Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Friday

Rickie Lambert scores twice on his debut as West Brom put four past Bristol Rovers. James Chester is deployed at right-back on his first start for the Baggies. Watford fall to a 1-0 defeat in their final summer friendly, whilst goals from Tokelo Rantie and Marc Pugh aren’t enough to stop Bournemouth from losing at home to Cardiff.

Bristol Rovers 0 West Bromwich Albion 4

Having penned a two-year deal with the Baggies just hours prior to kick-off, Rickie Lambert bagged a brace on his debut for the West Midlanders. The first was a fortuitous deflected effort, while the second was a neat finish from a James McClean cross. Craig Gardener and Victor Anichebe rounded off the scoring for the visitors.

Tony Pulis deployed his troops in a 4-4-2 set-up, with Boaz Myhill in goal, James Chester at right-back, fit-again Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson in the heart of defence, and Chris Brunt at left-back. A midfield four comprised of Gardner, Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and McClean supplied the ammunition for strike pairing Saido Berahino and Lambert. Pulis made eight changes over the course of the second period, with the likes of Anichebe, Brown Ideye, Darren Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Callum McManaman earning minutes off the bench.

Pulis talked up Lambert’s influence after the final whistle, insisting that the veteran will have a key part to play, both on and off the pitch in the season to come:

“Rickie’s played at lower level and each time he’s stepped up he’s done well. He did exceptionally well at Southampton and probably feels he deserved more games at Liverpool. But it’s not just on the pitch that he will important, but off the pitch too. He’s a great lad and in Saido we have a wonderful talent, along with other youngsters we have. We hope the way Rickie conducts himself and how he acts will be good for him and our other young players. You cannot have enough role models. He’s been brought up through the lower leagues. When you get the chance to work down there you want to get the chance to claim everything you can – that ambition and drive remains and I hope we see the full benefits of that and I hope the other players do too.”

Bournemouth 2 Cardiff City 3

With a match against Hoffenheim to follow this evening, Eddie Howe fielded a mix of fringe players and first-team options as the Cherries’ relinquished a 1-0 lead at the Vitality Stadium. Tokelo Rantie kicked off the scoring by rounding the Cardiff keeper and slotting into a vacant net, while Marc Pugh fired home a driven finish to offer hope of a comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Charlie Daniels, Andrew Surman, Simon Francis and Sylvain Distin were the other notable inclusions in the starting XI, with the latter reportedly impressing in central defence. Yann Kermorgant was forced off on 35 minutes with a heel problem, Howe confirmed post-match.

Watford 0 Sevilla 1

Quique Sanchez Flores named a strong starting XI for the Hornets’ final pre-season friendly clash against Rojiblancos. Keeper Heurelho Gomes was protected by a back four of Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Ikechi Anya, who took up the left-back berth. Sticking with his favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up, Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami occupied the double pivot, while Miguel Layun, Ighalo and Steven Berghuis supported lone striker Troy Deeney.

Gabriele Angella, Ben Watson, Jose Holebas, Matej Vydra and Juan Carlos Paredes were afforded run-outs in the second 45, but Almen Abdi (knee) and Jose Manuel Jurado (muscular) sat out this encounter with minor knocks.

Taking stock after the defeat, Flores conceded that due to the influx of new players over the last couple of months, he is still no closer to knowing his likely starting XI for next weekend’s opener at Everton:

“I don’t know, we have one week more and it is difficult. We are incorporating players every week which is good news but that makes it difficult because we are then having to explain to the new players what we want from them in the system, the model and the way we want to play…Today we played a deeper defensive line in the first half and it was difficult to stop their players. In the second half we played with high pressure and a different style…We are trying to create a good balance between defence and attack. I wasn’t that happy with the football in the first half because after we won the ball we then rushed and we lost possession and the chance to build the play. I understand the players need to make mistakes in order to advance. So I am not very sad.”

isn't something we didn't already know tbh. that he will be eased in.

He played only 22min at home against Liverpool in GW2 last season, who were coming off a season as title contenders.

Pellegrini knows how to handle Aguero...very cautiously.

I think he'll be rested GW1 and play 60-70 mins against Chelsea before starting regularly from GW3 onwards

Just throwing a spanner in the works but just because Aguero is missing the game against Stuttgart does it really mean he's guaranteed not to start GW1?

He has played a lot of minutes in the Copa America, so it's not like he's lacking match fitness.

He's had a few weeks break and now he's back to training with 9 whole days to go. What is he missing that the rest of the squad haven't got from their routine?

Pellegrini knows that West Brom are very good defensively at home. Relying on Bony alone would be foolish and expecting Sterling to come in and perform the same role as Aguero in his first match is just as foolish.

I guess it's very 50/50 at the moment, I just think it's vital to get 3 points from the start of the season so as not to play catch up to the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea

Bony back available makes it less on an issue. Don't get me wrong Aguero is more important, but they should be able to succeed with Bony up top and their other typical guys.

I don't expect him to start against WBA but think he'll come off the bench.

I can see him playing in GW2 against Chelsea.

He should be fine for the Everton game.

I'm going with him from the start anyways as I can't be dealing with wildcarding early or if he has an unexpected price rise after GW1 or 2.

I understand people not having him to start off with, though, and respect their decision.

I'm not big on Wally due to competition for places when Sanchez returns. Walcott has to perform/get good pitch time in the first 3/4 GWs or he joins the likes of Oxe and Jack minus the possibility of player in strike. Can't see Wenger not mostly trusting Giroud after last season, Wenger has proved his doubters wrong by turning Giroud around and he won't be letting anyone forget this season.

I see it as I don't want him to score but if he does, at least I get something from it

    Hows my first draft guys?

    Courtois, Hennesey
Mertesacker, Mings, Huth, Kaboul, S Taylor
    Hazard, Walcott, Puncheon, Sterling, Sinclair
    Rooney, Costa, Defoe

Kaboul should be nailed on right? thinking o'shea and brown are a bit old and shite now.

@ La Roja sorry pages moving too fast...

with regards to the Azpi/Kosc issue...here's my draft with both of them in.

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Kosc - Azpi - Cedric - O'Shea - Huth
    Hazard - Walcott - Ozil - Chadli - 4.5
    Rooney - Pelle - Sakho

Main concern is lack of captaincy options...but then again should be okay til GW3/4 when I intend to get Aguero anyway.

Pelle started last season well. Around 30+pts in the first GWs.

I think you should get rid of Kane and maybe plan him in for gameweek 2

    Huth-Merte-Coloccini-Francis-Jenko
    Mahrez-Wally-Cesc-Mane-Depay
    Kun-Costa-Ighalo

.Switched it around a bit today...any thoughts....

    Ruddy. Butland.
    Azpi. Williams. Huth. Francis. Prodl.
    Haz. Ozil. Hendo. Ritchie. Wanyamma.
    Kun. Rooney. Deeney.

Prodl to Cathcart, 2 assists in preseason looks watfords best defender.
Don't like Hendo but it's your choice.
Maybe too early for Kun. Maybe money it's for gw2 and downgrade to Pelle?

My team is probably too strong in def & too weak in midfield. Any suggestions?

    Fab / Schmeichel

    Kos / Azpi / Cedric / OShea / Francis

    Haz / Walcott / Ozil / Ritchie / 4.5

    Rooney / Pelle / Sakho

Need to downgrade a midfielder to upgrade my awful attack line but don't know who to downgrade?

    A) Ozil
    B) Depay
    C) Hazard
    D) Sterling

He's my only city coverage and would ideally want to keep some city cover

Ritchie maybe. Don't like this idea of coverage, just because city will score doesn't mean he will. All I'm saying is out of your 4 Mids he would be my least favourite.
