Paddy Says – Gameweek 4

It’s time to add the bookmaker odds to our Saturday morning thinking, assessing the current state of play when it comes to clean sheets and the reckoning on anytime goalscorers.

Before that, we bring you news of their specials this weekend that allow new customers to get big odds on four title contenders.

First up, Paddy are allowing new accounts to back heavyweights – Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City – for wins against Palace, West Ham and Watford with odds of 8/1. That market is available until 3pm today with a £10 maximum bet.

If you’re firmly in Man United’s camp ahead of their Sunday trip to Swansea, you can get 7/1 on a win for Louis van Gaal’s men and get £300 in free bets for the rest of the season.

Be sure to check Paddy Power’s terms and conditions on all those bets.

Tipped at 1.44 to score anytime against Watford at the Etihad, the bookies have reinforced the thinking displayed in our Captain Poll. Despite sitting out the majority of the Sky Blues’ Gameweek 1 clash against West Bromwich Albion, the Argentinian marksman ranks top among forwards for shots on target (seven) this term. Given that Man City top the goal charts (eight) at present, Paddy have also offered short odds on reserve striker Kelechi Iheanacho (1.80), Raheem Sterling (2.10) and Yaya Toure (2.20).

Having scored the solitary goal in Liverpool’s previous home tie against Bournemouth, Christian Benteke has been backed at 1.66 to further his tally when West Ham United visit Anfield; behind Aguero, that makes him the most likely starter to get amongst the goals according to Paddy. The Reds frontman placed second among forwards for attempts (four) and shots inside the box (three) last Gameweek, which should serve as encouragement for his hefty 40% ownership.

There are a bevy of Chelsea attackers occupying the top 15 this week ahead of a home encounter against Crystal Palace. Diego Costa – who opened his account last time out against the Baggies – is the bookies favourite to breach the Eagles’ defence at 1.83, but the likes of Radamel Falcao (2.00), Loic Remy (2.00), Pedro (2.10) and Eden Hazard (2.29) are hot on the heels of the Spain international. It’s perhaps significant that Paddy has kept on Pedro’s goalscoring ability, ranking him above Hazard, despite the Belgian boasting spot-kick duties: Pedro is the most fancied midfielder to notch in the Gameweek according to the bookies. Such a view certainly supports the heavy investment that has gone Pedro’s way in the Fantasy Premier League this week.

North London rivals Harry Kane (2.00) and Olivier Giroud (2.20) round off the leaderboard, with the former enjoying a visit from Everton and the latter travelling to Newcastle. Kane is yet to trouble scoreboard this term and will be looking to improve on his two shots on target. As for Giroud, no striker has tallied more attempts (13) or shots inside the box (12) and his record against the Magpies is exemplary: the Frenchman has netted eight goals against Steve McClaren’s side during his Arsenal tenure.

CLEAN SHEET ODDS – GAMEWEEK 4

Manchester City1.90

Aston Villa2.29
Arsenal2.37
Southampton2.60

Although Chelsea have conceded the third most shots inside the box and the most big chances (nine), Paddy are backing the Blues as joint favourites – alongside Liverpool and Manchester City – to record a clean sheet at 1.90. Jose Mourinho’s troops allowed Swansea to fashion five big chances in their last Stamford Bridge showdown, so they’ll need to improve drastically in that regard if they are to shut-out an efferverscent Palace.

Liverpool have registered three shut-outs on the trot but will be wary of a Hammers outfit that’s ranked third for goals scored (six) so far this campaign. Likewise, Man City could make it four consecutive clean sheets with a resilient display against the Hornets, who’ve notched just ten shots on target so far this term.

Stoke have climbed in Paddy’s thinking overnight, now priced at (2.25) they are fancied for a shut-out as they play host to a Baggies team that ranks third-bottom for shots inside the box (16). Aston Villa come next: they limited Manchester United to just five shots inside the box in their last home match and will be confident at keeping out a struggling Sunderland outfit.

Arsenal will lock horns with a Magpies side that’s racked up fewer attempts (20) and shots inside the box (12) than any in the Premier League but Paddy don’t seem that confident that the Gunners can find their defensive form, no doubt influenced by the possible absence of both Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

Southampton are another side looking to find defensive stability but aren’t particularly fancied (2.60) to claim back-to-back shutouts when they face Norwich at St Mary’s. Paddy also doesn’t appear confident on Manchester United (2.62) maintaining their flawless defensive record as they travel to Swansea on Sunday.

Tottenham (2.70) will be encouraged in their quest for a first clean sheet this term by the fact that Everton are positioned in the bottom five for shots inside the box (18). At the foot of the rankings, Bournemouth (3.00) will do well to quell a Leicester City attack that’s chalked up one fewer goal (seven) than Man City (eight).

        Bale has been useless.

Suarez is as old as messi

And Neymar is over-rated and nowhere near the level of Ronaldo and Messi.

James is a good player but again not at CR7, Mes level

    Pedro - Premier League Comparison

    Pedro season 14/15

    - 1524 minutes out of a possible ~3420
    - 6 Goals and 6 Assists
    - Predicted FPL points: 151
    - Points Per 90 Minutes: 8.9
    Other Pp90s:
    Silva: 6.3
    Sanchez: 6.3
    Hazard 6.2
    Fabregas: 5.4
    Mata: 5.3

    Season 13/14

    - 2345 minutes out of a possible ~3420
    - 15 Goals and 10 Assists
    - Predicted FPL Points: 216
    - Points Per 90 Minutes: 8.3
    Other Pp90s:
    Silva: 6.3
    Sanchez: 6.3
    Hazard: 6.2
    Fabregas: 5.4
    Mata: 5.3

His statistics are fantastic and he's a proper goal scoring mid, who looks like he fits right into the Chelsea side based on last week. Predicted FPL points are great, and when you consider the minutes he had they're even more remarkable. A clear winner amongst the likes of Hazard, Silva, Sanchez and Fabregas for Points per 90 minutes - amazing stats from him here, and shows that with the increased number of minutes he will get at Chelsea, he really should flourish.

Now I understand he was at Barcelona before, but Chelsea have their own creators in Fabregas and Hazard, and they are the some of the best in this league. I don't see why they can't provide the same service, or at least provide substantial service that is close to his previous standard. Regardless, even with a drop in quality of service, his output is still incredible, and even if it suffered a drop it would still be top-notch stuff.

Looks a top option to me, and a "cheap" way into the Chelsea attack, who look to be on the rise.

        48 + (38x2) = 124
Then I added the number of CS Barca got, which was like 16 or 22. Can't remember which from which season, and then some bonus points.

        I think it's right.

Yeah, but then you've divided it by the minutes he actually played, so of course the pp90 is absurd, you've basically gifted him like 30 additional appearance points.

If you're going to do a pp90 then you have to base it on an estimate of how many appearance points he would've got, how many CSs he would've got and give a reasonable estimate of bonus (say maybe 10?)

            1. Billy Gilmore
              • 11 Years
              8 years, 8 months ago

He actually got 48 attacking points, 48 app points (13 over 60, 22 under), 11 CSs (out of 13!!) and say 10 bonus gives 117 points @6.8pp90

A far more accurate estimate, although still unreliable due to appearance points for tiny cameos inflating it.

Although, the assumption I'm going with is that he's going to get a lot more minutes at Chelsea.

So if I am trying to predict what he would get at Chelsea based on his output in past clubs...

Aren't those tiny cameos just missed opportunities to get points? Opportunities that he would now get? Now, I'm not even predicting goals he would get based on them, I'm just adding the appearance points he should get.

You're probably right, I'm just not understanding it.

They are, yes, but they won't reflect than in any pp90 analysis. At Chelsea his minutes will be much more (probably about double last season) but this will still likely result in a lower pp90.

I totally get your point and I'm probably bringing him in the week.

                    Okay, now I actually understand.
Raw scores of 151, and 216 are still very very good though. Especially considering minutes. Best to have left it at that to avoid any complications.

Great. 🙂 I've just brought him in as well. Appreciate the advice though, helps for any future analysis.

Ah, now I see. I'm quite clearly not as well-versed in statistics as you are. Cheers for the heads up.

So use the Barca statistics, and not use the assumption that now he would play at least 60 minutes a game?

              Here it is:
              48 + 48 + 10 CS points(only the ones he would've got) + 10 bonus = 116
              Pp90 = 6.9
              Still pretty impressive, imo.

Assuming he replicates this same output for Chelsea, and he is a regular starter, his points output for 1524 minutes would be 151. Any loopholes here?

                • 11 Years
                8 years, 8 months ago

The loophole is that if he's a regular then that 1524 mins will come around by January. In 1524 mins you would expect the ~115 points (I would say in reality around 100 would be more reasonable with fewer CSs and less inflation by cameos). Still that's around 200 points in a season.

Point per start for Pedro at Barca? Tough though, he didn't get that many starts, and he had good ouput in sub appearances. Maybe I'm not getting it?

Pp90 is just basically Points per minute, x 90 to make it into a per game statistic.I suppose it shows how much output a player can produce in a certain period of time. Higher outpur=better quality=more FPL points?

        Cheers 🙂

But a 1 minute cameo gives you 90 pp90. Appearance points are massive in any player's points total and getting the same points in less time can't be extrapolated.

I'm swaying on this one. Why would he not have a bib on if the rest of the first team (other than Benteke who was absent)? Perhaps the manager wants to give him a rest to not overplay such a youngster? I'm wavering between him and Shaw. Really don't want a Gomez 1

Thinking about keeper options in last hour of my wildcard
    Currently have Romero and Schmeichel

Defence otherwise: Gomez + Kolarov + Bellerin + Francis + Darmian
Happy with the rest of the team but only have 0.4 M to play with for future tweaks.

    Wonder if I should
    a) stick - good to have a top class keeper and Utd look tight
    b) downgrade Romero for Butland or similar to pump up the cash reserves?
    c) something else.

Rutland still a viable option in my eyes.

My question mark over Romero is the De Gea saga. If he stays, surely he comes back in sooner rather than later.

City scoring for fun and better fixtures. United can't buy a goal it seems and tougher fixtures.

It's decent but on a wildcard it may be an idea to accommodate Sanchez
