Moving Target

Moving Target – Ashley Williams

Everton continued to step up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Swansea defender Ashley Williams for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £11 million.

The 31-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Toffees, and speaking about his latest signing, new Everton manager Ronald Koeman explained why he was so keen to bring the Welsh skipper to Goodison Park:

“We wanted to bring in a strong player in the central defence position, a player who knows the Premier League and Ashley fits the bill for us very well. He is an experienced defender and the kind of player we need in the team. He is a leader. He showed this at Swansea and he has shown it for his country and he is looking forward to his new challenge here at Everton.”

The History

Williams began his youth career at West Brom, but was released by the Baggies at the age of 16. He then spent two seasons at non-league side Hednesford Town, before joining Stockport County in 2003.

He lasted five years with the Hatters, making 165 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering two assists, while he was also handed the captain’s armband at Edgeley Park.

In March 2008, then Swansea manager Roberto Martinez swooped to sign Williams for a then club-record transfer fee of a reported £400,000, and the centre-back immediately established himself as a key player at the Liberty Stadium, helping the club rise from League One to the Premier League by 2011.

Over the past five seasons, Williams, who took over the Swansea captaincy from Garry Monk, has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League, and helped lead the club to two top 10 finishes, as well as a Capital One Cup success in 2012/13.

Williams, born in Wolverhampton, qualified to play for Wales due to his Welsh grandfather, and made his international debut in a 2-0 win against Luxembourg in March 2008. He led his country to qualification for this summer’s European Championship in France, and the team exceeded all expectations to reach the semi-finals, only to lose 2-0 to Portugal. Williams has currently made 66 appearances for Wales, scoring two goals.

The Prospects

As alluded to by Koeman’s comments, the former Swansea defender has been brought in to provide some leadership to a defence that conceded 55 goals last season, with only five teams having a worse record.

Koeman trialled a three-man defence during pre-season, a system he utilised whilst at Southampton, and also opted for the same set-up at home to Spurs on Saturday afternoon.

At this point, though, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees’ boss will only use this against the stronger teams in the Premier League and revert to a four-man defence thereafter.

Following John Stones’ departure to Man City, Williams looks set to be the first-choice selection at centre-back at Goodison Park, with Phil Jagielka, who Koeman revealed will not be leaving this summer despite interest from Sunderland, likely to be battling it out with Ramiro Funes Mori to start alongside the Wales international.

The Toffees have also been heavily linked with Sunderland defender Lamine Kone though, and should they sign the Ivorian, the chances of using a three-man backline would certainly increase.

Analysing the underlying statistics of Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori in terms of their goal threat last season, the Argentine held a clear advantage, averaging a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, significantly superior to both Williams (214) and Jagielka (216.8).

Nonetheless, Williams’ all-action type of defending, with a desire to put his body on the line every times he steps foot onto the pitch, has seen him put up strong numbers for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) over the past few seasons.

Only Leicester’s Christian Fuchs (with 25) garnered more bonus points than Williams (24) in the last campaign, with the centre-back regularly benefitting when his side managed to keep a clean sheet.

In addition, Williams has missed just nine Premier League matches over the past five seasons, so his durability offers another string to his bow.

Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori are all priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and whilst the new boys’ CBI boosts his appeal, it’s worth noting that Funes Mori scored four goals last term from just 24 starts and is one to monitor if he nails down a regular role.

The new recruit was handed an extended break following his Euro 2016 exertions, and with 10 days’ training alongside his new team-mates, should now be ready to take on West Brom next weekend.

He edges into the picture just as Everton embark on a very favourable upcoming run (wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL, mci, bur), with only the trip to Man City in Gameweek 8 providing a stern test of he Toffees defence; clean sheets around that encounter look likely.

Ultimately, Koeman’s chosen formation will depend how we assess this new Everton rearguard.

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (when fit) will be the favoured options if stationed as wing-backs. Both are more expensive at 5.5 apiece in FPL, though with Coleman injured, Baines is set to emerge as a candidate to consider over the medium-term, particularly bearing in mind Koeman oversaw a Southampton side that kept an impressive 27 clean sheets over the past two seasons.

Sanchez completely anonymous up front, didn't get the ball, didn't see any action, very frustrating for owners.

Firmino was in it, dribbling a lot and at times too much, plenty of touches in the box, couple of shots, popping up in good positions, unlucky not to be involved in any of the goals as he was quite involved otherwise.

Bottom line Bolt does what he wants because he can.

I'd still love him to after the Olympics concentrate solely on the 400m.
Not because the SA smashed MJ's world record !
He in 100/200 has imo gone as fast as he can.

The 400m would be THE next challenge for him athletic wise.

Sub 43 he COULD do but in his own words it's too much like hard work ... Shame really

I saw a lot of peoples predictions for the Chelsea game and nearly all of the (serious) predictions had both teams scoring, is this really the best bet? I fear it could be a cagey game especially if Matic and Kante both play in front of a back four for Chelsea. Trying to pick out the safest possible bet for this game

Thoughts on this for a -4

    Tadic > Redmond
    Vardy > Ibra

Dont necessarily want to take a hit or sell Tadic, but it gives me exactly the right amount of money to get Ibra

Tadic and Redmond not worth a transfer.
Ibra didn't look very dangerous. Had 2 shots from outside the box all game. As an owner, I have faith but I wouldn't be scrambling to get him... especially when Vardy's coming up against a terrible Arsenal defence (he also could easily scored a goal or 2 on the weekend)

    WILCARD TIME....which route to go....

    A) FIRMINO (8.5M) + DIOMANDE (4.5M)
    B) COUTINHO (8.0M) + BARROW (5.0M)
    C) OSCAR (7.5M) + BORINI (5.5M)
    D) LAMELA (7.0M) + HERNANDEZ (6.0M)
    E) DEULOFEU (6.5M) + LONG/NEGREDO (6.5M)
    F) BOLASIE (6.0M) + DEFOE (7M)
    G) SNODGRASS (5.5M) + BENTEKE/BONY (7.5M)

I could arguably squeeze another 0.5m by changing routledge to rodwell however i'm reluctant to loose routledge as he'l be good to use every now and then.

So, I've seen a couple of very respected members laying on the Zlatan love hard today. How just is it?

So I get it that Zlatan is quality, he has always been quality. He has a huge rep and rightly so.

I also get it if you're a Man Utd supporter or FPL 'picked' who is loving the goal yesterday.

    However...

Yesterday and the week before, he was playing so deep and didn't really look a threat throughout. No shots in the box yesterday (source required) and swapped with Rooney, picking up the ball from MF.

If this wasn't Zlatan, would you still be raving as much? How much is it a halo effect of his persona and rep?

I 100% rate him, and believe he will strengthen the team a lot - but still not convinced from an FPL perspective...

Well the problem with your question is that he IS Zlatan. He will score, stats or no stats. Stats are just numbers on a paper at times.

interesting thoughts and youre right to question him. his underlying stats are poor and he does drop deep but I think he has the quality to outscore Aguero this season.

I don't have him. But seriously re-considering it. He still has 2 in 2, and he wasn't a 10 yesterday, but he had a presence on the pitch, a confidence. I can see him bagging 20-25+ this season.

He does this when he feels isolated up front, when the rest of the team fails to service him. He has done it in periods in every team.
It's just a way to help the team play forward, keep in touch with the ball, draw the defenders up and thus creating space for Roo and wingers etc.

I'm not worried at all that he does this, it's just a temporary thing he does. It's not like Roo last season being cemented around the mid circle.

Another viewpoint on him sometimes dropping deep a minute here and there is that he gains baps by completing easy passes and also hitting key passes forward deep for Roo and wingers to run on. He is not just a goal scorer but an assist machine.

I just watched the replay and I was wrong in my original assessment that he could of had 2 goals and 2 assists.

He actually could of had 2 goals and 3 assists!!!

Obviously he scored one goal and had a free kick well saved. He also had the flick to send Rooney through 1 on 1 which Boruc saved.

Not long after Ibra received the ball on the 18 yard line and gently played it through to an on running Rooney who inexplicably chose to dive rather than put his right foot through the ball and shoot.

He then dispossessed a BOU defender and ran towards goal on the left flank, hitting a perfect ball with the outside of his right boot across goal to Rooney who missed the ball after making a central run into the 6 yard box.

Goals and assists will come my friends. 🙂

Morgan and Gray both in the to 5 most transferred out players. Not keen on losing value so early on. Which is priority in your opinion to sell first? Thinking Morgan to Williams.

    Twist to the Vardy-out-for-Ibra conundrum:

Should I ship Kane for him in stead , as I have the £0.5 itb ? Then keep Vardy for Arsenal and Swansea , and make place for Kane later?

I decided to make 2 transfers, 1 was putting in negredo, I had him in in most of my drafts but opted for gray, so thought stuff it made the change but then I had ramierz too along with friend and I don't like having 2 from a team unless essential, so I changed him for Lamela. Mainly cause he is cheap and in a solid team which should perform well (most of the time)

The one transfer I haven't done which was the plan all along was vardy to tekkers but cause tekkers still hasn't moved i haven't done it.
So now I am debating still making a change but instead putting someone else upfront as I got a gut feeling on baston for Swansea

How do Dembele-theorists explain Kane's performance against Inter Milan? (2 goals, 1 assist in 60 mins) Does being a friendly match affect how players link together?

I thought Everton's 3 CBs crowded out Kane Saturday, but was it really because of a lack of Dembele?

Wanyama is no Dembele but he's no slouch either. You'd think he'd be good enough cover to negate the Dembele theory.

I don't have the exact info to refer to, however last season Kane I think had 1 goal in his first 8 matches before exploding with a hat-trick that then started his scoring run.

I correctly predicted that hat trick and captained him that gw. How? Because although he had been on a goal drought, he led the league in shots, shots in the box, and shots on target. The only issue was his conversion rate was at 5%. Hence the stats showed the goals were bound to come and come soon.

Question is, and I ask because I don't remember now, but how many matches did Dembele play in that first 8 matches or so when Kane was having his goal drought?
