you have him in your team you're not going to lose major ground and there are some excellent more leftfield choices (theo, lukaku, Ritchie!) that could give you a massive early boost...

Think you're overthinking it a bit. If you feel he'll score the most points, then captain him. Don't let ownership be a factor, especially as it's only the first week. I'll be captaining Walcott, as i think he'll outscore Hazard in the 1st week

How do they influence your squad? And do you pay it more attention than, say, the watchlist or predicted lineups?

          • 11 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

I always refer to predicted line ups for sure but I take a lot of heed of what the scout picks are.after all they are picked by some great fantasy players and the picks are quite often spot on.

How much of an impact will the Community Shield have on ownership?

    Massive, in my opinion.

If Ramsey or Falcao bag a brace, will their ownership absolutely skyrocket?

How much of an influence will it have on the decisions you make when deciding your final team?

    1. Frank Black
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

I'm going to base my decisions on good form, position on the field and minutes played. I'm not going to be a player just because he scored a goal or an assist.

I would love a Falcao brace, dent some of that Costa ownership for us non-owners

Hey guys, RMT my team please 🙂 :

    Schmeichel // Henessy

    Ivanovic // Francis // Targett // O'Shea // Muniesa

    Fabregas // Sterling // Mane // Ozil // Anya

    Kane // Rooney // Wilson

    I've got 2M ITB. Out of 10?

      Actually 2.5 ITB. Sorry

That defence made me wince... Are you saving that 2 million in the bank for anything? If not then use it. I'd upgrade Targett to Kosc then switch O'shea for Prodl so you have 2 big hitting defenders + a rotating 4.5 pair albeit from the promoted sides.

      6/10 purely for the attack

Depends on the rest of the team, and when you'll play them. I like Cedric the least of the three as an option, but he's the only one in my team from the start - fixtures.
