Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 13

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle is the most high profile of this week’s Suspension Tightrope protagonists after collecting a fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s home loss to Stoke.

The Italian will now miss next weekend’s trip to the Etihad and, although he will return in time for a plum home clash against Villa in Gameweek 15, it’s fair to say the exodus is picking up pace – over 120,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already parted company as we scramble to bring in the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Sergio Aguero.

Pelle earned a late caution for kicking the ball away as his barren run continued – he’s scored just once in the last five Gameweeks. Post-match, Ronaldo Koeman was unhappy over the Italian’s lack of self-restraint:

“It’s all about the frustration of the player. He was not playing well, he was not scoring and the team was not winning, but you have to control yourself always. That’s difficult, we know. But, okay, if it doesn’t happen today maybe it happens next week. It’s always a question if you are one booking from a suspension. It’s always when, when, when it happens. Okay, normally you have to control yourself. He knows. We know. We have to accept it and we will play another [number] nine next week.”

Pelle is one of six players to succumb to a one-match Tightrope ban so far. Liverpool will be devoid of Lucas’ services for their home encounter against Swansea next weekend. Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey will also miss that Anfield encounter – handed the role in “the hole” at home to Bournemouth, the former Red bagged himself a goal and assist before earning his fifth yellow of the season.

Over at the Hawthorns, Tony Pulis has decisions to make at left-back after Chris Brunt picked up his fifth booking in the Baggies’ home win over Arsenal – the Northern Ireland international now misses next weekend’s trip to West Ham. Mark Noble will also be unavailable for that one after earning his fifth yellow in today’s loss at White Hart Lane, whilst Dele Alli will be absent as Spurs host Chelsea next weekend.

There are now 17 players on this week’s Tightrope, with Gameweek 13 handing us five new entries. Bournemouth playmaker Matt Ritchie, Leicester centre-half Robert Huth, Norwich’s Seb Bassong and Liverpool pair Emre Can and Nathaniel Clyne are the men in question.

Palace duo Wilfried Zaha and Yohan Cabaye, along with Sunderland’s Billy Jones, could yet topple of this week’s Tightrope – all three go into tomorrow’s night’s match at Slehurst Park on four yellows apiece.

In terms of newly-available players, Tottenham will welcome back Erik Lamela for next week’s trip to Stamford Bridge after the Argentine served a one-match ban at home to West Ham earlier today. West Brom will have Gareth McAuley available for their clash with the Hammers after the Irishman missed yesterday’s win over Arsenal.

Slaven Bilic’s side, meanwhile, will be without the services of James Collins once again – the Welshman serves the last of a three-match ban against the Baggies.

Sanchez sellers remember what happened the last time he blanked 4 times. 3 big double digit scores on a row

Not saying he'd do it again but we know he;s class and will bounce back

I haven't drilled the stats but he was unfortunate not to return something on Saturday.

He clearly IS going to score goals. And he scores in bunches. These three fixtures could be it.

    Butland (Ruddy)
    Cedric Azpi Kolarov (Nyom, Huth)
    Ozil, Sanchez, KDB, Mahrez (Wanyama)
    Pelle, Vardy, Lukaku

    2FT, 0.8 ITB.

How is Moreno rising even after 2,1,2 points in last 3 matches?! Rose 0.2mn even with these scores n that too as a defender...
I mean are the amateurs also going through underlying attacking stats to make their choices now? If yes then no doubt this is the toughest year of FPL by far with million of good players!

My little model churned out some decent predictions/results this GW. Quite happy with it.

Model Score/Rank for the GW----GW 13 FPL Points

    Kane: 17.40------ 13
    Ozil: 15.65---------8
    Vardy: 14.63------7
    Giroud: 12.31-----7
    Lukaku: 11.27---12
    .
    .
    Mane: 8.37--------1
    Sanchez: 7.84----1
    .

    .
    Pelle: 2.679-------1

The Predicted score from the model is not a predicted FPL score btw. Its simply a score churned out by the model for a specific player for a particular GW against a particular opponent, its helpful to rank players I suppose. Higher number = Better prospect for FPL points in the GW.

Been using it to evaluate my captaincy & transfer decisions the last 2 weeks. Kane turned out alright his week. 😀

Lukaku an obvious blip, but that's mainly down to Aston Villa's surprisingly decent defensive statistics, and the fact that at the end of the day it is a statistical model and has its own limitations. 🙂

I lived in NZ for about 7 months Ryan. Quite a large Scottish population. I'm guessing they would like the familiarity and the nod to home of the Union Jack.

Are there any flags with particularly symbolism that might be favoured by the Maori population?

Top left has a koru shape, very much a maori shape. Ferns also have Maori symbolism.

The South Island are more traditional and don't like change, strong Scottish roots in Otago/Southland in particular. The North Island is more progressive and are perhaps more willing to part ways with British heritage.

Yeah ok. That's interesting. I thought the top left looked like a Maori shape but I don't know enough to be sure.

I suppose the fern is mainstream enough to have appeal across the board. If it's on the ABs shirt it must be!

Your characterisation of the islands fit as the South is not really all that developed is it? Lots of beautiful untouched terrain. God that place is gorgeous...

I think the weather is the only real drawback, everything else is exactly what you want in a city I think.

The South Island has only 1m people living in it so I guess it seems undeveloped. Christchurch is still a mess because of the earthquakes as well which doesn't help

                  Yeah, the winter blows...

I visited Christchurch and was extremely sad. This was in 2013.

Went to the information tourist shop and the lady was pointing out all these things that *used* to be there.

I had hoped to see the shoots of recovery, but if they were there they weren't visible.

Progress is still slow in Christchurch, so much to rebuild, and the process is slow and drawn out.

A lot of untouched beauty in the South Island, I hope it continues to maintain that and shun development at every opportunity.

It's still just a flag. The British heritage certainly won't disappear.
As a Canadian, I'd say that the system of law, and of government are much more important, and meaningful, from a heritage perspective.

I agree entirely. I think we should have just as much courage as you guys showed when you changed your flag. I guess the issue is that most aren't convinced by the alternative designs. The Canadian flag seems so perfect

The thing is that no flag will ever be perfect. The flag was changed long before I was around, but there was a fair amount of opposition to it. If there would have been a NZ-style referendum, then we would still have a union jack.

The first referendum is for the best alternative design. Then the second referendum will put the best design against the current flag. I think thats the best way to enforce change, but even then, I think most will stick with the current flag by default.

            Absolutely.

It will still resonate with a certain demographic though, which is relevant when considering the likelihood of the various outcomes. Rgardless of its actual meaning and pragmatic effect.

Not one of the referendum options but an interesting looking flag. People aren't keen on a black flag though due to certain connotations of what that might represent.

Cant console you on this one mate.

I had a similar thought of ditching Sanchez (have Ozil) and Vardy for Coutinho and Kane but I resisted. Over the next 3 fixtures, I can't see myself as a non-Sanchez owner. I have a gut feeling it will be one of his explosion phases again.

Mulled over the same trio last week. Ultimately chose Surman based on price (really wanted the 0.1 saving v Gosling) and apparent predictability. Valar makes a fair point below though, re Gosling and Arter being back in the lineup. Good luck 🙂

Surman + Arter make Gosling a good option since he gets to play very advanced.. makes a him a very viable option as a 5th mid as long as both of those two stay fit. Bournemouth are probably one of the unluckiest team in recent memory tbh.. they play really good attacking football.

    0.1m off Pelle > Kane for -4 and Aguero only possible for a -8 (KDB + Pelle > 6.6m + Aguero)

    Kolarov, Bellerin, Evans (Darmian, Bertrand)
    Mahrez, KDB, Sanchez, Mahrez, Ayew
    Vardy, Lukaku (Pelle*)

    Butland (sun) - Myhill (whm)
Bellerin (nor) - Moreno (SWA) - Ward (NEW) - van Dijk (mci) - Francis (EVE)
Sanchez (nor) - Özil (nor) - Firmino (SWA) - Mahrez (mun) - Deulofeu (bou)
