Treatment Table – Gameweek 5

League leaders Man City have plenty to fret over this weekend, with Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Raheem Sterling all doubtful for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Juventus. There’s worries in the red half of Manchester, too, after Wayne Rooney missed the 3-1 win over Liverpool with a hamstring complaint. Here’s our regular round-up of all the fresh arrivals onto the treatment table…

Crystal Palace

Damien Delaney is carrying a knock so was replaced by Brede Hangeland in the starting lineup against Manchester City, while Jason Puncheon was withdrawn at the 83-minute mark with a knock following a foul by Eliaquim Mangala.

Everton

Seamus Coleman and Muhamed Besic both sustained suspected hamstring injuries during Everton’s 3-1 win over Chelsea. Post-match, Roberto Martinez went on to say:

“We’ll have to assess Seamus and Mo and see how they are. But the important thing was that everyone who had to be alert and come on to the pitch was fully focused and I think the strength in the squad is starting to show now. Having those numbers helps you be consistent over the course of the season and clearly it showed today.”

Manchester City

Sergio Aguero was forced off at the 25-minute mark during Manchester City’s trip to Crystal Palace, having taken a strong blow to the knee from a crude challenge from Palace’s Scott Dann. Sky Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini implied that the Argentina international will be touch-and-go for their midweek Champions League tie against Juventus:

“It was an important kick on his knee. We’ll see if he can recover between now and Tuesday. It’s very difficult to say now. It’s important to see how he recovers. We’ll see.”

Aguero, meanwhile, took to Twitter last night to play down the seriousness of his withdrawal:

“Thanks everyone for your concern. I got a hard hit and it prevented me from playing more. It doesn’t seem to be a serious injury though.”

Earlier this evening, he gave another update on his condition:

“I had studies done today, to be completed tomorrow. We’ll have a clearer picture then”.

David Silva was ruled out of the Eagles clash by virtue of an ankle complaint, but Pellegrini is optimstic he’ll recover in time to face Juventus on Tuesday:

“Silva is out as I think it would be a risk for him to take another knock on his ankle. I hope he will be OK for Juventus.”

As for Raheem Sterling, the former Liverpool starlet is expected to shake of a minor hamstring injury:

“Raheem has a problem with his hamstring so I think it was a risk for him to play today. I hope he is 100% fit for Tuesday.”

Manchester United

Wayne Rooney was sidelined for the Red Devils’ 3-1 victory over Liverpool after suffering a hamstring problem in training. He is expected to miss their midweek tie against PSV Eindhoven, but Louis van Gaal believes he could be passed fit for their trip to Southampton next weekend:

“He is injured so we have to take care of him. I think he is very important for us and I don’t to take any risks so that’s why he doesn’t play today. I don’t think he will play against PSV Eindhoven, but maybe he shall play at Southampton. We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have three days to go.”

Stoke City

Jonathan Walters was not included in the Potters’ matchday squad at Arsenal due to a flare-up of his knee injury. Mark Hughes admitted that the Ireland international will undergo a scan in the coming days.

Tottenham

Nabil Bentaleb missed out against the Black Cats with an ankle injury and is expected to be ruled out for three to four weeks having suffered ligament damage.

Ryan Mason was involved in a heavy collision with Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon while he scored the winning goal. Mauricio Pochettino revealed after the match that Mason will undergo checks on Monday:

“We will assess Mason tomorrow. It was a big knock on the knee. It was a great goal and we showed how we try to play.”

West Bromwich Albion

Jonny Evans was taken off after 85 minutes against Southampton, although Tony Pulis later said that the new arrival likely just suffered cramping.

I think you need a big hitter in midfield regardless of form if you want to play this game a bit sensibly.

Hazard is crap at the moment and Silva has question marks. That leaves Sanchez who looks in good form but just not converting it into FPL points at the moment. I tend to pay less focus on fixtures when dealing with big hitters from attacking teams.

      In short, yes.

Surely its better to just keep mid-priced/cheap mids who are performing and keep cash ITB? Its not hard to pick up the big hitters when they start performing.

Also given that there are always expensive players that don't perform every year I think its a bit silly to assume that any of them are a must have when they're not performing yet.

If you think he's going to be out then it has to be Bony.

I think Yaya will offer better potential for points than Bony ( to go alongside Silva and Kolarov in FPL ), if Aguero is out.

GIven his history, I would be very surprised if he plays next match. Also He's ridiculously expensive for a non-performer.

yea, pretty poor. well, he was banging in goals at a rather unsustainable rate last season.

The only player to come out of that game with some pride would be Dier and Vertonghen. Everyone else in the Spurs squad was crap. Son's set pieces 😆

Was talking to a Spurs mate. They are an odd squad

            - One forward
-base of Mid field is Mason and Dier
            - Walker is one of the worst footballers you will ever see
            - Andros Townsend is your impact sub

Peeps, my team is just not working!
I was bidding on a CS for Swansea to at least get some points, but in vain.
On the other side, I had Mertz and was hoping for an Arsenal CS, but unfortunately he wasn't even on the teamsheet even when declared fit.
Not to mentioned Kun my captain and the continuous flop of Hazard!

Anyway, for a better chance, I need your help.
Already swapped Mertz -> Dawson with my FT (before the price falls) and got some deadwood to clear for hits now.

    My actual team;

    Butland - McCarthy
    Clyne - Kompany - Dawson - Targett - Naughton
    Silva - Hazard - Ayew - Albrighton - Westwood
    Kun - Pellè - Wilson

Who to ship out in priority?
Thinking of Hazard, Albrighton and Pellè!

Does anyone know of a useful defensive stat that correlates well with clean sheets?

      • 10 Years

Low Big Chances Conceded. Also a high ratio of Shots Conceded Outside the Box to Shots Conceded Inside the Box assuming Shots Conceded isn't too high.

The second one is also great for save points.

Thanks Balders. I'm working through the data from last year and the best I can achieve so far is goals conceded - that seems far too simple! For some of the data I was getting R-squared values that I never thought were possible.

          8 years, 7 months ago

Are you by any chance looking at correlation instead predictive ability? You need to be splitting the season into two halves and comparing 1st half stats to 2nd half CSs, also get yourself a bigger data set and use all seasons available!

    Romero McCarthy
    Azpil Targett Gomez Kola Naughton
    Pedro Mahrez YYT Ayew Westwood
    Wilson Benteke Aguero

For now I'm planning to hold my transfers and then fix up the keepers/defense next week. McCarthy should do well making a lot of saves vs the useless Spurs.

The only reason to get Romero out this week is a price drop given I don't plan to pick up DDG.

Evans didn't finish the game, "knock" apparently a cramp. But could be rotation risk as well if he's not fit

Wba has a decent fixture next week, but after has Everton and Palace. Both not looking great for a clean sheet. Chelsea, although not looking great at the moment has better fixtures after Arsenal..tough shout.

I love that many are still considering Aguero Captain material. Makes it much easier to pull away lately.

Did Kolarov for Darmian as I didn't want to be left behind on the train; plus I like his attacking potential. Does the rest of the team look good to go? Are the subs the right ones?
    Myhill (McCarthy)
    Kolarov Shaw Williams (Targett Richards)
    Mahrez Silva Pedro Ayew (Westwood)
    Benteke Aguero Gomis

Anyone else trusting their big hitters? After Arsenal, Hazard has a really good run of fixtures. Aguero is always a goal threat and when he starts scoring again he'll be essential. Sanchez looked very promising in the last few games, hit the post twice against Stoke too, I plan to bring him in after the Chelsea game. Already got the other two.

      I am currently carrying
      Sanchez and Aguero
      not Hazard.

Think im happy to carry 2 but not 3

I went through this last year with Hazard and I dropped him only for him to score the next game. But it's hard holding him through this. He's not worth 11.5m (now 11.3m) but saying that there are alot of budget options to accommodate him.

Yes. everyone is keeping him in the same hope.
I am also one of them and still scratching my head.

But got other more important transfer for now, like shipping Pelle and Mertz

I said from the beginning of the season that Hazard won't start scoring proper points until mid October, he never seems to start on fire. I will be getting him for sure, just not yet.

Its also about alternatives to be 'involved' in these big teams for when they do come good

Sanchez- Yes there is Ozil and Ramsey and maybe Walcott but we know Sanchez plays every game and none of those options 'doing it' right now
Hazard- has Pedro the for 2m cheaper and is scoring better
      Aguero- No rival

      Sell Payet.

Options include Ayew, Tadic, Mata if you have cash, Sako, Chadli.

All better options than Payet imo

Last season Sanchez scored 1 goal from approximately every 5 shots in the box. This season he has had 21 shots in the box. This is 4 per game as opposed to 2 per game last season.

He has missed a lot of chances, but this is an anomaly. He will start knocking them in. Reminds me of Suarez' spell of hitting the post a lot.

    Stekelen
    Kolorov Darmian Alderweireld (gomez, oxford)
    Silva Sanchez Pedro Mahrez (Westwood)
    Aguero Gomis Wilson

    Have 2FTs .4 itb

assuming Silva and Aguero are fit - which of these sounds the best

    A) Stekelen to Butland + Oxford to Evans (original plan)
    B) Stekelen to Butland + save ft
    C) Stekelen to Butland + Gomez to Skrtel
    D) other
