This Much We Know – Gameweek 27

Despite the quick-fire turnaround in fixtures, we find time to cast an eye over the weekend’s eight league matches. Alexis Sanchez’ dire run of form, Marko Arnautovic as the go-to-Stoke option, the toils of Tottenham’s main men at the Lane and Jamie Vardy’s remarkable King Power consistency are all amongst our lunchtime menu.

We’re all missing the Sanchez spark…
It’s a single assist in ten league appearances now for the Arsenal winger after yet another disappointing display. Frustratingly, Sanchez is still getting the chances – since retuning from injury in Gameweek 23, he’s fired more shots from inside the box (14) than any midfielder but his woeful lack of accuracy has dented Arsenal’s title bid and deprived us of a valid option for our five-man midfields. The Chilean may have the underlying stats but, allied with Mesut Ozil’s return to form, he remains off our radars until he can rediscover his eye for goal in and around the area.

United can win matches with kids…
Louis van Gaal’s side may be blighted by injuries from back to front but they still proved too much for Arsenal at Old Trafford yesterday. Marcus Rashford continued his stunning rise to prominence with another double in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial, whilst Jesse Lingard’s assist means he’s earned points in four of the last seven Gameweeks. Given that the Dutchman was forced to start with Guillermo Varela and introduce Tim Fosu-Mensah off the bench, it seems that an injection of youth has given new life to his much-maligned “project” as United start to click.

Mertesacker is the lesser of two evils…
The German dropped to the bench for yesterday’s trip to United as Arsene Wenger turned to fit-again Gabriel to partner Laurent Koscielny at centre-half. Gabriel’s return hardly helped the Gunners’ cause, though, as they conceded more than two goals for just the second time this term to remain five points off the summit. Certainly, at a price of 4.3 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Brazilian’s cost makes him the more appealing Fantasy pick but yesterday’s showing may well fast-track Per Mertesacker into the XI as the Gunners welcome Swansea to the Emirates in midweek.

Antonio’s form hammers home our Payet frustration…
The West Ham playmaker was again overshadowed by Michail Antonio as Slaven Bilic’s side climbed into fifth spot with a narrow home win over Sunderland. Whilst Payet has demonstrated his penchant for explosive returns, with two double-figure hauls in the last seven, he’s now blanked in eight of his previous ten league outings, whereas Antonio, on the other hand, has earned points in seven of his last ten. With Sam Byram suspended, though, Antonio may have to fill in at right-back if the injuries fail to clear, affording the Frenchman the chance to re-establish himself at the top of the Hammers’ midfield pecking order.

Arnautovic is undisputedly the prize Potter…
The Austrian now sits joint-fifth in the midfield standings after racking up a 15-point haul at home to struggling Villa. With Bojan handed just one start in the last five and Xherdan Shaqiri finding the net in just one of his 20 league outings since arriving in the summer, Arnautovic has shrugged off the competition to emerge as the Potters’ main Fantasy asset. It’s nine goals so far now for the former Inter man, who scored just once last term, and with 11 Gameweeks still to go, he’s already registered his highest total points haul since arriving on these shores in 2013/14.

Some are grinding their way to safety…
A goalless draw at Vicarage Road helped Watford and Bournemouth edge another point away from the drop zone. Whilst the Cherries are not yet out of the relegation mire, Quique Sanchez Flores’ side now sit on the cusp of safety, after accruing 37 points thus far. Having previously scored in 11 successive league matches, Watford have now failed to notch in five of the subsequent seven, and with their manager happy to tighten up in order to ensure his side’s survival, there’s no real surprise to see Odion Ighalo already shipped out by over 40,000 FPL managers as we turn to those sides with everything still to play for.

Spurs at home are proving a difficult call…
A 2-1 comeback win over Swansea took Tottenham to just two points off the summit but once again their main men disappointed at the Lane. Dele Alli has mustered a mere three assists in his last seven home appearances, Christian Eriksen has blanked in five of the last seven in front of his own fans, whilst Harry Kane has now produced a goal or assist in just five of 14 outings at the Lane. Although Mauricio Pochettino’s troops have won eight and drawn four of those fixtures, their chief protagonists are proving far more reliable Fantasy candidates on the road.

Vardy’s King Power consistency is hard to beat…
Whilst Kane toils in front of his own fans, the same cannot be said for Jamie Vardy. In a Gameweek where we were deprived of Sergio Aguero’s services, the Foxes frontman – who topped our Captain Poll for the visit of Norwich – showed he’s as close to a home banker as we can get this season. Vardy’s assist for Leonardo Ulloa’s late winner means he’s now scored or assisted in 11 of his 13 appearances at the King Power, underlining his remarkable consistency ahead of home encounters against West Brom and Newcastle in the next three Gameweeks.

Berahino’s return can keep the Baggies afloat…
It’s fair to say that the youngster’s reintroduction to the West Brom XI has paid off for Tony Pulis. With Berahino back on board, the Baggies have chalked up back-to-back victories against Everton and Palace, scoring four times in the process – previously, they’d won two of 12 matches prior to his return. The Hawthorns outfit have still scored just 27 times – only two teams have netted fewer – but with Berahino back in the fold and Salomon Rondon serving up two goals and an assist in his last three starts, their new-improved attack may well prove decisive in firing them to safety.

Both are really similar - some others and I were commenting about it last night! Difficult to do a comparison on the member's area because they (Otamendi and Kompany) have only started playing together really recently.

Kompany has scored a great many vital goals in his time, and at the start of the season he scored twice. But the biggest problem is that his fitness could mean he's rested sometimes for Mangala, whereas Otamendi seems to be really nailed as one of the centre halves.

IDK about the 0.4 difference helping too much, unless you need the flex in the bank.

I might just do Otamendi for better "nailedness" - I guess see what happens during this week vs. Liverpool

Indeed. I think Otamendi + Siggy in for Dann and one of Payet/Sanchez (probably the latter) is what should be done.

What's your (c) call this week, HVT?

                Yea similar Sanchez/Moreno (maybe Bellerin!) > Silva(Siggy)/Otamendi
Özil (c) / Vardy (VC) right now mate.

Cool - I also made the Sanchez error, am tempted to (c) but it just seems a step too far, plus if he gets points he's a differential in of himself now anyway.

Ah cool, I don't have Ozil so I guess I'm going Vardy. Worried about no Kante for Leicester, though. Tempted by Aguero but I doubt he'll play more than 70... usual Kunundrum 🙂

Luckily I kept Özil, Vardy 11/13 in terms of returns at home so should be good.
Fwiw Kun is my 3rd choice, ticking away nicely right now.

I suppose if I'm honest it's nothing to do with cash, Kompanybwas always good for a goal. Otamendi at 6.5 feels a tad expensive for a basic cs, I think he has 1 goal this season.

what are peoples thoughts on the best time to wildcard?
i personally think gw36 will be the best time as that will probably be the best opportunity to get 15 dgw'ers and bench boost.
if we wildcard in gw33 surely you get rid of leciester/spurs players for the dgw, would you really want to go into gw35-38 without any leicester/spurs players?

    GW34 planning update

Just realised to field 15 (BB chip) i can only do this with a minimum of -20/24 over the course of weeks 30 to 33. I am thinking WC is inevitable in gw33 for BB!!!

    I can field 11 with -12 so that's not a problem.

All thanks to GW30 that has ruined a late wc plan... Oh well.

Anyone heard anything about a potential knee injury to David Silva?

On the 5Live it was mentioned he was seen with an ice pack on his dodgy knee (responsible for his last injury) after the league cup final. Haven't seen any articles mentioning it though.

I was considering him for GK29-33 where Man City have a nice run of games.

Obviously i brought in Alli for the 1st time this season before the weekend.

Was going to use AOA this week, but sounds like he's a major doubt. Probably a waste then right?

    Just play Targett instead?

This one probably isnt for the Arsenal fans (not the In Wenger we trust lot anyway) its just my opinion.

If Arsenal dont win the league this season, and one of Leicester or Spurs do, will this signify the end of Wengers reign?

I said before that Arsenal wont win the league this season because of Wenger.

Are his tactics, methods outdated? Is he to blame for Arsenals imbalanced squad? Should he also shoulder the blame for injury record? Will they ever win the league or champions league at all in the future?

Or is he all mighty and should go on regardless?

of course, so you then have to question whether the AFC board are serious about trophies or chasing the profit?

Wenger has commented few times over the last 10 years that it's difficult to win silverware when Man City and Chelsea have deeper pockets.

Wengers tactics are not outdated, what is wrong is his failure to make the necessary changes.
Mourinho is majorly disliked but when he came back to chelsea he identified the problems and signed matic, fabregas, costa, courtois.
For years arsenal have needed a proper cb (or 2), defensive mid and centre forward.
He got lucky with coquelin and even the keeper - if cech hadnt been available he'd prob still have chesney in goals.
Great manager but blind - or stubborn - at times

I think he's stubborn and also genuinely cares about his players. The problem he has is that he lacks the ruthlessness of a Ferguson - even if SAF loved the player as a guy, he would be ruthless about removing them if he could improve the team. Yes, he had his failings, and yes it's United (ugh) BUT you can't argue with the record.

It can pay off (see Coquelin emergence) but more than anything we've needed a strong CB, as you say (when City bought Otamendi I thought that was a missed opportunity for us) and a proven striker (as much as I love Ozil, why we passed on Higuain remains a mystery to me).

TL;DR - too stubbornly invested in his players, I think.

Fair point, you can definitely argue that. I'd say for how he's transformed the English game in terms of sports science and play style you can make an argument for a positive holistic effect that was inspired by his appointment, but that is a bit old hat nowadays.

Hence I regard him as influential, he introduced Sports Science into the english game and the results were splendid. Every other club followed suit.

My own opinion of europe is that its not the be all and end all.
Shankly never won the european cup but he's always labelled as a great.
Take your point though with the barca team of the last decade winning the chl has been a toughie - but his teams have won 2 doubles inc the unbeaten league season playing unbelievable stuff so from that perspective i think he's a great.
But he could and should have addressed the glaring gaps in his teams years ago

            8 years, 2 months ago

Shankly did win the Euefa cup, I would say he is regarded a great, because he took LFC from division two upwards, to titles in the first division. He pretty much built that club.

Not many managers have done that.

            1. Bazzalona

Uefa cups not the European Cup though is it?
Still a trophy but he always failed at Europe's top table (tho as i say europe doesn't matter THAT much in my opinion, certainly not a defining issue)
Shankly did a great job as you say building the club up but even he 'only' won 3 league titles in 15 seasons.
What i don't understand with wenger is how for the first decade he re-generated that team brilliantly yet for the last 10 years has failed to see what everyone else sees.
Its as if for some reason he became fixated with playing the barca way and anything else was sacrilege

This is my view, in football, a manager has a shelf life of 10 years, competing at the highest level. Of course there are some exceptions.

I think thats right when you're dealing with the same players, end of the day there will come a point when players will have heard everything you've got to say, but if you've got a new set of players then that process can begin again imo.
There will inevitably be a point when age or motivation becomes an issue i guess.
It is a shame that he hasn't been as successful since because people do forget what he achieved early on.

Also, the day to day schedule takes its toll on Managers too. Younger managers enter into the game, with new ideas, more hunger. Its very difficult to change your football idea as a manager at a later stage of your career. Arsene is a casualty of this.

I think he'll probably be beginning to look at succession now - we won't be seeing him pushed out, he's omnipotent within the club, but this has been a really, really strong chance for us to win the league but it seems that the same old failings keep permeating any challenge we mount. False dawn piles upon false dawn. I really hope we can go on a run but I'm really lukewarm about our chances.

I do trust in AW, but it could, and maybe should, be close to the end now.

It is like a recurring dream - they look good but when spring comes they rarely win the crunch games.

He inherited a team with leaders and a winning mindset- Adams, Bold, Keown, Wright to name a few. He then bought in players with similar mindsets- Viera, Henry, Pires.

Since then, he's not replaced those personalities.

        1. Funkyav

This is defnitely a major part of the problem

Has he ever signed a top class striker? - Henry was a winger when he signed him.

Other than Cech who was given to him (where else could cech have gone after Roman said he could stay in London) - you could say same about Goalkeepers

Yes he changed the landscape when he arrived. But that was 20 years ago. In the last 10 years have they progressed? I would argue they have gone backwards.

        2. Individual

Agreed. He DID change the mindset of the original core (less drinking; better nutrition, 'chew to win') BUT he has been less able to replicate his original choice of strong players with character, which has really cost us.

In Football Manager terms, our teams' Determination score has dropped from 19-20 to around 13-14.

His 2004 team was lehmann lauren campbell toure cole, ljungberg viera edu pires, henry wiltord.
So you're right about him inheriting the defensive leaders but that unbeaten league team was entirely his own

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

It made his job easier to inherit those leaders when he joined, you could say he was fortunate. People forget, in the 20 years he's been at Arsenal. He's only won 3 league titles.

Without doubt it made his job a lot lot easier.....but no one really saw those 98-04 years coming did they.
Brought amazing domestic success, which just makes the last 10-12 years more mystifying to me

Some players are special, not readily available, just take Chelsea's core for the last ten years; Terry, Lampard, Cech and Drogba. Chelsea will struggle to replace those personalities.

True, then you have the choice do you change the style of the team....thats part of the wenger conundrum for me.
I know replacing certain players is tough but from the big powerful types like viera petit henry he's gone through fabregas nasri cazorla walcott etc.
Definitely been a change on thinking as i recall him saying how in the modern game physical power was a must

Look at the list of players you mentioned he's brought in, none of those players had the fight and will to win of Petit, Veira and Henry.

He's recruited skill but not players with a winning mentality, something which Fergie always looked for when recruiting players.

The list was more about the lack of physicality compared to the likes of petit and viera but i agree totally different characters.
Ironic thing is how many players moved on from arsenal last 5 seasons and DID win the title.....nasri clichy toure rvp fabregas.
That must really get up wengers nose

Only teams more or less certain of gw35 with dgw 34 right now is LIV, and maybe MCI and NEW. Not sure how you can get 15 dgw in 34 without struggling to field 11 in 35.
