Euro 2016

Scout Notes – Euro 2016 Friendlies

Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet both find the net as France leave it late to get the better of Cameroon. Elsewhere, an under strength Sweden stutter to a goalless draw against Slovenia in their penultimate friendly before Euro 2016 gets underway a week on Friday.

France 3 Cameroon 2

The hosts took their record to eight wins in nine friendlies with a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Cameroon in Nantes last night.

Blaise Matuidi opened the scoring with his fourth goal in the last nine for Didier Deschamps’ side and is shaping up to be an overlooked differential. Despite bagging a couple of assists during that run, the 7.0-priced midfielder sits in just 5% of sides in the Uefa game.

Paul Pogba showed just why he’s the most popular player in Uefa (42% ownership) with a stunning assist, whilst Kingsley Coman and Dimitri Payet threw their hats into the ring for starting roles on the wings by bagging an assist and goal respectively. Although Payet’s late free-kick winner hogged the headlines, the West Ham playmaker turned in another creative masterclass and also provided eight key passes, suggesting that he could yet oust Anthony Martial in Deschamps’ starting XI.

Olivier Giroud strengthened his claim for the lone striker role by bagging his sixth goal in the last nine friendlies. Owned by just 5%, the Arsenal frontman – costing 8.5 in Uefa – fired his side’s second on 41 minutes before being replaced by rival Andre-Pierre Gignac on 65 minutes.

At the back, Adil Rami was handed the chance to impress alongside Laurent Koscielny as Deschamps mulls over his options in light of Raphael Varane’s injury absence. Yet to be added to the Uefa game, Rami looks set to battle it out with Eliaquim Mangala (5.0) for a place in the first XI, though France’s recent defensive record is hardly encouraging – they have now conceded twice in each of their last four fixtures.

France XI: Lloris; Sagna, Rami, Koscielny, Evra; Diarra (Kante 46), Matuidi, Pogba (Sissoko 65); Coman (Cabaye 76), Giroud (Gignac 65), Payet.

Sweden 0 Slovenia 0

Sweden were without a number of players including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kim Kallstrom, Marcus Berg and Martin Olsson for last night’s goalless draw against Slovenia.

Both sides managed a mere two shots on target apiece, with John Guidetti looking the man most likely for Erik Hamren’s side – partnered by Isaac Thelin up front, he produced three efforts and a couple of key passes over the 90 minutes.

The result means that Sweden have now conceded just twice in their last four fixtures. Fantasy managers looking for a cut-price defender should keep an eye on Viktor Nilsson Lindelof, who seems to have stepped up his case for consideration after previously failing to play any part in the qualifiers. Priced at just 4.0 in the Uefa game, he has now started each of the last three friendlies and could be worth a gamble as a budget enabler if he gets the nod in the final pre-Euros friendly against Wales on Monday.

Sweden XI: Isaksson; Lustig (Jansson 46), Nilsson Lindelof, Granqvist, Durmaz; Larsson, Hiljemark, Wernbloom (Rohden 71), Forsberg (Zengin 46); Guidetti, Thelin.

Pretty sure Emre Can is in the German squad as a RB, as their only RB. Otherwise, they would have picked him - especially when they picked better DMs in Weigl and Kimmich.

It shows how little we know here. I think we are going to have to reevaluate some players before the tournament to make sure we have a team of starters. If they don't start they are useless

Marco Reus turned 27 today - and his present from doctors with the Germany national side was to be told he was unlikely to be fit enough to feature at Euro 2016 due to a groin problem.

According to his national team-mate, Sami Khedira, Reus has taken the news as well as can be expected for a man who also had to sit out the World Cup in 2014.

Khedira said: 'Marco Reus took the disappointing news in a very composed manner.'

I'm very surprised that Bellarabi has been dropped even when Reus is out. He would have been a natural replacement, I suppose. That lack of wide players, added with the huge number of attacking mids (Sane, Draxler) - I feel we could have a new formation in the offing. 3-5-2 probably?

Worst game of football I've seen in ages, perhaps through out of all time.

Viktor Lindelöf will be nailed on, been great for Benfica this winter/autumn.
He was named in the team of the tournament in last summers championship winning side in u-21 Euros.
We will most likely start with 2 different forwards, Zlatan and Berg.

The only one that made a possitive impact in the game were no surprise. It was Emil Forsberg in the midfield, 5.5m, he is our only player that has the drive and ability to do something to unlock the stale mate we always find ourselfs in.
Had a great season in Leipzig.

The Hoff had a great time in Portugal since february.
The problem its Sweden CS potential… Well, he did scored 1 goal for Benfica in a set-piece.

I think he is a decent enabler and a decent punt.

Well, we suck! But midfield always take a lot of responsibility to help out.
We have been crying out for a good CB pairing for many years and finally it seems we have a real talent in Viktor. So I'll ve more then pi**ed if he and Grankvist don't pair up as CB's.
He is being scouted by lots of clubs.

I do actually. If it lets you get a good enough team elsewhere and it fits in with your day to day schedule. Much rather have him then Joao Matio for example.

Kroos will play in exactly the same position.
The question is who will play alongside Muller and Ozil…
And in what formation. 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-1-2?

Unless he puts Gotze out wide in Reus' position, then Kroos could push forward with Khedira and another CDM backing him up.

Kroos has develop a playing style that does not fit anymore in a #10 role.
I guess its more likely that he plays like in Real Madrid (with Casemiro and Modric).

Yep I agree.. Except I can see it being something like this for Germany:

            -------------------------------Weigl/Kimmich-----------------------------
            ------------------Khedira-----------------------Kroos ---------------------
            -Ozil-------------------------------------------------------------------Gotze-

Don't be so sure. Could be something like this:

      Kroos-Khedira
      Ozil-Muller-Gotze
      Gomez

      OR Even

      Kroos-Khedira
      Draxler-Ozil-Gotze
      Muller

The money saved from Ozil to Kroos could buy me Payet to KDB.

    Interesting

Seen a lot of talk around Rafa.
Lets get one thing straight, he is not nailed.

And has one big problem: a punt playing on the last day of the GWs. You could get yourself subbing a 2/3 pointer for a blanker .

I'm little bit worried that people ask my opinion in particular on seemingly just anything now (I've never proclaimed myself as a Portuguese football expert, have I?). Hope I'm not becoming the new Doosra. 😉

However, I don't have much to say about Rafa Silva. If anything, it's that I'm surprised that people seem to be so convinced that he'll play. Him having any chances to play depends on Ronaldo playing CF. Which seems not unlikely although Eder has had some revival of recent (if that's possible for such a horrible donkey), so is there a chance Ronaldo is moved back to the LW position? But even with CR7 upfront, Rafa Silva played 0 minutes in qualifiers, didn't he? And only scrap minutes in friendlies after as well.

Haha well you just seem to know everything about every club, you even know who Ciman was 😀 But cheers, so would you rather keep Alli and Grosicki then to switch to Gotze and Rafa Silva then? Or find the money elsewhere to fit in Gotze

I just follow more continental than British football, and have a keen interest to (football) statistics, that's about it.

I don't know, I'd personally be happy to see Kroos in my team and not transfer him out for any of those. If it helps, I still very much think Ronaldo may be worth having, and I'd probably rather double up on Portugal defence than attack.

I am portuguese so i know what i am talking about.

        1) there is 0 chance that Eder starts for Portugal any game

        2) Portugal will play 4-4-2 with Ronaldo and Nani upfront (Quaresma getting a vote)

        3) Rafa and A.Gomes will dispute the LW. A.Gomes is in front.

        4) I believe that Portugal will need Rafa´s speed and ability to unbalanced the other team, so i trust that Rafa will start from the second game

You can sub players in during gameweek who haven't played yet so need a stronger bench. You have cheaper options for all your defenders from the same country.
