The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 35 – The Midfield

After rolling out our preferred picks in defence for the remaining four rounds of fixtures, we focus our thoughts on the centre of the park. Alexis Sanchez keeps his place at the summit thanks to both form and a security of starts, whilst Liverpool and City’s European commitments and potential rotation over the run-in also plays a major part in our thinking.

With four goals and two assists in his last five appearances, Alexis Sanchez remains at the top of our refresh. Arsenal’s lack of cup commitments over the run-in ensures that the Chilean is a nailed-on starter for the final four Gameweeks in a run that hands them showdowns with three (sun, NOR, mci, AVL) of the bottom four.

Whilst Mesut Ozil offers a similar security of starts, there’s no doubts that the German has struggled for form and has produced one goal in six ahead of tonight’s showdown with West Brom. Elsewhere at the Emirates, Alex Iwobi offers a viable budget route into Arsene Wenger’s attack. The 4.6-priced youngster has started each of the last four now and racked up two goals and a couple of assists over that period – he does remain a slight rotation risk, though, which may deter many from investing at a time where opting for nailed-on starters is key over the run-in.

Certainly, there’s no question marks over Dele Alli’s security of pitch time. The Spurs midfielder severely punished those who sold him ahead of double Gameweek 34 by bagging a brace away to Stoke on Monday evening and has racked up three goals and a trio of assists in his last five matches. Still priced at a very generous 6.1, Alli has the form to keep on delivering over the final four (WBA, che, SOU, new) as Mauricio Pochettino’s men chase Leicester down at the summit.

Liverpool pair Philippe Coutinho (8.3) and Roberto Firmino (8.1) both bagged a goal apiece over the double Gameweek to maintain their fine recent form. Although the Reds now have a superb run of fixtures remaining (NEW, swa, WAT & CHE, wba), the upcoming Europa League semi-final dates against Villarreal will surely play a major part in Jurgen Klopp’s domestic team sheets. The first leg takes place five days after this weekend’s home match with Newcastle and three days before the trip to Swansea, whilst the second leg occurs four days after their Liberty clash and three days before the home match against Watford, which is the first of their double Gameweek 37 fixtures.

Coutinho has scored in each of his last three starts but bearing in mind he has been rested for two of the last three league matches, there still has to be concerns over his pitch time. Firmino, who has bagged an impressive eight goals and four assists in his last 11, has started each of the last three since recovering from injury and if Divock Origi is ruled out with an ankle injury sustained against Everton last night, there’s a chance he could be utilised as a false nine if Klopp looks to manage Daniel Sturridge’s minutes. Whilst the Liverpool midfielders have plenty of upside, then, the risk of rest and rotation still hangs heavy over Anfield.

City’s Kevin de Bruyne (10.4) is also lower down in our refresh for similar reasons. The Belgian was benched in Gameweek 33 ahead of the Champions League quarter-final against PSG and with the likes of Raheem Sterling, and possibly Samir Nasri, back in contention, there’s a fear that his minutes will be managed as Manuel Pellegrini targets Europe in his final few fixtures at the helm. De Bruyne’s single assist in the last three also makes his 10.4 price tag a little prohibitive, with many preferring Sergio Aguero as their only source of City attacking coverage for the final four (STO, sou, ARS, swa) Gameweeks.

With a pair of home matches against Swansea and United in double Gameweek 37, the 8.5-priced Dimitri Payet cannot be overlooked. West Ham face a blank this week and have trips to West Brom and Stoke on either side of the double, which sees the Hammers play at Upton Park for the final time before moving grounds. Although Slaven Bilic’s side boast a significant threat in the final third, scoring at least twice in each of their last six, the attacking returns have dried up for Payet of late. Indeed, he’s played a part in just three of their last 12 goals and served up no more than an assist for double Gameweek 34 – food for thought for those considering handing him the armband for the penultimate round of matches.

Two goals and a pair of assists in his last four appearances highlights Andros Townsend’s recent improvement. The 5.7-priced wide man has served up 29 points over that period and those who snapped him up for double Gameweek 34 may well look to hold for the remainder of the campaign. The Magpies’ appeal is boosted by a Gameweek 35 fixture (albeit a trip to Liverpool) and ensuing showdowns with Palace and Villa offer further reason for optimism.

Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek could also be one to consider. Although Guus Hiddink has chopped and changed his team sheet in recent matches, the youngster has started each of the last three in a central support role and bagged a goal against Villa in Gameweek 32. With five fixtures in the final four (bou, TOT, sun & liv, LEI), he could prove to be a decent budget enabler at a price of just 4.6.

    These moves sounds okay?

    Lukaku ----> Pelle
    Jagielka -----> Walker
    Lanzini ----> Townsend

Will do Pelle to Carroll for the DGW and maybe swap Coutinho for Firmino as well

    Current forward 8:

    Sanchez Iwobi Coutinho Payet* Nasri*
    Aguero Vardy* Martial*

    Which is better?

    A- Vardy + Coutinho > Kane + Alli (-4)
    B- Vardy + Martial > Kane + Defoe (-4)
    C- Vardy + Coutinho + Nasri (if not fit)/Payet > Kane + Mane + Alli (-8)
    D- Vardy + Martial + Coutinho > Kane + Pelle + Alli. (-8)

B if you are happy with Defoe until the end of the season. I'm undecided, Sunderland aren't exactly great going forward

-4 for Barkley & Lukaku > Sanchez & Defoe would leave me with 10 players:

    (De Gea + Mccarthy blanks)
    Bellerin, Huth, Dier, Wollschield (yikes)
    Iwobi, Sanchez, Firmino
    Aguero, Kane, Defoe

My non-playing bench - Smalling, Bolasie, Payet

The two transfers would leave me with £0.7 itb -

Should i be taking a -8 to get 11? Or do i should i settle with the 10 outfield players... Also scared of Wollsch & Stoke conceding 4+.. Any thoughts/ideas/alternative/additional transfers? (WC thrown away stupidly a few months ago... woops!)

I would do those two transfers, as well as Bolasie > Alli.

Alli likely to make up the hit straight away, but even if he blanks you will still only lose 2 points. Well worth it imo

Feel like I was receiving a few "lol @"s this week as a Sanchez captainer. But a brace for Alexis against West Brom wouldn't be completely unimaginable, and that could put him on 25 points for the gameweek, 2 less than Aguero...

Who to get rid of my non-playing players?

    Robles
    DDG
    Smalling
    Lanzini
    Martial
    Carroll

Only need 2 transfers to field 11. Weakest links are Martial and Robles (and maybe lanzini?) but who to get at that price range? Would like Kane and/or Alli back, but tough to afford them...

Leaves me with 4.2, so could get a playing defender (just).

Have never been even close to top 1K. What makes the difference between player ranked top 1k and 2-10K? What am I doing wrong or what are those top 1K players doing differently? I have tried to play safe and not take hits season and still not even close to that elite group

Your at 4k now, a lot nearer to 1k than 10k.. Score well until the end of the season and I can't see why you wouldn't be close.

I'm at 9k after this week (Dropped from 5k) and still hope to finish nearer to 1k than 10k.

Its easier to move from 10K to 4K than from 4k to 1K.

        1. elcholo

I don't think it's about taking risks, just making the right calls (which always involves some luck). I moved from 4k to 1k just this week (on 142 points), so it's not a huge gap.

        2. GoonerByron
          • 12 Years
          8 years, 15 days ago

There's about 40 points seperating you from 1k.. With 35 and a DGW left to come it's possible.

To be in the Top 10k I don't think you need to take more risks.. As said above it's mostly down to luck, more risks and you're just as likely to end up a lot further behind.. If there were 4 million players,4k is already in the top 0.1% of players!

Pulling off a couple of differentials early and well without making too many. It gives you variance against the 10K to get lucky. Also makes you more susceptible to dropping to 20K. Also nailing defenders.

No that's pretty usual. For every time your captain blanks or gets 6 you'll have someone in your squad on double digits. for instance, Williams and Bellerin have had a few hauls but we'd never captain them realistically.

Don't really fancy any MF options from Sunderland or Chelsea. Otherwise I'd consider getting rid of Lanzini this week.

It's pretty much Alli or Erikson for me as the standout MF picks for this week

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 15 days ago

The other option is to go back to Alli at that price range.

    1. transfering out ozil and martial for kane and alli
    2. transfering out payet and martial for kane and alli

      2

Weeks away from that, but Kane, Defoe, Carroll, Agüero, Sturridge are on my list.

If you don't need Ozil this week, then it seems better to keep Payet for DGW37. But if you are going to sell Ozil and not have 11 for GW35, then obviously sell Payet

    in my ML :

#1 - 2003 pts - no chips left - no players left this GW
    #2 - 1985 pts - no chips left - 2 WBA + Alexis [C]/Koscielny
    #3 - 1973 pts - no chips left - Alexis today
    #4 (me) - 1951 pts - TC left - Alexis[C], Iwobi, Bellerin

Nasri...keep or sell? He looked good when he played but his injury is a concern as is rotation.

Contemplating Martial and Nasri > Kane and Alli.

Alternative could do Martial and Lanzini > Pelle and Alli?

Pellegrini presser tomorrow should give you some news on that.

Kane should be priority, Pelle is only a one week punt.

9 players (if I'm really lucky) this coming GW..
Sakho, Coutinho, Rojo with rotation concerns.
Martial, Lanzini on the firing line too possibly..

    Mignolet
    Sakho, Bellerin, Simpson
    Sanchez, Coutinho, Iwobi
    Kane, Aguero

Robles, Martial, Payet, Reid, Lanzini, Rojo
    3.2m, 1ft..

Which 2 moves would u make?
    Lanzini- Alli (Maybe Coutinho instead)
Then either Martial or Rojo out.. not sure for who though.

Hey i was just following Balders' lead.

Also, Kuqi, Balders has a great point. Play your own game. Don't play the community game.

I always have a few punts different from the community.

I should probably trust more my own judgement. I tend to pay too much attention on other players opinion.

Great example was Mahrez. I scouted him at pre season and but didn't eventually get him for gw1 because ffs community told me him being bad option.

Bit stuck - not averse to a -8, worried about Pool and City rotation

    Thoughts?

    Roblow
    Bellerin Gabriel Sakho Lovren Simpson
    Sanchez Payet KDB Lanzini Coutinho
    Kun Lukaku Martial

    0.7m ITB

    a) Martial & Kaku > Kane & Defoe (-4)
    b) Martial & Coutinho > Kane & Alli (-4)
    c) a + Couts > Alli (-8)

    Afternoon, peeps!

Anyone care to give this a thought? Quite confused about what I should do.

    Robles Darlow
    Lovren Bellerin Gabriel Fosu-Mensah Delaney
    Sanchez Coutinho Firmino Payet Bolasie
    Agüero Lukaku Mitrovic

    1 FT, 1,4 ITB

Got nothing to fight for in the mini-league and overall having a poor season so willing to take hits. Looking to break into the top 100k at least though.

I guess Bolasie and Delaney should go at least.

    Any suggestions?

Bolasie > Alli (Mane for 1 week)
      Lukaku > Kane
      Mitrovic > Defoe / (Long/ Pelle for 1 week)
      Delaney > Walker

pick as many as you want, and depending on $
