Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery – Part One

Welcome to the first of our Rate My Wildcard Team articles of the week. These will showcase the thoughts of one of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors team on their wildcard. Hopefully some of their key issues will mirror your own. Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues. I’ve picked the short straw to start the first discussion.

My Wildcard Team

Mignolet Robles

Bellerin Gabriel Sakho Jagielka  Ward

De Bruyne Sanchez Lingard Coutinho Payet

Mitrovic Lukaku Aguero

0.2m in the bank

Strategy

I’m currently keeping a close eye on price changes and drafting in players I’m considering as they expect to rise and ditching those set for a fall. As it stands Harry Kane, Riyad Mahrez and Christian Fuchs are in my squad but some if not all of them will depart.

Above is the option I’m considering the most, going all out with  15 double players in double Gameweek 34, having three Everton and one Palace player in place for double Gameweek 33 and for double Gameweek 35 I’ve nine players with two transfers to take me to 11. I’m fine taking a hit if an injury lets me down here. I also have six players in place for double Gameweek 37 with  a view to fielding 10 to 11 with a hit that Gameweek.

My bench boost will be played in double Gameweek  34 and triple captaincy in double Gameweek 37.

Key issues

Dropping Kane

Given the high price tags of Kevin De Bruyne, Alexis Sanchez, Liverpool midfielders plus Arsenal’s key defender Hector Bellerin, as well as Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane looks unsustainable. Going without him scares me but to put him in I have to make sacrifices across my whole team. I may very well get him back in for Gameweek 35 though if he punishes me too much. However, if dropping Kane for double Gameweeks 33 and 34 I can be safe in the knowledge that no one will captain him. Shunning Kane also allows for De Bruyne, who looked sharp against Bournemouth and has a great home tie in Gameweek 33, certainly on paper more enticing than Kane’s match up with Van Gaal’s all out defence tactics.

Sanchez over Ozil

Alexis Sanchez looks not only to have won this battle but looks to be the best captaincy pick for double Gameweek 34. I’ve seen enough, he’s in my team.

Punting on Mitrovic

I’ve also seen enough of Newcastle to know that they only have one strategy – get the ball to Alexsandar Mitrovic’s head. With two home games I’m hoping (praying) he can outscore Kane. This is a very rare maverick decision for me and I’m getting scared already thinking of being without Harry.

Ignoring Manchester Utd Defenders

Having no Manchester United defender in particular worries me with two great home games. But none are nailed on except David De Gea and the over priced Chris Smalling. De Gea is an option, but requires surgery in Gameweek 35 when I have no goalies. Jesse Lingard looks to be my only Man Utd player.

Jagielka to fly the dullard flag

If I’m not going to get James Milner then Phil Jagielka is the next best thing for this dullard. Members may note though that in terms of goal attempts he may offer some surprises during the doubles.

Leaving Leicester alone

Of my soon to be ditched Leicester pair of Mahrez and Fuchs it is the defender that worries me the most. Offloading Fuchs’ almost now guaranteed clean sheets and bonus each game will be a wrench. He is also outscoring Mahrez on current form. If any single gameweekers stay he is in pole position.

    Simpson Bellerin Gabriel Ward Sakho
    Barkley Coutinho Payet KDB Sanchez
    Martial Kun Lukaku

    GW34 BB + Barkley > Lingard/Iwobi
    GW35 Lingard/Iwobi + Martial > Some Combo of Mahrez/Vardy/Alli/Eriksen/Kane -4

Great article, hope it's still active in here. Thoughts on the below much appreciated:

    Robles. Darlow
    Bellerin. Gabriel. Moreno. Delaney. Simpson
    Sanchez. DeBruyne. Coutinho. Payet. Lingard
    Augero. Lukaku. Kane

    0.3 ITB.

Defence is a bit light and not a fan of Lingard. Maybe need to lose one of Kane or KDB to improve other areas?

I have looked at something similar. I'm keen on having your first choice front 7, which means we have no choice but to go for Lingard. Problem is it makes for a weak defence.

Gabriel is a slight rotation risk, Moreno is a rotation risk, Delaney isn't a great option and neither is Darlow.

The only other option for me is downgrading Kane and getting a defence that looks more like:

      De Gea Darlow
      Smalling Monreal Gabriel Sakho Simpson

I might consider going Robles and Darlow and doing Robles -> De Gea after GW33.

The big plus here is 2 nailed united defenders as opposed to none.

        It's basically a question of

        A) Kane + 2 shi**y defenders + Lingard
        B) Mitrovic + 2 nailed united defenders + Lanzini

    Anyone around for some critique?

    Team 1
    Ddg/Darlow
    Bellerin/Gabriel/Sahko/Moreno/Delaney
    Sanchez/Kdb/Payet/Cout/Lennon
    Aguero/Lukaku/Martial(benching in 33)

    Team 2
    Roebles/Migs
    Bellerin/Gabriel/Delaney/Smalling/Simpson
    Sanchez/Kdb/Payet/Cout/Lanzini
    Aguero/Lukaku/Martial(benching in 33)

    Main differences:
    - Ddg/Darlow V Roebles/Migs (rotates/most games/Migs for 35)
    - Sahko/Moreno V Smalling/Simpson (plays 35)
    - Lennon V Lanzini (Lanzini dgw in 37 too)

    Any preferences?
I think I've my mind made up but I'd like 1/2 opinions if anyone is around,
    Thanks.

i feel like the Pool Double D is a risk. especially as Moreno is likely to be rotated. If you were going to do a DD then it would have to be Migs/Sakho or Clyne.

So for that reason Team Two.

    Any advice for this team:

    Hennessey, Foster

    Bellerin, Fuchs, Moreno, Jagielka, Gabriel

    Mahrez, Bolasie, Sanchez, Barkley, Lingard

    Aguero, Lukaku, Sturridge.

1.8 in the bank, thinking Hennessey - DDG gw 34.

Think too top heavy. Would downgrade Sturridge and take a liv mid and a better goalkeeper. Money in bank would be helpful come week 35 (albeit I won't have any...)

    Robles Mignolet
    Darmian Gabriel Sakho Azpili Simpson
    Sanchez Coutinho Silva Payet Lanzini
    Aguero Lukaku Defoe

1.5 ITB - to be used for Kane in GW35

Considered Mitrovic, but not sold on playing time...and I wouldn't start him in 34 anyway

With FTs I'll be covered for full team of doubles an TC in 34, full team 35, full team doubles 37

I could do, yeah. The reason I haven't is exactly that double in 37. I thought about doubling on Arsenal, but I don't really need an extra double in 34 as I'm playing TC rather than BB.

BB in 37, means as many doubles as possible....so I was quite happy having a full 11 with doubles 34 and having Azpili on the bench for his double. Also, has the added bonus of having that second double as well as playing in 35.

        If that makes sense?

Maybe Azpili isn't the best shout, their double isn't easy...but it's finding someone with a 37 double and a fixture in 35....and I came to him. Only Chelsea and Sunderland...and obviously going to favour Chelsea there.

Another option is Mignolet to Darlow and Azpili to Bellerin...which sounds great in the short term, but means losing 2 doubles for 37.

the consensus seems to be Darmian is a rotation/substitution risk.

But I'm trying to decide if I'm going to take it as well or do surgery to get in DDG - feels like a ManU D for DGW34 is a must.

Yeah, my thoughts too. Out of United's defenders, it's Smalling all day long if you can afford him. If not then I think Darmian is next best shout - he's been featuring more consistently and performing well of late. Would love to have the money for Smalling though.

Right - I have only posted a couple of times... but this wildcard thingy is causing me to wake up at 3am and ponder my decision.... and they are only small tinkerings...... Wilcard is active (building for GW34, TC but no bench boost - so only 11 dgw are needed)
I currently will have Robles, Barkley in there this week33 then shipping them out for a 4pt hit (im 71pts ahead in my mini league and the closest chaser has no wildcard to play, has a TC, but has currenly only 3 dgw34 players in his squad - so I'm hoping to truly put the mini league to bed at the end of the big dgw)

I have in anticipation of gwk34 ... (after Robles to Hart and Barkley to Payet)

    Hart (Robles)
    Bellerin, Darmian, Sakho (Simpson, Smith)
Ozil, Sanchez TC, Payet, Lingaard (Mahrez)
    Lukaku, Martial, Aguero

My small tinkering is also hedging me 50/50 to change to this instead (though I could keep Sakho ahead of Gabriel providing no price hikes hit me on De Bruyne or Mignolet)

    Mignolet* (Robles)
    Bellerin, Darmian, Gabriel* (Simpson, Smith)
De Bruyne*, Sanchez TC, Payet, Lingaard (Mahrez)
    Lukaku, Martial, Aguero

    Pros/Cons?
For gw33 De Bruyne over Ozil would be favourable, but so would Sakho over Gabriel. Though I wont have Payet in my team for this week.

Harts fitness should be more clear by end gw33.

De Bruyne... lack of minutes? Champs League games and returning from injury - also Chelsea game probably wont spark lots of goals.
Ozil, will no doubt get close to 180 mins in the dgw and I expect Arsenal to score a couple minimum in each game.

Gabriel - rotation risk... or is he? Sakho im 90% confident will play both.

Mignolet - a certainty. But maybe only one clean sheet, certainly not two.
So don't really want to double up on Liverpool defence.

Any expert minds out there, offer any thoughts!?

I've bit the bullet already and ditched Kane and Alli - mainly due to me thinking their games wont feature a lot of goals in the run in. Can always bring Kane back (0.4 hit) or transfer Mahrez to Alli as Leicesters games toughen up.

          1) thanks - didn't realise I could do that
          2) I cant as I have 3 arsenal in both teams already....
          3) id need to save over a million on them. Darlow is cheapest around so would mean me having a 4.4mill first choice keeper if i downgrade hart

The thing is,if they're both nailed on I'd rather have Gabriel & a lot of people on here think he is, the threat of Merts bothers me tho. I'd go with whoever is more likely to play 120 mins. I've gone Sakho as General concensus on here seems to be that he's nailed & played it safe with Kos & Bellerin.

I'd love someone to convince me to do Kos -> Gabriel, frees up so much cash!

    Robles/Migs
    Bellerin, Gabriel, Clyne, Delaney, Morgan
    Payet, Sanchez, Coutinho, Mahrez, Bolasie
    Aguero, Martial, Lukaku

GW 34 Bolasie out for Lingard
GW 35 Martial out for Kane and -4 for Delaney out to PvA

Don't want Bolasie long term but punt on his games in 33 seem worth it. Lingard has better double in 34.

I'm uncomfortable about going with Martial over Kane long term, but happy to run risk for Utd 34 doubles. Seems illogical?? Also uncomfortable about no Leicester cover so keeping Mahrez. The -4 gets me 11 players in 35 and a PvA good for 37 doubles.

I like the idea of getting Klose in, cheap and he looks pretty good, but only for GW 37. I think ive got a good one....thoughts:

    de Gea, robles
    Sakho, delaney, Gabriel, Simpson, Bellerin
    Lanzini, Sanchez, KDB,Payet,Coutinho,
    Kun, Kak, Martial

No keeper in 35 but can field 10 outfield no hits. Seems a price worth paying to me as De Gea is only Man U defense I can trust and afford

It's a strong team! I just don't know about KDB's playing time (I appreciate the strong fixtures in 33 and 35). Doubt you will go far wrong with this thiugh

    Guys

I'm down to Kane v KDB but getting the latter would require a slight reshuffle in my defence. Could I please get some opinions and reasoning:

Option 1 (current - 13 Dow): Mignolet, Smalling, Clichy, Mahrez, Kane

Option 2: De Gea, Clyne, Simpson, KDB, Martial

Will be able to field 11 with two frees regardless in gw35.

    Thanks!

      Think i'd go 1.
Mahrez and kane are proven over the whole season.
Not too sure why but i have reservations over "Tony Marshall".
How happy are you with Clichy's game time? He's flown under my radar.

Thanks for the input. Clichy has missed one in the last 9 prem (he was subbed a couple of times towards the end of games) - so looks fairly nailed.

I have the same issue with KDB with ECL game time and just coming back, etc but think Clichy is more set

Im going KDB against Baggies in 33 then Sanchez for 34 onwards. Hoping KDB will do me good in the likely reduced minutes he gets. I'm not worrying overall points. just minileague dominance!!

Yea I commented below but kdb to Sanchez sounds like a plan. Think KDB will play vs WBA.

I'm up to 2.5k and well ahead in ML so need a strong wildcard to break into the top end - I think Kane has more to play for, the form and is unstoppable so will probs go with him!

I'm sure i could do better, but how...?

    DDG(Migs in 35) - Hennesey

Monreal - Bellerin - Fuchs - Ward - Target (hoping to get lucky in 35!)

    Payet - Tinho - Barkley - KDB (sanchez in & TC 34) - Wanyama

    Kun - Kaku - Kane

Don't want to ditch Kane, he can outscore any doublegameweeker and covers my mini league well. So sacrifices have bean made.
Not 100% on barkley but with Barry coming back should be thrown farward again and has somthing to prove to Woy Hodgson.

Can i do any better than Wanyama? He's only in for his price and makes my 10th man in 35, assuming Target (enabler) plays.

Yeah this is my WC team. Activated it this week.

Hadn't looked at Lingard. assumed he was well over that price. More homework need i think!
Would mean dropping Fuchs or ward in 34 for him, which wouldnt be too painful, still leaves me short in 35 tho.

WC team (activating next week for GW 34 and then BBing) leaves 0.5 itb

    Mignolet (Darlow)
    Belerin, Smalling, Sakho, Clichy (Ake)
    Payet, Sanchez, KDB, Coutinho (Lingard)
    Kane, Welbeck, Martial

    - Obviosuly the major flaw is up front. No Aguero (but I think KDB is good cover) and no Lukaku (but will have for GW33 and his form hasn't been great of late). They simply take up too much money and negatively impact the rest of the team.
    - Will make 2FTs in GW35 (Smalling and Martial most likely) to field 11.

    Constructively criticise away!

Sorry if you already know this but you do know you can't play two chips in the same week? So you'd have to WC this week (33) to BB in 34? You say you're making 2 FT in 35 so I'm hoping you already so I'm hoping you already know this!

The team looks good. I think I'd prefer Mangala to Clichy. Only he has a lower risk of being rotated. Welbeck is also a gamble with Giroud and Wally looming

Here's my proposed draft wildcard. I've been working on it for about 14 hours now and the following would include 0.7 ITB:

    Mignolet, de Gea
    Bellerin, Sahko, Gabriel, Mangala, Janmaat
    Coutinho, Lennon, Lingard, Sanchez, KDB
    Aguero, Lukaku, Mitrovic

    GW33 - 2 DGW Players
GW34 - 15 DGW Players with Bench Boost
    GW35 - 11 Players. Sell 1 ARS/WBA/NEW/MCI and Buy 1 CHE/SUN.
    GW36 - Buy 1 EVE/CPL/WAT/WHM/MAN/CHE/SUN/NOR.
    GW37 - BUY 2 EVE/WAT/WHM/MAN/CHE/SUN/NOR. 11 DGW players with Triple Captain.

Problems I see are Lingard getting rotated and then not having enough cash to buy players like Payet or Wilian for the DWG in GW37 without having to see 1 of my more expensive players and taking a hit. This is a result of owning Aguero pretty much.

Players that I have thought about including in my wildcard but have not yet made the cut are Firminio, Payet, Jagielka, Dann, Bolasie, Smalling, Lanzini, Dann, Darlow, Kosceilny.

I'm 14,746 overall and just 28 points ahead of everyone else in my mini league at work.

Looks a strong team and plan.

Possibly a bit too much cash tied up with goalies. Plus they both have a DGW37 so who would you play?? Maybe downgrade Mignolet to Darlow and upgrade Lingard to Lanzini?

I'm thinking Bellerin to Azpil in 35? You'll still have an Arsenal defender for the Sunderland game but then also a Chelsea player against Bournemouth as well as having a future DGW.

You'll probably have to lose a big gun for DGW37, but that player will have a DGW and there will be only 2 gameweeks left! You can always save the transfer in 36 so keeping the big guns for 36, then remove two players for 2 DGW players?

        Hi Villan!

Thanks so much for your reply. I am going crazy with my selection plan and struggling to get 11 DGW players in GW37 if I have 15 DGW players in GW34 and 11 SGW players in GW35. Mainly because I have both de Gea and Mignolet in my squad as you mention. Should I select another player from another team for my goalkeeper to allow me to get 15 DWG players in GW34, 11 SGW in GW35 and 11 DGW in GW37? I am awful at puzzles!

I can afford Lanzini from the start with my 0.7 ITB if I swap out Lingard but I thought Lingard's fixtures in GW34 of AVL and CPL at home would be worth it whilst West Ham play ARS in GW33 and lei/WAT in GW34. I would then seek to bring in Payet once their fixtures ease from GW36 onwards for his DWG in GW37. I assume Lingard will start all his games of course and wonder about the chances of his be rotated.

In GW35 I was thinking of selling Janmaat for Baba Rahman cos he is the only Chelsea defender I could afford.

In GW36 I would sell Mitrovic for Deeney who has 3 great games weeks of GW36 AVL, GW37 liv/nor and GW38 of SUN.

He is my current squad plan:

        GW33 = WC
        Mignolet, de Gea
        Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho, Janmaat, Otamendi
Sanchez, Coutinho, De Bruyne, Lennon DGW, Lingard
        Aguero, Lukaku DWG, Mitrovic

        GW34 = Roll 1FT. Bench Boost. 15 DGW.
        Mignolet, de Gea
        Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho, Janmaat, Otamendi
Sanchez, Coutinho, De Bruyne, Lennon, Lingard
        Aguero, Lukaku, Mitrovic

        GW35 = 2FT. Sell 1 ARS/WBA/NEW/MCI: Janmaat. Buy 1 CHE/SUN: Baba Rahman who play BOU.
        Mignolet, de Gea
Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho, Baba Rahman, Otamendi
Sanchez, Coutinho, De Bruyne, Lennon, Lingard
        Aguero, Lukaku, Mitrovic

        GW36 = 2FT. Sell Mitrovic. Buy 1 EVE/CPL/WAT/WHM/MAN/CHE/SUN/NOR: Deeney who play AVL.
        Mignolet, de Gea
Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho, Baba Rahman, Otamendi
Sanchez, Coutinho, De Bruyne, Lennon, Lingard
        Aguero, Lukaku, Deeney

GW37= 2FT. Sell KDB, Aguero. BUY 2 EVE/WAT/WHM/MAN/CHE/SUN/NOR: Payet, Rooney.
        Mignolet DGW, de Gea DGW
Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho DGW, Baba Rahman DGW, Otamendi
Sanchez, Coutinho DGW, Payet DGW, Lennon DGW, Lingard DGW
Rooney DGW, Lukaku DGW, Deeney DGW

        GW38
        Mignolet, de Gea
Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho, Baba Rahman, Otamendi
        Sanchez, Coutinho, Payet, Lennon, Lingard
