Spot the Differential – Gameweek 27

Our usual Saturday morning scour for some overlooked options brings Palace’s and United’s wide men to the fore. We also call upon the services of Sunderland’s top scorer as Big Sam looks to get one over his former side West Ham at Upton Park this lunchtime.

Yannick Bolasie

Having been sidelined since December with a calf injury, Yannick Bolasie (6.0) made his return to the field in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday, emerging in the second half for an 18-minute cameo. Prior to being ruled out, Bolasie bagged three goals and an assist in his last six league appearances, whereas in his nine-Gameweek absence, the Eagles have floundered on the attacking front – recording a pitiable four goals – so Alan Pardew will be desperate to reinstate the mercurial winger ahead of a trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Comparing the league’s full roster of midfielders in terms of their last four matches, Bolasie ranks third for attempts (15), joint-second for shots inside the box (nine) and joint-top for shots on target (nine), underlining his potential to flourish as a mid-priced differential. Bolasie was criticised for his poor finishing last term but has sharpened up that facet of his game this season, almost doubling his shot-conversion rate (5.8% to 10.3%).

In the wake of their morale-boosting win at White Hart Lane, Palace will fancy their chances of breaching a Baggies back line that’s mustered just three clean sheets in their previous 16 outings. Furthermore, Bolasie will certainly source encouragement from the revelation that West Brom have conceded the joint-second-most big chances (25) in home matches.

Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay (7.8) offered a snapshot of his manifest talents during Manchester United’s 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland, netting a driven strike and bamboozling the opposing full-backs with his explosive injections of pace and balletic footwork. In light of Wayne Rooney’s absence and Anthony Martial’s switch to the lone-striker berth, Depay would’ve expected to line up against Arsenal on Sunday. Now that Martial looks likely to sit out that head-to-head with a hamstring complaint, the Red Devils’ Dutch starlet could be their prime offensive threat at Old Trafford.

Despite clocking just 1109 minutes so far this campaign, Depay has chalked up just three fewer attempts (39 to 43) and one attempt shot on target (14 to 15) than Man United’s top shooter, Juan Mata. Clearly, the former PSV Eindhoven recruit has suffered from the second-worst shot-conversion rate (5.1%) among his midfield team-mates, yet his two goals in as many European starts over the past week suggests the tide is turning and will surely boost his confidence.

Although the Gunners have kept it tight at the back of late (two goals conceded in four), they’ve been far from impenetrable on their travels this season, shipping three goals to Liverpool and four to Southampton since Gameweek 18. As for United, their drive to win at all costs in pursuit of a Champions League berth could engender a more swashbuckling approach that’s conducive to attacking returns.

Jermain Defoe

Following a trio of eye-catching performances that culminated in a 2-1 win over Manchester United, Sunderland have courted our attention on the attacking front. As the Black Cats top scorer with 10 goals, Jermain Defoe (5.1) serves as an enticing pick-up in a Gameweek where highly owned forwards like Romelu Lukaku (35% ownership) and Sergio Aguero (29%) are facing blanks. Moreover, Wahbi Khazri – who notched eight key passes in first two starts – is shaping up to be the perfect foil to Sunderland’s poacher.

Defoe doesn’t chart high among his counterparts for attempts (44) this season, but he’s profited from clinical finishing: no forward that’s tallied over 1000 minutes of pitch time boasts a superior shot-conversion rate (22.4%). Prior to a road encounter against West Ham United, it’s also worth noting that seven of the diminutive frontman’s 10 goals have arrived in away fixtures.

Like Defoe, the Wearsiders as a whole have travelled well, ranking eighth for goals (17) and second for shot-conversion rate (13.5%). Indeed, Sam Allardyce’s squad netted seven time in their previous trio of away match-ups, which bodes well for a trip to the Boleyn Ground. Looking beyond that tussle, Sunderland play host to Palace’s generous defence, so there’s definitely scope for Defoe to embark on another purple patch.

I think two is one too many Arsenal mids. Not much between them. Get rid of the one which you will lose the least value on. I'd assume that is Sanchez.

JEvans injured so you will only have max 10 play - therefore may be worth a hit at effective cost of only -2 to set yourself up for next couple of weeks given you have 2 Moreno blanks. Southampton def seems most obvious given you already have 3 Lei, or maybe short term punt on cheap Stoke or Man U def if you can find one not crocked?

I c so STK sounds logical.think you should get off lei def in the long run or is that your diff? Think I'd take the hit in c. If you are no hits policy just do b. With payet if that works for gw 30 for you.

Why Wolly you have 3 defenders that have good fixtures for the next 2 weeks where Wolly is needed. Plan ahead and get Williams (NOR bou AVL sto) or Kompany (AVL nor MUN bou) for Simpson....

      1. andyd
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

So you're saying not to get any def this wk? Issue there is that it leaves me with payet/khazri as the only viable option and then a bench dilemma next wk.

    4. Dreaming of Irene

C for me, then maybe B next week if still keen on that move, alternatively maybe just Moreno to Southampton def if you have funds, or Stokes Wolly if not to get 11 out and plan tranfers for GW 30 next week.

I just went with B. Got payet in. Wouldn't want to get him next wk with hard fixture and then the blank in gw30 but couldn't resist him this wk home to worst away defence in league. I think I'll be benching moreno every wk in anticipation for DGW. cheers for response ☺

Ideas for midfield differential punts for GWs 27,28,29? Up to 8.0.

Yeah, between Depay and Khazri for me. Depay might be a great option if he can nail down a starting spot for later GWs, benchable for 30 and has CPL, AVL in 34.

    Don't understand the Arnie love.

His 2 next fixtures seems good and no blank.
But He hasn't scored for a while and not very consistent. And except last week Stoke has scored few goals lately.

Owners like me are just hoping he can find some form basically. And who better than Villa to rediscover his goalscoring touch?

I see, worth getting in for a hit or get Willian until gw 29?

Getting him for a hit is a different story.....

I would get him for no hit for sure though

I've gome Ramsey to Arnie as a bit of of a punt and he'll become my 5th mid. He was only in my thoughts because he has a fixture in gw30 and I'm banking on arsenal getting through in the cup.

And he has the added bonus of two nice fixtures coming up as you mentioned.

Anyone playing villa must be worth a punt at the moment

Think you covered it in your second line - plan then ship him for Siggy or Ayew seems a viable short term plan to play fixtures over form.

He was carrying a slight hammy and then ill which has limited he recent returns, but home v Villa and New defs is as good as it gets for a punt - it's a lottery which Stoke Mid to be on, but if he plays he is probably the best option, particularly if Bojan on bench so he gets more set pieces and maybe pens.

    a) Mahrez (safe)

        Ericksen/Siggy/Sanchez/Antonio/Wijnaldum

I could drop of Wij, but then i have to chose who to bench? antonio vs arnie

Not an overly appealing lineup this week, any changes needed?

    Butland
    Dier Cresswell VVD
    Ozil Sanchez Mahrez Alli Stanislas
    Kane Vardy

    Henn Williams Simpson Kun

    1FT, 1.7 in the bank.

    A) Simpson to Fuchs?
    B) Save
    D) Something else

I think it'd be cheeky using the FT for Kun > Ighalo. Maybe Williams to Fuchs. But it's best to save.

this would allow you to bench Stan and go with a tidy 343

I would say Fonte . Stats don't seem to indicate they should not have had all those clean sheets. Either way they have to concede a goal some time.
