Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

Already have luk and kane. Ighalo ahead of him?! If funds were needed elsewhere then I could consider it but lack of premium MFs performing means we can splash out on strikers

For me yes. His fixtures have turned again now and Sanchez will be back soon. Gives you Sanchez, KDB and Payet plus funds for a strong defence. Why gamble on Costa when Ighalo has form and fixtures

But he doesn't have form of late and Costa does. Gives u am ample captain this week too. By the time Sanchez is back it gives us plenty time to reassess.

Leicester have by far the most penalties awarded to them this season and it's not by fluke. Man city's defence tightened up even without kompany. I don't see lukaku doing much away to them

So back to work tomorrow and out of the FF cup to a United fan - what a particularly depressing Sunday! I really need some new hobbies.

Finished on 34 with Alli, Evans and Bennett sat on my bench. Changed my captain from Aguero at the last minute too. Toby’s 3 bonus points mean my cup opponent finishes on the same as me and from what I understand about the rules I think I’m out.

Much like my FF career it could have all been so different. At this rate I’m in danger of slipping out of the top million which is a low point. There’s only so long before I’ll be replaced by LVG.

I have a few queries I’d appreciate people’s thoughts on?

I currently have Silva - does anyone else own him and if so are they keeping? He usually does well with Aguero in the side but going forward would folk rather have him or Yaya (who rises tonight)?
I think I am the only person who doesn’t have Lukaku, which probably explains my current rank. I feel I’ve long missed that boat, but I’ve been saying that for weeks and it continues to cost me. I currently have Aguero, Vardy and Kane. What are people’s thoughts on Vardy to Costa to try and mix things up a bit? Mistakenly believing that Chelsea have turned a corner has cost me a lot this season, but I need to do something and these are desperate times. I’ve spent weeks feeling fairly happy with my team, though watching it steadily falling further and further behind, and rather than worrying about knee jerking, I’m now mostly concerned about rigor mortis setting in.

Current team is Courtois (Hennessey); Kolarov, Johnson / Moreno / Evans, (R Bennett); Silva, Coutinho, Ozil, Mahrez, (Alli); Aguero, Kane, Vardy

I have 2 free transfers and 0.8 to spend. Am toying with swapping Kolarov, Silva, Coutinho and Vardy for Williams, Yaya, Payet and Costa - though probably not all in one go.

Any comments welcome - though whoever it was who advised me against bringing Barkley in back at the start of the season, stay clear!

    Cheers!

The Flavor of the week effect really has been in full swing for the past few gameweeks. Just six days ago there was a huge Arniewagon going on now he's almost a forgotten man only his good fixture Norwich at home saves him from total FPL oblivion. Surprisingly the flavor of the week is a player yet to start a game after a serious injury well maybe it's not that surprising when you consider the recent history and the case with Aguero.

From here we get to the matter that of the Sturridge syndrome. Which happens when injured players come back and people have enormous faith in returning players to save them from their faltering season. The aforementioned Aguero the most recent example when people got him in and put the armband straight on expecting him to deliver, he didn't as he was badly out of form and unfit. The following gameweek he didn't even feature and that no-show was again followed by an other blank which resulted in some people already losing faith in the brilliant Argentine striker who sadly just wasn't ready to perform for those hopeful captainers.

Now is arguably the best time to get Aguero as he seems to be finding his fitness and form. Will the same happen with Payet who knows but why is there this huge urge to be ahead of the curve? When does that actually work in consistent basis? Isn't it really just better to wait until someone shows form before jumping on board?

And now on top of all people are throwing Mahrez out of their teams for blanking three times in a row. How spoilt can we get?

I think it's the desperation of us 'experienced' managers to get ahead of the curve by bringing in these players and break the template. It's so difficult to rise in ranks cause everyone practically has the same team that is performing week in and out.

      1. il Brutto
        • 10 Years

I get that but I just feel patience is the key here. It's so difficult to make huge jumps in one week without huge risks that will most likely end in tears. There is also the factor of fresh Wildcards in play and I'm pretty sure there will be plenty in front of me who won't use it smartly.

I think 3.2m is my worst EVER gameweek ranking in six seasons. Still, I picked the perfect week to get it. Even the chasers in my leagues only managed to gain a few points on me, even with my crap score of 28.

Yep, it's the best week to have a stinker. 🙂
