Captain Sensible – Gameweek 2

Our pre-Gameweek members article returns this evening as Fantasy managers look to improve upon last week’s disappointing start to the season. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Wayne Rooney sits atop the summit of our Captain’s Poll for the second week running, with 25% of voters backing the Red Devils frontman to open his account at Villa Park. Manchester United struggled to carve out many clear-cut chances last Saturday, but they’re likely to enjoy a more free-flowing affair against an Aston Villa side that’s recorded just one home clean sheet under Tim Sherwood’s stewardship. The fact that only Queens Park Rangers (30) and Newcastle United (26) conceded more goals than the West Midlands outfit (23) following their managerial change in 2014/15 serves as further encouragement for Rooney owners.

Christian Benteke heads up the chasing pack with a 24% share of the votes. Following a cagey head-to-head against Stoke City last weekend, the Belgian marksman will be relishing the chance to test out the resolve of Bournemouth’s rearguard at Anfield. From Gameweek 26 last term (Sherwood’s first match in charge), no striker tallied more goals than Benteke (11), with five goals arriving in his last four home starts. Two braces and a hat-trick in the final ten rounds of fixtures illustrated his propensity for explosive returns, augmenting his attraction as a captaincy candidate.

A large gap has opened up between the second and third-most popular captaincy picks, with 8% of voters planning to entrust Harry Kane with the armband when Stoke City pay a visit on Saturday. Spurs’ talismanic striker suffered from a lack of service against United but looked sharp on the few occasions he was afforded possession in dangerous areas of the pitch. The Lilywhites will be out to avenge a 2-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture last term but face a resilient Potters outfit that conceded just 23 goals on the road – the same as Chelsea.

Graziano Pelle is pushing Kane for that bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Italy international opened the scoring against Newcastle with a powerful header and appears to have picked up where he left off in the previous campaign, having bagged four goals in his final seven outings. Allied with strikes in both of Saints’ Europa League qualifying matches, Pelle’s form is reminiscent of his start to the 2014/15 season, when he chalked up six goals and one assist in the first eight Gameweeks. A visit from Everton is certainly no pushover, but Pelle has thrived at St Mary’s Stadium up to now, with 11 of his 13 goals coming on home turf.

His partner in crime, Sadio Mane, comes in at 5%, having spurned two great chances to grant Saints the lead in stoppage time at St James’ Park. He, too, will be buoyed by the revelation that Everton conceded the sixth most number of away goals (29) last season.

Perusing the lower reaches of the list, Philippe Coutinho and Dimitri Payet are being tipped by 3% of our readership by virtue of their favourable home match-ups and attacking returns last Gameweek. Meanwhile, dormant big-hitters Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have also been backed by 3% of voters, with early adopters looking to profit from their probable first starts of the new campaign.

Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard have plummeted down the rankings this week, with each laying claim to 2% of the vote. The former was a surprise omission for many in the starting line-up against the Hammers, yet Alan Pardew’s attacking Eagles outfit should encourage Arsene Wenger to start the jet-heeled winger at Selhurst Park. The latter, meanwhile, faces a trip to the Etihad Stadium, which many will expect to be a tight, attritional encounter.

Azpi and Smalling are downgrades on Ivan.

Will be away for two weeks starting in 24h, with very limited access to internet/news.

I have 4.5M ITB to do Kane->Kun (exact amount).

Shall I transfer him in no matter what tomorrow for free when I have the chance ? I feel like one full game or goal from him can result in price rises.

I play 352 with Wilson (bournemouth) first sub, so I can still field 2 forwards if he doesn't show up.

    Rest of team is:
    Pantilimon - 4.0
    Kos Ivan Bassong (Francis Huth)
    Sterling Ramsey Mahrez Ayew Mane
    Kane Pelle (Wilson)

    What do you think ?

My predicament is that I think I should shift Fab out now due to Oscar now holding FK's. However, with Chelsea playing Citeh, will Fab go in then no10 role, Oscar on the bench, with Matic and Ramires in the double pivot?

I guess Oscar will come back and nick all the FK & corners again though...

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 10 Years

Yes, I reckon one of Ramires or Zouma will play next to Matic, pushing Fabregas to a 10.

City are good from set pieces though, and I don't really rate Fabregas as a 10 compared to CM.

if we (utd) win tomorrow then possibly he'll stay in for a while however lvg likes a tinker with players AND formations.
only utd player nailed on is rooney followed I guess by the likes of depay and schneiderlin

    @Wilsh...

    This, surely?

    --------Coq Caz--=------
    Rambo Ozil Sanchez
    --------Giroud-----------

Rambo doesnt deserve to be in the team on merit, I'm not convinced Sanchez will start, and Theo could easily start ahead of Giroud.

      I'd guess at either:

      -----Coq Caz
      Ox Ozil Sanchez
      ------Walcott

      or

      ----Coq Caz
      Ox Ozil Walcott
      -----Giroud

        8 years, 8 months ago

        Oh, so no then! 😛

But does Rambo fit Wenger's template? Does he ever really play two wingers when everyone's fit?

Especially after Zarate's goal, and losing, and being away from home... I'm not sure he'll risk two proper wingers? 😕

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

With how badly Ramsey has been, I just cant see him starting. We have played two wingers before yes. Just picking a random game, we played Ox and Sanchez against Stoke: http://www.11v11.com/matches/arsenal-v-stoke-city-11-january-2015-310679/

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 8 months ago

My theory comes with conditions. #1 is Ozil being fit. No Ozil means two wingers is possible. 😛

For instance, Welbz, Sanchez and the Ox all played together at the start of last season when Ozil was injured.

To be fair though, I haven't really paid much attention to Ramsey. I might just have to keep him, but thanks for the Knowledge, Wilsh!

Yeh, but Rosicky and Ozil aren't too dissimilar.

Tbh, it's pretty pointless trying to predict, because the lineup last week was just so stupid. I mean Cazorla left wing with Tomkins playing right back? Christ...

                8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, everyone can pick the best team in their opinion.

Few can pick Wenger's XI. Too many 50/50s and he loves playing people out of position etc - as you say!

I'd almost rather be certain Rambo/Theo won't start and be forced to get rid. Probably stick. Cheers Wilsh.

i think it'll be sanchez in for ox and another straight shoot out between giroud and walcott, with giroud most likely to start as palace similar enough to west ham, and wenger's pig-headedness

    3. AIRMILES
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

They need players to stay wide, so I agree that Rambo might not start. But I think it might be the Ox who suffers, who'll then come off the bench for Giroud, pushing Walcott up top. However...

Sky Sports aren't as reliable as they once were. There is 0% chance Fonte is sold.

Southampton happy to sell at a decent price. £30m for Stones means an easy £20m to offer for Fonte. Not sure if Fonte would want to go, but might depend on salary.

          Fair play.

What was the -8 in the end?

Interesting to see Ivanovic benched. Most will cry foul, but I can understand that to be honest - expecting Citeh to do the business.

I'm liking Alexis(c), Chadli, Gomis and Sakho. Low ownership, high potential.

I have a ft burning a hole in my pocket.

I'm trying to logically justify (logify) the save transfer move but my money in the bank can get me the Sanchez man for the Cazorla man.

Thing is I'll still need to get him and Aguero next week and I could do it all then for -4 or get Sanchez this gw.
