Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 31

Mesut Ozil limps out of Arsenal’s win over Everton. Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino misses out at St Mary’s due to a hamstring problem, whilst Man City are sweating over Joe Hart’s fitness after he was forced off in yesterday’s derby loss to United.

Arsenal
Mesut Ozil (ankle) and David Ospina (back) sustained minor knocks during Arsenal’s 2-0 win at Everton, which Arsene Wenger believes will dissipate within a matter of days:

“Both are similar kicks and a few days should heal their problems. I don’t think it is a basic problem.”

Although Ozil drew his third successive blank on the weekend, Arsenal’s swashbuckling display at Goodison Park bodes well for his attacking potential ahead of a favourable schedule that includes back-to-back home ties in Gameweek 34 (CRY, WBA). That being said, a portion of his 44% ownership might be tempted to re-invest in Alexis Sanchez, given that the Chilean winger has mustered attacking returns (one goal, three assists) in four of his last five starts in all competitions.

Aston Villa
Micah Richards was absent for Aston Villa’s trip to Swansea but, according to Remi Garde, is expected to be passed fit for Chelsea’s visit next Gameweek:

“It is a groin injury. I don’t think (he will be out long) the doctor has told me it is a light injury.”

Chelsea
Belgium manager Marc Wilmots reckons that Eden Hazard faces some time on the sidelines because of a muscular complaint:

“I have told Hazard to have some rest. We are not too worried about him. He has a muscle injury. He’ll be out for three to four weeks.”

Elsewhere in the Blues camp, Kenedy – who was preferred to Pedro on the left flank in Hazard’s absence against West Ham – was substituted at the break against West Ham United after suffering a head injury.

With Diego Costa suspended for the upcoming trip to Villa, Chelsea’s attack is posing problems for Fantasy managers. Guus Hiddink’s decision to start with Loic Remy up top saw Bertrand Traore handed a second-half sub role against the Hammers last weekend, and whilst Willian offers a greater security of starts, the Brazilian has stuttered for form in recent outings and picked up points in just two of his last nine outings as the champions stumble across the finishing line.

Liverpool
Roberto Firmino has withdrawn from international duty due to a hamstring issue that will be assessed by Liverpool during the two-week break.

Considering that the Reds chalked up five more goals (13) than any team in their previous four outings and enjoy two double Gameweeks over the run-in, Firmino – who’s recorded five goals and four assists in six starts – had been pinpointed as a prime target. In the event that the former Hoffenheim star is sidelined, though, Philippe Coutinho (three goals in five starts across all competitions) has also staked a claim after netting at St Mary’s yesterday, whilst Adam Lallana has stepped up his output considerably, racking up three goals and trio of assists in six league appearances.

Manchester City
Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that Joe Hart (calf) and Raheem Sterling (groin) are likely to be out of action for around a month after picking up injuries during Manchester City’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United:

“Both of them have muscle injuries – Raheem in his groin; Joe in his calf. I don’t think muscle injuries can heal in one week. They normally need three or four weeks.”

Although Willy Caballero (4.8) represents a cut-price punt in the absence of Hart, few Fantasy managers will have confidence in a rearguard that’s without its first-choice shot-stopper and talismanic captain. In terms of securing Sky Blues defensive coverage for their double Gameweek 34 (che, new), Nicolas Otamendi – who’s expected to return for their trip to Bournemouth after the international break – is currently the only safe selection, though it’s fair to say that the Argentine has done little to justify his 6.5 price tag of late.

Newcastle United
Rafa Benitez explained that Aleksandar Mitrovic was ushered off the pitch in the final moments of the Tyne-Wear derby after losing consciousness due to a clash of heads:

“The positive thing was he wanted to play. The good thing about the doctor is he was stopping him, just in case. I think he was right because he lost his consciousness. You have to protect the player.”

Further compounding the Magpies’ defensive issues, Daryl Janmaat left the field at the 71-minute mark with a knee problem that has since ruled him out of Holland duties over the break.

Norwich City

Robbie Brady injured his shoulder during Norwich City’s priceless 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion and now faces a scan to determine his availability for Ireland’s international friendlies. Speaking on the goalscorer, Alex Neil played down fears over the severity of Brady’s complaint:

“We’ll see what happens over the next 48 hours. He might wake up tomorrow really stiff and can’t turn his neck. In which case I don’t think he’ll be available for the games but he might wake up fine. He landed on his neck and his left eye got a bit blurred, in terms of vision, so we didn’t want to take any chances and we got him off. It was just the fact he landed on his neck. He’ll be fine, he is a hardy lad.”

Swansea City
Neil Taylor missed Swansea’s head-to-head against Villa with a dead leg but will still team up with Wales ahead of their friendlies against Northern Ireland and Ukraine. Staying within the Swans camp, Stephen Kingsley was subbed off at the 86-minute mark with a knock.

West Ham United
Sam Byram was ruled out of the Hammers’ trip to Stamford Bridge after suffering a “minor knock” in training.

Suspensions

Newcastle’s Jack Colback became the latest player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope after collecting his tenth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s Tyne-Wear derby. The versatile midfielder – who was utilised at left-back against Sunderland – will miss upcoming league encounters against Norwich and Southampton.

Elsewhere, Diego Costa and Gareth Barry both serve the second of two-match bans and will miss the upcoming clashes against Villa and United respectively.

Consider Fabregas? He can score when asekd to do so, and seems to be finding his game. He is also on free kicks, which I think resulted in two goals this past weekend. And, of course, he is a good assist man. If I were to punt on the contra-Villa strategy in gw32, I would actually get Cesc.

Sheet, even any forward to Rashford opens the door to many possibilities. I have a SV = 107.7, and with Rashford, I'd feel like I could be a big spender for sure.

Back on planet Claire, no way I drop the league's highest potential scoring striker who has a DGW and a game in gw35. However, I could drop my 3rd striker spot (reserved for Lukaku, Welbeck, Martial) for Rashford. Depends on Rooney to some extent, too.

Feels like an unnecessary risk. Although Man City and Kun have not done well on the road, there is certainly a degree of probability that this pattern will change, and I am really uncomfy missing out on the returns should it occur. For a single gw, with two games, I'd want to have Kun cos if he does explode, it's big. Finally, @ Chelsea and Newcastle do not pose very strong defensive opposition.

Honestly you make great points. But what it does for the rest of my team is just incredible. One player isn't going to match that. My SV is 103.

Thank you. Got it. We have to tailor our teams to what makes the most sense. Your selling value is valid factor in making this decision. My SV=107.7, so I have a bit of luxury of keeping Kun.

I want to provide an overview of players I'd consider for my wildcard. I thought I would share it here, and gather some thoughts about my thinking and the choices I made. I have seen discussions about this topic and wanted to contribute something of my own. These are only DGW players.

    Here we go:

By team (Highest team in the league first, lowest last)

Arsenal: Bellerin, Koscielny | Ozil, Sanchez
Man City: Silva, Toure | Aguero
West Ham: Adrian | Cresswell | Antonio, Lanzini, Payet
Man United: De Gea | Rojo, Smalling | Lingard | Martial, Rashford
Liverpool: Mignolet | Moreno, Sakho, Skrtel | Coutinho, Milner | Sturridge
West Brom: Foster | Dawson | Rondon
    Everton: Lukaku
    Watford:Gomes | Ake | Deeney, Ighalo
    Crystal Palace: Cabaye
    Newcastle: Elliot | Wijnaldum

    By position:
GK: Adrian, Elliot, De Gea, Foster, Gomes, Mignolet
DEF: Ake, Bellerin, Cresswell, Koscielny, Moreno, Rojo, Sakho, Skrtel, Smalling
MID: Antonio, Cabaye, Coutinho, Lanzini, Lingard, Milner, Ozil, Payet, Sanchez, Silva, Toure, Wijnaldum
FOR: Aguero, Deeney, Ighalo, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, Rondon, Sturridge

For some teams I included both goakeepers and defenders (such as Watford, West Brom). You could select either a goalkeeper or a defender depending on your teams needs. I don't expect the difference to be that big (except when a GK suddenly stops a penalty and outperforms his whole defence.

Other players such as Cech and Firmino are injured and therefore didn't make the list. I avoided Sturridge because he is fairly expensive, injury prone and therefore subject to rotation. If he is on penalties (I just realize this now), he might warrant selection. I added him to the list since I am already considering him right now, haha.

What do you think? Is this list fairly complete? Did I include players who shouldn't be in the list (Cabaye comes to mind)? Should I include an Crystal Palace / Everton goalkeeper or defender, or am I right in ignoring them? Let me hear your thought and comments below, I appreciate it.

Remove Rojo, Lingard and Moreno for starters. Not 100% nailed.

Also, I'd consider Bolasie before Cabaye, but realistically neither as they play Arsenal and Man Utd away.

Players in: Lennon Sagna, Zaha/bolasie firmino

          Thanks. I appreciate it.

I forgot about Lennon, he has been doing allright and is cheaper than Barkley. He even got some goals.

Zaha hasn't got enough end product for me.

Sagna is a no go for me with Zaba fit and the City defence decimated. As long as Demichelis is playing I will stay far away from their defence.

Firmino is injured, otherwise I would have included him for sure.

      2. Daaf

I agree that they are not 100% nailed on, but I would say it's closer to 100% than to 50%. I do believe they are all first choice. Whether they would play both games in a double game week I don't know. I'll give you that.

With your other comment I agree fully. I went for Cabaye because of set-pieces, direct free kicks and penalties. I suppose you are right. I should have left them both out entirely or included Bolasie.

He is the more stable presence in their defence, I will give you that. With Skrtel at 5.3 and Clyne at 5.2 you may have a point. We all know that Moreno is mostly miss, and not that much hit. It's mostly wishful thinking and the law of averages that lead me to consider him. And he is still stuck in my team :S

As an Arsenal supporter I know he is nailed on and is called Mr Consistent for a reason. Gibbs provides decent competition and I can see Wenger rotating him in one of those games. I think that's somewhat less likely to happen to Koscielny and Bellerin.

There is no way to know for sure, so fair point for bringing him up.

    Wildcard Budget Enablers:

    [Def] Flanagan - Liverpool - 4.4m

Recently signed a new contract and given the armband by Klopp. Seems like he could become a favorite and expect plenty of gametime being fresh after spell out. Crucially also not registered in Europa League squad. A cheap way in to a team with great fixtures, threat of rotation but much cheaper than the likes of Sakho, Clyne etc. Prospect = 7/10

    [Mid] Iwobi - Arsenal - 4.5m

Burst onto the scene recently, looked lively away to Barcelona and grabbed a goal away to Everton. Three Arsenal players look essential, with Bellerin and Ozil/Sanchez locked in most squads, Iwobi could become a great third enabler. Recently got the backing of Henry and crucially Wenger's as well. Threat of rotation once more, but a great price and looks a sturdy player. Prospect = 7/10

    [Str] Rashford - Man Utd - 4.5m

Started and starred in some key games recently. LVG showing a lot of faith in him, and looks to be a real option for United's extremely appealing GW34 fixtures at home to Wba and Palace. People worried about Rooney's return, I'm thinking the opposite. Both could well play in the same team and in fact Rooney could even help Rashford, with Rooney playing deeper and taking away markers for Rashford to exploit. An option definitely worth exploring over Lingard. Prospect = 9/10

With 1, 2 or even all 3 of the above in the squad, even low value teams can then build a decent core of players [Bellerin, Smalling, Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Aguero etc.] and possibly leaving money in the bank for Rashford >>> Kane for GW35. Food for Thought.

I don't think any of those will play both games in a DGW.

Flanno only got armband because Hendo and Milner were out, he will rotate with Moreno.

Iwobi is young and can't see AW starting him every game

Rooney could be back soon and we don't know what that means for Rash, he is only in team because they have no one else

You could argue he's played himself into the team with match winning goals against Arsenal and City.

Think Klopp may well prefer Flanagan over Moreno. Moreno to get Europe games.

Wenger obviously trusts Iwobi enough to start successive away games against Barca and Everton. Think he could well be the surprise package, similar to when Coquelin broke in the squad.

Yes, Rooney is a massive uncertanity at the moment but Rashford is ahead of Depay and playing very well.

Depends on your selling value. The more money you got, the higher the ceiling on the enablers you need. For me, my budget enabler will likely be Elliot, a Simpon hold, and a $7-$8M (sorry no pound sign on my American keyboard) forward. Of course, if Rashford is nailed by the time we are finalizing our gw33 wc teams, then dang, what an enabler that would be.

Annoying thing is that Villa actually has got some very good elements in it. The midfield is pretty decent in fact, and they don't play _that_ bad in whole. All they need is a seriously first rate forward and a completely new defence. Well, apart from LB, where they've got Amavi, that's another hapless fellow who must sit on sidelines to watch his idiotic team mates to take him down to the Championship. Chances are he won't go there, though, and then they need a new LB too. I mean, seriously, Hutton, Richardson, Guzan et al. will be relegation material even in the Championship.

Short term, wildcarding in GW33. Should also have mentioned I own Sanchez as well.

Anyone know when the final fixture will be announced? (eve, cpl)

It makes a fair difference really to our plans.

      WC options:

      A) DDG, Clyne (DDG requires blank cover, currently that's Schmeichel)

      OR

      B) Mignolet, Darmian (Mig has no blanks, can therefore have a cheap second keeper to free up cash)

hmm, maybe, but I already have Fuchs, Mahrez and Vardy so not really an option unless I do Vardy to *someone*

Siggy: for those of use who went sig C, those 11 pts btn Sig C and Kane C are quite big at this stage of the season in breaking ground. shame i changed last min to siggie. cant win them all.

Choose one punt for the week:

      1) Siggy -> Fabregas (Bench Alli)
      2) Bertrand -> Bellerin/Chelsea Defender?
