DraftKings Saturday Player Picks

The third DraftKings contest of the quarter-finals hands us two matches over Saturday and Sunday evening to assemble our eight-man squads from.

Italy take on Germany in Bordeaux at 8pm this evening for a place alongside Portugal and Wales in the last four.

Despite a 2-0 win over Spain in the Round of 16, Antonio Conte’s are slight underdogs for tonight’s match. With just a single goal conceded over their four fixtures, though, it’s fair to say The Azzurri’s defensive display will be vital in keeping the Germans at bay.

Joachim Low’s unit have been even more resilient than their opponents and kept a clean sheet in every match so far. Indeed, with more shots and attempts inside the box than any side over the first four rounds of fixtures, the World Champions look in ominous form at both ends of the pitch.

Hosts France go head-to-head with Iceland in tomorrow night’s encounter in the Stade de France.

Both sides registered 2-1 comeback wins in the previous round after conceding early penalties against Republic of Ireland and England respectively.

Didier Deschamps’ side will be expected to dominate proceedings – Iceland have mustered just 28.9% possession so far in the tournament, less than any other side. The tournament favourites, France have produced more than double the number of attempts on goal (75 to 31) but the pair are level for goals scored, with six apiece, thanks to Iceland’s impressive 19.4% goal conversion rate.

Having previously put Thomas Muller forward as a candidate from tonight’s match for yesterday’s contests, here’s another set of names from that encounter, together with a trio of prime targets for Sunday’s final last eight clash.

Antoine Griezmann – France – $9400
Joint-top scorer for the tournament, the France forward benefitted from a change of position during the comeback victory over Republic of Ireland last time around. Having started that match on the right, Griezmann shifted into a central support slot and, firing eight attempts, scored both his side’s goals in the 2-1 triumph. The Atletico Madrid man looks in fine form for the clash against Iceland and could well retain his new role as Didier Deschamps’ side look to book a place in the last four.

Dimitri Payet – France – $10000
The France playmaker’s average of 7.3 minutes per cross over the first four fixtures is quicker than any player in the tournament. Number one for dead-ball duties, Payet has created 17 scoring opportunities for Les Bleus and his eye for a killer pass could prove the difference as the tournament favourites attempt to break down a stubborn Iceland rearguard.

Toni Kroos – Germany – $7400
Thanks to his role as a deep-lying playmaker in Joachim Low’s 4-2-3-1, Kroos has produced more touches and passes than any player in the tournament. Given that Germany have averaged 70.1% possession so far, we expect them to dominate this evening’s encounter against Italy in Bordeaux, with Kroos set to see plenty of the ball as The Azzurri look to sit deep and frustrate. Sitting top for crosses and joint-top for attempts on target, the Real Madrid man offers DraftKings managers an excellent all-round option for our eight-man squads this evening.

Giorgio Chiellini – Italy – $3400
The Juventus centre-half has been fundamental to a series of displays that have seen Italy concede just a single goal in their first four fixtures. Chiellini – who notched the opener in a 2-0 win over Spain last time out – sits second for interceptions and joint-top for successful tackles amongst Antonio Conte’s charges. He’s also been fouled more times than any team-mate and, at a price of $3400, looks excellent value as The Azzurri look to spring another shock and send Germany tumbling out.

Birkir Saevarsson – Iceland – $3100
Iceland’s hard-working right-back could be one to consider for the utility slot in our eight-man squads. Setting you back just $3100, Saeversson has produced twice the number of successful tackles (eight to four) as fellow full-back Ari Freyr Skulason and also betters him for interceptions, by seven to four. Considering that he’s likely to be up against Dimitri Payet on the flank, Saevarsson looks set for a busy night as the underdogs seek to extend their fairytale tournament on Sunday evening.

Spots in DraftKings contests for Saturday and Sunday’s matches are still available, including the $3 entry “Striker” with an $8k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here and play responsibly.

Is Bale a must-have for the game against Portugal?

No other good attacking options from Wales

        I'm thinking so far:

        Wales: 1 defender
Portugal: Fonte, Ronaldo, Sanches (Guerreiro if fit)

5 players from this game, 10 from the other 😀

Nope but already have Ronaldo and Fonte

With 3 in midfield out already, Sanches seems an obvious replacement there. Guerreiro as 4.0 enabler and a Wales defender just in case 😀

have to agree with you KN, Bale has been tremendous, he was involved in everything last night and just cause he didn't his name on the scoresheet it doesn't matter,

Wales have proven they are not Bale+10.

Williams was also superb last night, as was the entire Welsh defence.

Yeah bit harsh on Bale, but he hasn't been a world beater. 2 goals he scored were simply because he just happens to be on free kicks. They were GK mistakes. So while granted he hasn't been poor, I wouldn't base how good he has been on his goals. Ronaldo has been awful though. Mainly.

Just realised the scoring you mentioned was about Ronaldo, but I'll leave my point there anyway 😀

I will always remember the classic moment with Barbara asking Denise what they had for tea ( Denise was bone idle and never cooked a thing).

Nor am I but I agree, for similar reasons. No doubt she worked very hard, but I think she was one of those people who naturally understood comedy. Herself and Craig Cash (Dave in the Royle Family, he also was involved in writing it) were a terrific team.

I see a lot of United fans talking about their chances of winning the league this year.

Frankly I think United are still far away from challenging for the title. Yes anything can happen, for example Leicester last season, I just mean in terms of their transfers.

Mkhitaryan is a good player, but so was Kagawa when he signed from Dortmund. United just don't seem to have utilized their #10 in recent years (fair enough Mata was good but how often was he pushed out wide and will he even be there this season?)

Eric Bailly, to be honest I haven't heard of him like so many others. He's young and has a big pricetag to live up to in his debut season. CB is a spot that United has neglected hugely over the last 3 seasons. Could be the new Varane, could be another Mangala.

Zlatan is good. Had a disappointing Euros (albeit Sweden aren't a great team) but still has goals in him. The big question is can he deliver near the 20 goal mark and justify the high pricetag that he's likely to be slapped with? Will he keep Martial out wide or will Mourinho use 2 strikers?

Will be interesting to see if these signings can adjust to the PL quickly or if they will struggle like recent transfers made by United such as Depay, Schweinsteiger, Di Maria and Falcao...

Klopp had never been in that situation before, and he recovered well with Liverpool. Mourinho has more experience in this league and any of the other big team managers, barring Wenger. I'm not saying that he will win the title, but I really can't see him slump to another season like last year. Top 3 should be his target

Same Mourinho that got sacked from Chelsea last year for having them in relegation position?

I know he has a fantastic record with clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea where money isn't an issue. But look at what players he had in those teams. Players that could be considered the best in their position in the world, i.e. Ronaldo, Hazard, etc.

Who at United can be considered the best position in the PL let alone the world?

DDG. Martial (best for his age).

Hazard was far from the best even in the 14/15 season. And in his first chelsea tenure and time at Porto, there wasn't anyone close to world's best

Not sold on Martial yet, he's had one season so we can't really say anything apart from he's had a good debut. Look at Januzaj, Michu, Carroll in recent years.

Haven't read all your post yet but one issue with Kagawa and Mata comparisons is they have been predominantly No 10s foisted into a wing position. Mkhitaryan has been a winger for most of his last two seasons at Dortmund, was a CAM his first season there. Essentially he can play anywhere of LW, CAM or RW (and has done at Dortmund).

Mkhitaryan is also a level above both of those players.

In terms of versatility, I'd agree because he's shown he can play in any attacking position and flourish (though 2 seasons ago he was extremely disappointing, as were most of the side). From a pure CAM perspective alone, I don't think we got to see enough of Mata as a CAM in an attacking Utd side, we definitely didn't get to see it from Kagawa. Mkhitaryan did take it to a whole new level this season though.

Kagawa was 23 when he signed for United with 21 goals in 49 games (goal every 2.1 games)

Mkhitaryan is 27 now and is coming to United from Dortmund with a 3.82 games per goal average (88 games and 23 goals)

Now I understand they're different roles/ positions but you can't necessarily say that the expectation of Mkhitaryan is greater than Kagawa. In 2013 Kagawa's arrival was almost like the next messiah with the way United fans were going on and he turned out to be a huge flop despite previous form and performances. Could be the same for Mkhitaryan if he doesn't adapt

Well first off, as I said above, Kagawa was jammed out wide where he just isn't suited. Never has been. Even Klopp came out and spoke of his dismay at that.

I also fear your stats are a bit wobbly there Carp. Mkhitaryan is 41 goals and 49 assists in 140 games for Dortmund (playing mostly as a winger, only his first season did he play CAM, the next two was mostly on the right and left wings with the occasional CAM role.) Kagawa before United had registered 29 goals and 16 assists in 71 games for Dortmund as a CAM almost exclusively.

I took league games for both players as we're concerned with league performances for FPL

His stats are fantastic from a wide position I have to admit, and I'm not saying he will be a bad player for United. I'm just saying that a lot of players come to the PL with good form or stats and just can't adapt. Hope it's not the same for him and Zlatan

That's fair, I do tend to look at overalls instead of league alone. Wide is where I'd prefer him myself, think he's best at RW. Absolutely, there's always potential for things to go wrong, what he has in his favour is that he's more versatile than the likes of Kagawa.

Zlatan is more of a concern given his age I reckon. But they'll most likely set up to create a lot of chances for him, so the key will be his finishing which is still strong. Both players have the physique for the league imo, but we have to wait and see.

I'm not disagreeing about potential for Mkhitaryan to disappoint, he did two seasons ago, but talent wise I think he does have a different level to him and this season was proof of it (23 goals and 32 assists in all comps).

Don't go by the muppets on twitter.. I'm as genuine and honest United fan you will find and talk of a PL title is premature.. our main objective is getting back into the CL and i'm supremely confident of that.. i also believe we have a great shout of silverware of some kind particularly in the EL and league cup.. the real fans aren't naive enough to think that a new manager comes in and splashes cash and everything falls into place immediately... it's the hardest league to win out there and will be plenty of competition.. what i do have is serious belief that we are back on the right track and making seriously positive moves in the transfer market... after the last 3 years there is real excitement and a buzz around the club again and that can only be a good thing

I can understand the optimism, I just think that premature expectations of winning the league (which many United fans seem to believe) is a bit unnecessary.

As I said before. Mourinho came to already good teams with world-class players. With a £100-150m or so he made a few tweaks to make sure it stayed that way. I think United is a whole different kettle of fish. Apart from De Gea I don't see any world-class players at the moment.

Fullbacks are a concern, Bailly is young with no PL experience, the midfield is weak despite having the most changes to it over the last few seasons. Rooney is in decline imo.

I'm not saying these problems can't be fixed but it's going to take a good few years, a lot of cash and a lot of patience. Even with Mourinho (who might end up getting bored after a few years and bugger off)

Like i said above i agree with talk of winning titles immediately is premature but what you have to remember is the dross we have been subjected to over the last 3 years that has made us a bit of a laughing stock and rightly so.. i could count one one hand the amount of United games i have enjoyed in the last 3 years.. change brings excitement not just for United but for any club that has had to endure tough times as such..

As for picking holes in the squad that's easy to do with any team in the PL we endured one of our worst seasons in 30 years and a Man City team for example with god know what spent on it over the years finished above us only on GD so will we pick apart their side too or just realise it would be a total waste of time and mean jack..

Seems to me this is just a case of lol @ United for the last 3 years and all is rosy.. once a statement of intent is made to get the club back on track its oh look lol at Jose he won't stick around Zlatan might flop Mkhitaryan might flop Bailly no experience blah blah blah.. it's based on absolutely nothing other than you hope they flop and it goes tits up and you can lol for another 3 years...

Lets just let the United fans be optimistic about the new season just as City Chelsea Liverpool Arsenal Spurs Leicester etc etc will be too and look forward to it mate

Nidge you have the right manager for a couple of seasons before it starts to fracture. I fully expect United to be 2nd or 3rd this season and win it the next one. The only caveat is that Maureen has a limited shelf life and to hang on to him too long always seems to end in tears. I am very much looking foward to watching MU this season.

I think the nature of the game now means a manger that hangs around for 2 or 3 years is pretty long term lol.. we won't see another Fergie or Wenger in terms of longevity in the PL ever again.. extremely unlikely anyway... could well be that Jose spends only a few years but if that means a league title or two and a few cups in the cabinet i'll be happy enough 🙂

Mkhitaryan is a much more physical player than Kagawa - he won't be bullied by the opposition in the same way, and should be able to adapt to the Premier League much more comfortably.

I think the title is probably beyond them, agreed, but take the best defence in the league last season, add Mourinho, and with two banks of four behind Mkhitaryan (23 goals and 32 assists last season) and Ibrahimovic (50 goals and 19 assists last season), I think they're going to grind out a lot of wins.

Bear in mind that these stats are mainly from his third season in Borussia. First and especially second season was awful for him, stupid mistakes etc. so he has big problems with adaptability. As a BVB fan I wouldn't put him in my team, he will have to do something great in GW1 to be in my team later on (same case as Payet).

His first wasn't awful, it just didn't live up to the expectations the BVB fans had for him. He still was good and showed some of his talents, alongside growing pains. 2nd season was a let down, no question. I was very disillusioned with him.

First season wasn't awful if you would look only on the goals and the assist. He was pretty okay at that. But his passing and dribbling was terrible at that time, so many stupid mistakes. Also he played in the central role back then, Tuchel quickly discovered that he is the best in right inside forward type of role. Personally I don't think that he will succeed in the first couple of games for United. Miki needs time.

Problem is my style of betting. I go for both teams to score and only teams with the highest percentage. This include portland timbers from mls-94 percent and hammarby from Sweden Allsvenskan - 100 percent? Can you consider asvising on such leagues?

      1. George Sillett

I don't have knowledge of these leagues but the general principle is very simple. Try and price up the chances of something happening yourself . ONLY ever bet if your odds are greater then than what the bookies are offering. That way you will make money. The odds compilers will be aware of these trends already as they use specialists for each league so will usually price accordingly. It doesn't matter what you bet on value is always key.

Sevilla will be such a joy to watch in the CL this year. It'll be Sampaoli's first try in Europe & it'll be interesting to see how his non-negotiable, all-out attack mentality will fare against the top European teams. A variation on the formation we saw with Chile could do here, that revolves around a mix of sweeping counterattacks with long periods of possession. Guy is adamant about his 3atb but can adapt his system to 442, all dependent on how he rates Sevilla's potential wing-backs tbh.

Either way, great to see him take the leap to Europe at long last, & nudging ever so closely to a stint in the PL in the future perhaps;)

🙂 Good to see another fan! He's got a high-standard to live up to (at least EL wise) after Emery's success, hope the guy does well in Spain at the very least. Crazy how stark of a contrast their is between Emery who had a very conservative system & approach to the football in Spain & Sampaoli who's a disciple of 'El Loco' Bielsa.

Thank the lord he gave us Bielsa.

Surely they can't win the EL again?! I believe they had a terrible away record last season so maybe if he shores that up he could improve their position the league 🙂

I was sorry that Bielsa never quite made it happen at Marseille.

Ha 😉 I sure hope we don't see them in the EL! Yeah, they finished in 7th which is very disappointing for a club like Sevilla.

🙁 Yeah, maybe Italy's more up his alley with Lazio

This is good and why I was so keen on Mkhi. I have started to lean towards having Mkhi and KDB as my two premium mids to start of with. Hazard 's stats look much better with BAPS mind but I think I will opt for Costa/Michy at the start with maybe a double Chelsea D

You could but you'd have to take into consideration that Firmino played for Hoffenheim, KDB for Wolfsburg and Mkhitaryan for BVB. Gulf in class between the teams and players around them.

Can you compare it that way though when Mkhitaryan has played 0 minutes in the PL?

Coming from a league where 2 teams dominate heavily to a PL team that will probably be better in defence is hardly a good indicator of what he will be like.

Di Maria did have a good start, not very fair to base his returns given his attitude problems and being flicked around different positions and not wanting to be at United.

Falcao was knackered and has remained knackered. There was an excellent blog post about it when he first signed for United, showing his continual decline over seasons.

There will always be the flops, Mkhitaryan could be if his 2nd season self shows up. But I think his situation is different to that of ADM or Falcao.

That enters the realm of the old "PL is best league" debate, which they've shown in Europe to be false.

It's a more competitive league, but quality wise I'm not convinced it's stronger. I rank La Liga, PL and BL all relatively equivalent.

It's not false, it's very much true, the difference is that other teams play in awful leagues with no real competition, with games where they can rest for 60/70 minutes and with long winter breaks because they wouldn't want to get too tired playing football. Poor lads.
Not to mention the fact that they do not have two national cups and the structure for their main national cups doesn't require to repeat games.

            1. Somalion

I disagree completely. Yes more cup games and less of a winter break, but that isn't what stops their success in Europe. Frequently they aren't good enough. Simple as. Domestically, there are more teams to challenge for the title, but this notion that mid table PL sides are better than mid table LL or BL sides is utter crap. You can see it with players that come in. Nearly all of the best players in the PL are foreign imports, ones who played in these "lesser" leagues yet somehow shine in the PL. Even players from Ligue 1, a league looked down on more than the BL or LL were excellent this season in the PL (Payet, Ayew, Martial and the likes).
