Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Albania

Our Euro 2016 team analysis gets underway this morning with a look at rank outsiders Albania. Gianni de Biasi’s side open their Group A fixtures with a clash against Switzerland on Saturday June 11 at 2pm before taking on hosts France four days later (8pm) and finishing with a head-to-head with Romania on June 19 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

Albania earned their place in the final 24 as one of the best runners-up after finishing behind runaway winners Portugal. De Biasi’s side ended with 14 points, winning four times and drawing twice in a group that also contained the likes of Serbia and Denmark.

Their defence mustered four clean sheets and conceded five times, scoring on seven occasions in as many matches, though the numbers are slightly skewed as they were awarded a 3-0 win over Serbia in light of their away fixture being abandoned.

Over the past 12 months, Albania have beaten France 1-0 and Luxembourg 2-0 in friendlies and also drawn with Georgia, though lost 2-1 to Austria in late March.

Most starts Etrit Berisha, Lorik Cana, Taulant Xhaka (8), Ansi Agolli (7), Amir Abrashi, Elseid Hysaj, Burim Kukelli, Ermir Lenjani (6)

Most goals Bekim Balaj, Berat Djimsiti, Shkelzen Gashi, Armando Sadiku, Mergim Mavraj, Ermir Lenjani (1)

Most assists Amir Abrashi, Ermir Lenjani, Taulant Xhaka, Ledian Memushaj, Odise Roshi (1)

The Key Targets

It’s fair to say that Albania’s main men may struggle to persuade Fantasy managers they are worthy of consideration. As shown by the numbers above, only one player – left winger Ermir Lenjani, with a goal and assist – played a part in more than one strike over qualifying.

Lenjani (priced at 5.5 in the Uefa game) is ranked second for both attempts on goal and key passes for his country over the qualifiers and sits joint-top for shots on target. Domestically, he made 10 of his 15 starts for Nantes last season at left-back and averaged more successful crosses per appearance in Ligue 1 than any team-mate – a factor to consider for the Draft Kings game, as crosses are key to the scoring metric.

Indeed, Albania’s left flank seems their prime source of creativity. Lenjani is second to full-back Ansi Agolli for crosses and chances created, which suggests that the latter – who is also top for interceptions – may be a better bet than the highly-rated right-back Elseid Hysaj, who played all but one Serie A match for Napoli last term. Both are priced at 4.5 in Uefa, as is centre-half Mergim Mavraj, who has three goals in 30 international appearances. Hysaj does rank top for successful tackles, though, and third for interceptions, which does somewhat strengthen his Draft Kings appeal.

Biasi’s emphasis on defence meant that Albania didn’t concede a single away goal on their travels. The Group A long shots are expected to line up in a compact 4-5-1, with a 4-2-3-1 set-up perhaps more of an option should they be forced to go on the offensive. That resilience could benefit Etrit Berisha, then – he is also 4.5 in the Uefa game and started every match between the posts. It’s worth bearing in mind that keepers earn five points in Draft Kings compared to three points for defenders.

In the centre of the park, Basle’s Taulant Xhaka, brother of Arsenal target Granit, looks the man most likely to be handed dead-ball duties and is slightly cheaper than Lenjani at 5.0 in the Uefa game.

Up front, Sokol Cikalleshi offered the greatest goal threat of any Albania player over the qualifiers and was joint-top with Lenjani for efforts on target. The downside, though, is that only four of his seven appearances were starts.

The Long Shots

The versatile Shkelzen Gashi offers De Biasi an option as a central support striker or alternative to Roshi wide right and could be utilised as an option later in matches. Coming in at 6.0 in Uefa, Gashi has Champions League experience and twice finished top scorer in the Swiss top-flight with Basle. He was ranked third for efforts on goal over the qualifiers, though featured on just four occasions.

Wonderkid Milot Rashica (5.5 in Uefa) could be one to consider. Named in the provisional 27-man squad – which will be whittled down to 24 players by May 31 – he was handed his first cap in March and served up eight goals and three assists for Vitesse Arnhem last term from a role on the right. The teenager has clearly impressed his manager, who has labeled him “an extraordinary player” after last year’s breakout season.

Am I making this up or have previous versions of the McDonalds game had the player's fixture date under their name? Made it so much easier to scan and select your starting XI for the week.

Varane will definitely miss Real's Champions League final against Atletico Madrid on Saturday and faces a race against time to be fit for France's opening Euro 2016 game against Romania on June 10.

"It is sure that he will be injured for Saturday," said Zidane on Tuesday.

"I expect he will be out for two or three weeks. I hope for him it isn't as severe as anticipated.

"I hope he'll have the chance to do something at the Euros.

"For sure it is a big blow, but above all for him. I am very disappointed for him."

Sevilla defender Adil Rami was called up to Didier Deschamps squad on Monday as cover in case Varane is ruled out of the tournament.

    Anyone fancy a stats challenge?

Based on this last seasons data for shots on target and goals, I'm testing the hypothesis that goals score is a binomial distribution based on attempts (shots on target) and a success factor - 32.5% for forwards, 27% for mids, 26% for defenders. I've taken all penalties out of the equation.

The result looks like a very good fit - suspiciously so. Grouping by team and position, I'm getting chi-squared goodness of fit values [(Act-Exp)^2/Exp] of less than 2.5%

Based on a lot of the posts on here, it seems like most aren't aware that there's a wildcard available for Euro fantasy (arguably best used during group stages) nor that there is manual subs. Here's to hoping to be able to take advantage, but I will probably just crash and burn.

  15. More New Chip Ideas
    Bøwstring The Carp
    • 12 Years
    7 years, 11 months ago

Chip ideas: following on from my article I wanted to try and think of a few chip ideas that wouldn't be specifically advantageous in a DGW. AOA was a pretty useless chip, but in it held a certain beauty in the fact that it didn't need to be used in a DGW, or necessarily help out in a DGW. So many players used it at different times that was specific to their team's status (injuries, fixtures, etc)

Captain Swap: for one week, your (C) and (VC) will swap if your VC scores more than your C. [would be ideal for weeks where premium players like Aguero and Sanchez both have plum fixtures and you're unsure who will do better but I guess this could be used in a small DGW]

Transfer Window: for one week you can bring in any player on loan to your team (regardless of price or position) for a 12-man team. Obviously most would draft in a midfielder or striker to play 3-6-3 or 3-5-4 but I think it's a cool idea.

Super Subs: when played, any benched players that score higher than your fielded players will be autosubbed on. I guess in a way this is kind of like a "lesser Bench Boost" in the sense that you don't have to worry about benched points, but at the same time you won't be getting the points of 15 players, just your best 11.

Takeover: Adds 1.0m to your money ITB at any time during the season indefinitely. Could be used prior to GW1 for a good start, or maybe before one of the wildcards, or perhaps prior to GW38 for a last minute push by bringing in a player/ players you were just short of affording.

Rank Boost: This could be a risky one to play that could work one of two ways. 1) Your score for the week will be the "average". Might be good if your team is in a dreadful state and you find you have no wildcard left. Thinking for the international breaks that might incur injuries, etc. especially the February break. 2) Your score for the week is the top 10k "average". Neither might not actually result in a rank boost however depending on your rank, as the top 10,000 average could be different. Only problem this could have is how the scores of those using this chip would affect the average. Might require some sort of software from FPL to omit people using this chip from the calculated averages.

    Anyone got any other ideas?

How about "Rush Goalie" instead of AOA - basically, you can play an extra outfield player instead of a goalkeeper.

Also, a "Mulligan" where you simply reset your team to whatever you had at the end of last gameweek. You'd have to play this before the final whistle of the final game of the gameweek.

Pay 10pts to permanently reduce your squad by 1 place (you have to choose the position and cannot change your mind later).

Advantage - You have an extra 4 - 4.5M to spend on the rest of your team.

Disadvantages - You lose 10pts, have one less sub and your BB chip is less effective if you haven't already used it.

Firstly I don't think chips will go away as I'd be surprised If they did not cause an increase in engagement which is what FPL would have been looking for.

I don't think my chips turned out that well but I don't want to see them scrapped. To quote Sid Meier's who created the famous 'Civilization' video game strategy series "A game is a series of interesting choices".
It's hard to deny the chips added a lot of interesting choices for us all and thus enhanced the game which at the end of the day is what FPL is.

I didn't watch them but this article really isn't selling any of them to me. What I really liked about the World Cup game and think this one misses was a wider range of pricing. Algerians and Iranians at under £2m really made you consider them properly. Slimani at £1.5m (maybe 2m?), Bentaleb at £1m and Iranian defender at £1m were great squad fillers that gave your team some diversity. I don't think I'll have players from more than 7 squads for this game though.

Yup, there they were more appealing alternatives to fit in all the stars. However, there are less appealing stars in the Euro, and I think you're underrating Albania. Take for example their recent two matches against France. 1-0 at home, 1-1 in France. And they're having pretty much the same team, whereas France is seriously weakened from that. They're probably not going to score too much, but will defend well and have a great possibility to CS's. Agolli would profit from those while also being a main creative force on their better flank (and against probably the worse flank of their opponents). Sold to me.

Thanks Camp No No. I've got to admit I've not drafted a squad yet so I'll bear him in mind for fillers. That said, as I'm not wildcarding until the 3rd matchday I'll probably skip over him for players with better fixtures and then pick him (or a team mate) up for the Romania game in MD3 which will surely be a low scoring affair.

I don't have a team yet either. I wait until the friendlies are over and squads confirmed.

I think all Albania matches will be low scoring affairs. And that they are the one team that Romania will attack against and hence think they'll have decent chances to score against Romania. Romania will most likely be out by then, whereas I believe that Albania can draw against either France or Switzerland, even both (although Albania is a bit of Switzerland B, you may well-advised to take notes from France struggling against the France B's of Africa).

Yep, I've got general ideas on strategy and key players but there's a long way to go yet.

Remember that due to the new format with the 4 best 3rd placed teams qualifying, no team can be out before the final group game so there will still be potential qualification on the line for Albania and Romania but I think that leads to a cagey affair rather than an open game.

Oh, ok. Didn't notice. Ridiculous stuff, really. Already taking pretty much everybody in the tournament, and then more than half of them get to the knockouts. Are they going to play this until Christmas?

That's UEFA's ideal I guess. Then a Super Champions League club tournament between January and May.

Oh by the way, check this out. Because of the tournament's asymmetric structure, Group E is really hurt as they are more likely to face group winners or group runners-up in the knockouts than qualifiers from any other group. E and F winners play runners up rather than 3rd places and E runners up play group winners rather than other runners up. Then these sorts of effects compound through the group stages.

Bit of a joke. All for making more money. These rules should be simple. 16 teams, 4 teams per group, all teams play the same time or at max on two distinct times, 2 best of each group advance, group winners play group runners up.

Mostly similar team, let's say. The exact lineup has varied occasionally, but what I mean is that there seem to be nobody important missing. Some may have looked at Salihi for goals, so maybe him, but he's 32, plays in Albanian league and hasn't scored an international goal for years, so I'm not extremely shocked by him not having his place in the NT.

What opportunity are you referring to? Staying at Burnley and being a bit part player? Burnley also only offered him a 1 year extension at his stage in his career a 2+ year contract is what he's after.

Barton now has the opportunity to help Rangers rise and challenge in the SPL. Rangers are by no means a cert for the top 4 next year so it will certainly be a challenge against all other 11 clubs. Barton will also play every game for Rangers and will be (is already) adored by the fans.

And on that basis, the list is wrong. Dynamo Kyiv has 65 official trophies, Ferencvaros 69 and Olympiakos 101, so ManU, Liverpool, and Bayern have no place in that list. Only very modestly successful clubs as they are.

You can surely only beat whats put in front of you.... before the noughties and the huge injection of cash, the Scottish league was one of the biggest.

OK the list may be wrong but the team at number 1 is still the same. If we are nit picking we need to consider the fact that Scotland and England have two cups whereas in other countries they only have one.

This is one of the main reasons why money is ruining football !! Go back to the 90s and it was a lot different!

When TV money took over football the biggest clubs in the world like Ajax, Celtic and Rangers couldnt compete with the Spanish and English leagues.

The rich are getting richer and the footballiing giants are dying. Imagine leaving a huge club like Rangers, Celtic or Ajax to go to Stoke.

Money is one thing. But the point was that different competitions have different value. There are other means to value them than money, and the two-horse race Scottish titles just don't value up there. only 19 out of 120 league titles have not been won by Rangers or Celtic. Same trend in the cup. That's also why Olympiakos and Ferencvaros would rank high in those lists. But it's non-sense, it's success because of the lack of competition.

Do we reckon he'll sign a new deal with Stoke or move on to somehwree, perhaps with European football?

Could fit in nicely with Leicester on the left side (Albrighton/ Schlupp) but not sure his lack of pace would be suited to the team, though he does boast height and strength (similarly to Ulloa I guess)

I've been looking into attempts on goal during the Euro qualifyers. Some interesting things have cropped up.

Midfielders. Reus looks threatening. Joint 6th for attempts on goal despite only playing 4 games. 12 attempts and 2 onto woodwork.Budget friendly Grosiki, Konoplyanka and Dzsudzsák look threatening holding their own among household names. Alaba is listed as a defender but also looking impressive.

Defence. Schär looks a threat based on his 6 games. More so than the more expensive Alba and Rodriguez. A few honarable mentions include both the Czech fullbacks, Shevchuk, Boateng and McAuley.

I have Grosicki at the moment..

De Bruyne / Rues can fight it out for the heavy hitter spot. Not too pushed on Konoplyanka, great player but in a poor team.

@IM what do you make of us in the opening couple of games . I don't rate Sweden too highly tbh I think there is a lack of overall quality there and I don't to be banking on a Zlatan masterclass . I think we could easily get thrashed by Belgium if Hazard turns up it could end badly.

I think that at the top of our game...

              We can beat Sweden.

We can get under Belgium's skin and maybe "do a Germany" on them, maybe a draw..

I expect us to get beaten by Italy, but not thrashed. Hope I'm wrong as I'll be there for that match!

It's all up in the air, we're a decent team on our day and could give anyone a headache.. BUT.. off our game, we could be absolutely demolished.

Gotta keep the faith! 😀 I think we have a few underrated players. If Whelan / Ward are played every game and Hoolahan is not, then I'll kill O'Neill myself.

I miss Steven Reid at times like this . I think he would have been more important than Hoolahan tbh because he could pass and get on the ball and he could play centre mid . McCarthy , Whelan etc look afraid of the ball alot of the time they proceed to pass it back to John O'Shea who lorries it up the pitch. I do not think they will get over exposed by Sweden unless Zlatan has an absolute blinder .

    Here's my team

    De Gea, Patricio
    Rodriguez, Koscielny, Hector (Prodl, Chester)
Payet, Koke, Cesc, Kroos (Joao Mario)
    Muller, Kane, Janko

+1.0 ITB but not sure what to do with it.
    Thinking Janko >> Giroud

Defence looks good, I would probably make a few changes in midfield and make your bench better.

Considering we can make subs after each set of games per day, having a good bench will stand to our advantage

Not sure if Payet will start but if he does he's a good pick. Koke and Cesc I would swap to cheaper mids that have a good chance of getting points like Mak, Grosicki, Alaba (is a must have imo),

Instead of Prodl, I'd go with Vsaljko/ Denayer as I'm not sure on Prodl's starting chances. Chester is a decent pick but has a tough group. Maybe one of Eliseu (Portugal) or Djourou (Switzerland)?

Cheers Carp. Hopefully Payet starts. Will keep an eye on France friendlies, but I think he will. I like Koke- had a good season with Atleti. Cesc is on set pieces but Grosicki could be good. Does Alaba play DM or CM?

Payet will 100% sure start (if fit), but in attack. Your predicted lineup before was nonsense.

If you have another 1.0 ITB, I would recommend Grosicki from Poland instead of Joao Mario.

Other than that, it looks like a pretty good team!

Do you think Patricio is a better goalkeeper choice than the Polish goalkeeper (Szczesny or Fabianski, I don't know which one of those two will start)? And I have also Cesc in my team, but I'm not entirely sure of him, do you think Kroos is a better option?

      1. England's Number 1
        • 10 Years

Was just considering getting him for Cesc but that would be better. Poland were great in qualifying. I had no idea.

It was Fabianski in (most of) the qualifiers. Can't see them changing now. And I'd have Kroos over Cesc. Germany have an easier group.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but Cesc is more of an attacking midfielder, as Kroos is more a central (defensive) midfielder in the German squad. Kroos has an easier group, but I think Cesc maybe has a bigger chance of scoring points. It's a dilemma!

I'd guess first choice. Klopp seems annoyed at Mignolet and his goalkeeping choices.

I think people get a bit over excited about some recently hyped players. The big team managers will not select a team full of inexperienced youngsters to a big competition like this. Particularly in defence, they will mostly go by experience.
