Paddy Says – Gameweek 20

It’s time once again to take a seat in Paddy’s horse-drawn carriage and be whisked away on a magical tour to marvel at Anytime Goalscorer and Clean Sheets odds.

We stop, as ever, to first gaze upon the wonder of the enhanced offers available for new customers.

Football’s not exactly packed full of sure things – it’s why we love it so – but some things are definitely more sure than others, and one of those is Manchester City beating Burnley at the Etihad.

Paddy is offering new customers 3-1 on Pep Guardiola’s boys managing to see off a team with just the one away point to their name this season.

Or you can get 5-1 on Liverpool to beat Sunderland. The Black Cats have won three of their last four home matches, but they haven’t been anyone from the top half of the table, home or away, all season.

If you fancy your odds that little bit longer, there’s 6-1 on Manchester United to beat West Ham and the same price available on Arsenal to win at Bournemouth.

Slightly further out , we’ve got Leicester to beat Middlesbrough at 8-1. The Foxes looked much more like their old, title-winning, selves last time out, but they’ve not won on the road all season.

And if it’s an Acca you fancy, you can get 16-1 on Everton, Man City, Man United and Liverpool all to win. The Toffees are at home to a Southampton side who will have to make do without their previously ever-present defensive rock, Virgil van Dijk, for the first time in the campaign.

Be sure to check the terms and conditions on all those offers and, of course, we should state that all these specials are only available to those aged 18 or over. And if you’re going to wager, always gamble responsibly.

Sergio Aguero is back at the top of the Anytime Goalscorer pile and will be a major captaincy draw for many Fantasy Premier League managers.

But he’s still not proving to be box office gold, with two players well ahead of him in the race to be the most popular transfer target of the Gameweek. The price tag, the form of rival forwards and City’s patchy set of immediate fixtures no doubt providing the obstacles.

Burnley at home shouldn’t get much easier, hence his 1.33 price, but then there’s trips to Everton and an in-form West Ham as well as a visit from Spurs before January is done.

The Clarets are so bad on the road – one point from their one clean sheet – that it seems almost criminal not to have a punt on at least one City player finding the net. Maybe Kevin De Bruyne, who is at 2.10, will end his 14-match wait for a league goal.

Paddy again hedges his bets by offering low odds on Daniel Sturridge (1.80), but it was Roberto Firmino who played as Liverpool’s striker against Man City and his 2.10 price to score at Sunderland looks a far safer bet.

Only three teams have conceded more goals than the 15 the Black Cats have shipped at home, while Liverpool are joint-second with 20 away goals.

The Gameweek’s most signed player, Adam Lallana, is worth a look, therefore. He’s 3.40 to find the net at the Stadium of Light.

Salomon Rondon (2.4o) was benched in the win at Southampton. The smart money is on him gaining a recall when the Baggies’ teamsheet is revealed for the home match with Hull City.

Also in the West Brom camp, Matt Phillips, second only to Lallana for transfers-in this Gameweek, is at 3.75 to score in back-to-back matches.

Harry Kane (2.29) reminded us all of his prowess in the New Year’s Day lesson handed out to a woeful Watford. But Chelsea are a very, very different prospect and both he and Diego Costa (2.10) could struggle to make an impact in what promises/threatens to be a tight encounter of few chances.

The 3.50 available on Dele Alli making it six goals in four matches is probably going to be as good as it gets.

He’s certainly an increasingly popular transfer pick this Gameweek – into the top five and overhauling Costa for new managers.

CLEAN SHEET ODDS – GAMEWEEK 20

TeamOdds
Manchester City1.72
Liverpool1.90
Manchester United2.20
Stoke City2.25
West Bromwich Albion2.29
Crystal Palace2.40
Everton2.62
Middlesbrough2.62
Arsenal2.75
Leicester City2.87

The combined lowest odds on a clean sheet this Gameweek can be found in the Middlesbrough v Leicester fixture.

It’s a match-up unlikely to send many tingles down the spine – Boro are mixing it with the big boys when it comes to their defensive record at home while the Foxes, with just eight goals, have toiled on the road.

Boro are at 2.62, and Leicester 2.87, to keep goals out of the equation. Aitor Karanka’s men look the more likely of the two to actually do it, as the odds suggest.

Man City are the Gameweek’s runaway favourites to record a shut-out, even with their frankly awful defensive record this season.

The reason? Burnley’s truly appalling two goals scored in eight away matches. Swansea City have had more managers than that and we’re halfway through the season now.

Time for the 16.8% of managers still on John Stones to cash in, you suspect. Their loyalty deserves reward, but will Pep even pick him? Either way, it’s little wonder that a defence with only one more clean sheet than multi-managed Swansea are priced so low to add to their ‘haul’ against Burnley.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have now kept three clean sheets in their last four fixtures and a trip to Sunderland could garner another.

Two Reds defenders (Nathanial Clyne and Dejan Lovren) are among the top 30 players targeted this Gameweek, and Sunderland’s second-worst total of 17 goals scored this season tends to back up the wisdom of buying into the Liverpool back four.

A price of 1.90 is available for the Scousers to keep Sunderland’s attack all gums and no teeth.

    Double Gameweeks

Some people have been asking about Double Gameweeks. Most players from the introduction of the new chips last season know all about them, and their benefits. However, I hope I can provide some information to help anyone still a bit confused.

    What are they?
They are GW's where matches postponed from earlier in the season are "tagged on" to form part of later game weeks giving 2 or more teams an extra fixture in that game week. Some teams play twice in the same GW essentially.

    Why do games get postponed?
Firstly there are "planned postponements"; these are the teams which contest the League Cup Final, and FA Cup Quarter and Semi Finals. The reason is that normal league games are planned for these 3 weekends and any teams fortunate enough to have progressed to the very last stages of these cups will have a league game to re-arrange. Unplanned postponements (weather, security alerts etc) are more rare but still occur sometimes.

    Why are they important?
The main reason is that new chips introduced last season Triple Captain and Bench Boost can significantly increase your points output if you have players playing twice in a game week. Imagine if this week was a DGW and one of your "big hitters" had Swansea and Sunderland at home in the same week, you would probably use your Triple Captain chip? The DGW's with more fixtures are ideal for using your Bench Boost chip. Some FPL players will use wildcards and hits to get as close to 15 playing players those weeks; it's like getting points from 30 players instead of 11, potentially trebling your output. Last season 150+ points was quite common in the big DGW of GW34 when Bench Boost was widely played.

    When will they be?
No-one knows when they will be or ho many extra fixtures will be in them. All we know at the moment is there will be two games tagged in somewhere for the League Cup finalists. Additional games to be fitted in due to FA Cup could be a small as 6 and large as 12 (no-one knows until the games are finalised and the 3rd round hasn't even been played yet). Additional
games for weather etc are unknown but lower these days due to milder winters and better technology / organisation around Premier League grounds and pitches. European competitions are one of there main drivers around when additional league games can be played.

    What are the risks?
Due to DGW only being announced fairly late, they are difficult to plan for. There might not be many fixtures and these spread over a few weeks, or there could be loads of games shoehorned into one or two weeks. The makes hanging on to your second wildcard a bit of a balancing act; if you need it now, should you use it, our potentially save it to set up your team for the DGWs? You can also "destroy" your squad (and value) by focussing solely on the ripe potential of DGW(s) in transferring out great assets that you cannot afford to buy back.

How many games and DGWs will there be?
There will be at least 8 games and as many as 14 games to be re-scheduled for the domestic cup games. The PL will fit these in when they can. Extended involvement in European competition makes it harder for games to be re-arranged involving Man C, Arsenal, Leicester, Man U & Spurs, as these play on mid-week evenings, when the re-arranged league games need to be slotted in.

    Summary
Whatever happens, be assured of a feverish time in FPL world when DGWs are announced. Plans will be made, argued about, torn-up, put back together and cause you more stress than moving house, moving job and getting married all in the same week! Carefully planned for, and with a great slice of luck they can really make a huge difference to your season. Good luck!

If I remember correctly the DGWs of last season proved to be very unpredictable regarding player rotation. No guarantee that a player will play both games.

        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Quite right for you to point this out, thanks. There was some rotation indeed, but most FPL players were taking a "punt" on getting as may of their squad of 15 with two pictures to maximise points, even when rotation was taken into consideration

    2. Stokelona

      7 years, 4 months ago

Good summary, thanks. Wish I hadn't wasted my bench boost gameweek 1, but I'll have to try and use my all out attack in a clever way instead and hope for no clean sheets

        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

You can still use 2nd Wildcard or hits to get potentially 11 players with 2 games in a DGW. The hits scenario can work just as well as Wildcard as players have to use the WC the week before using the Bench Boost in the DGW as you can't use 2 chips is same week. This introduces and bigger element of risk on WC has some of your players can get injured the week leading up to the DGW.

2 Questions to make the right decision. Kane is 13.8% owned and aguero is 20.7% owned so that means Kane is the differential. Ignoring that,
Who would you rather have when city face spurs?:

    B. Aguero

Sorry meant to say the current front 3 play for teams who generally score more.

Was debating this too but worried about Friend game time. Do you think he'll start?

Have there been any reports on whether Ozil likely to play v Bournemouth and Alonso v Spurs?

Benteke (c) is tempting me. Here's why...

    - Big Sam's first home game, crowd will be up and they need a win.
    - Swansea are absolute muck
    - Possibly still on pens and the focal point of the Palace attack
    - Swansea concede lots of headed goals
    - Swansea last three aways has seen three double digit hauls for opposition striker (Kane, Rondon, Negredo). All physical strikers too.
    - Zaha last game before AFCoN, creator-in-chief wanting to put on a show before leaving?

Team news here says he should play. Bored of captaining Ibra to be honest and don't have Alexis.

He'll either start or not play you'd think, so not a huge risk

Plan was to dump Siggy for Walcott come next week as he then has two weeks recovery and swa, BUR, WAT. But should I rather do Siggy -> Lallana this week for a -4?

    a) Hold siggy this week, get Walcott/Lallana for free next week

    b) Siggy -> Lallana (-4)

Tbh I'd probably pull the trigger if I was in your position. Swansea are just too bad a team to own players from.

    GTG 🙂 ?

    Foster
    Brunt - Pieters - Martina*
    Sanchez (v) - Siggy - Lallana - J. Rodriguez
    Ibra - Aguero (c) - Lukaku

Bench: Jaku* - de Roon - Francis - Amat*
    1FT - 0.1 itb

I was thinking of doing Martina ► Friend for free .. Should I do it or save 🙂 ?
