Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 16

Liverpool’s fit-again captain makes an instant impact on his first league start under Jurgen Klopp. Bournemouth claim another big scalp by seeing off United at Dean Court, whilst Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to bench Kevin de Bruyne and Aleksandar Kolarov gives us an early heads-up on festive rotation.

The Player

A goal and assist in his first league start under Jurgen Klopp immediately brought Jordan Henderson back onto Fantasy managers’ radars.

Sidelined since sustaining a foot injury in Gameweek 2, the Reds skipper was afforded a brief second-half sub appearance against Swansea in Gameweek 14 before Klopp named him in his first XI for the weekend visit of West Brom.

With maximum bonus also accrued against the Baggies, Henderson racked up 13 points to quickly serve a reminder of his six goals and ten assists in the 2014/15 campaign. Having dropped from 7.0 to 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, it may be time to start considering him again.

Crucially for Klopp, his captain’s high-energy style of play looks a perfect match for his gegenpressing approach and a fully-fit Henderson – like he was under Rodgers – will surely be immune to rotation in the centre of the park.

Certainly, the midfielder’s showing against Tony Pulis’ side bodes well for his Fantasy potential under the new manager. Although there’s a chance that the German may ration Henderson’s Christmas minutes as a result of his stint on the sidelines, clashes against Watford, Leicester, Sunderland and West Ham could afford him the platform to push on from that Baggies’ display and finally find himself back into our plans.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over Man United helped Bournemouth climb two points clear of the drop zone as Eddie Howe’s side showed their Gameweek 15 triumph at Stamford Bridge was no fluke.

The Cherries’ heroes of the day, Junior Stanislas and Joshua King, are clearly thriving in Howe’s new-look set-up and their recent hauls have proved worthy of starting roles in our XIs. The former has chipped in with three goals and an assist in the last four, whilst King’s role as the lone striker has helped him produce two goals and an assist across the same period.

Although Stanislas (4.2) and King (4.6) have emerged as the choice routes into Howe’s attack, both Dan Gosling and Matt Ritchie have shown plenty of goal threat since the return of Harry Arter in Gameweek 11. Indeed, Gosling, Ritchie, Stanislas and King have all produced 16 attempts on goal apiece in the last six matches, underlining their points potential.

If King can shrug off a hamstring problem sustained against United, Howe’s side will have every reason for optimism heading into the busy festive period. The last two results have clearly shown they are more than capable of upsetting any opponent and with home clashes against the likes of Palace, West Ham and Norwich in the next six, could continue to offer excellent value for money.

The Talking Point

After watching his side lose to Stoke in the previous Gameweek, Manuel Pellegrini put the blame firmly down to fatigue. With so many injuries to contend with, the City boss was unable to rest and rotate with regularity and instead relied heavily on a small core of players over the past few months.

On Saturday, Pellegrini finally took action. With the likes of Gael Clichy and David Silva fully fit, the Chilean dropped Aleksandar Kolarov and Kevin de Bruyne to the bench for the visit of managerless Swansea after both had started the midweek win over Borussia Monchengladbach. As City huffed and puffed to a late 2-1 win, De Bruyne owners were left with a one-point second-half cameo, whilst Kolarov warmed the bench from start to finish.

Given that next Monday’s match at Arsenal is the first of eight fixtures in 26 days for City, we’ll have to prepare for more of the same. It remains to be seen just how often Sergio Aguero will feature, then, whilst the Gunners’ recent results will perhaps persuade Arsene Wenger to court caution with the fitness of Alexis Sanchez.

Pellegrini’s team sheet served a timely reminder of the need for strong benches at this time of year. Come the festive period, our squads are subject to the rotational whims of top-flight managers more than any other point in the season as the fixtures arrive thick and fast.

As the schedule picks up pace, there’s also potential suspensions to consider and plan around. Jamie Vardy – owned by over 56% FPL managers – now sits just one caution short of a single-match ban after earning his fourth yellow of the season last night. Should he be booked in any of the next three league fixtures before the limit is extended to ten yellows on New Year’s Day, he’ll topple off the Tightrope.

Fortunately, the absence of both Aguero and Sanchez has, for once, come in handy, with plenty of cash subsequently freed up just as the schedule picks up pace.

Their injuries, allied with the raft of value options on offer, means that this year, arguably more than ever, Fantasy managers are well-positioned to strengthen our squads and back-up options, allowing us to plan for these worst-case scenarios in order to navigate the tricky Christmas period.

It's a bit ridiculous. At this rate he'll smash the premiership record so you'd expect him to slow down at some point.

Got your table yesterday for mids to replace Barkley with (piggin hate him). I've no doubt that Eriksen will be a better pick than Bolasie but i want to go down in value and not up. That will afford me Aguero when he's firing and Smalling when he returns for duty...and Baines...

So it's Either Bolasie or a Bournemouth mid.

I'm currently considering breaking my principles on 5th mids to bring in Bolasie for Westwood. Reasons being:

    1) Christmas rotation
    2) Vardy 4YC, don't want to sell if suspended one week
    3) KDB giving birth
    4) Want Aguero next week, but then see 1)
    5) Money genuinely no issue

But before I go ahead and get myself into this benching headache mess, I just want to know how everyone that is rolling with front eights rather than front sevens has been doing this season and in recent weeks especially? Do you generally get it right or wrong? What rules do I have to follow other than to never bench Mahrez?

I think this is exactly what i'm doing. Very similar team with mine looking like this:

      DDG / Mccarthy

      Kolarov / Bellerin / Moreno / Richards / Francis

      Silva / Hazard / Manae / Mahrezx / Westwood

      Kane / Lukaku / Giroud

Guy in work just said "this is such depressing rubbish, where's the musical talent?" when There Is a Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths was on, but shouted "TUNE!" when he changed the station and Justin Bieber was on. I despair.

Took the chance of benching Vardy last night after the improved showing of the Chelsea defence of late. No regrets...somewhere down the line a risky not pick can work out. Not this time though.

Mahrez (c) in UFPL did me some good though.

I've made big mistakes having a good top 8 players.

Put Mahrez on the bench and he gets a hattrick
Put Vardy this week on the bench and he scores and gets bonus

Won't be making that mistake again.

This week, i've updated my goalie to Butland and taken out Galloway for Wollschield.

    My team consists of

    Butland - Myhill
    Arlderwierald - smalling - kolorvo - Wollschield - Simpson
    Eriksen - Mahrez - Barkley - Ozil - Silva
    Kane - Vardy - Lukaku

Poch has said that Kane will be getting some rest in the next few gameweeks to keep him fresh for next year. Seeing him play against Newcastle, he looked tired and didnt have much luck in front of goal.

Will take out for Aguero and sell Eriksen for a cheap mid like stanislav. That will ensure i dont have a bench dilema again. Aguero as captain every gameweek

I don't agree with any of these replies. Chelsea have extremely good defensive stats over the last 4 weeks. Conceded 2 goals in four games before last night and it's not exactly a huge surprise that they failed to keep out the league's best attack. Their next opponents aren't in that category: SUN, WAT, mun, cpl, WBA, EVE so clean sheets ought to be good, plus defenders will be getting the bonus in low-scoring games.

I'd go Zouma, who appears to be nailed on. Chelsea's biggest problem is attacking, which means Ivan isn't worth his premium.

Do we reckon I have the right defenders + keeper starting? Last time asking this I promise 🙂

So you all think Stoke- Palace is going to end 0-0? I would try it with at least one WBA player (evans instead of Dann probably).

Not sure. I'm thinking 1-0 palace in all fairness but Stoke have been really solid. Evans instead of Dann is worth a shout though, thanks

With Mahrez, Vardy, Ighalo performing so well, big hitters can easily be fit in. Why are people thinking of a front 8 different to this:

    Sanchez, KDB, Ozil, Mahrez, 4.5
    Aguero, Lukaku, Vardy

All this talk of Wijanldum, Ramsey, Henderson etc seems pointless. Ok the big hitters haven't performed brillaintly over the first half of the season but we still expect them to outscore the others from now till the end

Not even a little bit. It isn't how many points they have at the end of the season, it's how many points they've got you over a period.

Owning Ighalo over Aguero so far has been an absolute gem, regardless if Aguero outscores him at the end. You make the change when you fill like the boat will start to turn.

I mean from now we expect Aguero + Sanchez to outperform the others

I wouldn't even think about swapping Lukaku or Ighalo for Aguero at the moment, even if he is fit. Once he starts performing well then I'll think about it - just because it's Aguero it doesn't guarantee he'll out score others especially in the short term future

Fair enough. I would rather have him over any of those when fit

I likewise disagree here. I will choose Aguero when he is actually in form, and one freak 25 point week does not do that. I've had both Vardy and Ighalo in a 4-3-3 for months and their point-scoring consistency is the only thing that matters. Once they wane and Aguero actually hits form, I'll make the change, but not before.

If both play this week, they should be fit and firing pretty soon

Sure, but what I'm saying is: I wouldn't change players who definitely are scoring points, for players we want to start scoring points. I prefer to follow form rather than pre-empt it.

I agree. I'm trying to say that saving a transfer now rather than using it on a short term punt will help getting to this over next few weeks when likely Sanchez + Aguero are firing

Not sure why I would want either of those. Those who went for a killer defence instead did it right.

That worked out just because Sanchez and Aguero underperformed. Chances are they will outscore a killer defence in 2nd half of the season

When Aguero and Sanchez are fully fit (they're not) that would be a great front 8

I don't consider Ramsey in that category. In that position, he is a reliable big hitter.

Yes that is the best possible front 8 imo

I have Barkley who happily will become Sanchez but Ighalo needs a big drop in form for me to get Aguero.

What's the dealio with KDB. Just rotated? Should we be looking to get rid? Chances are he'll make way for Aguero cash in a few weeks anyway

      Great work, Wakey!

Out of interest, have you been using loans much? I've got so many injuries that they seem unavoidable, but even when they're successful the best I manage is breaking even on them and treading water in the ranks.

All the time. My squad is actually a bit rubbish. Make sure you only loan in players that dovetail nicely for sub ins. Not just the best form or fixtures. The likes of Cabaye and Wijnaldum are gold....
