Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

There were no new victims over the weekend, and no red cards either, but the Suspension Tightrope sleeps for no man, and, after a flurry of cards, it duly snapped up a glut of unwilling funambulists to head into Gameweek 8.

Villa’s Ciaran Clark, Sunderland centre-half Seb Coates and Leicester left-back Jeffrey Schlupp all survived the week unscathed, though the former pair’s causes were helped by the fact they were both unused subs for respective clashes with Liverpool and Man United.

That trio were joined by four new protagonists, who all picked up their fourth cautions of the season in the Gameweek 7 match ups.

The first couple were served up in an action-packed lunchtime clash at White Hart Lane, as Spurs overcame table toppers City with an energetic display that saw five of their front six players booked once they took the lead in the second-half. Goalscorer Eric Dier and his centre midfield partner Dele Alli took their tallies to four for the season for fouls on Fernandinho and Patrick Roberts respectively. Dier has already been drafted in by over 42,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers since the weekend, making him the fourth more sought-after player of the Gameweek.

Next to don the soft shoes and prepare for an acrobatic stint was Sunderland’s Billy Jones. The right-back is no stranger to these parts, with eight bookings in two of the last three seasons, and at least four cards in all of the last five years, despite his failure to secure a regular role at West Brom or Sunderland in that time. Jones scythed down Memphis Depay to earn himself a first taste of the ’15/16 Tightrope.

Finally, the seventh of the current crop of Tightrope walkers – and perhaps one of the most familiar faces of recent times – was Newcastle’s Jack Colback. The combative midfielder joined the party after a first-half booking picked up for a foul on Loic Remy. Fortunately for Jack, injury interrupted his second-half, so he’ll have to wait until at least next week to see if he can add to his growing collection of cards.

True fans of the Tightrope will be more than aware of Colback’s “previous”. Nurtured under the wing of Lee Cattermole at Sunderland, the ginger-haired battler learned quickly from his mentor, picking up a single card in his debut season, upgrading that to three bookings the next term, then five in ’12/13 and seven in his final season with Cattermole on Wearside. A switch to neighbours Newcastle saw Colback blossom into a full-scale disciplinary menace and, in ’14/15, he duly upped his output to 12 cautions – a total bettered only by former team-mate Cattermole (14) last time out. Four cards in just under 650 minutes this season is no surprise, and puts him high on the list of those expected to fall into a ban in his next outing.

Below those players, there are 16 faces currently sitting on three yellows. Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Fonte, Oriol Romeu, Jonjo Shelvey, Yohan Cabaye and Erik Lamela are the new names, having collected a third caution of the campaign over the last two days.

There are no newly-suspended players so far this week, with only tomorrow’s Hawthorns clash between West Brom and Everton remaining.

Arsenal’s Gabriel is available for selection again, having served a one-match ban in yesterday’s 5-2 win at Leicester. Three players still remain suspended for Gameweek 8. Diego Costa, Kevin Mirallas and Valon Behrami all serve the last of three-bans against Southampton, Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.

I have Diouf, Aguero + Martial but I want Vardy. With fixtures I think Martial is the one to go :\

I have the same front 3 and if I was gonna get Vardy in the, frankly, it'd be for Aguero (with the 'winnings' used to upgrade someone to pedro / hazard)

Ageuro's playing gash (but then i said that about Alexis before transferring him out on Saturday morning)

Not liking this kind of top post, because I was just thinking to go without Vardy and get Ighalo instead.
Let's me keep Ayew instead of getting Hoolahan in.

Hoolahan was obviously main factor in my hestitation, limited game time and can't keep scoring like he has been..surely can't.

Remove Targett, he's about to fall in price in the near future. I'd have Dawson over Dier and Ben Davies over Francis.
Gomes over Butland is an option too.
Pelle/Diouf for Martial. Also not sure if Gosling is nailed, Drinkwater worth the extra 0.1.
Overall , lots of stuff I'd change.

    Butland
    Kolorov / Naughton / Richards*
    KDB / Payet / Mahrez / Ayew
    Diouff / Kun / Martial

    McCarthy / Countinho / Gomez / Ward

    * I had planned on bringing Azpil / Zouma in this week for Gomez, but after the freak show at SJP on Saturday I think i'll hold fire and risk playing Richards

Hi guys... Could really do with some advice! Last year my OR was less than 2000 and this year it's more like 2 mill 🙁

Have finally given in and played my WC:

    Gomes/Hennessy
    Bellerin, Williams, Evans, Martin, Oxford
    KDB, Mahrez, Payet, Sanchez, Gosling
    Aguero, Martial, Vardy

    0.2 ITB

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

I'd have Pelle over Martial. Also consider B.Davies over Martin?
Not sure if Cedric is nailed on at Southampton, if he is, I'd have him over Williams at 5.0

This is very interesting. Paul Riley's 'expected goal' model says there was about a 2.5% chance of Vardy getting six goals from the shots he's taken that have been on target.

    https://twitter.com/footballfactman/status/648222266979942400

Implication is that regression is imminent.

Also this article last week that reckons Leicester as a whole are due for some coins to finally start turning up tails.

    http://statsbomb.com/2015/09/are-west-ham-or-leicester-any-good/

I don't think either of these say Vardy is a bad buy, especially at his price. But maybe just curb the expectations a little.

Had a look at midfield goal threat last night and he was riding high there as well. Must...not...be tempted.

Really? Oh god, this is exactly the sort of FPL kryptonite that spoils every one of my seasons.

Well tbh, i did double up on LEI instead of WHU and i had Sakho early in the season. I just think that it will make selling Mahrez / Vardy easier in the near future. This way i have enough cash to get Lukaku or barkley in the midfield in a few GW's. So, took a risk on LEI two away games i do expect 2 goals total in those games from LEI so hopefully both Vardy / Mahrez are involved.

      Vardy on the brain.

Given how this season's going and the way FPL's fate dictates. I think I may hang on to Gomis this week...

Saw the latter last week and it's what's keeping me off Vardy (already have mahrez)

    Not played wildcard?
Is Gameweek 9 the best to play it?

I don't think there is a 'best' time to play it

I played mine when I was struggling - since I played it my form has picked up. I think the best time to play it is different for everyone and much depends on how you're performing at the moment.

Not sure.. GW 11 seems good considering the turn in fixtures for plenty of sides. i'm trying to wait until GW 14 tbh so the international break is not a worry and i can set myself up for the Christmas period.

    McCarthy, Hennessey
    Kolorov, Naughton, Bellerin, Targett, Browning
    Lens, Mahrez, Payet, Hazard, Mutch
    Wilson, Aguero, Martial

Would like KDB but don't know who to ditch?
Also with Wilson out who do I switch to.

4.2m in bank 1 FT still got WC avaliable

Morning all, the Wilson injury has given me a big headache.

    Butland/Ruddy
    Kolarov/Mert/Francis/Nyom/Huth
    Sanchez/KDB/Mane/Mahrez/Westwood
    Aguero/Martial/Wilson

1FT, 0.6 ITB. Straight swap to Ighalo, or look at selling Mert and getting a more expensive striker for a hit?

No, probably not. Swans have been a bit on the slide lately but three half-decent fixtures next and Ayew could easily score in one or more of them.

I'd went the other way 2 weeks ago and corrected it last GW but I'd be holding with Swans home fixtures

Before the weekend games, I planned Coutinho to KdB for next week. A couple of assists shouldn't change that, right?

Keeping Coutinho wouldn't be the worst thing to do, but KdB just has tastier fixtures incoming.

similar issue for me with Walcott. gonna wait till cl games over, should avoid the price rise

I can even afford a price rise, so will definitely wait.

My plan has had a bit of a setback due to Gomis poor form, but I think I'll give him one last chance, while Pelle visits the bridge.
