Moving Target

Moving Target – Sadio Mane

While Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already made three additions to his squad this summer, bringing in Joel Matip, Marko Grujic and Loris Karius, the signing of Southampton attacker Sadio Mane for a reported £34m fee looks his most significant piece of business in the summer transfer window so far.

The Senegal international scored 11 Premier League goals last season for Saints and, despite interest from other clubs, was keen to sign with the Reds largely in part to the attraction of working with former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp:

“I knew Liverpool were interested in me, I had some [other] opportunities, but I think for me this is the right club, the right coach and the right moment to change… He [Klopp] said he wanted me to come to play for Liverpool. I didn’t even have to ask myself, I said straight away ‘yes, I am interested’ because I know Liverpool. I am convinced Liverpool are the right club for me with the right coach.”

Klopp, meanwhile, was equally enthused and admitted to the club’s official website that he’s been on Mane’s trail for some time:

“I have followed Sadio for a lot of years since his impressive performances in the Olympics in 2012, and then watched his development in Austria and in his time at Southampton. Since I came here I have spoken to the staff a lot about him and have always felt he could be a very good signing for us. He has a lot of quality, works hard and has a very good goalscoring record. When I spoke to him I could tell that he was passionate about joining the club and playing for our fantastic fans. I think they will be just as excited about seeing him put on a Liverpool shirt as I am. It is great that we have managed to sign him so he can work with us from the first day of pre-season.”

The History

Mane started his footballing education at Académie Génération Foot, a Senegalese football academy, before joining French side Metz in 2011. He made his professional debut for the Ligue 2 side as a substitute against Bastia in January 2012, and was handed 19 league outings in total during the 2011/12 campaign, scoring just one goal.

Mane’s performances caught the eye of scouts across Europe and Red Bull Salzburg swooped for the attacker’s services in the summer of 2012 for a fee of €4m. During the two seasons he spent with the Austrian outfit, Mane scored 42 goals in all competitions and helped his side to a domestic double during the 2013/14 season.

The Senegal international then made his way to Southampton on September 1, 2014 for a fee of £11.8m. Mane continued to grow as a player during his time at St Mary’s and famously notched the fastest ever Premier League hat-trick in just two minutes and 56 seconds during a 6-1 victory over Aston Villa in May 2015. He ended his first season with Saints with 13 goals and nine assists in 40 matches in all competitions, and bettered that record last term, totaling 15 goals and nine assists from 43 appearances.

The 24-year-old made his international debut against Morocco in May 2012 and has since played 34 times for Senegal, scoring 10 goals, and also featured in the 2012 Olympics for his national side, who exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage.

The Prospects

The addition of Mane to what was already a potent looking Liverpool forward line should only make Klopp’s side an even more dangerous attacking unit next season.

The Senegalese international offers plenty of versatility, being able to operate in both wide positions and centrally, and is just as effective in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation – the two systems that Klopp favoured last term.

Crucially, Mane’s arrival will bring a much-needed injection of pace to the Reds’ attack, with players such as Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana more adept at creating chances for others rather than making clever runs off the ball and offering a direct threat on the counter attack.

There will certainly be plenty of competition for places at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino and James Milner other contenders for the attacking midfield positions alongside Coutinho and Lallana, while one of Daniel Sturridge or Divock Origi could be utilised out wide, particularly in the 4-3-3 system.

Despite Klopp’s wealth of options, the smart money is on Coutinho, Firmino and Mane lining up behind a lone striker, with the trio set for an intriguing battle for our Fantasy attentions in the centre of the park.

All three are likely to come in at around 8.5 to 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) next season. Fantasy managers will be spoilt for choice from the Reds midfield. then, although with Firmino leading the way for goal conversion rates last term with 15.9%, compared to 12.8% for Mane and 7.2% for Coutinho, it could be the former Hoffenheim player who holds the slightest of edges. As already mentioned in our Great Expectations article on Firmino, he averaged 5.8 points per appearance from the point of Klopp’s arrival last season.

Coutinho, meanwhile, fired more attempts than any midfielder in 2015/16, whilst Mane’s underlying numbers are also impressive – the new boy was second to only Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez for both shots inside the area and penalty box touches last season.

Liverpool’s lack of European action should also favour their chief protagonists and ensure there’s no repeat of last season’s final few months, where Klopp’s rotation policy saw many players’ domestic minutes rationed.

It’s worth noting, though, that Mane will miss at least four Premier League matches in January and February due to Senegal’s involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Looking at the fixture list, Liverpool’s tricky start to the season could be a deterrent to would-be investors. The Reds open up with a difficult trip to the Emirates, while they also have to travel to Tottenham and Chelsea during the opening five Gameweeks.

There have also been reports that their home match against Burnley in Gameweek 2 could be switched to Turf Moor to allow the redevelopment of the main stand at Anfield to be completed, so while they managed to record impressive victories on the road against Chelsea and Man City last season, the prospect of having just one home clash during the opening five Gameweeks, at home to champions Leicester, would limit the appeal of Liverpool Fantasy assets.

Mane did show during his time with Southampton an ability to produce on the big occasion, though, registering attacking returns against Man United, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool last term, and ended the season with four double-digit hauls during the final eight Gameweeks.

Since he has been in the Premier League, the Senegal wide man has shown in flashes his potential as an explosive midfield option for FPL bosses, and with the demands Klopp is likely to place on the 24-year-old, it could be that Mane is able to take his game to the next level on Merseyside.

He could be a player to keep an eye on during the opening fixtures of the season, then, with investment more likely from Gameweek 6 onwards when the Reds’ schedule (HUL, swa, MUN, WBA, cpl, WAT) eases, and we have the chance to assess his impact on the Liverpool midfield.

Struggling a little bit due to England and Croatia losing. I'm looking at making 5 changes for -4.

    Current:

    Hennessey (2), (Hart)
Meunier (2), Hector (3), (Srna, Rami, Dier)
KdB (2), Ozil (3), Payet (4), (Peresic, Alli)
    Bale (2), Lukaku (2), Gomez (3)

    Changes:

    Hart -> Lloris (4)
    Srna -> ???
    Dier -> ???
    Peresic -> Hazard (2)
    Alli -> Draxler (3)

I'll keep Rami on the bench for the semis, but who do I go for as my last two defender? 9.0m total Thinking day 1 is best as we'll have the lineups but can't afford two day 1s.

    A) Fonte 4.5
    B) Jed 4.6
    C) Glik 5.1
    D) Pazdan 4.6
    E) Ciman 3.9
    F) Denayer 4.5
    G) Höwedes 5.0
    H) Giaccherini 5.1
    I) Mangala 5.0
    J) Umtiti 4.0

Would really appreciate thoughts of squad balance as well. (No WC)

    Thanks

Mane is a funny one. Look at his stats and you'd have to say I'm having some of that. Unfortunately my experience of owning him is on a par with the likes of Giroud and Hazard, rarely scoring when in my team, bagging hauls as soon as sold! Can you just stick him in and leave him there? I'm not sure that's a good tactic in fpl. For £34m you'd think he'd have to be reasonably nailed although rotation seems likely amongst the Liverpool attackers next season. For me I'll probably see how it goes to start with, miss his hauls, bring him in for an extra million just in time for his 10 game barren spell 🙁

He's one of the most inconsistent players I've seen in a Saints shirt. He can destroy teams and then go missing for 90 mins.

Great bit of business for Saints. I wouldn't fancy him myself for that very reason. Bit of an attitude problem too, not turning up etc.

Before his brace against Liverpool last season, he'd went 20 matches without scoring. Only registered 2 assists in that time as well. I'll probably avoid until I see how he settles in the team. I do think at 24 years old he can still grow into a more consistent player (and maybe mature that attitude a bit) I just want to see how it develops.

I couldn't buy into this 'all your eggs into one basket' strategy, mainly because I'd be left short if there was an upset and I'm not playing for cash or chasing anyone. So I'm looking at:

    Lloris, Courtois
Giaccherini, Meunier, Jed, Fonte, Sagna (unless Umtiti has been confirmed?)
    Hazard/KDB, Payet, Blasz, Draxler, Parolo
    Ronaldo, Griezmann, Lukaku.

    Any thoughts?

Ah but I would counter argue that you're leaving yourself short by going with spread-risk too..

For example, one of Italy or Germany are going to win.
If I spread the risk and get 2 from each, I'll have a likely (75%) but maximum of 2 good players out of 4.
If I go all eggs in one basket, and get 4 Italians/Germans, then I'll have a 50% chance of hitting but my ceiling is so much higher.

Plus, we do get 6 transfers in the next round.. That should fix ANYthing..

Belgium so I have no Welsh.

And nope, dunno about that one either. G vs I and P vs P are the two I really struggle with. I have none from Iceland or Wales because I feel fairly comfortable about the outcomes.

              Fair enough 🙂

I see GER v ITA as tighter than P v P personally, so I'd get a German and Italian defender if you want to hedge your bets.. Draxler and Parolo are both cheap enough to punt on as enabler types. You've a nicely balanced team 🙂 I'm going a bit more ballsy 😛

Personally, Poland. But it's the one match I'm very, very unsure of. Could be 0-0 or 3-3.

Poland have been very tight at the back so I'm going with Fab + Glik, Milik as a cheap enabling attacker (Giroud is a yellow away from being dropped for Gignac and Lukaku is Lukaku.. Going with big Belgian mids)

Ronaldo could turn on the style and leave me screwed, but he hasn't impressed me yet this tournament.

Let's say it's 1-0 Poland in halftime. Renato Sanches is brought on as a substitute. Game finishes 1-1 and goes to penalties.
      Will Renato Sanches

    - Is Hazard still a good pick alongside KdB with his fitness "doubts"?
    - Are Belgium a good bet for a CS against a team that took 4 points from them in qualifying?
    - Is Fabianski definitely first choice ahead of Szczesny?
    - Any better mid other than Ramsey? Draxler would allow me to upgrade Meunier/Fabianski but he faces 4 of my players.

Currently have Glik instead of Pazdan / Jedrez as they're both a YC away from suspension.

Which websites should I look at if I want to start betting? Most seem to offer bonuses, but all of them have tricky terms and conditions. I'd prefer websites which offer regular bonuses as I don't fancy myself winning against the house on their odds.

Which 2 mids for 12.7m? Poland, Germany, or France?

    (A) Blaszczykowski (7.5) + A.Gomes (5.0) or R.Sanches (4.4)

    (B) Grosicki (6.9) + Parolo (5.5)

    (C) Kroos (7.0) + Parolo (5.5)

    (D) Draxler (6.5) + J.Mario (6.0)

    (E) Matuidi (7.0) + Parolo (5.5)

              Just translate the page:

              PORTUGALPortugal: Guerreiro package Moutinho back
Raphaël Guerreiro certainly should withdraw and leave his place to Eliseu against Poland in the quarterfinals of the Euro.

Raphaël Guerreiro, who is still driven apart Wednesday morning in Marcoussis, will certainly withdraw and leave his place to Eliseu, who replaced him and sank against Hungary (3-3) in the last game groups. André Gomes, released at the 50th against Croatia, it could be supplemented by Joao Moutinho digitally, which took over the group sessions.

              Quite clear

They did, they said Hazard went on and dribbled past few defenders, which counts as a solo goal. They added that they don't want to credit someone with an assist and get a Maradona goal in Mexico '86 when he did all by himself. We don't agree with that but that's their final decision.

Would you save your WC if you could get this team for free?

    Hennessy, 4m
    Jedr, Hector, Muenier, Umtiti, Guerrerio
    Hazard, KDB, Grosicki, Payet, Draxler
    Muller, Bale, Ronaldo

    GK/Def worries me....

  28. Bushiosboys

I am going to risk keeping Hazard. I am hoping I have enough cover everywhere else if he doesnt play and he could have blanked anyway meaning we would have benched him. If they get through (surely they will) I would be bringing him back in for semis anyway so would save myself one of my 6 transfers.
I'm on my WC now and because of above he is still the first in my WC team. Also have KDB which will mean he gets Captain should he not be fit.
It does make me want to downgrade Sagna > Umtit to free up 2 mil to then upgrade R Sanches > possibly italy mid so that I have players to bring on after belgium game rather than Portugal game with it being before meaning not relying so much on Haz anyway.
