Captain Sensible – Gameweek 13

Our sixth members’ article of the international break sees us turn our attentions to the main captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With a 34% share of the vote, Romelu Lukaku is the stand-out captaincy pick ahead of Everton’s home tie against Aston Villa. Profiting from their agreeable schedule, the 8.6-priced Belgian notched two goals and as many assists in the last two Gameweeks, elevating him to joint-second (seven goals) in the league-wide scoring charts. The fact that Villa shipped 13 goals in their previous five road clashes provides further incentive to hand Lukaku the armband.

Jamie Vardy (14%) can equal a Premier League record when Leicester City make the trip to Newcastle, as he attempts to net for the tenth successive start. Whilst there’s no disputing Vardy’s points potential, there are still major doubts over his availability, with Claudio Ranieri remaining uncertain over his star striker’s fitness in yesterday’s press conference. Staying within the Leicester camp, Riyad Mahrez claims a surprisingly low 3% backing for the St James’ Park clash.

Dispelling his slow start to the campaign, Harry Kane (9%) boasts five goals in his last three starts. Spurs’ premier frontman has developed a knack for scoring in derbies, so he’ll fancy his chances at home to a West Ham United rearguard that’s failed to register a shut-out in their previous seven match-ups.

Alexis Sanchez lies just outside the top three with a 6% backing. The Fantasy Premier League’s most expensive (11.6) midfielder has drawn three consecutive blanks but will be encouraged by the fact that West Bromwich Albion rank top for goals conceded at home (12). Mesut Ozil (4%) scoops a more modest share of the vote, despite chalking up eight assists in his previous six starts.

Despite doubts over his minutes, Sergio Aguero has been backed by 4% of voters for City’s clash with Liverpool tomorrow evening. With just one assist to his name in three outings, Kevin De Bruyne (2%) narrowly sneaks into the top 10.

Eden Hazard and Odion Ighalo (2%) matched each other stride for stride in our Captain Poll. The former has no form to speak of (one goal and two assists across 11 starts) but could punish a Norwich City defence that’s failed to keep a clean sheet on their travels. Meanwhile, the latter has been directly involved (five goals and two assists) in all of Watford’s last seven goals, underlining his value as a budget forward.

He won't imo . It's a tough fixture not the sort you give a youngster a chance in, Sterling might play as a false 9 but I think Pelle would not have played up Aguero's fitness if he did not intend to start him

    Thoughts appreciated folks - with Kompany injured, best option;
    A) Play Richards (eve)
    B) Kompany > Kelly (SUN) for -4 (free up cash for Kun next GW)

    1. goriuanx
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

      I'd do B.

      6 - 4 = 2. Richards will probably score 1. 1 point gain + in a position to get Aguero

Don't get Kelly. Could easily be dropped for Ward. Worth the extra 0.1 or 0.2 for Delaney or Souare IMO

    It would be:

    1. Pelle & Kane to Ighalo & Aguero for free next week

Perhaps, although I'm not so sure - Sanchez, Mane & Mahrez look fairly solid to me. Bolasie is a gamble, but he has 2 goals in 5 in the league and just scored in both games over the INT break, plus he has 2 plum fixtures up next (SUN, NEW). If he flops then I'd look to upgrade via a Kolarov downgrade.

The money tied up in the keeper is the same as me and I feel its a restriction I don't like and one I've never really had.

Yeah, completely agree. Far too much tied up in DDG and 3 expensy defenders. Kolarov's days look numbered.

Depending on how he goes this week, I'm a little tempted with Pelle -> Benteke next week.

      Very good pick imo

I always tend to get him at some point most seasons , if you can catch one of his scoring runs the points pile up

Yep, good fixtures and lots of chances created in recent weeks.

Could fail, but could be spectacular, never know with him.

Anybody else sad to see Aguero return to the game ?

It won't be long before he's in just about every team again and captain in just about every team to boot...

That... AGGGUUUEEERROOO !!....shout doesn't half ring a bit hollow when everybody has him.

I much prefer seeing all these pick n mix teams in his absence.

If Aguero was still injured it wouldn't be that pick 'n' mix 🙂

      United defender - Arsenal/Southampton defender - Kolarov

      Payet - Sanchez - Mahrez - KDB

      Lukaku - Vardy - Kane

Also I don't like the idea of captaining him every single week, it takes away of the fun of FPL

Yeah but % wise for the game as a whole it's a bit samey samey once he's up to speed.

As we stand now at least the (c) pick gets some decent variety....

      I think the opposite

Separates the Men from the boys constructing a decent team with Aguero eating up 13m of the funds

When he got injured last season he was at over 90% ownership in active teams and over 80% captaincy (FFF)....

Aye...there's always that..Thing is despite patting ourselves on the back for picking him you really don't need to be a genius to work out he's the best pick in the game...

            8 years, 5 months ago

Agreed but then picking the other 14 on a shoestring is where we can really come into our own.

Agreed. The game is absolutely trickier with him out of it. He's just so d4mn expensive.

Yeah I know. He's just about the only player we need to pick out of necessity...and that's my point....The game shrinks a bit.

Help! On a -4 and my team looks like this:

    Myhill

    Evans | Monreal | Rose | Dann

    Mahrez | Ayew | Mane

    Pelle | Kane (c) | Vardy

    (Butland | Moreno | Silva | Payet)

    A) Leave the team how it is this week
    B) Payet out for another hit
    C) Silva out for another hit

      Hits are not always bad

I tend to take 4-5 in the 1st half of the season to react to form and bandwagons and try and not take one in the 2nd half.
