The ScoutCast – Episode 177 – Cathartic

Granville was expected to miss this week’s Scoutcast. Flagged as a 25% doubt, we drafted in Andy off the bench in preparation for our resident Mancunian to go AWOL as he wallowed in the misery of his 30-point Gameweek.

To his great credit, he proved us wrong.

Granville crashes in from the off to join Andy, Jonty and myself in another episode that he describes as “cathartic experience”, as he rolls out the full directors cut of his woeful tale from Gameweek 15.

Spouting such gems as “someone has to be unlucky and it has to be me”, Granville adds an essential ingredient to a packed and lively session.

It’s helped along by Jonty’s endorsement of “playing the percentages”, roughly translated as the “Dullard’s methodology 101”, which has the four of us at loggerheads.

Once the dust settles on that debate, we tackle further questions from the community, featuring Jonty’s latest love letter to Aaron Ramsey, before rounding off with our preview of Gameweek 16.

This episode of the Scoutcast was first aired live via our YouTube channel. To view that full broadcast you can click on the player below.

If you prefer the slightly buffed up audio flavor, you’ll need this link or the smaller player.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for updates on new episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

"Giroud is a striker and it's tiring - he's come in and out this season and that's been good for him. We will have to do it again. They can play together [Giroud and Walcott]. Depends on the balance of the team, it's different when Sanchez is there."

        Exactly.
Ramsey looks better then. And maybe swap one of Özil or Ramsey to Sánchez if one feels like it.

Yep. Also doesn't look like Firmino is nailed on to start this weekend. I'll ship in all likelihood. For Rambo.

It puts me off Gru more than Theo at the min....

Can see Theo playing RW whilst Sanchez is out, and once Sanchez is back, Gru getting his rest and sharing upfront playing time with Theo

Yeah to be honest I don't think anything has changed from what he said.

I didn't read "we will need to do it again" as Giroud will need to be rested soon but at some point. While Sanchez is out I think Walcott is fairly nailed but when he comes back it'll be him or Giroud up front.

Interestingly though before getting injured Walcott played in every game. With Giroud in form perhaps he'll get less time now when Sanchez is back?

    Wenger press conference round-up:

Wenger praised Giroud's performance - "one of his best midweek"

No new injuries following Champions League

Sanchez has the shortest injury - other injured players won't be available until after Christmas

[On Giroud] - you should look at his record, he has special qualities. You want him to be efficient but where he's improved is his link play with others which is important for our team. He always wants to improve and has a positive mentatlity.

[Wilshere] - Won't be available before end of December - "No chance"

On Giroud and Theo - "Giroud is a striker and it's tiring - he's come in and out this season and that's been good for him. We will have to do it again. They can play together [Giroud and Walcott]. Depends on the balance of the team, it's different when Sanchez is there."

Is Giroud still worth the investment do you think? If both him and Walcott are starting surely they will begin to share points?

Both have decent fixtures, Giroud finally becoming nailed and playing well sealed the deal but after Wenger's comments today im a bit iffy.

I lack Spurs attackers though so maybe Kane is the choice

Not sure if he's a bad idea but perhaps a short term one.

It's possibly that when Sanchez comes back Giroud gets a rest and Walcott continues playing....we just don't know.

          • 8 Years

Yes in the short term he's good, but sooner rather than later he goes back to being a rotation risk again. For anyone trying to decide between Ramsey and Walcott, the choice got a bit easier imo.

Got another benching headache this week. Any suggestions?

    DDG (Hennessey)

    Kolarov, Moreno, Monreal (Dier, Zouma)

    KDB, Ozil, Mahrez, Mane (Barkley)

    Ighalo, Vardy, Lukaku

I can't wait to get rid of Mane after all the useless returns he's got me but I'm worried he'll be explosive away to Crystal Palace.

i've had him for a couple of weeks. Don't think he's the problem. He's trying.
Until Willian and Hazard get some help from the forward (s) and other midfielders don't see FPL returns improving. Build-up play is so slow and very little attacking movement with players getting ahead of the ball. Pretty much the same problems as Utd.
He'll get 2 more GWs while I sort out defence & Xmas rotation and if he hasn't returned that'll be it - hopefully for a fit again Sanchez or possibly Ramsay or Coutinho depending on fitness & form.

Did think De Gea in for Begovic, but with Uniteds injuries and the fact I wouldn't be able to do the Ighalo and Kane change without taking hits, so may hold of on that for now. What else you think? I guess the Silva/Ramsey move will be popular but I hoping to wait until after the 2 teams meeting up before doubling up on either teams attacking players again

    Butland
    Kolarov Moreno Alderweild
    Coutinho KDB Mahrez Ozil
    Lukaku Vardy Ighalo

    Begovic Barkley Cresswell Evans

    Cheers again

Sell both Kun & Alexis for a hit or just one of them and who?

Thinking of avoiding 3 Arsenal for now because it eliminates the possibility of a straight KDB to Sanchez if I choose. Coutinho and Ighalo the best bets here?

    DDG/Hennessey
    Bellerin/Moreno/Alde/Dawson/Nyom
    KDB/Ozil/Mahrez/____/Gosling
    Kane/Lukaku/_____

Silva's certainly an option, a favourite of mine. Always been wary of Ramsey, but his stats last week were ridiculous.

coutinho - man city don't look good at the moment plus it kills your cash for the Sanchez upgrade

      Ighalo not Vardy?

It's tight, it could be my reluctance to get Vardy back 2 weeks after ditching on a WC. If I get Vardy back, having got KDB back immediately last week, I basically have my pre-WC team...

Also, slightly worried that Vardy could get a rest, seems to have been put through the mill a bit for the record.

I did Ayew & pelle -------> Aguero & Lanzini 2 weeks ago for a hit, seemed like the right move at the time :/

That's bad, but not as bad as ditching Vardy and KDB! Cost me about 30 points that.

    On WC..

Currently have Ozil + Ramsey + 0.5 itb to do Ramsey -> Coutinho when/if needed..

Or should I just start off with Ozil + Coutinho this week?

    Ighalo 1st sub.

I'd go Ramsey for now - becoming increasingly concerned that Coutinho might see limited minutes again but waiting on Klopp presser.

Guys, do you really put much stock in how plays perform midweek, when considering them for GW transfers?
My gut feeling is that this shouldn't really be considered too much. Team rotation, different tactics, focus on just getting through it alive etc.

Yes, why not? Still contributes to individual and team form.

Obviously less important if it's a capital one cup game and they've played 10 reserve players though.

Ramsay and Coutinho were both not really any good at in their midweek games.
They are both really hot for the XI this weekend.

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

Absolutely. We have limited information in this game so why ignore games that give us ~30% extra information on players in Europe? The key part is to work out how much weight to attribute to cup games in your thinking.

Kane, because Lukaku has an early kick off. Its just psychological thing for me, I would be happy he gets a brace in that first game without captaining him, but if I captain him and he gets nothing then the whole weekend is ruined

    Butland
    Bellerin Toby Moreno
    KdB Ozil(vc) Firmino Deulofeu
    Kane(c) Lukaku Vardy

    McCarthy Rojo Westwood Francis

Doing Firmino -> Ramsey. Looks good? Anything else you would recommend?

-4 in transfers, 0.4 in bank

    Mignolet. Ruddy
    Francis, Sagna, Moreno, Zouma, Targett
    KDB, Coutinho, Eriksen, Arnautovic, Sinclair
    Aguero, Ayoze, Pelle

    A) Aguero out for -8 (xxx)
    B) Ayoze out for -8 (ex: deeney)
    C) wait for next week

Over the Xmas period is it worth upgrading a 5th mid like Gosling to Coutinho (provided he is fit) in order to have 8 playable attackers? After Kun got injured i seem to have a lot in the bank, unless Kun is a viable option over Xmas

I've gone down that route and did the same last year (worked quite well). The games are more spaced out this Christmas though so there may be less rotation than usual.

Its a nice option to have though, albeit a benching headache. Rather that then having a guaranteed 2 points off the bench
