The Digest – Gameweek 2

We draw the curtain on Gameweek 2 in suitable fashion, by collecting our thoughts on the player, the team and the key talking point.

The Player

There really is no contest.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already taken the Premier League by storm, muscling his way past shell-shocked centre backs and into our Fantasy line-ups.

Hands up, I was initially fooled by his languid style and ageing legs. I doubted he could immediately click in a Manchester United side that almost had to learn how to attack with purpose again after Louis van Gaal’s laboured tenancy.

But Zlatan has let the goals do the talking, which is just fine when you have Paul Pogba doing the rest.

As I’ve already mentioned on these pages, it is Pogba’s performance and the way in which he transformed the United machine that convinced me to shed my doubts on the Swede.

It’s difficult to see United failing to control and dominate the majority of teams with Pogba stationed in the double pivot. His energy will surely be the spark to drive United forward and, in doing so, ensure that Ibrahimovic is readily supplied with opportunities in the box.

He’s already proven just how deadly he can be with service and with spot-kicks now thought to be assured, Ibrahimovic is just too intoxicating to ignore.

The Team

Having given Hull City their moment in the sun in Gameweek 1, Mike Phelan’s side soaked it up, offering up another nomination a week later after an impressive win at Swansea City.

But instead we will turn to another promoted side.

Burnley battled against improbable odds to conjure a victory against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, offering us another reminder that, early in the season, there is often reliable value amongst the new arrivals from the Championship.

Sean Dyche’s side have been here before; they could, and perhaps should have survived in 2014/15.

The Clarets boss now knows exactly how to approach games like the Liverpool encounter: shelve ambition, strangle the centre of the pitch and break with speed and purpose.

It was a policy employed even in the Championship at times, as Dyche exploited Sam Vokes’ physicality alongside the pace and clinical finishing of Andre Gray.

Both opened their accounts on Saturday. Both will look to reach double figures and provide strong FPL value.

Then, in goal, there is Tom Heaton.

Already ranked as the top keeper, the Burnley skipper looks to be a gift. A goalkeeper who will churn out regular save points, behind ten players who, at times, will be drilled to contain opponents in order to earn a result at all costs.

The Talking Point

We have to return to Ibrahimovic.

There’s no doubt we have to acknowledge the excitement he has already brought to our season but, at the same time, we should also take time to consider how, together with Sergio Aguero, he’s already forced our hand.

It seems we have little choice but to plump for the Manchester pairing in our attacks.

In doing so, we’re taking debilitating chunks out of our budget and restricting, if not killing, our ability to react when midfield heavy-hitters start delivering.

Should Alexis Sanchez, Kevin de Bruyne and Dimitri Payet hit the heights again, many of us will be hamstrung and unable to exploit their form.

That is, unless we dare to rid ourselves of Ibrahimovic or Aguero. That seems unlikely.

Those chasing gaps, or even those who refuse to bend to the template attack, at least have a hope on the horizon. The heavy-hitting midfielders will eventually become effective differentials.

Two Gameweeks down and it’s difficult to see any asset competing with the output of Aguero and Ibrahimovic. Right now our only worry is deciding which of the two strikers earns the armband.

It’s up to the likes of Sanchez, De Bruyne and Payet to see if they can burden us with any further concerns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Please advise:

Want to bring in Pogba but to do so need to make a 2nd transfer in order to fund it.
So do I do that, take the -4 points loss or not make any transfers this week and get my 2 free transfers
the next game week. That being the last gameweek before international break.

Pogba & Stuani in for Lamela and Gray.

    This worth doing?

    Morning all

Arsenal starting to come into peoples thoughts and it was a question on the Scoutcast last night.

I didn't get to answer but am I the only one who think's we're still a good few gameweeks away from their fixtures being really good?

    The next 4 don't seem great to me - Watford (a), Southampton (h), Hull (a), Chelsea (h)

I'm not sure. With Ozil and Giroud back I don't see any of those teams keeping clean sheets.

Too much value elsewhere with such uncertainty in the team. Rob Holding could be a bargain if he could hold his place down.

Same thought process as me... I can't see them putting any of those sides to the sword... but at the end of the day it IS Arsenal and they could click into gear at any moment.

I posted these 2 assessments after the game last night. Saw someone asking about Bolasie on last page...

    Lukaku

Involved. Finishing let him down when it counted. He does link up well when he plays with Kone (assisted one of his goals), but they're never going to play together in the PL. He got away with his poor first touch more in the second half as Yeovil tired. Never in the right place when the ball was crossed in open play. The lad can't buy a goal at the moment.

    Bolasie

Bolasie played in a typical fashion tonight. Plenty of running and trying hard to keep possession with close control while under pressure. Hit a few well off-target rockets, including one massive slice. Whipped in 2 dangerous balls to the back post, which would have been great if there where any players there. Industrious but ineffective. The lad needs to learn to hit the target. Switched sides with Lennon throughout first half. Stayed on right in second.

Thanks for this useful post. So who do you think will start on Saturday out of Bolasie and Mirallas? (I'm presuming Deulofeu will not start).

I think both will start. Mirallas on left & Bolasie on right, with movement between the two sides during the game.

Everton switched to 4-2-3-1 when they were loosing against WBA and it paid off. So Koeman could decide to keep the new formation.

      1. Third Eye Vision
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

There was some link up between Holgate, Bolasie and Lukaku, although it was underused. Like I said, when Bolasie did get to the byline and put in crosses, neither Barkley or Lukaku where anywhere close to the ball. Lukaku frequently dropped deep to get on the ball. Barkley was busy and had a pretty good game. Scored another free kick from about 30 yards.

    Hello everyone,

First, on behalf of the medical team, I would like to wish the Joint-Chairman David Sullivan all the best after he underwent surgery this week.

Winning our first ever Premier League game at the London Stadium was something everyone enjoyed at the weekend, especially with after suffering a 'wave' of injuries in the last two weeks. Once again the manager, the strong team spirit and the positive attitude of the whole club proved to be essential.

We picked up a few knocks and bruises on Sunday but no new serious injuries.

To continue with the positive news, there is light at the end of the tunnel with regard to Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet.

Both Dimi and Manuel trained hard on the pitch on Monday and Tuesday. They will be available for selection very soon.

Aaron Cresswell is doing very well in his rehab, working hard with head physiotherapist Dominic Rogan twice a day.

He is now walking normally and we will concentrate on improving mobility, stability and strength in the muscles around the knee.

Andre Ayew suffered a rare but very serious thigh injury at Chelsea, which will take time to recover from. Andre will not have surgery and we have started the rehab straight away, working two times a day.

Andre is a highly professional athlete with a positive attitude that no doubt will affect the return to play date. It is early to put a time-line on the rehab, but we are positive to reintroduce him in December.

Unfortunately, Andy Carroll, after his first good pre-season in many years, injured his knee in the game against Astra Giurgiu in Romania last week.

It was an incident where he passed the ball and then slipped on a difficult playing surface, over-stretching his knee.

Andy has been an example at the training ground this season, working hard on the pitch and in the gym, but the reality is that he will be out for 4-6 weeks. One should not underestimate the mental challenge that comes with a physical injury. Andy cannot wait to start going again and he will come back strong!

Sofiane Feghouli injured his thigh against Juventus at the new Stadium. Soso will be back for our next game in the London Stadium against Watford. He will miss the international duty with Algeria, but train hard with the team.

The international break gives us time to train hard and maximise availability and fitness of our team.

    Stijn Vandenbroucke

Are we expecting a ban for Andre Gray?
Also, Firminio - are people remaining patient? A price drop aint great news if it's coming.

Do you think Pool will score a lot of goals against Spurs? Spurs have a good defence. Pool has a lot of attacking options (Studge, Mane, Cout...) so points will be shared.
I prefer to avoid the price drop and look for a better option this weekend (like Mahrez, Ozil, Barkley...)

Kone (Sun) needs to go right? 2FT

    A) keep
    B) Kone->Love (free up 0.5m)
    C) Kone->Holding
    D) someone else (no Swa,WBA,Mid)

Ok so I am about to make the following transfers which will give me the following squad. Gives me a rating of 320 over next 6 gw. Any thoughts guys?

    Heaton (Foster)
    Valencia Mori Evans (Friend) (Smith)
    Hazard Lamela Barkely Redmond (Ibe)
    Ibra Kun Gray

I've subbed out Eriksen and Del Boy for Barkely and Lamela

    Appreciate any feed back

    Cheers

Evans to McCauley as Evans will get injured
      Ibe to Capoue
Gray to someone else as he's likely to be suspended

Good team. Not a fan of Lamela tbh and I'm not yet convinced about Barclay. Prefer to see Mahrez in there.

To get Mahrez I would have to go Capeuo as my other. I'd then have a 5.5 & 4.5 in midfield. Prefer the 7.5 & 7.5 option

Just finished getting the data. Will be heading out on a journey and won't be on a computer till Sunday. Anybody willing to do the baseline-baps thing please copy a link back here in the comments. Will check back here.

Also, if you see KoL, let him know this is available. Till GW2 as of now, will update each week.

      Imminent price drop.
Should probably just take it on the chin and hope he rises again.

They won against Burton Albion... a championship side. It won't be as easy against Spurs

Not everyone has him though. Those who want rid have noticed that all the cool kids never invested in him in the first place.

I agree, Firmino is a great asset. I'll be hanging on and getting rid of Eriksen instead to make room for Ross.

yet to be confirmed, god knows what the FA will do. Ridiculous in my opinion to throw a ban at him now for tweets made some 5 years ago.

Better options at the moment with gray, Negredo and Benteke. But arsenals fixtures are looking very kind in the coming weeks.
Bellerin certainly on my radar, but as for a striker spot, Giroud is 6th/7th in my pecking order

Guys it would really help if you'll suggest which players to bring in!
my team : GK: De gea , jakupovic
Def: valencia , friend , pieters , amat , stones
Mid: hazard, Tadic, Firmino , Capoue, feghouili .
    Fow: ibra, aguero , Long
I am planning to use my 2 free transfers to get in pogba in > firmino out
but il have to leave out valencia for holding
plus i srsly wouldlike to get rid of Feghouli.
    please suggest some viable options.

I need to ask you first of all, why are you set on Pogba? He's a defensive midfielder that will yield few points.

Do not get rid of Valencia. He will outstrip Shaw and is great value at 5.5.

Downgrade your gks to Heatster and boot Fegoolie.

Sissoko to Tottenham may be the signing Tottenham need. Their attack is lost without Dembele
