The ScoutCast – Episode 164 – Sheepish

Limping out of the blocks like three flabby Dads at their kids’ Sports Day, Granville, Jonty and myself are in a sheepish mood for the first ScoutCast of the season.

We do our upmost to rouse some enthusiasm for the events of Gameweek 1, buoyed by tales from you, the community and your latest round of finely honed questions, drilling down into the current big dilemmas.

Chelsea and Arsenal’s stuttering start, the strategy surrounding Aguero and Sanchez, plus the top targets ahead of Friday’s 6.45 deadline provide plenty to distract me from the fact that I’d been robbed of a David Silva goal just minutes before coming on air.

This ScoutCast was recorded on Monday evening and went out live via our YouTube channel. Be sure to subscribe to our channel to get updates on the next cast if you want to drop in live.

You can relieve the Google Hangout version, warts and all, via the larger movie player below. Or, if you’d prefer the low-fat edited audio version, you’ll need this link or the smaller player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

still cant figure who to captain:

    Sanchez, Aguero, Gomis, Pelle

    leaning towards San(C)hez though...

I sold Ox just now for Ayew- didn't want to risk going double fisted Arsenal attack (Have Walcott and held onto him as I think should start and do well)

    Lost on last page

I think I'm gonna do Walcott->4.5 Mid tomorrow as soon as GW2 starts and then play 4-4-2 in GW3, madness?

      Then Aguero in next week?

yeah, ready for the GW4 points bonanza for my 4.5 striker

  4. Francescoli

I know there's not much love for the GW2 wildcard on here, but my team was absolute bollocks and I feel it's much more balanced now. The DZ is a safe place....so go easy on me.

I have 5.5 ITB. I'll go Benteke to Aguero next week and will have a balance of 1.0 to upgrade an underperforming player the following week. For upcoming fixtures, I think it's pretty well balanced.

    Mignolet (McCarthy)
    Alderweireld, Williams, Gomez (Cedric, Oxford)
    Payet, Hazard, Sanchez, Mahrez (Westwood)
    Sakho, Gomis, Benteke

I think it is daft to go without Aguero on a wild card, just bring him in this week

      1. Francescoli
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

i've had him in my team all week. but today i decided to bring tekkers in for the one game. there's some question marks on his fitness (his words not mine) and city are playing chelsea... this tactic allows me to play tekkers (C) and bring aguero in next week with plenty of spare change.

        1. Just A Hat
          • 14 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

I guess so, it's a risk - just hope that nobody gets injured and forces you into another trade! Although you have until GW4 to bring in Aguero

          1. Francescoli
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 8 months ago

yep. i mean i had aguero in all week. his statements to the press have raised a few doubts in my mind and i think tekkers is a much safer option for the one week punt.

aguero definitely my priority transfer next week. and will have 1.0 to upgrade an injured or under performing player the following week.

id be a bit worried having gomez and oxford...could easily lose their places...

      otherwise looks excellent 🙂

      1. Francescoli
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Agree AR. It's a short term money grab and that's why have a spare 1.0 in the bank to upgrade - even after bringing aguero in. If they do hold their places, I'll have 1.0 to upgrade in the mids or forwards (payet -> yaya or gomis -> pelle etc.).

true...that 1.0 safety net is a smart tactic, as no other 4.5 defenders look that appealing atm, go for it 🙂

ok cheers mate, is there any sense in taking some penalty points? its my first year doing fpl and looking back i think ive made quite a few mistakes; my team doesnt look that good in terms of rotation and i have azpi, sterling and hazard all in the starting XI for this weekend. Any ideas, or is it worth sitting tight for now, cheers

        1. Areid13
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

I'd keep because hopefully there will be goals so Sterling and Haz could be decent but nothing brilliant and definitely keep them, I'd bench Azpi. A mistake I made a lot is making 3 transfers costing me 8 points. Don't do that, try and keep it at 2 max but remember when spending points, the player youre buying will have to get at least 4 points more for it to be worth it

          1. Kun.
            • 8 Years
            8 years, 8 months ago

ok sounds good, would you say it'd be worth swapping francis (whos on the bench) with another 4.5m defender and subbing him on for azpi. Know its very early to judge, but Bmouth really didnt look lively against villa, and like you i doubt azpi will pick up many points this GW.

                • 8 Years
                8 years, 8 months ago

                full team is: Mignolet (Schwarzer)
                Azpi, Cresswell, Fonte (Francis, Baker)
                Sterling, Cazorla, Hazard, Henderson (Puncheon)
                Jerome, Pelle, Rooney(c)

tbh im not confident at all that azpi or francis will keep a clean sheet, not even 100% that jerome will start up top. what would you recommend?

                  • 10 Years
                  8 years, 8 months ago

I probably wouldn't do anything to it this week to save a ft but if you're not confident in Jerome you could play puncheon as arsenal looked weak at the back last week

That'd be a surprise. Because Sanchez is so attacking there's a reasonable chance he may play right-sided as he did for long periods last season. He won't want to start too gung ho away from home, particularly against a side with very effective wingers

Anyone else thinking of GW3 WC?

    Reasons:

    1) Avoid wally drop
    2) Kun could run riot against Everton (currently no Citeh coverage)
    3) More data
    4) Price rises should be sharp on certain bandwagons seeing as we will prob have a more normal week where big hitters do well

    1. Francescoli
      • 9 Years

if i'm not mistaken, it's likely that wally will drop tomorrow. if you are going to wildcard next week, i'd get rid of him now to maintain tv.

      1) he'll have already dropped
      2) yes could be a decent City match

      No.
      1. I don't mind walcott drop
      2. I have city coverage ( Silva ). Aguero has admitted he will be eased back in.
      3. First 3 GWs provide very 'Less' data about how the season will shape up.
      4. Price change pattern remains same throughout. Players like mahrez and Kompany are rising, nothing serious.

    Pick one to play:
    Ritchie, Oxford, Prodl

Oxford should be good to start this week (but maybe not much longer with Obiang back in training). Decent chance for a clean sheet against Bournemouth.

You mean Leicester? I can see Leicester scoring.

I think Oxford could get dropped.

I would play Ritchie out of those 3- nailed on and who knows what might happen in that game

          Leicester, yes. It's late.
Oxford will get dropped soon, but should be safe for another match I would think. I'm not convinced Leicester will look nearly as impressive away from home.

I did have Ritchie starting (set pieces plus i thought he was on pens but maybe not anymore?) as I dont trust the pool defence, but oxford could be a decent shout given how they played last week

So I was all set to sell Walcott to avoid the drop, but missed the price changes. I got lucky, but still may sell for gw2.

The rest of the plan (over the next few weeks) depends on whether Rooney looks good against Villa.

    A: Rooney & Walcott -> Aguero & Ayew
B: Benteke, Hazard, Walcott -> Aguero, Sterling & Ayew.

So whether to pull the trigger on Walcott now or tomorrow really depends on whether I believe Ayew will outscore him this week.

Sorry for the long winded explanation... I'm just trying to work it out for myself.

depends on your medium term objectives. are you trying to raise revenue for aguero? if so, i'd go with just one. perhaps A.

If I do Fab ➡ Payet I'll have 2.5m ITB and if I do Giroud ➡ I'll have 3.5m ITB so either way I'll have enough money ITB to get Aguero in GW 3 or 4.

    Mignolet (Schwarzer)
    Azpi, Cresswell, Fonte (Francis, Baker)
    Sterling, Cazorla, Hazard, Henderson (Puncheon)
    Jerome, Pelle, Rooney(c)

Had a good first game week, but looking back I think I've kinda messed my squad up in terms of rotation, and not feeling too confident with having Sterling, Hazard, and Azpi all in the same starting XI. Apparently wild-carding is a bad idea so what would you guys recommend? Cheers.

Not a bad team for gw2. Azpi may just get a cleanie, you know how Mou plays away against the big teams. Everyone else looks decent. Only the Jerome/Puncheon situation looks iffy. I'd probably play Puncheon, to be honest.

I think payet and gomis will outscore ayew and sakho. Gomis looks set to have a heap of chances at goal this year compare to the last with a better supply and payet looks to be the centre of the westham attack being in the hole there and set pieces.

I think bournmouth will struggle to score tbh this game week. Liverpool look alot more stable at the back this season and at home. Dont expect too much from leicester though either. Id go wilson just.. They could always get a lucky goal or a counter.

So far its 1 - 0 to Sakho and a 4.5 that will stay on my bench as my 3rd striker and 5th mid over mahrez and a 5.5 like defoe or deeney as a rotation.. (Note that i already have payet)

Other mids are -mane silva sanchez payet
Other striker are. - aguero gomis

    So A) sakho and a 4.5
    B) 5.5 (who? Currently on defoe) and mahrez

Haha well thats awkward. I think gomis is the safest pick there against newcastle at home. Fancying swansea to cruise past newcastle defence and struggle with Gomis aeriel ability and also with their two wingers in ayew and montero
