Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

Spurs are wasteful but still cruise to victory while Leicester are woeful and pay the price as the Champions League shuts up shop for the calendar year. Here’s how the last round of group matches played out.

Tottenham 3 CSKA Moscow 1

Mauricio Pochettino spent much of his pre-match time talking up the delights of the Europa League and promptly picked a strong Spurs side in case anyone doubted his sincerity.

He made just one change from the team that spanked Swansea City, Harry Winks (4.5) coming in for Mousa Dembele (5.4), and a generally one-sided affair ensued.

In-form trio Christian Eriksen (8.3), Harry Kane (11.1) and Dele Alli (8.1) were at the heart of the win.

The latter two claimed a goal apiece and both fired seven attempts, Kane scoring for the sixth time in five matches since returning from injury.

The influential Eriksen set up Alli’s first half equaliser and supplied eight scoring chances, while Danny Rose (5.9) also provided an assist as Spurs wound up winning with ease. They still managed to miss a host of opportunities to seal the deal before CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev contrived to save an Alli header only to then kick the ball into his own net.

The return of centre half Toby Alderweireld (6.3), a second half substitution, lightened the mood further.

The Belgian has remained in 9.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads despite missing six Gameweeks through injury. His recovery looks to be beautifully timed – Spurs will play three times in a week before Christmas, have ten days off and then play three more times in a week from December 28.

That ridiculously lop-sided schedule is bookended by fixtures away at Manchester United and home to Chelsea, and Alderweireld will surely play a major part in much of it.

A disappointing Champions League campaign now begets a 2017 Europa League tilt, with Spurs involved in both legs of the Round of 32 between Gameweeks 25 (away at Liverpool) and 26 (at home to Stoke) in mid to late February.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Son (Nkoudou 62), Wanyama (Alderweireld 68), Winks, Eriksen, Alli, Kane (Onomah 83).
Subs not used: Vorm, Sissoko, Dembele, Wimmer.

FC Porto 5 Leicester City 0

Leicester City finally got round to bringing their poor domestic form onto the European stage on a night when their fringe players failed to take a rare first-team opportunity.

With the group already won, Claudio Ranieri was more than justified in making ten changes to the team that lost to Sunderland, with skipper Wes Morgan (4.9) the only survivor.

But he would have hoped for a lot more than the abject display his squad players then produced.

The scoreline didn’t flatter Porto – the Foxes managed precisely zero shots on target all night.

Last season’s revelations Jamie Vardy (9.6) and Riyad Mahrez (9.0) didn’t even travel and Ranieri gave Nampalys Mendy (4.4) his first start since August in a midfield also containing Danny Drinkwater (5.3), who is currently serving a domestic ban.

To cap a desperate night, the England midfielder then limped off with a knee injury in the second half, although Ranieri played down the issue post-match.

“Drinkwater’s injury doesn’t look serious. He is suspended for Saturday anyway, but he should be okay.”

The normally cheery coach was sombre in his appraisal of the debacle, ostensibly blaming himself, although not completely.

“I have no regrets because I wanted to give an opportunity to all my players. If I needed to win or draw, I would bring all my first team to fight, but when you know there is another difficult match on Saturday against Man City and you are top of the group, why not give a chance to players who say ‘why I don’t play? We are losing in the Premier League, give me a chance’. For this reason, I give me a chance to them. That’s it. Then, the result is my fault but they missed a great chance.”

Once that Manchester City match is out of the way, the Foxes have a good run of fixtures – Everton and West Ham at home, Bournemouth, Stoke and Middlesbrough away – through to early January.

The transfer window will be open again by then and there is currently little in Leicester’s squad to warrant Fantasy investment.

Leiecester City XI: Hamer; Hernandez, Wasilewski, Morgan, Chilwell, Gray, Mendy, Drinkwater (Barnes 76), Schlupp Albrighton (45), Okazaki, Musa Ulloa (45).
Subs not used: Amartey, Simpson, Zieler, Fuchs.

Same dilemma, also add Siggy into the mix.

Thinking of removing the headache and going balls to the wall with Alonso captain.

Can't see West Brom troubling the Chelsea goal much and he's pretty much a right winger anyway... if he gets a goal or assist or both it'd be a major captain dif.

Stoke have some serious injury troubles in their back line at the moment so I'm thinking of going Sanchez.

Stoke been good lately and feeling a tony pulis masterclass incoming. A point at Stamford bridge is excellent. West ham in the other hand have been poor.

I know. Getting him would have meant taking -4 to swap out mane, which makes no sense given that Mane is a strong captaincy contender this week, or -8 to swap out siggy and downgrade a defender, which also seems like too much of a sacrifice

I have been hanging around the top100 OR for a while now, never used wildcard , didnt need it but feeling the pressure now to hang in there... 116 OR currently from 90th last week..
Ive decided to use my wildcard next week allowing me a decent AOA chip this week, really becuase my defence is muck this week..
I have 1.3 in the bank no ft remaining and here is how I go in this week.

    Pickford
    Stone Holeobas
    Sanchez Haz Firm Zaha Siggy
    Austin Lukaku Costa

    Grant Pieters McAuley Fodder

    1. Differentiator
      • 8 Years

Dele was taking advice from Marcos Alonson yesterday. Finishing was dreadful apart from the goal! Eriksen's finish when through on goal was pretty poor too, although his passing was exceptional. Created a mass of chances.

Kane's link up play was stellar too, as was Danny Rose's attacking threat.

    Gentlemen,

I seek your advice. I'm all but convinced by Theos performance the last couple of weeks, even after his goal against Bournemouth. I've considered a more defense approach while i can't really find a good lateral swap for him... what do you reckon?

    A) Walcott, Jenkinson & Coleman  > Can, Alonso & Alderweireld -8
    B) Walcott & Coleman  > Can (Alonso or Alderweireld) -4
    C) Walcott > Can to free up funds
    D) Walcott > to ?

I am keen on getting Spurs midfielders, but with Son being the only one I can afford and him not being 100% in the XI I'm not too sure..

    Pickford
    Cedric, McAuley, Coleman
    Firminio, Hazard, Siggy, Walcott
    Kane, Costa, Austin

    Subs: Jakupovic, Jenkinsson, Amat Snoddy

Son will be in the XI. Only alternatives we have are Sissoko whilst Lamela is injured, and people won't be calling for him.

Son is in form too. Go for it.

I know it's a little early to think about it but are you holding Spurs assets after the back-to-back home games against promoted sides?

Next five following that: sot, wat, CHE, WBA, mci.

Kane looks fully interchangeable with Ibrahimovic, Walker/Rose with an Arsenal/United defender, Eriksen/Alli with Walcott etc. and the way this season is going there's no point in dwelling during a tough run of fixtures as there's always an equal upgrade elsewhere.

      Vert > Alonso
Kane > Ibra, then > Aguero when fit

Will likely keep Alli considering his price, and if Lallana remains a good option.

Should I ship Walker to get in Alonso?

I'm thinking Walker is more of a rotation risk than Alonso given their Champs League involvement and a ready replacement in Trippier being available.

However, I do have a lot of value tied up in Walker (PP 5.6, CP 6.1) so it would cost me if I ever wanted him back.

    Thoughts?

I'm in the same situation and looking to get rid of Walker for Alonso in GW18. As you say he is a rotation risk and will likely miss GW16 against Hull.

Arsenal are free scoring right now and Alexis is at the heart of it. Stoke could be missing Shawcross & Martins Indi and I don't really buy into the hype around their defence being good.

        Walker/Ake/Alonso/Cedric/Amat
        Sanchez/Hazard/Son/Fer/de Roon
        Kane/Costa/Austin

In my ML me and main 2 rivals all own the following:

    Alexis, Costa, Kane, Siggy.

    Differentials:

    Them: Eriksen & Mane =TV 102.8 and 103.5
    Me: Hazard & Firmino = TV 104.3

*I have a feeling they(2 brothers) discuss transfers as their teams are close to identical.

I'm 85pts behind the one that's leading the ML.

Hazard/Firmino needs to go big if I have any hope. Mane/Eriksen to blank.

    Do I gamble with (c)?

Still a long way to go in the season. They are your differentials for now, but in 10 weeks time you could have another 2/3 differentials.

In my opinion i think it's too early to go for differentials, go for the players who you feel will score the most.

And by they way, you're two differentials are much better long term + you have a better TV so more scope down the line for better differentials.

      You'll catch them.

Sounds like you need payback this year!

Reckon I'll gamble by saving free transfer and fill up on Spurs & West Ham next week - their fixtures are too tasty to miss out on.
West Ham will be dependent on any promising signs this weekend.
Costa will need to wait till GW 17 at earliest - hopefully after he's served his suspension. 😉

Fingers crossed then for round 4 of FFS cup, hope this doesn't cost me.

How does the WC team look? 0.0m in the bank.

Hey Christina, Thanks, Yeah he is another option. From next week on as well i presume? Think I want to keep Kos this week as good chance of clean sheet there. Even have a sneaky feeling he might get a goal if Martins Indi and Shawcross is out.

Valencia does have better long term fixtures. What about bringing in Rose next week for those 2 nice fixtures and then ship him out for Valencia? Or you not a fan of planning defensive transfers? Other things will probably come up.
