Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 19

Chelsea were without a trio of injured players for yesterday’s trip to United. Everton have worries in the centre of the park, Mousa Dembele is doubtful again for Spurs, whilst West Ham are hopeful on a weekend return for Dimitri Payet. Here’s the latest from yesterday’s matches..

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed the Gunners win over Bournemouth with a minor ankle problem, according to Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal boss also played down Kieran Gibbs’ late withdrawal:

“He [Flamini] might be alright. I could have pushed him but he was a little risk so I decided not to take it because it was an inflamed ankle.”

Aston Villa
Remi Garde was without Jores Okore for the trip to Norwich due to a knee problem:

“His knee was injured. I don’t know how serious. As the game took place very soon after the last one, he had a swollen knee and couldn’t play.”

Chelsea
Gary Cahill missed the trip to United with a foot problem, Guus Hiddink has confirmed, whilst Cesc Fabregas was sidelined due to illness. Loic Remy was unavailable due to a calf complaint.

Crystal Palace
Damien Delaney missed the Eagles’ clash with Swansea after picking up a knock in the weekend draw at Bournemouth.

Everton
James McCarthy returned to action from a groin problem but lasted less than half an hour before suffering a recurrence of the injury. Roberto Martinez has further concerns in the centre of the park after McCarthy’s replacement, Tom Cleverley, was also forced off:

“To lose Tom Cleverley through injury and to get a reaction, a flare up from James McCarthy is a real negative. It was a blow to lose James so early. We felt we needed an extra energy and you saw that with his impact in with the assist for the first goal. Tom then felt his Achilles tendon and we will have to assess it. He tried to stay on as long as he could. He played the pass for Romelu Lukaku for the second goal but he had to come off. He made a really big impact when he came on and he was playing a massive role.”

Newcastle
Steve McClaren was forced to make a last-minute change to his XI for yesterday’s trip to West Brom after Rob Elliot dropped to the bench due to illness. Vurnon Anita was replaced late on after sustaining a hamstring injury, with McClaren fearing the problem is “a bad one”.

Swansea
Federico Fernandez (foot) and Wayne Routledge (knock) were both unavailable for the Swans’ trip to Selhurst Park yesterday.

Tottenham
Mousa Dembele was withdrawn just before the break against Watford yesterday due to a recurrence of his ongoing ankle problem. After the 2-1 win, Mauricio Pochettino went on to say:

“We need to wait and assess him tomorrow. We hope it’s not too bad. Maybe one week, two weeks.”

West Brom
Victor Anichebe was forced off with a hamstring problem late on during the Baggies home win over Newcastle. Jonas Olsson was withdrawn during the first half with a similar complaint, though Tony Pulis remains optimistic on the duo ahead of the weekend derby with Stoke:

“Vic is a top player. He showed that today. They just couldn’t handle him and he did very well. Fingers crossed he and Jonas will be ok for the Stoke game – it’s been suggested that it might just be cramp. Hopefully it won’t be any more.”

West Ham
Nikica Jelavic was sidelined for yesterday’s win over Southampton with a knee injury. Enner Valencia was forced off with a knee problem late on and James Collins picked up an ankle knock but chairman David Gold expects both to make the weekend clash with Liverpool.

In further positive news, Gold says he is “hopeful” that Dimitri Payet could play some part against the Merseysiders this weekend.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yep, hands down, currently at 1m. My rival in his first ever season is at 42k! About 140 ahead.

He has Vardy, Smalling and Kolarov on his bench this week!!!

He has used all chips though, so there's still hope IF I can claw back 5 points week or so then get a bi week on a DGW...

In response to Andy's hot topic thread on "Best defender for the next four" I think that Manchester United West Brom, and possibly Bournemouth are probably the best. At first glance, the fixtures look meh, but let's take a closer look.

Man United (SWA, new, liv, SOT)
    - Swansea struggling to score and I can't see them getting a striker in by the 2nd to try and correct this. They have scored 1 goal in their last 4 away matches. Might be the last easy clean sheet we see against the Swans before they strengthen in the window.
    - Newcastle, likewise, are struggling to score against team recently. Though they had two good wins against Liverpool and Tottenham, their attacking threat has dropped off in the last few games (1-1 AVL, 0-1 EVE, WBA 1-0)
    - Anything goes really in this game, but we've yet to see consistent attack threat from Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp in the league. Could be a 0-0, could be a 3-3 depending what sides show up.
    - Southampton can always be a tricky fixtures for teams. However, United remain the best side defensively at home this season and could nullify the inconsistent Southampton side.

Candidates: De Gea (5.6m), Smalling (6.8m), Darmian (5.4m)

West Brom (STO, che, sot, AVL)
    - On paper the first fixture looks tough when we consider the form of Stoke, but in truth these are the type of games that the Pulis effect kicks in and show defensive resolve. I would be wary of bringing in players like Arnautovic and Shaqiri for this came personally.
    - Chelsea as always are an enigma this season, and we've yet to see a significant goal threat from them against the defensively better teams. Doubtful for a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge, but stranger things have happened.
    - Again, like Chelsea away, this is a tough fixture but between the two away games we might be surprised with a clean sheet from one of them.
    - I think AVL is the fixture we all look for recently as the relegation contenders look short of ideas. I would expect a clean sheet here, but given it is a derby match, anything could happen in terms of cards, so be wary.

    Candidates: Dawson (5.1m), McAuley (5.0m), Evans (4.8m)

    Bournemouth (lei, WHM, NOR, sun)
    - We know Bournemouth have the ability to shut up shop against teams and get give good defensive displays, but to rely on their clean sheet prospects along is a big ask. For this reason I think Charlie Daniels at 4.5m is a great prospect.
    - Daniels is cheap, on penalties, gets forward a lot and seems to benefit from the BPS recently.
    - When we look at the teams that have the most penalties conceded this season, Norwich and Sunderland top the table with 5, with West Ham in 6th place with 3 penalties conceded.

    Candidates: Daniels (4.5m)

Yes but for the next 4 specifically, Liverpool and City are a big turn off.

The other three are fairly nice though in fairness, for a 4.5m defender these are the best fixtures Bournemouth will get in a long time. Two home games against teams with the highest amount of penalties conceded this season

Would have to be Darmian at this point I think. 6.8m for Smalling is too much I think. I got him at 6.4 and even that was pushing it.

Only problem with Darmian is he's not completely nailed.

Yes I know all this Andy, and yesterday goes towards that stat. Which is why i am really considering them, even though I just got rid of Darmian.
I was just mentioning what I saw yesterday. Schneiderlin in the team and DDG still having to keep them in the game.

How does 52 with 4 to go compare around these parts? Average enough?

Big game, fully rested - we'd expect him to start

Bony on form, good result from the team last match - not broke, don't fix it

Man City go top with a win so I would expect Kun to start personally...

Is a 60 points deficit recoverable from here on in ?

The lad who is leading in ML hardly ever commits a mistake and also always captains the poll leader of FFS.

Very hard to make ground, in fact I lost ground over him this week by captaining Ramsey instead of Ozil because I knew he would captain Ozil. This has been story pretty much all season till.

    What should I do ?

Last year I myself was leading by 150 points in ML on January, then ultimately won it by a slender margin of 2 points by GW38.

But that was largely because I made some very bad mistakes during the second half, thinking I'll win my ML anyway, so went a bit punty chasing good OR.

But this lad looks so very composed, dont think he'll commit any mistake by himself.

Fixture smixture, how are you reading them? Isnt it almost enough to check who has Sunderland or Aston Villa and try to have someone playing against them (and captain). OK, a joke but still...

Apparently Villa gave it a good go yesterday but their usual woeful defending did them in.

That said, surely even the most rose tinted Villa fan knows they're all but officially relegated now. The Norwich defeat may have been the dagger in the heart that stops the players from trying from now on.

As one Villa fan said after the Norwich defeat the only thing Villa have left to try for this season is to beat Derby's 11 points.

Sunderland probably still have a few upset results in them but even Allardyce doesn't appear to have been able to stop what seems to be an inevitable slide to the Championship.
