Scout Report – Anthony Martial

Monaco forward Anthony Martial became Manchester United’s biggest signing of the summer transfer window yesterday afternoon after joining in a staggering deal reported to be worth £36 million.

After welcoming the world’s most expensive teenager to Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal hailed the new boy’s versatility before suggesting he will be allowed to settle into life in the Premier League:

“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”

The History

Born in Massy (a suburban commune of Paris), Martial cut his teeth at the local youth academy of CO Les Ulis, before earning a big move to Lyon at the age of 14. During his second campaign with their U17 squad, the burgeoning talent amassed a whopping 31 goals in 21 outings, prompting a call-up to the France U17s. Martial made his senior league bow in February 2013 and went on to notch another two substitute appearances over the course of that campaign.

Identifying the untapped potential within the fleet-footed frontman, Monaco recruited Martial in the summer of 2013 for a €5 million fee. Still just 17 years of age, he tallied 11 appearances (eight starts) in the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, registering two goals and one assist in the process.

Martial initially struggled to cement a regular role for Monaco last term. He featured in the first XI in just two of the first 15 Gameweeks before establishing himself in the second half of the campaign, starting all but six league ties thereafter. Having chalked up an underwhelming haul of one goal and three assists by Gameweek 27, Martial hit a rich vein of form, carding eight goals and one assist in the final 12 rounds of fixtures.

In terms of his involvement beyond Ligue 1, Martial managed two goals in as many starts in the French Cup and a goal scoring cameo in the French League Cup. On the European front, he recorded five starts in the Champions League, claiming an assist during Monaco’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates

Martial was handed his maiden call-up to France’s senior squad for their upcoming international friendlies against Portugal and Serbia. Since 2013, the precocious youngster has been a regular fixture for the France U21s, notching four goals in 12 appearances.

The Prospects

The 19-year-old – who arrives at Old Trafford on a four-year deal with the option for another year – has drawn comparisons with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry due to his pace, movement and eye for goal. Discussing his role for United, Martial admitted his preferred position is through the middle, though is willing to play wherever Van Gaal fields him:

“Since I was young, people have told me I have the right characteristics to play in England. I’m really keen to develop my game in the English league and prove my worth. He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions. It’s the coach who decides but whatever position I’ll do the best I can.”

Given that a criticism much-levelled at Man United this term has been the glacial speed of their build-up play and a lack of thrust on the counter, Van Gaal might be tempted to explore Martial as a wide option. With Memphis Depay looking nailed-on down the left, the Frenchman could switch to the right, thus affording Juan Mata to take up the central role behind Wayne Rooney. Arguably, Mata – who has so far equalled Rooney and Depay’s combined FPL score of 21 points – could prove the main beneficiary in such a scenario.

Alternatively, the Dutch boss might elect to start the ex-Lyon hit man through the middle – either in the support role or as the lone striker, which would see the out-of-form Rooney shift into the number ten role. Certainly, United’s skipper is struggling to fashion clear-cut chances as the spearhead of their attack, having tallied just eight attempts (three on target) in four starts. With Rooney now in the midst of a ten-match barren spell, such a scenario might better play to his strengths at this stage of his career.

Scrutinising Martial’s underlying statistics from the previous campaign, he racked up goals at a greater frequency (one every 200.4 minutes) than Rooney (251.6), Robin van Persie (221) and Radamel Falcao (341.3). Moreover, his shot accuracy (45.1%) was second only to Van Persie (47.4%), while his conversion rate (17.6%) was considerably better than Man United’s most clinical finisher, Rooney (15.2%).

Ultimately, the magnitude of Martial’s Fantasy appeal will largely be dictated by where Van Gaal intends to field him. Priced at 8.0 and classified as a forward, the rangy Frenchman would leap onto many a watchlist if afforded a central striker role, furnishing us with an enticing alternative to the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Graziano Pelle in that bracket. On the other hand, a role on the flank would likely deter prospective investors from tying up one of their three forward slots.

Even for those managers keen to acquire Martial at this early stage, the Red Devils’ upcoming schedule (LIV, sou, SUN, ARS, eve, MCI) makes for grim reading. Considering that United have managed just three goals, 26 attempts inside the box and three big chances this term, it would take a significant leap of faith to back Martial to flourish over that stretch. The fixtures do take a turn for the better around Gameweek 11, though, allowing the new boy a chance to settle before considering investment.

This is a good place to start. I don't think there is a worse option than Willian at his price bracket in the game among those who start, pretty much. You can't do worse 🙂

Southampton already are half way there with the Norwich result!

And as for Liverpool, if Benteke plays he will bully Blind and we should push on after a result at Old Trafford

after Liverpool face UTD I think I'll be looking to even transfer Benteke in for Pelle if he looks good enough to score lots against NOR and AVL.

You know Liverpool loves Norwich… 😉

I'm just hesitant as Pelle has looked really good on the pitch and has struck some kind of form.
I guess after GW5 and internationals more will be clear.

I wildcarded to avoid multiple falls and in the end only one player fell that week... But more have fallen since. In the meantime, I have shaped a better squad and built team value so I don't regret using it, even if the problem I originally feared didn't immediately come to pass.

I feel mine is kind of wasted in the sense I would have loved another 4 weeks for a bigger sample size, see lineups etc, however I had to do it this week as I had no choice. Plummeting team value and injuries (I only fielded 10 men last week).

I'm finding this WC very difficult as I only have a few locked in picks.

Used mine GW 3 and it put me about 20 pts. up in my mini-league. I got rid of some dead wood and gained value with 7 players...which helped me to slowly transfer in a few that were just out of my price range. I'm only up 9pts. now but I feel it was worth it going from 7th to 1st in one game week.

FPL Stats is speculating that Pedro's locked period might have been extended given its proximity to the international break, though it could also be wildcards.

It appears he had an NTI of more than 7,000 in the last 24 hours...

Pretty ridiculous to think his ownership is getting higher by the hour but his price will not be an impediment to future would be buyers.

FPL has screwed up this season with regards to the price changes. Should be transparent.

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

Not transparent on their site, but the mechanics of it.

I think it's about time they realize the game has its own strong community and its foolish to not work together with other entities that are pillars of support. For every game there are fanatics and developers always consider their needs as the game needs them.

What they're doing now is kinda like apple vs the jailbreaking community. Rather than taking them on board and understanding their needs, apple pretends they don't exist, benefit for their talent and claim success as their own.

It's about time price change mechanics are shared with a partner like FPL stats.

More chance getting shared here than there. Won't happen, we have enough advantage already. They may as well list the risers & fallers an hour before they happen in that case.

              • 10 Years
              8 years, 8 months ago

Well even they share simple base mechanics (not the thresholds etc) as stated below, it would be a long way.

These matters are abit more factual than opinions. I know FFS is a stronger partner but last sesson's FPL recommendations on whom to buy and sell on twitter with FFS' logo stamped on it was questionable.

Have the following team, scores 319 over the next 6GWs on the FFS RMT thing, though feel its probably not very accurate at this stage of the season given the crap form of the so called "big hitters"

Have just used my 1FT to get Koralov in for Azpi, but would like to get your esteemed opinions on what moves I should do next... obviously Myhill out, maybe for Butland, and need to replace Clark I think. Haz isnt worth the money at the moment, but surely he'll turn the corner soon?

    Schmeichel // Myhill

    Koralov // Cedric // Clark // Targett // Francis

    Haz // Sanchez // Silva // Albrighton // Fletcher

    Aguero // Wilson // Vardy

Too much money in your 4 big hitters is weakening your team.

I'd save this week but either next week for a hit or the week after for 2fts if look at downgrading hazard and upgrading Albrighton
Eg hazard + Albrighton > pedro + ayew

Green arrow is the weekly goal. Better than last year us the ultimate goal (~8.1k). I kept a screenshot of last year's final game week rankings, so I can compare my current rank to the comparable week from last year. So far, this comparison has not been enjoyable.

Before last year, I was a completely casual player with no awareness of this site. When I stumbled across FFS last year during GW2, it completely changed my approach to (and enjoyment of) FPL. I promptly used my WC, and have been an avid player ever since. My rank history prior to last year is shameful, but it's a useful reminder of how different the game can be for those who are truly engaged.

Who would you replace Mane with at this point in time?

Have 8.1 to spend with Yaya, Ayew, Payet, and Mahrez currently in the middle.

Coutinho... Score beauties and then does nothing for a few games.

Liverpool so unpredictable this season. He's not a bad shout but I want to see a few more games from him.

He's dropped 0.3 on me already and about to hit a bad run of fixtures. Currently on 2 FT's and happy with the rest of my team so 1 FT can be used without waste, although I will also have to move Myhill.

Realize it's money lost, it's more about the points. So many good options in the middle. Personally don't think he'll be a keeper this season.

I sold him myself this week, I understand why you want to move on but other than ayew and Mahrez who you have already and possibly coutinho next week you are operating in a restricted price range. I had the money for pedro so went that way

im not sure if payet is a keeper. if you're set on getting rid of mane id think about downgrading him to someone who leaves enough money in the bank to do payet - sanchez/haz/pedro in the future if they kick on

Fall prediction percentages prior to the drop of those who fell tonight:

    Player
    FFF | FPLS
    Ozil
    -75.2 | -89.5
    Jagielka
    -107.0 | -97.4
    Simpson
    -134.0 | -97.6
    Brunt
    -84.5 | -97.4
    Cabaye
    -95.9 | -96.3
    Armstrong
    -93.7 | -94.4
    Pozo
    N/A | -86.6
    Loftus-Cheek
    N/A | -96.6
    Joselu
    N/A | -98.8

FFF appears not to list every FPL player in the price prediction part. I suspect they have excluded the bottom three here because so few people own them (in the region of 2,000 or less).

Sorry the comment function doesn't allow for great formatting.

Seems FPLS above -85 is a good guide.
      FFF is pretty random.

Unless you have a player with almost non-existent ownership, like Pozo, you *might* be good from about -89% - though we only have the Ozil sample here to suggesting that.

For someone like Pozo just a few extra transfers can make a big difference to the player's fall percentage. I suspect FFF exclude them precisely because they are a lot tougher to call accurately.

Point is, why rely on these sites, some try to hold off to 100+%? Performing players go up. Non performing ones go down, just a matter of time.

Indeed. If they predict someone is into the high 80s either way I wouldn't wait longer to take action at the minute unless you don't mind if they rise or fall.

Top 100k is a lock. I predict a massive reversion to form over the course of the season, which will cause an inevitable fall from grace for all the casuals near the top of the table.

At least this is what I keep telling myself.

    B. Keep and play, due to high ownership of MAN defence?

I've been look at him and have put him on monitor. I don't like the fixtures but I have bigger fish to fry further forward at the minute. If the tougher opponents show United's defensive solidity to be a mirage, as Swansea did, then he will move up the priority list.

5.5+ is quite a bit to have sitting on the bench. It's not too bad at the minute, while the big hitters aren't firing, but that could be a downgrade to free up funds if one or two start clicking into gear.
