Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 20

Diego Costa showcases his goal-getting capabilities as Chelsea sweep aside Palace. West Ham look in form as the schedule smiles kindly, whilst the time now may be right to swoop for Sergio Aguero.

The Player

Having served a one-match suspension away to United in the previous Gameweek, Diego Costa’s return to action saw Chelsea turn on the style with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Palace.

The Spain international’s goal and assist at Selhurst Park was supplemented by a single bonus point as the champions’ recovery under Guus Hiddink picks up pace. Whilst Eden Hazard’s toils continue, Costa, in particular, seems to be reinvigorated since the departure of Jose Mourinho – it’s now three goals and an assist in his last two league outings with Hiddink at the helm, having bagged a brace against Watford prior to his ban.

Given that he managed just three goals and two assists in the first 16 Gameweeks with Mourinho in charge, Costa’s transformation serves a timely reminder of the talent that saw him find the net on 20 occasions during the Blues’ title-winning 2014/15 campaign.

Encouragingly for Chelsea, they have now scored at least twice in three of their four matches since Mourinho was handed his P45. By comparison, they failed to notch more than once in any of their final seven league matches prior to the turnaround in manager.

Costa’s penchant for picking up bookings continues to remain a concern but there’s no doubt he has looked a different player in recent weeks. Although Sergio Aguero is likely to remain the number one premium-priced frontman for Fantasy managers, Costa’s showings under Hiddink suggest we could have a major differential on our hands. Owned by less than 6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, he now embarks on four home fixtures in six (WBA, EVE, MUN, NEW) which offers the champions the chance to continue their climb up the table as Hiddink attempts to salvage their disastrous title defence.

The Team

A 2-0 win over Liverpool extended West Ham’s unbeaten run to seven league matches as Slaven Bilic’s men climbed to sixth in the table, just four points off the Champions League spots.

At the back, the Upton Park outfit chalked up a fourth clean sheet in six – with just two goals conceded over that period, their upturn in resilience has been marked. Bilic’s decision to recall Angelo Ogbonna in Gameweek 14 and shift James Tomkins to right-back has been pivotal to their improvement and, at 4.8 and 5.0 respectively, both offer cheaper alternatives to the 5.5-priced Aaron Cresswell, who climbed to seventh in the defender standings after earning maximum bonus on Saturday.

Dimitri Payet’s weekend return from injury has made a significant impact on Fantasy games. Handed a 27-minute run-out off the bench, the Frenchman has been drafted in by over 63,000 FPL managers and has leaped in price from 7.6 to 7.7. Having averaged 6.2 points per appearance prior to his injury, Payet’s availability will allow the Hammers to play more expansively in the final third once again after Bilic tightened up his tactics in the playmaker’s absence. Whilst uncertainty still surrounds Bilic’s plans up top, Michail Antonio’s recent displays on the flank may well cement a regular role for the summer signing from Forest. At just 5.2 in FPL, Antonio’s goal against Liverpool means he’s now played a part in four of his side’s five strikes (two goals, a pair of assists) since being handed a first start in Gameweek 16.

The upcoming schedule also bodes well for the Upton Park outfit. Given that Bilic’s side now square up to six of the bottom eight in the next seven Gameweeks (bou, new, MCI, AVL, sou, nor, SUN), you’d expect them to cement that top six place, offering points potential at both ends of the pitch.

The Talking Point

Having proven his fitness by lasting 85 minutes in the weekend win over Watford, Sergio Aguero looks to finally be back on the radar.

The Argentine has been tentatively eased back into action by Manuel Pellegrini, with his pitch time at Vicarage Road representing the first occasion he’s lasted more than 60-odd minutes since recovering from injury. Aguero’s late winner against Quique Sanchez Flores’ side, supplemented by the maximum bonus, bodes well for his momentum over the second half of the season.

Aguero’s return to scoring ways arrives at a time when Jamie Vardy is struggling for form and fitness. The Leicester frontman has netted once in his last six now and is set to undergo minor groin surgery, making him a doubt for the Gameweek 21 trip to Tottenham. Bearing in mind that the Foxes have drawn blanks in their last three, there’s no real surprise to see Vardy has earned over 116,000 transfers out this week – substantially more than any other player in FPL.

Whilst his 13.1 price tag is regarded as too prohibitive by some, the emergence of a number of value options in the centre of the park makes the transition far smoother. The recent form of players such as Dele Alli (5.4), Marko Arnautovic (6.7) and Willian (7.1), allied with the aforementioned Payet’s return to the fold, affords us the chance to downgrade in the centre of the park to free up cash for Aguero. With four home matches (EVE, CPL, LEI, TOT) coupled with trips to West Ham and Sunderland in the next six, many may feel that now is the time to accommodate the Argentine as City look to chase down Arsenal at the summit.

    Those with Alli...is he your 4th mid or 5th mid?

    If 5th, is it safe to assume Mahrez is your 4th?

      Mahrez and Alli making strong cases to be third and fourth mids with a sub 5.0 fifth mid as bench fodder to allow for Kun.

      Ignore their prices; those two are performing as if they were 9.5 and 8.0

        Agree that they are making strong cases for 4th and 3rd mids...but wow then would have to choose 2 from Sanchez/Ozil/KDB/Payet/Yaya/Willian. Tough choice there.

      I had 2FTs so I did Ramsey -> Payet.

      Now waiting on Kun's fitness confirmation (and maybe a goal midweek) before I get rid of Kane.

      Alli doesn't really suit my team structure... I'd have to sell Mahrez or Arnie for him and I want to ship neither this week. Stanislas might lose his place to new transfers (iturbe).

      Who are your other strikers? Lukaku and...?

    How about this for -4:

    Kolarov + Ramsey + Vardy ---> Dier + 4.6m MID + Aguero

    This gives me:
    -Better defensive fixtures and a more nailed on defence
    -Takes away my weekly benching dilemma
    -Allows me to keep KDB instead of Ramsey
    -Gives me Kun who is captain material every week and gets tod
    Of injured Vardy

    1. Irish Madridista ⭐
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

      Not sure Dier is that much more nailed on than Kolarov tbh..

      Also, that -4 leaves you with a 4.6 mid, which contrary to your second point, is a bad thing.

      I was thinking of selling for Ighalo but I'm really torn because I lose 0.4m in team value and only have 0.3m in bank... and I'll prob want him back in. City are prone to conceding even at home and I think he can cause their back 2 problems. I'm not convinced with Chelsea's defence either and think he could score there.

      I said to someone a few days ago you must be crazy to bench Ozil but having thought about it more it might not be such a bad shout. Liverpool have performed well against most of the top prem sides this year. They've struggled against in form top half table teams like Watford, Palace and West Ham.

      But still, Ozil is in such good form that there's still probably a better option. Go with Lukaku; I'm playing him and hope he scores but he could feasibly blank given they're against City.

      1. Zizoulicious
        • 8 Years

        Yeah I also think Liverpool will bounce back from their underwhelming performance against W.Ham and give Arsenal a very tough game. Ozil is been amazing recently but Arsenal look a little jaded so don't know if that makes a difference.

        I'll have more of a think about benching Lukaku but still not too keen on it at the mo

    Would appreciate some opinions on this WC draft lads. Gutted I overlooked Toby early on in the season...and I fear @ 6.0 he might not be the Spurs defender I'm looking for.

    Gomes Hennessey
    Aldeweireld Walker Wollscheid Shawcross Rangel
    KDB Ozil Mahrez Payet Alli
    Aguero Lukaku Ighalo

    For those wondering, I'm probably going for a double-double defensive strategy - hoping to start clawing back some points bit by bit for every CS a popular defense gets (ie TOT and SOT/CRY double up now)

    Concerns I have
    - Stoke defensive returns might have been an anomaly, double up maybe not warranted
    - Overspending on City attack as I'm only getting KDB now
    - No Chelsea on WC seems short sighted

        Thanks IM - sorry for the late response. Yeah, wondering who should make way and whether to go for CHE def or attack - KDB > Yaya is the obvious compromise....or to just go without Spurs attack (Alli > 4.2m) and get Azpi in defence.

              Also true. But he is rather good at them. I think the same sort of thing was levelled at Yaya a couple of years ago early on....Yoi can't not pick somebody on the basis that they're good at free kicks...quite the opposite.

              Either way though I like Oscar and Willian....the worst that can happen is that you sell them if they fail. Good picks.

                Willian took 20-30% of FKs last year too but was pretty crap...Oscar was first choice last season. This just tells me Willian was lucky...I may be wrong but that's my view

                Anyway Alli is my 5th mid now , so when need be I will drop Oscar to the bench , so that's not a worry

      There is often a good correlation between your own club doing well, and a good fpl managers points hauls, if I were to guess.
      Something about recognizing good players early, and having the "courage" to jump on them early.

      Myself, I'm staying clear of punts after Wijn/Cout/Ramsey have failed me lately in the 4th mid depertment

      Infuriatingly inconsistent is my view of him.. Maybe a confidence player but at times he looks excellent but fades out if games too often imo

        Wait.. Are we suppose to actually watch football?
        ..and all this time I thought it was just the numbers that it generates.. Surely there can't be a human element to this game of skill as that would imply that there's luck involved, and ask any one of us, none of us get any luck. We get BAD luck, and we have skill when it goes well 😉

            tbf this year you could probably get into the top 100k without watching a single game, just get the players with the most points.

            Sharon is the perfect example.

            Great skill that woman has.

      About 1.46/7 to the $

      Strong against a weak Euro atm.

    YYT => Payet look ok?

    Also time to sell Moreno, if so who to buy? Toby/Walker/Smith/Simpson/other?

      No I don't think so. Give Payet a game or two to prove fitness

      Toby or Walker equally good options I reckon

      Moreno out is good. I'd rank your replacements in ABDC order. Depends if you wanna dole 6.0 for a defender

    Time for Stanislas - I want every penny of my 108.4 million for the big boys coming back...and not mess up the bench anymore.

      Smart decision. I have Barkley/Alli as 4th/5th mid but it makes no sense keeping a good player on the bench each week. Of course fixtures have an effect on players but it by no means, as we saw wth Alli at the weekend, deems a player incapable of returns. Hypothetically Barkley and Alli could get 150 points each by the end of the season but i could only get 50 points from them botth due to benching decisions. Better to have for example four good midfielders with a guarantee that you're going to get all their points IMO.

      Time to aim for Gosling (4.2), if your budget is 5.1

    If you HAD to do one this week, which one would you choose?

    A) Kane -> Kun
    B) Lukaku -> Kun

    As well as choosing A or B, feel free to say if you think getting rid of either would be madness!

    who to play between moreno, richards and simpson?
    sounds ridiculous but leaning towards richards, palace havent scored in their last 3.

      Of those 3, it's correct to play Richards
