The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – West Ham

Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

Silva for sure. Stering might be amazing but i'll sit on that one. Unsure how SOT midfield will go from the start. If ur 3rd forward is a budget like Wilson or Deeny, am thinking something like Wally, Ramsey, Silva, Fab and Sinclair in midfield.

Targett also is meant to play a maximum of 2 games, before Bertrand returns from injury. So expect a non-playing 4.0 defender.

Seems odd benching Huth over PVA. Huth has the home fixture.

true I'll adjust that. I have no problems targett being benched, I always pick a 4m defender who won't play as my 3rd sub. a bonus that he'll play the second game for me in truth

will keep on eye on keepers, not sold on myhill if things change

        You're right 🙂

I have 0.5 in bank. To be honest I rarely even include goalies in my RMT's I just say 9m rotation as I change my mind so often and people have their opinions. I'll wait until night before on that one, butland, schmecs and ruddy all in my thoughts.

kane is the best place holder there is for aguero in my eyes as rooney is terrible (and I'm a united fan) and costa injured.

Not sure Ramsey will hit the heights of last season when he was bang in form, not sure about Pelle either but Saints regularly surprise me! Don't see too many points from Hendo

I'm tempted by lens over hendo. But I like hendo's play every minute of every match steadyness. A player I don't have to think about being in my team and will likely still get 10-12 assists/goals min. For 7m, I'll take that.

I thought it would be fun to try a build a team post. well, several posts.

Ill start with GKs, move through the positions, and you guys vote on who should go in those spots! then we see how the team looks at the end!

so first off, Goal keepers, choose an option,

    A) Rutland

    B) Courtois/Cech + 4.0

    C) Schmeichel + Speroni

    D) Fabianski/Pantilimon + 4.5/4.0

    E) Something else

What would you choose! vote now and we will be one step closer to the FFS team build!

Chelsea do not have great fixtures until GW12 or so. At 11.5, I do not see Hazard as a fixtureproof bargain as he was at 10.0 last season. I will downgrade Pelle and upgrade a mid in case Hazard is on fire.

        1. Davekitson
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

that sounds a fair contingency, you wouldn't fancy starting with sterling over Ritchie then doing as you've said to get aguero when needed? Though I guess the 3m makes sanchez/aguero acquisition far more flexible

          1. Egg noodle
            • 14 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

The 3 million is precisely for Rooney>Aguero and an underperforming 8.5>Sterling.

I do not like ManCitys opening 3 fixtures either((just like Chelsea), so I'm not too pushed on getting Sterling before that.

    Azpi/Kosc/Kaboul/Huth/4.0

    Hazard/Cesc/Cazorla/Sinclair/4.5

    Sakho/Rooney/Pelle

    3.0 mitb

The 3m is to make getting both sanchez and aguero in much easier

Quite happy with my defence as I can play 4 at the back during most weeks since both lei and sun have great fixtures

My midfield however im not quite as happy, I had walcott but after the game today i decided he is not really worth it so switched to cesc, i picked sinclair over ritchie since im planning to downgrade one of my strikers to wilson down the line and didnt want to double up on BOU

After today I have even more concerns about Walcott's gametime. He was poor all game and Giroud led the line much better when he came on. After this, I can't see Giroud not starting particularly against a West Ham side who are likely to sit a bit deeper making Walcotts pace less useful.

That means it is either Walcott or Ox to start and on the basis of today, it is not even a contest for GW1. I am not saying Ox is a good pick, just that Walcott it looking unlikely to play week 1.

Haz will easily get more points but until Jan, they should be quite similar and you can do an awful lot with 2.5m elsewhere.

What do people reckon about 4.0 mill defender options then? The best punt I can see is S Taylor for Newcastle, he's had a run of games pre-season and if he can stay injury free he's quality. Any others?

There isn't a good option. Find the budget elsewhere, it will be worth it later on.

Just had the question if 4.0 million defenders are worth it and comments state a valid point:
You'll probably won't be using him and if you pick the best of the 4.0 million defenders, he'll have a high ownership as well.
This will increase the chance of him dropping in value so you're advised to take a really, really bad defender.

Same as the hot topic by Giggs Boson earlier, are people not tempted by the 253 chip first week and then a wildcard for week 2? If played well you could easily get a great score in the first week and then for week 2 and onwards you've got the whole of GW1 to assess and find the right bargains etc. For me I feel this tactic could put me into an early lead in my mini leagues and then by building a strong squad after week 1 I can maintain this. Also unless your squad suffers some injuries or suspensions a wildcard before Christmas is often not needed.

Plan on lining up like this for week 1:

    Ruddy

    Ivanovic - Koscielny

    Fabregas - Walcott - Sterling - Depay - Ritchie

    Rooney - Lukaku - Vardy

Don't think there's any risk atall with this tactic, not too much to lose really, but potentially a lot to gain from it.

2-5-3 chip could be well used in GW38.
That is usually when the crazy points are scored. It could work out for you but how many points do you seriously think you can gain from it? Picking a mid over a defender isn't a big difference.

It seems a really tricky chip to use tactically. I guess if you're planning on using the WC so early doors then this could work.

Nah, I think its a good week for cleanies so 3 defenders should suffice. Keep the all out attack for a dgw or last gw of season.

Cesc, Wally, Mane, Depay, Lens, Sinclair, Milner, Sterling i want to fit them all in my team... If i only could switch two forwards slots to midfield ones instead and have Kun as lone striker
