The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – West Ham

Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

my defence is azpi cedric huth ward/mings and saylor

my 5th med is westwood. i can free up 0.5m, so the options im thinking of are:

    1. upgrade cedric to mertz
    2. upgrade saylor to a 4.5m def
    3. keep defence and upgrade westwood to sinclair
    4. same as 3 but switch azpi to an arsenal def
    5. do nothing

    what would u do?

Depends on who your other defenders are. If you have Cedric + Mertesacker + one other decent defender I think would upgrade to sinclair

Looking for another MID with a budget of 9-10 million.

    Got Ozil & Hazard already.

Thinking of doubling up on ARS midfield by stumping for Ramsey.

Anyone else doubling up on Arsenals Midfield?

Considering a Caz and Ramsey/Walcott double up, I just need to be brave if I'm going to risk it with Walcott.

Thought I had my team nailed but with benteke a doubt rethinking.

    Ruddy/ schmicheal
    Azpil/Cedric/ Mertesacker (huth / targett)
    Sterling/ Wally / hazard/ Milner / Sinclair
    Rooney/ benteke (deeney)

Would welcome any thoughts on the team and if I should keep or ditch benteke if so for who? Ings (then switch), pelle?

Keep Benteke, swap Deeney > Defoe, Wally > Ozil/Cazorla, Mert > Kosc

Was half thinking about Defoe, as really not sure in deeney. Carzola looked good today and ozil has been good preseason also but just got a good feeling about Walcott this year. Would rather save the 0.5 with mert as think they are both nailed on centre backs.

Deeney will score goals for Watford but quite how many remains to be seen, Watfords early fixtures are much tougher and Defoe is a proven goal scorer, only concern is possibly be subbed off around 60-70 mins.

Walcott has major explosive potential for sure but right now his minutes are far from guaranteed and at the start of the season it's safer to go with a nailed on.

Fair enough, again bear in mind the new BPS is likely to benefit Kosc, depends if you think the off extra BP here and there is worth 0.5m

Good option IMHO. He was very inconsistent last year, but he has the potential to be one of their most promising players this season. He's had a good pre-season too, my father-in-law has been ranting and raving about him. Mane would be a safer option but it's finding that extra mil.

If you are only going to have one of these three heavy hitters in your team, which would it be and why? Aguero, Hazard, Alexis. I'm thinking that given their prices, I will only spring for one of them and can't decide which one. Here are my thoughts:

Aguero - most explosive, least reliable

Hazard - least explosive, most reliable

Sanchez - moderately explosive, reasonably reliable

Given that he is also the cheapest option on a team that I think will score a lot of goals this year, I'm starting to lean Sanchez.

Hi. So I've got both Henderson and Benteke in my team at the moment, but I definitely don't like to double up on Liverpool. What will be the best replacement for Hendo for 7.0m itb ?
Could make it to 8.0 for Mane, but I am not considering Mane as an option.

Mané is gonna explode this season. Personally don't think the double up would be too bad but could go for Payet at 7.5 or Bolasie/Cabaye at 6.5

    Stekelenburg/Ruddy

    Ivanovic/Koscielny/Mertesacker/Huth/Mings or Francis

    Depay/Ozil/Hazard/Mane/Sinclair

    Costa/Defoe/Jerome

Please RMT. I think Defoe is justifiable on Sunderland's start but I'm not sure about Jerome. Can potentially downgrade defence and somehow squeeze in Benteke. Thoughts please.

Costa might not even start and will get subbed off after 60 mins, SWAP plus Ivan+Hazard should be enough Chelsea cover.
Defoe is a reasonable shout at that price.
You definitely don't want another cheapie up front so would absolutely upgrade Jerome, downgrade Mertesacker > 4.5 that rotates with the other 2, have a look at http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/18/the-13-5-three-way-defensive-rotation/

Question. How manyonhere wont win their ML?
I know pretty much already that I'll win my ML's eventually.
So assuming most on here are in the same boat, why do so many play it so safe?

Walcott, for example, offers huge explosive potential. He also will allow a good downgrade to get Kun in gw4. His opening 3 ties are also very nice. The way I see it, I can get him in and potentially get massive early returns. Or, play safe, get Caz, get a standard safe level of returns from him and win my ML anyway.

My goal every year is to win FPL. Surely to do that, playing it safe isnt how to go about it?

Almost identical to mine, but I'm going Haz-less (Fab) and with a stronger defense (Azp/Kosc/Darmian/Cedric/Huth), and I'm thinking another 4.5 mid, King (Lei) maybe. Not sure he's a certain starter though... So yeah, I like your team! As a Liverpool fan I think Milner is a slightly better choice than Hendo, both are great value though.
