Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 10

Five players toppled off the Suspension Tightrope this Gameweek, as James Milner, Jeffrey Schlupp, Erik Pieters, Fernandinho and Jack Colback totted up their fifth cautions of the campaign and incurred a one-match ban.

Fortunately for the former quartet, they will serve out their suspensions in Capital One Cup clashes in midweek. Colback, on the other hand, misses Newcastle’s home tie against Stoke next Gameweek as the Magpies were knocked out in the previous round of the competition by Sheffield Wednesday. The midfielder was already a doubt for the Potters clash anyway, after he was forced off early in the second period due to a challenge from Lee Cattermole – early reports indicate he left the stadium on crutches.

In terms of other new suspensions, Fabricio Coloccini received a straight red for a foul on Steven Fletcher that led to the Black Cats’ penalty opener. Like Colback, he’ll be unavailable for selection when the Magpies welcome Stoke to St James’ Park, though reports this evening suggest that the Tyneside team are set to appeal the decision.

Post match, Magpies manager Steve McClaren clearly felt that whistler Bobby Madley made a match-changing error:

“It’s simple: he’s wrong in my opinion. Referees are part and parcel of the game and you control your performance – you can’t control the opponent or the referee and they can affect the result, and they have done today, not so much the opponent, but definitely the referee.”

McClaren’s opposite number, Sam Allardyce, also reckoned the dismissal was a little harsh on the Argentine:

“We’ve taken full of advantage of a piece of good fortune. I did think it’s a foul, personally. I’ve had a look at it. If he hadn’t made contact with him, I think Steven Fletcher would have scored. It was on his left foot, on his best side. It [the red card] is a bit harsh, but those are the rules and we’ve taken full advantage of that today. We had a harsh decision go against us last week, this week it went for us. I thought it was a penalty. The fortunate thing is the sending off”.

Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic and Everton veteran Gareth Barry were both given their marching orders for two bookable offences but also fulfil their obligations in midweek cup matches. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is unconcerned over Barry’s midweek absence for a home clash with Norwich, claiming “he was going to be rested anyway”.

Sadio Mane was sent off in a farcical turn of events at Anfield, entering the referee’s notebook twice in stoppage time after bagging an equaliser in the 85th minute. Much to the relief of his 9% ownership, the Senegal international serves his time when Saints play host to Aston Villa in the League Cup, returning for a tasty home fixture against the Cherries.

Elsewhere on the Tightrope, Jonjo Shelvey edged one step closer to a brief spell on the sidelines, earning his fourth yellow of the season. Ciaran Clark, Eliaquim MangalaMatteo Darmian, Oriol Romeu, Billy Jones, Dele AlliMark Noble, Erik Lamela and Claudio Yacob make up the numbers in a ten-strong band of miscreants.

Dwight Gayle completed his one-match ban and returns to Crystal Palace’s squad for their home encounter against Manchester United next Gameweek. With Connor Wickham still uncertain to recover in time from a calf complaint, the 5.1-priced marksman is likely to lead the line ahead of Fraizer Campbell and Patrick Bamford.

As always, mainly thanks to our resident Tightrope expert Anorak, who has been keeping us up-to-date via his twitter stream.

    Ok guys... Those who've watched the Bournemouth drubbings of late (sorry Bournemouth fans), where are they conceding their goals?

    A) via aerial threat in the box (e.g. Pelle)
    B) via pace and running at the defence (e.g. Mane)

      A) Lots of goals
      B)Lots of goals
      If there is a C , lots of goals

      How about Bournemouth's conceded goals against Man City last week?

      A) via aerial threat in the box (e.g. Pelle)

          If I were to say , I would say - they cant deal with crosses , aerial or grounded

          Pelle is a better (C) choice imo

    Morning DZers - seen in the press this morning that Van Gaal got annoyed about being asked more questions about Rooney's lack of form. Just a thought for you all, but is it possible he's playing the way he's been told to? Having watched some of Utd's games this season it always looks like he's a holding player in attack, rather than an out and out attacker...

      A. But just. My reasoning is Pulis will be extra defensive against LEI meaning Berahino will have to do some backtracking. He's got through quality to get on the score sheet and has pens but at least Bojan will be in a team that's going to go for it. Newcastle aren't exactly keeping it tight at the back too.

    Thanks to Eden Hazardous advice, I will probably play AOA this week.

    How does it look?

    Butland
    Kolarov l Bertrand
    YYT l Sanchez l Payet l Tadic l Marhez
    Lukaku l Vardy l Pelle

    Bench: Hennessey - Dawson Moreno Souare

    1FT / 3.6ITB

    1) B.Davies + Dawson---> Phil Jones + Simpson
    2) B Davies + Lukaku---> Moreno + Bony
    3) Dawson + Lukaku--> Phil Jones + Bony
    4) Waste 1 of the 2 FT if None
    Bony I thought as its anyway for a surplus transfer why not for next 2-3 GWs....especially next is NOR

      Have LEI kept a CS this season? Unless you going in for Kasper purely for save points---even then I'd argue Myhill remains a superior option.

      Dawson's spot is guaranteed.. Jones has only started 3 consecutive games as CB this season. Still a rotation risk.

    Morning all.

    I was thinking of bringing in a Coleman or Dick Van Dyke this week in defence, but I'm not sure I trust Everton without Jagielka. So think I'm going bring in Vincent.

    As for attack. Martial is a wast of space being plonked out on that wing so choice is...

                  In short Yes, I'd even take a -4 for Coleman if I didnt had 3 hoeme Ds this week.
                  Everton chances of clene is equal to City or Soton if not more. Plus if you get him now you wont transfer him out for next 8-10 Gws given he stays fit.

        I am tempted by him I have to be honest.... More than Coleman I think.

        No love for a City defender ?

        When Kompany players they tend to keep clean sheets.

          I have Kolorov, so yeah I do like City DF. But I think that Southampton could match them in defensive returns from now til the end of the season.

          Both great options though

      I think Coleman can provide assist..but Kompany is not a bad shout..why not Phil Jones?

    Hello DZers! Was just wondering if you could help me with a quandry.

    I can afford any midfielder in the game (to replace Coutinho), but I'm really struggling to pick one. Any suggestions?

    Rest of my front 8 are:

    Mahrez - KDB - Payet - Sanchez - _______?
    -----------Pelle - Ighalo - Vardy

    My initial thoughts are Erikson, Mata/Herrera, Ozil/Wally, Mane or the slightly more left-field Barkley

      I think the question is, what's your formation each week.

      If you buy a premium mf players you'll find yourself benching ighalo each week.

      Personally I would leave the mf as it is, and get in a Bony or Lukaka.

        * what I meant was downgrade Couthino to a cheap 5th mf player.

          Yeah. I kind of like the 3-5-2 with Ighalo in reserve. He's awesome value and you can't really find anyone with as much potential in the same price bracket in MF. So I think I'm just gunna stick with him as my 8th attacker

    Quick morning vote check, folks (2 FT):

    A) Dawson (or Richards/Francis) to van Dijk

    B) Martial & Albrighton to Ighalo & Özil (and bench one of Ighalo/Mahrez/Pelle each week)

      Ceiling for Mahrez - Five double figure hauls in ten weeks.

    So it looks like there are 6 players vying it out for the front 3 spots. All things considered I think they go in this order. Whatcha reckon?

    Pelle (7.9) > Kane > Lukaku > Vardy (6.4) > Ighalo > Bony

    1. Squirting Skrtel

        No question he is the best value, but we gotta spend the money somewhere and with Kun out things aren't so stretched. I'm on a WC and I'm struggling between the first 4 (Ighalo/Bony slipped out of contention for me).

      Looks solid. I have almost an identical squad except for Kol instead of Lompany and Janmaat instead of evans. Am considering Mahrez>Eriksen/Ozil/Mane/Mata. Utterly confused so I just wanted to know if you think hed outscore or atleast keep up with these guys and why.

        If you bought mahrez at 5:5 he is such good value for money.
        When Aguero is back funds wont be as loose as they are now.

        I believe Ozil will outscore him, Mane is very similar and Eriksen is too hit and miss for me.

        If i had the money id replace him for Ozil or Mane, but im going to stick

    Which to choose with 2 FT, exact 0.1 mn in bank so much less flexibility

    1) B.Davies(no longer 1st choice) + Dawson---> Phil Jones + Simpson
    2) B Davies + Lukaku---> Moreno + Bony
    3) Dawson + Lukaku--> Phil Jones + Bony
    4) Waste 1 of the 2 FT

    Bony for Lukaku I thought as its anyway for a surplus transfer why not for next 2-3 GWs....especially next is NOR
