Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 16

Liverpool’s fit-again captain makes an instant impact on his first league start under Jurgen Klopp. Bournemouth claim another big scalp by seeing off United at Dean Court, whilst Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to bench Kevin de Bruyne and Aleksandar Kolarov gives us an early heads-up on festive rotation.

The Player

A goal and assist in his first league start under Jurgen Klopp immediately brought Jordan Henderson back onto Fantasy managers’ radars.

Sidelined since sustaining a foot injury in Gameweek 2, the Reds skipper was afforded a brief second-half sub appearance against Swansea in Gameweek 14 before Klopp named him in his first XI for the weekend visit of West Brom.

With maximum bonus also accrued against the Baggies, Henderson racked up 13 points to quickly serve a reminder of his six goals and ten assists in the 2014/15 campaign. Having dropped from 7.0 to 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, it may be time to start considering him again.

Crucially for Klopp, his captain’s high-energy style of play looks a perfect match for his gegenpressing approach and a fully-fit Henderson – like he was under Rodgers – will surely be immune to rotation in the centre of the park.

Certainly, the midfielder’s showing against Tony Pulis’ side bodes well for his Fantasy potential under the new manager. Although there’s a chance that the German may ration Henderson’s Christmas minutes as a result of his stint on the sidelines, clashes against Watford, Leicester, Sunderland and West Ham could afford him the platform to push on from that Baggies’ display and finally find himself back into our plans.

The Team

A 2-1 home win over Man United helped Bournemouth climb two points clear of the drop zone as Eddie Howe’s side showed their Gameweek 15 triumph at Stamford Bridge was no fluke.

The Cherries’ heroes of the day, Junior Stanislas and Joshua King, are clearly thriving in Howe’s new-look set-up and their recent hauls have proved worthy of starting roles in our XIs. The former has chipped in with three goals and an assist in the last four, whilst King’s role as the lone striker has helped him produce two goals and an assist across the same period.

Although Stanislas (4.2) and King (4.6) have emerged as the choice routes into Howe’s attack, both Dan Gosling and Matt Ritchie have shown plenty of goal threat since the return of Harry Arter in Gameweek 11. Indeed, Gosling, Ritchie, Stanislas and King have all produced 16 attempts on goal apiece in the last six matches, underlining their points potential.

If King can shrug off a hamstring problem sustained against United, Howe’s side will have every reason for optimism heading into the busy festive period. The last two results have clearly shown they are more than capable of upsetting any opponent and with home clashes against the likes of Palace, West Ham and Norwich in the next six, could continue to offer excellent value for money.

The Talking Point

After watching his side lose to Stoke in the previous Gameweek, Manuel Pellegrini put the blame firmly down to fatigue. With so many injuries to contend with, the City boss was unable to rest and rotate with regularity and instead relied heavily on a small core of players over the past few months.

On Saturday, Pellegrini finally took action. With the likes of Gael Clichy and David Silva fully fit, the Chilean dropped Aleksandar Kolarov and Kevin de Bruyne to the bench for the visit of managerless Swansea after both had started the midweek win over Borussia Monchengladbach. As City huffed and puffed to a late 2-1 win, De Bruyne owners were left with a one-point second-half cameo, whilst Kolarov warmed the bench from start to finish.

Given that next Monday’s match at Arsenal is the first of eight fixtures in 26 days for City, we’ll have to prepare for more of the same. It remains to be seen just how often Sergio Aguero will feature, then, whilst the Gunners’ recent results will perhaps persuade Arsene Wenger to court caution with the fitness of Alexis Sanchez.

Pellegrini’s team sheet served a timely reminder of the need for strong benches at this time of year. Come the festive period, our squads are subject to the rotational whims of top-flight managers more than any other point in the season as the fixtures arrive thick and fast.

As the schedule picks up pace, there’s also potential suspensions to consider and plan around. Jamie Vardy – owned by over 56% FPL managers – now sits just one caution short of a single-match ban after earning his fourth yellow of the season last night. Should he be booked in any of the next three league fixtures before the limit is extended to ten yellows on New Year’s Day, he’ll topple off the Tightrope.

Fortunately, the absence of both Aguero and Sanchez has, for once, come in handy, with plenty of cash subsequently freed up just as the schedule picks up pace.

Their injuries, allied with the raft of value options on offer, means that this year, arguably more than ever, Fantasy managers are well-positioned to strengthen our squads and back-up options, allowing us to plan for these worst-case scenarios in order to navigate the tricky Christmas period.

Having seen a few people suggesting Wijnaldum is a great choice. I have looked at his stats and can someone please point out what i am missing?

His next five fixtures are AVL, EVE, wba, ars, MUN. To me, AVL is a plum tie and EVE is ok. The next three i wouldn't consider good for newcastle so this seems to be a two week gamble.

Looking at Newcastle's team stats for goal attempts for the last four weeks puts them near the bottom:
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team-stats/goal-threat/

Considering home matches only then things don’t improve and going further, looking at only the last two matches only gets even worse...

My conclusion from this is Newcastle are not a consistent attacking threat. Any upturn in form has been solely from defending resolutely and hitting on the break (getting lucky?).

Taking a look at some of Doosras tables, there seem to be a lot of other mids who have better stats: Bolasie, Siggy, coutinho, Stanislas, Yaya, Cabaye, Ramsey (amusingly, wijnaldum doesn't even make it onto this list at all..)

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/1373/

In terms of set pieces, he doesn't take pens and shares free kicks with Colback and De Jong so this doesn't provide a clear source of points.

So, as far as i can see, he hasn't shown any noticeable form and medium term, his fixtures are not the greatestso why the love?

Not meant as a criticism but genuinely interested in why others think Wijnaldum is a great choice?

He's a 2 week punt as he does far better at home and is welcoming two extremely leaky sides to St. James' Park in the next 2 weeks. Plus it might end up nicely timing in with Payet/Sanchez returns.

he's better but is he that much better?

Necastle are still right down the bottom for goal threat at home:
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team-stats/goal-threat/

Wijnaldum improves at home but an average of a shot a game isn't exactly great?
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comparison/players/

I get the two week punt idea while holding for Payet/Sanchez but just don't see the attraction of wijnaldum. Sadly, this is written as a Newcastle fan 🙁

I think that that's due to Newcastle as a team being extremely dodgy when it comes to form (hence why they're so low down in the table)..

BUT, whenever they DO do well at home, Wij is normally at the epicenter. It doesn't reflect much in any of his stats other than goal involvement and his actual tally..

8ppg at home though (albeit with an outlier, although just because it's an outlier doesn't mean it's worth disregarding, Villa could be Norwich 2.0)

Stats aren't the be all end all either, I brought in Firmino before City and he got 15 points, he wasn't on a single stat table before that week.

Agreed and I'm not saying he won't score necessarily but do we not try and use stats to give us an indication of underlying performances and the likelihood of it happening?

I agree that if newcastle do well, wijnaldum is likely to be involved but I'm really not convinced they have turned a corner yet. Going on the front foot against an away team is different to sitting in against a bigger side.

Be interesting to watch anyway and good luck with your punt 🙂

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I'm not an anti-stat man and I pay my membership to gain access to those stats, but sometimes there are outside factors at play that don't show up in the stats tables..

For example, two of the worst teams in the league defensively (and Aston Villa probably being THE worst team in the league, worse than Norwich) playing at your home stadium...

But the entire drive behind the punt was for after the City game 😉 You got Sturridge too, right?!

At least Wijnaldum has shown some basis for consideration, though very inconsistent returns wise, but I can appreciate it. I wanted to have you sent to a looney bin for the Firmino one as it appeared to be plucked from thin air.

    A) Hazard to Mahrez
    B) Hazard to Wijnaldum
    C) Hazard and Hoolahan to Mahrez and Wijnaldum (-4) would also cause a benching headache (KDB likely to be benched).

Ramsey's form has nothing to do with Sanchez not playing. Its purely the fact that he's playing in his preferred/best role, and that is due to Cazorla being out.

I am having a decent season so far, but I have made a couple of bad transfers recently, and I don't think my team is in good shape at all going into the difficult winter period.

    Team currently looks like.

    Butland, Ruddy,
    Bellerin, Moreno, Dawson, Nyom, Huth,
Hazard*, de Bruyne, Mahrez, Bolasie, Westwood*,
    Lukaku, Kane, Vardy.

£5.1m in bank, but don't think I am sure about spending the so-called Aguero money I have kept in my account for so long. Won't be unhappy to take a hit this week.

    What would you suggest?

I fancy Ayew. Siggy, not so much.

I have Ayew, and I was looking to get rid. He may not be bad as a fourth choice but plenty of players in the same price bracket look more appealing right now (i.e. Henderson, Bolasie). The new manager may change that though.

Willian to Ramsey this week and then Ozil to Sanchez when the Chilean plays his first game back.

I'm thinking with Ramsey and Sanchez, it wouldn't be too bad missing those Ozil assist points.

    What do you think ?

Those Ozil assist points add up

yeah but if he is going to assist Ramsey and Sanchez and he will, then Goals points add up too.

Id go Ozil and Sanchez. But depends on your team value and what you can do with that extra cash having Ramsey over Ozil

I see the 'kill your rank by committee' ethos is still going ever strong.10,000s of teams blocking up the mid 50ks like a giant impacted stool, or, "The Scout Effect".

      Eh? The ranks stated above: 54k, 32k, 85k, 38k, 4k, 190k, 100k, 750k, 27k, 1.15m, 700k, 77k, 5k, 19k and 11k.

Also, how do 10,000s of teams block "the mid-50ks"? May as well say hundreds of teams are in the top 10.

I feel like people who are still banging on about getting Zouma, or some other Chelsea two-bob wastrel are just waiting to scream 'I TOLD YOU SO' when they eventually bring home any points of note.

      It is insanity.

I question how advanced humans are compared to chimps.

A chimp can use basic tools to crack open nuts where as a human is sat watching Chelseas pathetic team for the last few months thinking "zouma! Bargain! Must captain Hazard!"

I'm travelling to Barca to watch vs Arsenal game at Camp Nou, where should I buy the tickets from? Don't think I can get any good seats from the official site when its open as it's for member first only.

And for those who knew, when's the best time to buy it? Don't wanna to get it too close to date as it's risky that it runs out.. Is now during release a good time? Or wait for a while and it drops?

    Thanks
