Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 12

We carry out our club-by-club scan of the treatment rooms, on the day that West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet was ruled out for up to three months with an ankle injury sustained against Everton.

Elsewhere, Liverpool face an anxious wait for the full prognosis on Mamadou Sakho’s knee problem, whilst City are boosted by Sergio Aguero’s progress, as Wilfried Bony is left nursing his hamstring.

Arsenal

Santi Cazorla was replaced by Manuel Flamini at half time of the North London derby, in what initially looked like a tactical decision. Arsene Wenger revealed in his post-match press conference, however, that the Spanish playmaker was suffering from dizziness that affected his mobility:

“We suffered in the first half because Cazorla was at 30 per cent of his potential, he was dizzy. I was sitting there thinking do I take him off or not? You never know, maybe it will get better. At half-time I took him off, and in the second half we had a bit better balance. He is not sick, he was just dizzy and could not move, you could see that on the pitch. I did not really know what he had, so at half-time I took him off, I hope it is nothing bad, but it does not look like it, because he says he is alright now.”

Bournemouth

Eddie Howe confirmed that Marc Pugh – who was withdraw after 45 minutes last Gameweek – was unavailable for selection after failing to shake off a knock.

Chelsea

The Blues defender Kurt Zouma has withdrawn from duties for the France Under 21 side due to an unspecified injury earlier today.

Crystal Palace

Eagles fitness coach John Salako has issued an update on Dwight Gayle, who missed the weekend win over Liverpool due to a hamstring injury:

“Dwight works very hard and, unfortunately, I think he’s got a Grade Two tear – he’s had the scan. He could face three-to-four weeks on the sidelines now. He is young so we’ll see, it could be two weeks, it could be (up to) four.”

Everton

Tyias Browning picked up a minor knee injury in training during the week, ruling him out for England U21’s match-up against Bosnia on Thursday. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez went on to say:

“We had a warm-up game on Wednesday and he picked up an injury in his knee. It is nothing serious but we’ll have to speak with England and manage that situation. I don’t think he’ll be available for the next game, but he could be available for the game against Switzerland in Brighton.”

Fellow full-back Brendan Galloway is also being assessed ahead of England U21’s upcoming pair of matches. Earlier today, manager Gareth Southgate revealed:

“Brendan is being assessed now, he is with us. It’s a muscular injury but we don’t want to take any chances. Maybe he is okay for Thursday; maybe he is okay for Monday. We don’t know.”

Liverpool

The Merseysiders were rocked earlier this evening after scans confirmed that Mamadou Sakho is set for a period on the sidelines after limping off early during the weekend loss to Palace. Liverpool expect to discover the likely period of absence tomorrow, with the Frenchman set to see a specialist.

Jordon Ibe has withdrawn from England U21 duties against Bosnia and Switzerland with a knee injury, The youngster suffered no more than bruising, though, and is expected to be available for the Gameweek 13 trip to City.

James Milner sat out Sunday’s defeat having suffered a hamstring injury in their Europa League clash against Rubin Kazan. After the Anfield loss, Jurgen Klopp played down the severity of the injury:

“In Kazan, he had not the best moment with his muscle. But he’s an experienced player, and it was nothing serious and in this moment he can train.”

Manchester City

Wilfried Bony pulled up with a hamstring problem at Villa Park and had to be substituted at the 24-minute mark. Although Manuel Pellegrini doesn’t expect the Ivorian to play for his country during the international break, he did suggest that Bony could travel with the squad to get his injury assessed:

“It is difficult to know at this moment how serious his hamstring injury is. We will see tomorrow. I don’t know – maybe he will have to go and join up with Ivory Coast. His country must review the injury. But I don’t think he will be able to play and he will return to Manchester.”

In more positive developments for the Sky Blues, Pellegrini reported that a quartet of injured players are progressing well in their rehabilitation, with Sergio Aguero targeting a return next Gamweek against Liverpool:

“I hope that this week he [Aguero], (David) Silva, (Samir) Nasri and (Pablo) Zabaleta, will work with the physiotherapist and next Monday they will start working with the squad. We will see in the way he improves this week, but I think there is a chance he can be (back for Liverpool).”

Earlier today, Aguero took to twitter to confirm:

“Giving it my all on recovery work. There’s still more to go but getting better by the day!”

Manchester United

Marouane Fellaini missed Manchester United’s 2-0 home win over West Bromwich Albion and will not travel with Belgium ahead of their back-to-back friendlies, given that he sustained an injury in training.

Norwich City

Nathan Redmond was sidelined for the Canaries’ win over Swansea and has withdrawn from international duty with the England U21s, having injured his thigh in midweek.

Newcastle United

In the wake of the Magpies’ 1-0 road victory against Bournemouth, stand-in shot-stopper Rob Elliot revealed that he played against the advice of the club’s doctors. The former Charlton keeper is nursing a thigh injury but is confident that a fortnight of rest will hold him in good stead when Leicester City pay a visit next Gameweek.

“If you ask the manager, I was always playing. If you ask the doctor, then I probably wasn’t playing last week either. I was always going to play, and I didn’t know how good or bad it was going to be. It wasn’t too bad today, it was quite painful and I just had to get underneath the ball and lift it, you just don’t want to let the team down. I said to the manager, if you want me to play I will play, but just so long as I’m not going to hinder the team. I’m going to go and see the specialist and hopefully get some good news off him. Get some treatment, get some strength, get some rest. Hopefully I’ll be ready for Leicester and hopefully (we can) start showing the team that we can be, rather than the team we could be.”

Sunderland

John O’Shea is carrying a hamstring injury and will be assessed by Sunderland’s medical team to determine his availability for Ireland’s Euro 2012 qualifying play-off:

“Rob Elliot, John O’Shea, Paul McShane, Alan Judge, and Shane Long will all be assessed by their respective clubs before reporting for international duty.”

West Ham United

The Hammers have been dealt a major blow after Dimitri Payet was ruled out for around three months with an ankle injury sustained against Everton on Saturday. His replacement against the Toffees, Enner Valencia, was forced off with a similar complaint and will be assessed by a specialist early next week, the club’s official website has revealed.

He's has more goals in him and his set pieces are deadly.

with kane(best strike iin 2015 in epl n terms of goals) hitting form can see him getting in the points in terms of assists too

Good. Because I have him since GW11 and haven't got any returns yet, was hoping for an assurance that he was a good pick and that I shouln't sell him too quickly. I must agree, his set pieces are amazing, hopefully he will get more points soon because he hasn't been involved in last 9 Spurs' goals at all!

Because Coutinho is a guy who won't score anything 5 weeks in a row after you buy him, you sell him and then he gets a brace. Also, I heard that he played on the wing vs. Palace

It depends on when do you want to bring Kun and if you want to do this at all, if not then Yaya/Sterling would be tempting. How much money can you invest in Payet replacement?

Well then as mentioned above Eriksen might be an option. It's between him and Mata in my opinion (yes, Mata is not popular here, but given United's nice upcoming fixtures I think he might explode)

I have had some poor experiences with Coutinho so I'm skeptical, but that said his stats are pretty great. Total shots (52) and shots on target (15) are comparable to Sanchez (53 and 16). He just takes more shots from distance (54% vs. 30%).

Without any Man City cover I would consider Sterling or KDB at a stretch. Willian is a good bduget option with Chelsea's fixtures.

Just got rid of KDB to free money up... his stats aren't great and just seems to be a name thrown around alot here.

Coutinho's stats are what attracts me and his points since Klopp came... i may just take the risk.

Pretty good run of fixtures after Man City too. Plenty of good reasons. You will be tempted in about 3 or 4 weeks to hook him. Resist.

I will probably do Payet -> Gosling to free up some funds.

It will allow me to have possibility to do Vardy -> Aguero/Kane etc. if it looks like Leicester will struggle against top sides.

Is Cedric benching just tactical or is it time to burn a transfer Cedric to Bertrand or VVD.

If Cedric comes back into the fold next GW then it's fine. But if he is falling a bit out of favor then not worth it to hold. I am sort of like my defenders to play 90 minutes every single game without rest. That's just me

    @Ryan

Well logically the likes of Sánchez, Özil and Giroud have massively improved their link-up play and understanding at the focal point of attack with another year as teammates.

Look at the discrepancy between these two years - Arsenal had great underlying stats last year, but their early struggles had more to with their conversion rates - https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=https://img.washingtonpost.com/news/fancy-stats/wp-content/uploads/sites/28/2015/11/nld_xgd_change.png&w=1484

Huge improvements from last season individually, Sánchez leads the league by a good margin in xG, & Ozil as well is leading expected assists by a large margin - https://img.washingtonpost.com/news/fancy-stats/wp-content/uploads/sites/28/2015/11/nld_playerxg.png

As a team though is there any difference. You suggested that Arsenal are even more attacking now and I question that.

You have to understand I'm trying to see how Arsenal are more likely to break down a Pulis defence now than they were in the past. If their overall attack is better now than in the past then I'll give credit to your point. Individual stats aren't really appropriate for this discussion.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

Well first off I never said their playstles have changed, my point was "Arsenal are just operating on a different wavelength right now tbh, their xG is insane & the amount of balls they whip into the danger zone is crazy." The graphs/tables show their Team's attack (xG/xGA) has massively improved from last year, the attack Pulis faced last year is in essence less efficient.

In terms of playstyle perhaps they haven't changed so much. They're simply more efficient now, individual stats in terms of the key players will go hand-in-hand with teams overall xG though. Arsenal's incredible xG is simply a by-product of all of Cazorla, Özil, Sánchez (& Ramsey) all performing better than last year individually.

And thats cool because thats what I was questioning. Evidence to suggest they are on a different wavelength.

Finally you have provided that evidence too now btw so thank you for your research. Their underlying stats do suggest that as you pointed out below but their goals haven't shown that yet. So I have to accept your point that you are right in that they have improved their attack but just not their finishing yet.

Simple maths suggest they are on track for about 70 goals this season. In the past 5 seasons they have scored between 68 and 74 goals.

Thats goal difference. Remember this discussion is purely about attack. Not defence and attack. Its obvious Arsenals defence has improved this season thanks to having a proper goal keeper and a solid young defensive mid. This however has nothing to do with an improvement in their offensive output.

That takes into account chances created & chances conceded though, Arsenal have an improved defense but not drastically as opposed to last seasons

Balders table was more useful once he told me what he was looking at. Yes their underlying stats of shots, big chances, SiB etc have improved so I can finally see the evidence that probably should have been pointed out at the start. Goals are still the same but we will have to see whether they improve in that department.

xG is a way more accurate metric than anything a table or any stats in the members section here will show you. xG takes into account all of that but more accurately determining shot placement as well.

Sorry, but all the graphs I showed in way or another proved that.

But I'm not interested in Arsenals defence. Your tables took into account their defensive stats

So because it takes that into account, you're simply dismissing it entirely? Are you realistically expecting Arsenal's defense to have improved that much though? The graph I linked above implies they haven't, the same graph used there is implemented in his calculations for xGA, so logically that means the growth has therefore come from their xG. The tables I linked also showed that.

This is an extremely rigid way to view things.

You can't expect me to separate the defensive stats from the offensive stats. Its much easier to communicate their improvement in attack by just using attacking stats. Hence why Balders approach was much easier to get a handle of. Its just a communication thing and I found it much easier to understand.

Bottom of last page, would appreciate another response

I want to swap payet for a palace midfielder before the price drop but really don't want to be stung again on international duty, plus I already did bony for lukaku Sunday night!

Risk it now for cabaye (think he'll do better at home than bolaise as teams defend deeper)? Or wait and swallow a point 0.2 drop?

Does anyone know the international exposure of that palace midfield? Do France have any big games?

Who would you swap for Lukaku out of ighalo and vardy? Very hard to choose as i don't particularly want to get rid of either but might have to with luks fixtures. Also who would you downgrade out of sanchez and kdb?

Could do kdb to coutinho and ighalo to lukaku but is it worth it?

Nice grav. In my opinion it's not worth it at all. No reason to sell KDB, he's one of the best players in the league and surely will return points when Silva and Kun are back. I'd just wait with buying Lukaku, selling Sanchez or KDB only to get the Belgian striker is not worth it

no offence but Austin would go to a slighly higher level club

for eg the likes of spurs eve soton or palace springs to mind

I think Austin would fit in nicely at palace. and they are in need of a good striker. would consider him in jan if he joins palace

Is Willian reliable as a short term Payet replacement?

I'm not expecting an upturn in Chelsea's form, far from it, I expect them to continue to toil, but their next few fixtures should at least give them 6 goals minimum in the next 6, and Hazard/Costa don't look like scoring them..

        Spurs - Che = 2-0
        Che - Bou = 2-1
        Lei - Che = 3-1 (Mourinho sacked)
        Che - sun = 1-1
        Che - Wat = 1-2

But still, that's 6 goals in 6 games and that was me being harsh..

Yup my thinking too, I don't necessarily need to match Payet, I just need one or two good games from them and maybe even a sneaky double price rise before my WC.

IF (big if) Chelsea turn it around with their fixtures, and Mou isn't sacked, then Willian could be gold-dust (convincing myself)

Some people say Ozil dont score enough for his price. But bonus points should make up for it.

For eg he got 3 bonus and 2 bonus in one game by getting just a single assist

Compare this to a so called goalscoring mid Mane(4), ozil Beats him by a big margin(10). Only Payet and Mahrez has more bonus for mids)

It's not just Ozil, it's all mids. One assist and they can earn more BPs then a striker who scored a goal. One of the reasons to why I went 3-5-2 to start the season.

Lucky they don't consider champions league results...

Sad. Should have been Ranieri by miles in my eyes.

Both deserved it. Like for the player of the month ... it was Ozil's assists record vs Vardy's goals record.

Well to be quite honest, not sure why Wenger would get Manager of the Month. I think its a bigger feat to have LEI where they are at the moment than ARS.

I'm happy for him. We need to win the league before he leaves!

Flip a 10-sided-coin between Mané, Tadic, Coutinho, Delafayooo, Cabaye, Bolasie, Barkley, Ayew, Willian, Wijnaldum...

Good old times when everyone had him and/or Henderson before the season started

I picked Stanislas last night, since i will need the extra .1 to get Agu in for SOU game if he is fit. Alli is the best bet for xmas if you can afford it. That was my 2nd option, and i really had to convince myself not to do it, because i would have issues elsewhere.

    Butland
    Kolarov Smalling Bellerín*
    Sanchez KDB Ozil Mahrez
    Lukaku Pelle Vardy
    Schmeichel Dawson Francis Westwood*
    1ft, 1,3 m itb.
Probably best to save if nothing bad happens, right?

Does Bolasie play up front or LM?

Up front but his finishing makes Sterling look like Shearer

120 behind ml leader. Do I need to look for players he doesn't have?
Long way to go so no need to go crazy but with marginal decisions it might be better to rule out his picks?

I would be picking the best team possible regardless. Too early to be gambling at this stage imo. captaincy can still be a good differential

You can make up a 100 pts pretty quick if you get your capt. right and just a couple of different picks. No need to go crazy
