The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Chelsea’s stars of 2014/15 rise to the occasion at Stamford Bridge as both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard deliver goals to earn Antonio Conte a victory in his first Premier League outing. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 1.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s spot-kick was hugely significant, not least because it saw Hazard deliver in Gameweek 1, but also because it appears to confirm him as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. That’s something of a puzzle given that Oscar took one in pre-season with Hazard on the pitch. Now with penalties secured, Hazard’s stock, like that of Riyad Mahrez, has enjoyed a major boost.

Diego Costa
Owned by just 7% of FPL managers, Costa’s fine winning strike rolled us back to the 2014/15 campaign and offered a reminder of his clinical finishing ability. His future at Chelsea is far from assured but if he can hint at returning to his debut season strike rate, he may yet enter our thinking. However, an early booking and a reckless challenge on Adrian also demonstrated just why we have to show extreme caution.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spanish full-back has significantly improved his attacking game and is now offering just as much from the left as Branislav Ivanovic on the right. Unlike the Serb, Azpilicueta’s starting role has rarely come under question and with no rival for his position, he continues to stand out as the key option in Antonio Conte’s defence. Tonight’s assist and bonus only underlined that further.

James Collins
Slaven Bilic opted for the Welsh warhorse over Angelo Ogbonna, potentially unlocking a 4.5 option in West Ham’s backline. That already brought Collins to our attention, even before his dramatic blast from a West Ham corner. A start against AFC Bournemouth should be guaranteed but it remains if he can hold off Ogbonna in the long-term.

In Decline

Andre Ayew
The Ghanaian’s West Ham bow lasted just 34 minutes before he gave way with a thigh problem. That was a blow to his 9.5% ownership who must now wait anxiously to see if he can recover for Sunday’s potentially profitable meeting with the Bournemouth defence. With Payet a likely starter, Bilic won’t need to take a risk with his new signing.

Michail Antonio
Charged with containing Hazard, he was always in for a testing evening. Seemingly consigned to a right-back role with Bilic collecting options on the flanks, Antonio was hooked shortly after conceding the early second-half penalty. His start against AFC Bournemouth could be in doubt – his fragility against top class opponents certainly isn’t, nor is his reluctance to continue as a full-back.

Sofiane Feghouli
The 5.5 midfield option is another in the West Ham treatment room. He missed tonight’s encounter with a hamstring problem which materialised in training according to Bilic.

Oscar
We thought he was on spot-kicks, clearly he is not. That’s a major dent to his appeal and with Cesc Fabregas breathing down his neck, the Brazilian’s owners will rarely be able to rest easy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Guys, do you, by any chance know of a league for last year's country champions? It seems after a terrible first week with 40 points I am getting kicked out of LMS, beat the popular team etc, so I need other challenging leagues to join, relying on last years glory...

I didn't have big hopes, I have asked before. Maybe, we should make one, would be fun.

I am not either, I just love the country and wanted to be in the top 1-2 pages of my country league, to follow the teams of the others, etc. I did not expect to win it at all, but 202 points in the double gw sealed it. Oddly, this year there seem to be only around 600 guys there, last year were around 4000.

That is how people who have not won a country league console themselves. 😉 Besides, I have some vague connections to the country, even though I have been born elsewhere and live even further away, I did not pick it at random.

May already have been asked but I haven't seen anything on it. What is the general opinion on West Brom set up if Schlupp makes the move from Leicester to the baggies? A lot of articles talking of the bids refer to him as a winger, but down as a defender on FPL - potential OOP and have always fancied him a good player just not enough guarenteed pitch time - where/will Pulis be using him?

    1. Dr Dream
      • 11 Years

Winger for sure imo...and a good one...

I really hope so, bc I agree - I remember having him two seasons ago because he was getting some OOP action when Leicester started picking up some momentum. He is a good player but the midfield at Leicester wasn't easy to break in to for him.

He is surely got to be getting game time, they can't coax him from League winning, Champions League playing side to sit on their bench, and if he is being bought as a winger then as you say he could make a good one and I would consider him even if he was a Mid, so as a defender surely he needs to be snapped up.

5m - which is pretty decent price if he is a secure West Brom defender, but especially if he going to be used as winger more.

Hazard did look excellent though, certainly got his mojo back as we've all seen, you won't see Willian darting between defenders and cutting in for a shot as much. Just my opinion though.

Willian less involved and also possibly not 100% nailed (though I imagine he's safe given his versatility).

I think the point is more Hazard showing the potential to live up to previous form, not last year's and that he is back on pens - if that turns out to be case then he is a bargain at 10m right now - Willian maybe a decent shout at 7.5 but his points weren't amazing last year, and Haz and Costa be getting goals he took last season (for your mid price mids should be looking at Tadic/Redmond/Bolasie(post move)/Barkley)

The only possible reason can think he is in decline is if people decide to make Hazard their Chelsea player so switch him out to cover other teams.

If Studge is 100% fit he's going to be a starter but it doesn't make a difference, Firmino gets point in any position he plays.

Is that guarenteed - he did deliver last season but was patchy sometimes and definitely benefitted from lack of fit strikers and with added comp from fit Couts, Mane and Wij then I don't feel he is the definite points earner from Liverpool

        1. Frank Black

He has great underlying stats and he went close to get two assists and two goals(could have gotten an assist with the pass that Cou didn't finalize because he got injured).
He didn't always play false 9 last season and he already had competition in terms of points. He's a great assister and too much of a great finisher not to get points.

Yes the pool mid is hard to guess, anyone can get big haul every week. From what i heard firmino looked good yesterday, might get 2 assist if cou didnt break it... guess 2 games more at max & if he didn't deliver then he's out...

Would not be surprised in the slightest to see him given his debut in front of the OT crowd.

I think you can be certain of it if he's eligible to play...is he?

Yes why wouldn't he be? He served his suspension vs Bournemouth.

      He's 8.5m and 11% owned.

I want to see how he fits in the system but he could be good value as I doubt Mourinho puts defensive shackles on him. 8 goals and 12 assists last season is no small number.

He'd be wildly better in a 433 than this 4231.

You can join, just not be selected as a veteran.

What's the concept of the league, or is it what it says on the tin?

Until that, you can join a mini league and try to be better than selected veterans for this season

Anyone taking the plunge on Everton's new £25m signing this weekend ... Mr. Bolasie?

There is a very good chance he could kick off like Mane did for Koeman when first joined Southhampton - but where does he fit in Everton side, nailed on?

I'd play Capoue over Bolasie. I wouldn't even get Bolasie.

Probably do well at the start but I'd drop him after that. I definitely wouldn't hang on to him, week after week, until suddenly it's gw 36 and you're almost surprised to find him still lurking on the subs bench.
