Dugout Discussion – Germany vs Italy

The third quarter-final of Euro 2016 gets underway at 8pm this evening as Germany and Italy go head-to-head in Bordeaux.

Having won three and drawn one of their four fixtures, Joachim Low’s side are the favourites for tonight’s encounter and warmed up for this one with a 3-0 hammering of Slovakia last time out.

Delving into the data, Germany certainly carry the greatest threat. The World Champions lead their opponents for attempts on goal by a massive 83 to 36, though have scored just one more time than Antonio Conte’s troops and netted a mere 7.2% of their scoring opportunities. Italy, on the other hand, have been far less wasteful and boast a 13.9% conversion rat,e which is the third highest in the tournament.

At the back, both sides have been hugely impressive. Indeed, Germany are the only side yet to concede and have allowed their opponents a mere seven shots inside the penalty box so far.

The Azzurri, though, have been breached on just one occasion – a 1-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland where Conte made eight changes to his XI.

Having sent defending champions Spain crashing out in the previous round, a buoyant Italy are more than capable of causing another upset and clinching a place in the last four alongside Portugal and Wales.

Price not an issue. Is there any preference for one of the French defenders?

    A) Kos
    B) Sagna
    C) Evra

Kosc is a yellow away. If that doesn't matter then him with Sagna 2nd.

Condolences to Italy. Did as well as they could with those players. Nearly beat the potential winners with an average set of players. Now, c'mon Iceland!

Before every tournament, what's always said about the German team? "They'll be there or thereabouts". And they'll be one or d'other.

Hope a great team signs Hector, i'm surprised no one hasn't done it already. He's 26 and Arsenal would desperately need him; price was 12M euros two weeks ago, now i imagine it still being about 15M.

I don't think he has a release clause, Koln used to ask 10M six months ago and then the price went up to 12-13M. Now he's played well as a starter for Germany so i think Koln is going to ask something more.

Can think of a few teams that need a Left Back more than Arsenal do.

      Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool.

    5 players down.

I guess on the bright side the disappearance of KDB and Hazard leaves an awful lot of money to spread around with the replacements.

But France had better go through tomorrow or I will have lost 10 people.

I gave them a summary. I will pop you tonight's one once scores have been updated if you like.

I think we are in a slightly stronger position than we were this morning and we had a 4 point lead then. I reckon it will be about 6 points.

But your mullers have all failed that will be a big blow

My thinking is our defences cancel each other out.

You need 2 x Pogba, Matuldi and Giroud to outscore 2 x Payet and 3 x Greizmann really.

I would make us favourites I think

It's just not easy to be the host and play in front of your countrymen. The fans could turn on you quickly, especially in a game like this against a considerably weaker opposition on paper.

Would be difficult, but if Iceland decide to irritate them, who knows..

How many players are you planning on having from each team for next round? Assuming France go through, I'm looking at having:

    5 x Germany
    4 x Portugal
    3 x Wales (including Ramsey)
    3 x France

Really depends on you, if you think you have a decent score even taking the worst case scenarios. You lose 6 points if Payet blanks with a 2. That's a little high for this round.

Leaning towards Payet, as he is more likely to stay on longer and be more involved in more things.

Having said that, it will be a last minute decision. If I had to bet on the "most likely to score" for this match it would have to be Griezmann.

How has Hector been given that assist?!

Fabregas against turkey didn't get this assist earlier in the tourny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYTM1iJA7Ko

Hector tries to find schweini, deflection that changes the course of ball, goes to ozil, gets assist. Fabregas tries to find nolito, header from defender, slight change of direction, still finds nolito. no assist. This game is a jokeeeee.

Only just saw a good replay of that Hector assist and as an owner I wouldn't have given it. Uefa don't know what they're doing, but we all know that by now.

Some FF players think the game is an exact science created and run by a board of highly intelligent and diligent graduates with an eye for detail.

It is in fact run by two blokes in brown cardigans sitting in a shed in ACcrington.

Big mistake, messing with the assist rule. It's just causing mayhem and every assist is up to question now.

+1. Brings subjectivity into the game.

Exactly what i said with the De bruyne assist with hazard's goal. What defines a Solo goal? it's subjective.

I don't mind controversial decisions, it adds to the game imo, but I fully agree with the sentiment.

If France win tomorrow how many players are you able to field without taking a hit ?

14 for me. (would have been 15 if not for Ramsey YC)

Have Fabianski, De Bryune, Hazard, Munier, Gia all out plus possible Gomez injury. Otherwise have 2 Portugal, 1 Wales, 2 German all through and awaiting fate fate of my four fench players (including Rami)

Hennessey, Bale, Payet, Giroud, Cedric, Gomez, Umtiti, Neuer, before transfers. Question marks over Gomez injury, Cedric mistake on Pol goal and Umtiti losing his place.

      So 11-14.

Noit sure yet. The choice is Lloris, Sagna, Umtiti, Payet or Greizman.

              Payet or Greizman probably

I brought Lloris and Umtiti in as last minute replacements once I heard about teh Belgian defensive injuries. Seems a good decision now

Let's say France will go through, how would you lose your 6FT on this lot:

    Neuer 4.0
    Sagna Fonte Umtiti* Giaccherini* Munier*
    Draxler Payet Hazard* KDB* Grosicki*
    Ronaldo Griezman Gomez

Not sure if Gomez will be fit, any updates on that already?

Thinking Hector, A.Williams, Guerreiro (if fit), Sanches, Ozil, Pogba?

If you had a forward slot needing filling it would be obvious. But you don't and Ransey will be out I would take a punt on Williams as one of your defenders.

Indeed, just some cover 'in case' Wales get a cs. Don't think many of my rivals will have Wales defensive cover either.
