Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 31

Mesut Ozil limps out of Arsenal’s win over Everton. Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino misses out at St Mary’s due to a hamstring problem, whilst Man City are sweating over Joe Hart’s fitness after he was forced off in yesterday’s derby loss to United.

Arsenal
Mesut Ozil (ankle) and David Ospina (back) sustained minor knocks during Arsenal’s 2-0 win at Everton, which Arsene Wenger believes will dissipate within a matter of days:

“Both are similar kicks and a few days should heal their problems. I don’t think it is a basic problem.”

Although Ozil drew his third successive blank on the weekend, Arsenal’s swashbuckling display at Goodison Park bodes well for his attacking potential ahead of a favourable schedule that includes back-to-back home ties in Gameweek 34 (CRY, WBA). That being said, a portion of his 44% ownership might be tempted to re-invest in Alexis Sanchez, given that the Chilean winger has mustered attacking returns (one goal, three assists) in four of his last five starts in all competitions.

Aston Villa
Micah Richards was absent for Aston Villa’s trip to Swansea but, according to Remi Garde, is expected to be passed fit for Chelsea’s visit next Gameweek:

“It is a groin injury. I don’t think (he will be out long) the doctor has told me it is a light injury.”

Chelsea
Belgium manager Marc Wilmots reckons that Eden Hazard faces some time on the sidelines because of a muscular complaint:

“I have told Hazard to have some rest. We are not too worried about him. He has a muscle injury. He’ll be out for three to four weeks.”

Elsewhere in the Blues camp, Kenedy – who was preferred to Pedro on the left flank in Hazard’s absence against West Ham – was substituted at the break against West Ham United after suffering a head injury.

With Diego Costa suspended for the upcoming trip to Villa, Chelsea’s attack is posing problems for Fantasy managers. Guus Hiddink’s decision to start with Loic Remy up top saw Bertrand Traore handed a second-half sub role against the Hammers last weekend, and whilst Willian offers a greater security of starts, the Brazilian has stuttered for form in recent outings and picked up points in just two of his last nine outings as the champions stumble across the finishing line.

Liverpool
Roberto Firmino has withdrawn from international duty due to a hamstring issue that will be assessed by Liverpool during the two-week break.

Considering that the Reds chalked up five more goals (13) than any team in their previous four outings and enjoy two double Gameweeks over the run-in, Firmino – who’s recorded five goals and four assists in six starts – had been pinpointed as a prime target. In the event that the former Hoffenheim star is sidelined, though, Philippe Coutinho (three goals in five starts across all competitions) has also staked a claim after netting at St Mary’s yesterday, whilst Adam Lallana has stepped up his output considerably, racking up three goals and trio of assists in six league appearances.

Manchester City
Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that Joe Hart (calf) and Raheem Sterling (groin) are likely to be out of action for around a month after picking up injuries during Manchester City’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United:

“Both of them have muscle injuries – Raheem in his groin; Joe in his calf. I don’t think muscle injuries can heal in one week. They normally need three or four weeks.”

Although Willy Caballero (4.8) represents a cut-price punt in the absence of Hart, few Fantasy managers will have confidence in a rearguard that’s without its first-choice shot-stopper and talismanic captain. In terms of securing Sky Blues defensive coverage for their double Gameweek 34 (che, new), Nicolas Otamendi – who’s expected to return for their trip to Bournemouth after the international break – is currently the only safe selection, though it’s fair to say that the Argentine has done little to justify his 6.5 price tag of late.

Newcastle United
Rafa Benitez explained that Aleksandar Mitrovic was ushered off the pitch in the final moments of the Tyne-Wear derby after losing consciousness due to a clash of heads:

“The positive thing was he wanted to play. The good thing about the doctor is he was stopping him, just in case. I think he was right because he lost his consciousness. You have to protect the player.”

Further compounding the Magpies’ defensive issues, Daryl Janmaat left the field at the 71-minute mark with a knee problem that has since ruled him out of Holland duties over the break.

Norwich City

Robbie Brady injured his shoulder during Norwich City’s priceless 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion and now faces a scan to determine his availability for Ireland’s international friendlies. Speaking on the goalscorer, Alex Neil played down fears over the severity of Brady’s complaint:

“We’ll see what happens over the next 48 hours. He might wake up tomorrow really stiff and can’t turn his neck. In which case I don’t think he’ll be available for the games but he might wake up fine. He landed on his neck and his left eye got a bit blurred, in terms of vision, so we didn’t want to take any chances and we got him off. It was just the fact he landed on his neck. He’ll be fine, he is a hardy lad.”

Swansea City
Neil Taylor missed Swansea’s head-to-head against Villa with a dead leg but will still team up with Wales ahead of their friendlies against Northern Ireland and Ukraine. Staying within the Swans camp, Stephen Kingsley was subbed off at the 86-minute mark with a knock.

West Ham United
Sam Byram was ruled out of the Hammers’ trip to Stamford Bridge after suffering a “minor knock” in training.

Suspensions

Newcastle’s Jack Colback became the latest player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope after collecting his tenth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s Tyne-Wear derby. The versatile midfielder – who was utilised at left-back against Sunderland – will miss upcoming league encounters against Norwich and Southampton.

Elsewhere, Diego Costa and Gareth Barry both serve the second of two-match bans and will miss the upcoming clashes against Villa and United respectively.

HOPEFULLY(!!!!) this won't happen again because we have more data vs. the "clean slate" of GW0.

Think it'll come down captains either delivering or premium option (e.g. Ozil) absolutely failing.

Hi all, hunting for a final midfield punt before wildcard still.

Play one, Bench one, Replace one (assuming international break ends tomorrow...)
    Eriksen
    Siggy
    Shaqiri

    And Replace with who:
    Traore
    Willian
    Fabregas
Sanchez (*only if I remove Eriksen)
Ozil (*only if I remove Eriksen)
    Khazri
    Coutinho

Tough choice for a final punt - resisting doing a boring Dann -> Koscielny/Bellerin as far as I can!!

              Ouchie.

Maybe Ozil then and play safe.

Tempted to just do Dann --> Kosc now (ML rival has Bellerin but will probably bring him in on WC) and roll with:

              Mahrez Payet (c) Siggy Eriksen

      and either..

      Bench Shaqiri
      Sell Eriksen for Ozil

        Thanks IM

ML rival has Eriksen but no Siggy / Shaqiri, so I'm thinking I should play one of them - only worry with Siggy is that Swansea may be absolutely dire now they're safe w/ nothing to play for. Will think on it - guess Shaq is coming back from injury so will only play 60, if at all

Thinking about option 2, I'm actually more tempted by Eriksen --> Sanchez as a "flair" pick for one week, then picking up Ozil for the DGW to free up some cash for elsewhere

I have Ivan in the Villa/Chelsea matchup which I hope would be enough...

I think Ivan is enough Chelsea personally, but many would disagree.. I fancy Villa to NOT roll over and let Chelsea casually ruin them.. Although Willian could be a good 1 week punt.

Sanchez could be a great 1 week punt, I think Ozil represents better value but if money is no hassle then sure go for a Sanchez punt temporarily 🙂

I'd definitely play Siggy, Stoke are done and dusted too and Siggy is in great form.

Okay cool, thanks IM. Between Siggy as a differential or Eriksen to cover my ML leader.

Biggest worry, as I've said above, is Sanchez plays for Chile on 30th March at 00:30GMT, then comes back to London for 2nd April at 15:00 GMT - surely he'd be a bit knackered?

Ozil I will get for WC but just seems so boring for the 1 week punt!

Will keep thinking on it - this is why I was thinking of doing Khazri or Lanzini or something for a hail mary...

I have Ivan for that game - I wish I could play all 3 but I also have Mahrez (undroppable) and Payet (undroppable and probably will captain). Also wouldn't want to bench any of Kane, Vardy (final hurrah in my team) or Kun.

I'd have to bench one of Siggy or Eriksen in this front 8 if I did what you suggest:
        Mahrez Payet Willian Siggy Eriksen
        Kane Kun Vardy

        Which would you reckon? 🙂

It will not be popular, but I would bench Mahrez. At home against South Hampton. They are playing for the 1 - 0 win. Mahrez hasn't done well at home either.

Yeah I know, but Mahrez leaves me SO exposed to my ML leader picking up points there - trying to gain a tricky 15pts from an ML leader who has been covering me all season.

He has Mahrez, Antonio, Ozil, Arnie, Eriksen

So I want to cover Mahrez at least

Anyone else eying up a double West Brom defence on wild card? Evans and Dawson easily affordable, both a goal threat and in three matches (including the week after) I'd back Pulis to keep at least one clean sheet regardless of the opposition

By sheer volume, West Ham and Watford could be considered. Both are decent defensively and have 2 games gw34, and I would think it's reasonably realistic to expect a clean sheet in 1 of their 2 games. Watford also play West Brom who sometimes struggle to score. Ironically, West Ham play Watford, who are also struggling to score of late.

They are so unpredictable. A good gamble though. Many games and that just increases the probabilities that they will have some level of random success (on both sides of the ball).

Cool. One way or another, I will most likely have 3 Pool players for my gw33 wc just because they have the greatest number of games. Thus, just going by sheer probabilities, Liverpool have the greatest opportunities to produce fantasy points. Vanilla reasoning, yet fundamental fantasy sports strategy.

Lallana seems to be a regular player of late, and is producing, and is attractively priced. I am partial to Coutinho and/or Firmino and a defender/keeper myself, and also have an eye on Milner. I am wide open to data and suggestions. so thanks for sharing the table.

        Yeah have to agree

the 3 goals conceded yesterday were mostly Skittle's fault, and if Kolo had have come on I think it would have been a different score line.

Migs, Clyne or Sakho are best way to go for Pool defence, no one else is nailed

IDK. From what I saw, Sakho was seemingly responsible for 2 of those goals. So slow to react and cover the guy with the ball in the box.

watch the goals again, people seem to have this strange hatred for Sakho, he is an outstanding defender and apart from a few poor games after he came back from a bad injury he is has been a beast. Skrtel has been a problem for a long time and seems to have gotten away with it for years, he was only good when he had the brilliant Agger covering him. Also Skrtel just makes the whole team nervous and maybe Sakho looked more at fault cause he had to do a lot of work and covering for Skrtel.

Skrtel is a terrible tackler and the first thing he does when coming on is gives away a pen. His first game back was last week for the U-21s and he got a red card.

              Okay, a few counterpoints:

I have no inherent bias against Sakho. I am an American, and have no allegiance to any EPL team. You can insert other American-based humor instead (such as Lord Drumpf, etc.).

Your anti-Skrtel rant is quite ironic given your allegation that many are anti-Sakho. I am merely observing and reporting. Perhaps we are seeing the same thing and interpreting things differently. As a psychologist, I can state that this is a known phenomenon.

Seriously...I saw what I saw, and it seemed that Sakho could be done much better to help prevent two of the goals scored by Southampton.

my anti Skrtel rant is coming from years and years of terrible defending in all fairness.

I mean Sakho is a player who unjustly comes under a lot of criticism, like Moreno.

I am not saying it is 100% Skrtel's fault, but I honestly think if Lovren had of stayed on or Kolo come on Saints would not have scored those 3 goals.

Fair enough. I was more having a little fun at your post as it was a bit of a good rant there.

Yes, there is a bandwagon element to sports discussion forums for sure. We see it here (there, everywhere) in terms of opinions about performance (see "donkey" usage) and team templates. It is always a good thing to provide a different point of view!

And last thing he did was to give up possession nearby own penalty box. And in between those two, he blocked his GK's view for a shot.

Still, I'd blame Migs for the first two goals. Should have saved them.

And after conceding the first goal, it's kind of sad that he also conceded the shot for the third one. It's as if it didn't really matter whether you try the front corner or the back corner, Migs protects both equally badly. Or not at all.

this s true as well. but Migs, along with Skrtel, has been a long term defensive issue for Liverpool.

He does something amazing like save the peno and then he gets beat at his near post....that's typical Migs, does something amazing then drops the ball in his net the next minute. very strange

Problem is the lack of cheap nailed-on options from Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool. Gabriel, Darmian and Moreno do not butter the parsnips for me.
