Dugout Discussion – Southampton v Man City

In Gameweek 36’s penultimate head-to-head, Southampton and Manchester City cross swords at St Mary’s Stadium. Saints’ only loss in their previous seven fixtures came at the hands of the league leaders, while the Sky Blues are in the midst of a five-match unbeaten streak.

Southampton found their attacking groove in their previous quartet of outings, placing fifth for attempts (65), top for shots inside the box (46) and second for big chances (11). The fact that they also rank fourth for goals (31) and shots inside the box (174) in home fixtures highlights the challenge faced by the visitors’ backline. On the flip side, the Sky Blues will be boosted by the fact that Aston Villa scored twice against Saints last time out.

Man City will arrive at the south coast with an air of confidence, having recorded the second-most goals (10) and second-best shot-conversion rate (22.7%) across their previous four outings. At the other end of the pitch, the Sky Blues conceded the joint-fewest goals (two), third-fewest shots inside the box (22) and joint-fourth-fewest big chances (four), which suggests a sixth clean sheet in nine match-ups could be on the cards.

Gambling is a dangerous addiction, my uncle was killed in a betting shop which collapsed and left him pinned against a wall by a slab of betting slips. Medics tried to save him but the odds were stacked against him.

Expect him to start hopefully now that Merts is out

I've taken 24 points of hits from GW34 to GW37, having to clean up the mess of the GW33 wildcard. In that time I have somehow still gone from 30K to 10K, and my team is as well set up for DGW37 as I would be with a wildcard. Sometimes hits can pay off 🙂

    1. fickle
      • 8 Years

Obviously I would have preferred not to have screwed up the wildcard, but it shows you can recover from really tricky positions if you take sensible hits.

This week it was Defoe and Payet, the -8 kind of cancels out the real benefit of their scores from this week but it means I have the DGW set up nicely without further hits. Other ones previously were Firmino and Smalling.

My best players have been ones I had anyway though (Sanchez, Aguero etc) but the players I've brought in have helped me replace guys like Barkley, Lukaku, Darmian and co without effectively losing ground had I kept them and saved the hit.

It really is ridiculous from the likes of Aguero, KDB, etc not able to play two games in a week. You never see the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Suarez etc being rested in games even before UCL games (barring injuries of course).

That's what the best players in the world do. They play every game.

Can you guys rate my defence and give some opinions ? I have "DGWers", with massive risk.

    Clyne, lovren, fosumensah with two

    Bellerin/Gabriel with one.

Seems a shame to use 4 or 8 point hit on them, but they could get 1 or 2 points at best !!

I'm fine with changing midfield and forward but it's the defence that could be make or break
