Say What

Say What?

Pep backs Aguero, Firmino tracks back at the front and Austin’s woken up to water.

Meanwhile, Bolasie and Shaqiri are aiming high, while Oviedo gives us the low-down on Everton’s defensive duties.

Here’s the pick of the quotes from planet football this week.

Food For Thought On Sergio

All good things must come to an end – just ask the BBC’s Bake Off team – but over the years someone’s brought even more comfort to millions of us than a bunch of very nice middle-class people doing stuff with flour in a tent.

His name is Sergio Aguero (13.1), and in five glorious Fantasy Premier League campaigns he’s dished up a show-stopping 888 points.

This season’s return of 39 looks positively half-baked by comparison, leaving 43.3% of FPL managers chewing on the big question – is it time for Sergio to be scone from their sides?

All right, enough of the baking puns, but Aguero hasn’t scored in eight matches for club and country, missed two penalties and been benched three times. And when you factor in Pep Guardiola’s taste for binning previously untouchable talent – Joe Hart anyone? – we’re all left wondering what exactly he’s cooking up for Sergio.

Pep seems to be in no doubt.

I want to be clear again. I am so happy with Sergio and hopefully he can stay for a long time here. I want from deep in my heart he can stay here and play with us. He is a special player, he is a striker who scores millions of goals in his career. I know for strikers it depends on the moment, but we cannot forget how many goals he scores for us.

So form is temporary, class is permanent and Sergio’s going nowhere. Everyone can breathe again.

Until you read what Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) has to say about the demands Guardiola places on his players to adapt to his way – in this instance, being used as a ‘false nine’ at the expense of…Sergio Aguero.

I’m not used to playing it. I did it a couple of times (previously). Obviously it’s not my best position but I’ll do what the coach asks me to do and do my job.”

Aguero’s job, under Guardiola, includes a lot more pressing. And if anyone struggles to do Pep’s bidding satisfactorily, De Bruyne is under no illusions as to what comes next.

There are always new challenges in football. You just need to adapt otherwise you won’t fit in. And if you don’t fit in then you will have to go somewhere else.

Chilling words to put the heat on Aguero.

Firmino On The Defensive

Perception is everything. Mention ‘pressing’ regarding Aguero and we go into mini-meltdown. But it’s just part of the job for Roberto Firmino (8.5) at Liverpool.

Any position in which I play, I will always do my best and strive to be better. I will always play with attacking intent in my position, but I am always looking to help my teammates in any way I can. I am an attacker; however, I don’t forget about defending. It’s always in my mind to help my teammates the best I can. I try to do both on the pitch – attacking and defending – never forgetting either responsibility.

It’s not exactly doing him any harm – while Sergio has stumbled to just two points from the last three Gameweeks, Firmino has 20 from a goal and two assists. And the Brazilian’s workload seems to be taking a lot of the defensive strain off both Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane, helping them to 15 and 17 points respectively over those three matches.

With Liverpool facing a very enticing run of fixtures from now until a New Year’s Eve home clash with Man City, the quality of Mersey isn’t likely to be strained any time soon.

Saints Alive And Learning Fast

Things are pretty peachy on the south coast too.

Nathan Redmond’s (5.9) popularity and price (6.1) peaked in GW3, as the prospect of the midfielder-turned-striker banging in more goals like the one he hit against Watford on the opening day of the season proved too hard to resist for 482,000+ managers.

He promptly blanked all the way through to GW8, but now has back-to-back goals and another 21,000 FPL managers to his name this week alone.

The England U21 star is keen to stress his forward move is still a work in progress, however.

I’m learning a new position. I’m playing up front. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will I transferring into becoming a striker. I’m learning daily in training and learning during the games as well. He (coach Claude Puel) made it clear he wasn’t going to play with wide players, but he also made it clear that he’d watched me before and seen me play, so he knew I had the potential to play there (up front). It was about trying it in pre-season and once it came to the first couple of games of the season he told me I was going to be playing there. It was either adapt and learn or sit on the sidelines, and I’m never going to shy away from a challenge.

If Redmond is all for learning new tricks, his strike partner Charlie Austin (6.6) remains resolutely old school.

“When I was growing up they never had forward players like Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino. The problem now is everyone wants to be a No10. Why doesn’t anyone want to be a centre forward that stands up there, heads it, puts his body in the way and attacks crosses coming in? That is a No9.”

Not that Charlie hasn’t embraced certain aspects of modernity, particularly when it concerns his (previously) intimate knowledge of a club’s treatment table.

Jose Fonte was the one. He’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen. Every day he’d say ‘drink plenty of water’. He lives by it. He’s adamant professional athletes should never get muscle tears. So I’ve lost body fat and put muscle on. It was a big eye opener. I am old fashioned. You can get stuck in your ways. I knew I had to change. What did I do before? It wasn’t anything over the top. I’d come in after a game, have a takeaway and a couple of pints. Now it is a case of having it at the right time. If you are happy off the pitch and your life is in order, you will get your rewards.

Redmond and Austin face Chelsea at home and then travel to Hull before the November international break and look nailed-on for starts – unless Charlie succumbs to a particularly evil prawn bhuna.

The only potential spanner in their works could come from new man Sofiane Boufal (6.8), who scored his first, and winning, goal for the club in the EFL Cup victory over Sunderland this week.

Puel has called for patience with their record signing.

I am not surprised for his goal because he has the technical ability to make this situation but it’s fantastic for him and for all the squad, and very important for the future of the squad. I think it is a good time to stay patient with him because it is his first game to come back and he doesn’t have the good physical level and he can make progress for the future. We must work on his physical level and also on the play, but sometimes he can do a situation that is fantastic.

It’s early days for Redmond’s 6.5% ownership base to be worried, but if Boufal makes a habit of scoring key goals…

Perfect Ten For Bolasie

Yannick Bolasie (6.0) has never scored more than five Premier League goals in a season, so Everton boss Ronald Koeman setting him a target of ten for the season last week seemed a touch ambitious.

Bolasie responded by notching his first for the club in the 2-1 defeat at Burnley, and he seems up for the Dutchman’s challenge.

I’ve not been thinking about it [getting off the mark]. Since I have been here, I have been creating chances and I am happy doing that. But as the manager says, he wants a little bit more from the attackers around Romelu Lukaku. At Burnley I have scored, so that is a start.

His link with Lukaku (9.7) is certainly bearing fruit – the four goals they have combined to score is the best partnership in the league.

With that goal and three assists, and home matches against West Ham and Swansea to come over the next three Gameweeks, 6.0 is a small price to pay for some big potential.

Everton’s strong start to the season has been built around tactical flexibility and a more defensive role for the full backs.

The 4.9% of managers sticking by Seamus Coleman (5.5) – and the 6.3% still on the injured Leighton Baines (5.4) – might therefore want to look away now rather than read what Bryan Oviedo (4.4) has to say on the matter.

When we have possession and are on the attack you have to be a very clever full-back because we create the balance of the team. Yes, I like to play going forward but there are moments when I need to be more controlled. If we are attacking on the right then we need balance on the left and we need to work together as a team. Maybe I am not expected to play that differently. It is the same aspects but maybe I have to be more concentrated on the defensive side because the manager and his staff like us to be very good on the defensive balance.

With just the one goal and an assist between the three of them thus far, that’s slim pickings from this particular assortment of Toffees.

Shaqiri Shooting Upwards

Slim has often been the watchword with Stoke’s mini-marvel Xherdan Shaqiri (6.4) – in terms of goal output, at least.

The Swiss international managed three in his debut season last year, but is already up to that mark in a mere five starts this time round.

A spectacular double at Hull last week caught everyone’s eye – Shaqiri’s included.

Most of the time my goals are really beautiful and I watch them time and time again. Of course everybody wants to score more goals. Every midfielder would love to score 10 or 12 goals a season but this is a tough league. I know I have the quality to shoot well and I’m a player prepared to take a risk and gamble. If I see a space I will shoot from anywhere.

His manager, Mark Hughes, liked the odd screamer himself when he was a player and he’s expecting more of the same from the former Bayern man.

Last year he didn’t score as many as maybe he thought he should have done, and we probably agreed with him last year, for the talent that he has he probably needed to score more goals, but I think he has matched that total already. So the feeling is that there is more to come from Shaq. He looks like he has got to grips with the Premier League and, as a consequence, he’s more positive in games.

With Swansea at home and West Ham away before the November break, the newly-productive Shaq attack could be music to Sparky’s ears.

    Antonio > Siggy -4?

I was all set for this move until Antonio played up front last night. Wondering whether to give him one more game if there is a possibility of him playing there Sunday.

Where do people think he will start on Sunday? Seen some posts he will revert back to RWB, some say up front or even benched.

    Thoughts?

That makes it sound like I went to the FPL. They came to me about five years ago and asked if we wanted to write articles for them and it's grown from there. Wasn't really a strategy of plan, just an obvious path to take given the offer.

I also don't think the ties with the FPL have brought us much traffic, we hardly saw traffic coming direct from them according to our analytics. Might have helped through word of mouth.

The fact is Mark, the moment FPL was linked on FPL the volume went through the roof and the quality dropped through the floor, regardless of who initiated it. I still love the site but the forum has really gone downhill imo

That's fair enough that you feel that but don't make it sound like a cold hearted plan. Clearly, when the FPL said we'll put a link on their pages, I wasn't going to refuse but it wasn't a strategic thing - it was actually there way of brokering a deal to get us to write for them.

We don't have any link on their pages now to my knowledge.

It's feeling I have had for a while now. Always some regulars drop off each year but seems to be more this year and more big players so to speak. Perhaps the wider options out there with whtsapp Facebook Twitter groups all discussing.
Perhaps it's ironic that there used to be accusations of cliques on here and that has ended up with groups leaving to have discussion on forums of their own making.
My own feeling is its a bit like coming to the same circus all the time but health and safety means you are only left with the clowns. Laughing at the clowns only keeps you entertained for so long

We've talked about this behind the scenes and we do think folk are using other mediums to chat about Fantasy Football. Traffic isn't down but perhaps those contributing to the discussion is and I can only put that down to the fact that, perhaps the new visitors don't want to contribute, or have other means to chat Fantasy Football with Twitter, Facebook etc. Obviously we've lost some folk who don't post - that's natural and has always happened.

It does seems to be more regular names who don't post this year, or it may be some of them posted stuff that was more noticeable, stats etc.
I know even this year I have posted things on whatsapp that I would normally post on here. As you say probably evolution of ffs posters

For me its the inevitable by-product of the increase in popularity of this type of game and hence this type of website. Its easy to become a victim of your success. Personally, I stopped posting regularly some time back for various reasons (I was never a big poster though).

Mark et al seem like really great guys and I greatly respect what they have acheived here, the amount of work that must go in to this shouldn't be underestimated. However, having said that resources like this ultimately make it harder in my opinion. But then that just adds to the challenge i guess, plus the genie is out of the bottle and you can't put it back. 🙂

For me the 2 things i come back for are the stats (I use them for my own ratings system) and the scoutcast - which is for me exactly what i like, 3-4 guys chatting/disucssing all things FPL. If you could in some way replicate that 'feel' on a forum i think you would be on to a winner. (of course this is easier said than done!).

Matchdays are not worth bothering with. Endless posts tell us info we already know about who's just scored, and then later, loads of posts saying "I got x points, any good?"

I think so, very much a lurker myself but the quantity of posters seems to have diluted the quality of back and forth discussion.

Take no offence Mark, but we all know that many posters had expected the comments/discussion section to be improved along with the major change of the site a few months ago. It would definitely persuade many posters to stay on here and keep discussing, but as things stand I believe that many find the current display of the comment section a bit... cumbersome? The change of the site was very nice indeed from many aspects, but I still think readjusting the discussion section would help.

        Agree with this
Personally the two things I like are having decent group discussions, this is first one have been able to have for ages .
Secondly it short banter, which is almost all I do now because first is hard to do.
Would be interesting to see if even though the traffic is the same the number of pages or comments is higher.

It's much easier to have a sensible discussion during the so-called "Dead Zone".

At any other time of the day, pages are moving so quickly that it is difficult to maintain a longer conversation.

If Wild Rover wrote the exact same post 6 hours earlier, I highly doubt that it would get at least half of the attention it gets now. Many gravless posters would just flood the whole page with Rate My Teams and WR's post would be quickly forgotten.

Agree with this, can have a good decent debate on stuff around this time. Seems to be far more gravless posters and trolls on in recent times at other times of the day, but sure think that's the nature of the beast. They will more likely point out a flaw or mistake in your post than address the issue raised in the post.

Yes I agree with you. We've just struggled for tech help to move things on. A lot of effort went into the redesign and we're trying to get the next iteration of that out next. But the Comment/Forum hybrid through HotTopics is definitely something I want to try and push along next - it's all planed and wireframed but the need to redesign due to not being mobile friendly had to come first last year.

Wouldn't a straight forward regular forum be better. A reply count could be labelled so people can see the most popular discussions. Replys can still be left after articles but there more likely to be about the articles this way. Mods and helpful posters can then direct people to the correct sections for discussions they want

Agree, I think an overhaul of the comments system is needed. Essentially it is what forms the community on here.

Prime example. A good discussion opens up with many weighing in. Then a few pages pass and it gets lost, posters don't check back for replies, people just logging in don't see it.

Now I understand Hot Topics are a response to this, but there's a lot of good discussions that don't merit a Hot Topic.

Personally I would love a tagging system. Where we could @Bowstring or whoever the user is and they get a notification at a tab in the header or by the "account" in the top right corner. Would mean if I go off to work and come home, I'm not searching for who replied to me, and furthermore if I want to reply to someone else, they will be notified in the offchance they don't check back.

Long periods can go by without posters being on, and the site moves so fast that if you don't get back within an hour or so, the conversation is lost.

Exactly this. You need to be notified of replies without having to check emails. I hate to reference Facebook's and Twitter's notification system, but something like that would be great.

I think some of this is just inevitable growing pains. I used to work for a start-up that grew to a few hundred employees and there was a palpable "us and them" divide between early employees and newer hires. The early folk felt the place had changed and wished for the good old days while the newer ones felt excluded from the clique. Does the OP have any constructive suggestions on how to make it better other than removing the FPL/FFS partnership which obviously isn't going to happen?

    @Lucious Lizard.

This week is a great case in point for my mini league. My son has gone to Belgium on a football tour so won't be around at the weekend.

Before he went he'd been talking about getting rid of Aguero but I told him he'd be daft because he'll come good again (and he will). I have absolutely no idea if he's sold him or not, but I doubt it, and I hope not because I have. His face will be a picture when he sees my team on Saturday. So when do I buy Aguero back?....when my son sells him of course. I think he will have done Capoue > Allen this week instead, after listening to him, to match my Allen...so of course my (-4) was to get Aguero out and bring in Allen > Shaqiri with the other transfer....

Is that worth a (-4)...damned right it is....won't do my OR much good though, and he may paste me this week, but it's all good fun.

It sounds brilliant and a really good example of the fun this game can bring.

It is so much fun trying to outsmart friends and family - and get the stick from them when it fails. These are the ones you watch the games with and these are the one you want to share the fun with.

In my ML we have a habit of banter in the form of really poor poetry, where all the teams and schemes are covered. Also have a league with my family, where we (as a joke) have been playing for naming rights of each other's kids - one of them actually got a nickname that kind of stuck 🙂

Of you course we all try to win as we are all pretty competitive, but in the end that banter and that sense of community is why we are doing it.

But good luck with this week's transfer. I can just imagine his reaction when he sees you pulled one over him! Great stuff and I Think it sounds like a very fun setup you have going on with your son.

"His name is Sergio Aguero (13.1), and in five glorious Fantasy Premier League campaigns he’s dished up a show-stopping 888 points."

That's 177 points a season average. Bellerin, Walker, Redmond, Chadli, Austin, and a few others, are around half his price, and any of these can hit 180 this season. Maybe even Capoue! Even if Aguero does outperform his average, and say hits the 200 mark, are the 20 odd additional points really worth 6 mil??

      • 9 Years

I think Aguero is actually a bit overrated as an FPL player. We were used to having a player like Suarez who we could captain every week and he would almost always return.

When Suarez left, Aguero became the best striker in the league so people saw him as the new Suarez, FPL wise. And, although he is and has been very good with some big memorable hauls, for me he is not on the Suarez level and doesn't have the same level of reliability.

exactly. His returns are extremely infrequent, which is obviously not good. Last season, I remember he went 5 games or so on 2 pts, then bangs in 5 vs Newcastle. Problem with a guy like this being that a hamstring injury (and he is injury prone) in training the week of Newcastle game, then there was no reversion to the mean in terms of his score.

Points per game comparison would be more interesting.

and therein lies the problem. Ronaldo or Suarez you could feel confident handing the armband every week. You could absolutely justify the 13 / 14 mil expenditure. Aguero... we don't even know now if he plays!!! Throw into the mix a bad injury record and a dubious temperament, as well as an apparent inability to adapt to a new managers style. He is playing deeper also by the looks of it. Owners will probably also hope he allows someone else peno duties to avoid more minus points. Am I the only one who thinks 13 mil for this guy is nuts?

Very valid points to be fair.

I just wouldn't be comfortable without him though.

Have you owned him until now or have you thought this from the start?

Have had him from start. Got rid of him earlier today, so my rant is part justification for my actions 🙂 Had him for same reason, so as to avoid others running away on points. My mind set has changed now though; I no longer fear him running away on points (as I've now got Hazard, Sanchez, Walcott & Coutinho as well as Zlatan, all of whom could well at least match him), instead my view is that owners are disadvantaging themselves having 13 mil tied up in such a risky player. Ronaldo, Lampard or Suarez never carried that risk. Aguero I'd take at 11 mil. 13 mil is crippling though. Hazard by all indicators will probably outscore him, and he's 9.8 mil. And people are actually missing out on players like this PLUS perhaps two 6 mil defenders instead of 4.5 mil defenders.

Aguero is injured half the time, so his scores are even better than they look.

Iheanacho has played half the time as Aguero and has almost equivalent points (as well as better underlying stats), so is basically scoring double to Aguero, and the sweetest thing is he costs half the price.

and furthermore, 13 mil for a guy 'injured half the time'.... well, need I elaborate?

    5. bdwhite91
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

Incomplete statistical analysis. PPG or PP90 would be a better metric for this. This average also takes into account the 2 seasons where he was having injury problems (2012-13 and 13-14).

His PP90 is 7.30 points. Do you believe any of those will have a better PP90 than him?

Well firstly, points per minute surpasses points per game, but there is also an argument to be had that a 10 minute cameo role is gonna be a more intense 10 minutes than any set of 10 mins if same player played the full 90... but I digress... You can argue all statistical analysis is incomplete, as there's an infinite level of detail that can always be further captured by the hard numbers... anyway, you absolutely need to factor in if a player is injury prone and has a bad temperament, and furthermore if he is not seeing eye to eye with manager, and is at risk of not playing on account of this.

Furthermore, does the combined points per minute of Aguero and a 4.5 mil defender surpass the combined points per minute of a given 11 mil forward and 6.5 mil defender?

Sorry state of affairs to pay 100m for a cb. I'm disappointed that Pogba hasn't adapted better. I'd say he needs a Pep type defense moving the ball quickly to start attacks and let him open up his stride. Too static at present.

Be like Rooney being converted to a midfielder.

      Expensive and rubbish.

So yes, it could happen, shoehorning players into different positions because they're poor, and managers need some excuse to put them on the pitch because of price bought for or wages paid.

Very much doubt it, but possible.

It's just from terrible papers using parts of the quote in order to sell a weak headline.
