The Watchlist Updated – Defenders

News of Nathan Ake’s potential return to parent club Chelsea postponed yesterday’s publication of our latest Watchlist article. Twenty-four hours later, Ake’s departure has now been confirmed, with a far-reaching effect on Fantasy Premier League managers.

Ake was found in 9.8% of FPL squads having been acquired by more than 287,000 managers since Gameweek 13.

Previously ranked in our top five heading into the weekend, Ake’s return to the Chelsea squad has now seen him ousted from our Watchlist – at least until we gain insight into his role in Antonio Conte’s squad.

It’s presumed that Ake will return as back-up across the central defensive positions and, possibly even provide competition for the 8.9% owned Marcos Alonso at left wing-back. Certainly Conte has suggested as much…

“Ake gives me important options, because we are playing with three central defenders. He can play on the left, he can play in the middle. Also it’s important to see during a training session if he can play as a wing-back.”

Alonso’s stock takes a knock amidst such chatter: the Spaniard was already toppled at the summit of our rankings with a more testing schedule ahead, but now also falls below team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta with confidence dented.

We can only await developments and perhaps comment from Conte ahead of the Gameweek 21 visit to Leicester City.

With new uncertainty in the Chelsea defensive roster, Spurs’ Danny Rose is now ranked as the most desirable heavy-hitter option, with Azpilicueta and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin trailing.

Priced at 6.0 and owned by a modest 8.3%, Rose has become a more significant factor in the Spurs attack of late and has also been delegated dead-ball duties from the right side.

The one caveat remains ill-discipline – he continues to accumulate yellow cards at an alarming rate, having picked up his eighth caution of the season against Chelsea, ensuring that he is just two yellow cards from a two-match ban.

Rose climbs to second in our rankings but trails West Bromwich Albion’s Chris Brunt at the top.

Having averaged 5.1 points per game over the last nine Gameweeks, playing predominantly “out of position” as a winger, Brunt claims top spot thanks to his attacking promise and an array of favourable fixtures (tot, SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU, CPL).

He has registered two goals and three assists in his last seven outings, and, given that the Baggies have failed to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 12, his output could spike if Tony Pulis’ men can convert the upcoming schedule into defensive returns.

Everton’s Leighton Baines. is a major climber in our latest update.

An established Fantasy favourite in previous seasons, Baines is now back on our radar as a result of reclaiming penalty duties for the Toffees and with an obliging schedule ahead.

Setting us back 5.4, Baines has also earned two assists over the last five Gameweeks to underline a rejuvenated attacking promise.

Ronald Koeman’s side have also registered clean sheets in two of their last three matches, and with kind fixtures following the Gameweek 21 clash against Manchester City (cpl, sto, BOU, mid, SUN), Baines’ recent form could be maintained.

A soft upcoming schedule (swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL) also affords Hector Bellerin a notable rise up our standings, although priced at 6.5 in FPL, the Spaniard may struggle to divert traffic away from the likes of the cheaper Brunt and Baines in particular.

Bellerin is also currently an injury doubt, having missed Arsenal’s FA Cup tie with Preston; details on that setback and the prognosis remain vague.

Manchester United’s Phil Jones retains a mid-place ranking as he continues to offer value in a much-improved backline.

With Eric Bailly absent at the Africa Cup of Nations, Jones’ security of start has been boosted. The injury to Marcos Rojo in United’s FA Cup win over Reading does require monitoring, however. The Argentine a big factor in the recent form shown by Jones and Jose Mourinho’s defence.

With Ake now absent from our ladder, Charlie Daniels has become more difficult to ignore as an option in the Bournemouth ranks.

Outstanding recent form is somewhat countered by an increasing ownership (10.3%) and a 5.2 price point which appears rather lavish for a member of Eddie Howe’s rearguard.

Nonetheless, Daniels has proven to be a hugely effective asset bombing forward from left-back, having returned a goal and two assists in his previous two outings.

Daniels’ short-term fixtures (hul, WAT CPL) promise further returns and perhaps warrant that extra outlay.

In the mid to long-term, however, Adam Smith, at 4.7 is now back on the radar as an option and a cheaper alternative. Smith may well replace Daniels in our rankings once those imminent attractive ties pass by.

Given Southampton’s outstanding fixtures, Virgil van Dijk should be claiming a higher position in our rankings.

However, recent form and the continued speculation surrounding the future and starting role of Jose Fonte creates concern.

Van Dijk is an outstanding individual and has recently shown his threat in attacking areas with two goals in his last three outings in all competitions. However, Claude Puel’s side are without a shut-out in their last four, including their recent FA Cup tie with Norwich City.

Should Fonte remain frozen out, Maya Yoshida, at just 4.2, could also become an active, albeit riskier, alternative to cover the Saints’ schedule.

Middlesbrough are currently displaying more prosperous form having shut-out Leicester City and FA Cup opponents Sheffield Wednesday in their last two.

In Calum Chambers they boast a 4.4 option who will likely earn renewed attention in the light of the fall-out from Ake’s recall.

Aitor Karanka’s men have kept clean sheets in three of their last four at the Riverside in the Premier League, with the Arsenal loanee picking up bonus points in two of those matches.

Middlesbrough offer home fixtures against West Ham, West Brom and Everton, along with a trip to Watford in their next five.

A reminder that you will find our full current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button in the right slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

Very possible if city can increase their possession stats to where pep wants them to be.
He doesn't want to defend but the players he has inherited seem unable to keep the ball for long enough in games which is making peps tactics look rubbish.

I wouldn't write off stones yet but I wouldn't be getting him in yet either

No think it was self contained. I do appreciate they made a Hollywood film with ideas about black holes and space, etc, however ultimately they didn't break far enough away from Hollywood. A lot of that probably came from influences from the studio tho. Would like to see more films on similar subject matter.

It's a top film from one of the best directors of our time, if you liked Inception, Dark Night, Memento etc, you will like it. If you prefer to watch films like Fast & the furious 19 then don't bother, but it's high IMDB rating is justified imo

I find this argument regarding Nolan's films a bit tired. I've enjoyed his movies, some more than others, but it doesn't make you a philistine if you don't consider Inception some kind of masterpiece. It's a way to negate criticism of the film by simply saying "you don't get it."

How is this for a back 4 if I want to play 4 defenders every week?

    Randolph
    Walker, Daniels, Baines, Alonso

Is it too much or is it fine considering that I won't be benching them?

    Rest of team

    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Snodgrass
    Ibra, Benteke

    Bench: Jaku, Phillips, Borini, Kingsley

I don't have an issue with your 4-4-2 per se, but I'm guessing you rotate between Snodgrass and Phillips? That leaves too much money on the bench for me. If Phillips or Snodgrass were De Roon/4.3 the money could be used to upgrade someone else.

      1. Blunderland

I agree. That's exactly what I do but that's the way I've always played the game. I like having flexibility so I can play the fixtures better. The thing is there is a massive gap between the premium strikers

        Starting at Lukaku 9.5
And the budget strikers. Between 6 and 7. Not much room in between. Defoe I'm not convinced. And like others mentioned benteke is pretty much useless. So that leaves people like Negredo, Gray, Wilson. Remy could be a great option if he starts. Strikers are overrated this year imo. If you look the defenders are basically on par with points besides Ibra and Costa

        1. Pierce34
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

Fair enough - yes, that's a good point about the strikers, unless you can stretch to Lukaku at the very least then I agree there's no point. It's why I've gone 3-5-2 myself with Ibra and Costa, and Phillips as my cheapest midfielder.

I used to be more similar to you last year, i.e. leaving flexibility to play the fixtures, but got frustrated with leaving points on the bench too much. How are you getting on so far this year?

I was having a terrible year before I switched my focus to having a more balanced squad. I had aguero for both of his -1s and got frustrated with the heavy hitters blanking. Since I've changed formation I've risen from 1.5 million to 900k in the last 6 GWs. I know it's terrible but the start I've had, I'm just glad to be in the top mil

    1. Keep Negredo (saving an ft)~ Good fixtures.
    2. Move for Giroud. (Slight doubt regarding his starting status but surely he gets the nod at this rate)~ Great fixtures, in top form and will get loads of chances.

Given the nature of his upcoming fixtures and Giroud's current form I see no reason for Wenger to drop him. They'll be playing against a deep block in the next three and will need Giroud, Sánchez false nine only seems fully effective against more expansive sides than your Swanseas, Burnleys or Watfords.

Remember Wellbeck is coming back. Giroud still a better option than Walcott, who is too unreliable to be serious fantasy prospect in my opinion.

Before the Walcott injury~ Alxis played up top with Wally wide. Giroud didn't start once this season.

Then once Wally got injured ~ Alexis moved out wide and Giroud came in.
The question is.. are Arsenal better with Alexis up top supported by Walcott or with Giroud up top.

I am guessing that Wenger will stick with Giroud and I will prob bring him in but it isn't straightforward.

Last year Sanchez up to failed. Giroud has been a lone striker albeit on and off for more than the last three games and Wenger has been singing his praises

Sanchez has been fantastic up top this season.
A bit like what Suarez did for Liverpool.
Arsenal seemed more fluid too with so much speed etc with Wally in the mix as well.

The prob with Giroud is that he seems to hold up play a little. He is not as mobile as Sanchez obviously so the whole style of play changes..

He has proved time and again that he is a deadly finisher though and I think his form cant be ignored at this point.

Kane is possibly the best differential in the game right now. Penalties, proven league form, recent form, lone striker in an in form top 6 team. Giroud deserved his place in anyone's team but if Wally returns you're in trouble. Kane is undroppable and a great way to rise up the ranks with Costa and Ibra taking up most front two slots. Believe in the chin. I am.

Yup which is why I had him in my wc team from the start. But Girouds form and price are tempting. Also thinking Rose instead of Kane for a spurs double up with Alli. Dam, now I'm really confused. Thanks ! 🙂

Ali is the definitely the sensible route but as you say Rose/Walker are the more important long term options. I'm avoiding Ali because every shot he's had has gone in recently. I know it sounds mad but Kane shoots more when he's in form and I'll take the most likely to score when Eriksen is capable of upstaging Ali's assist and bonus potential. Penalties are always nice. Plus that chin...

If you search out Arseblog, he has some very good quotes from Wenger re Giroud where he talks up his form and running with people when they are in this sort of form where everything is going for them, this was specific about Giroud.

The shirt is his to lose in the next month I'd say.

Keep seeing people mention Welbeck is back, he's missed almost a year with a big injury, can't see him being rushed back when you consider the amount of options available to Wenger, Walcott has done well but he's another who doesn't have to be rushed straight back in, the biggest threat to Giroud's place in the next 3 is infact Giroud, if his level of performance drops then he'll be out again, can't ignore that he was brought it after b2b shocking displays at Everton and City, he's on fire at the moment and Wenger won't remove him (for now) IMO.

    Here's my team this week with 0ft & 0.7itb:

    Valdes (injured)
    Alonso, Rose, Pieters
    Sanchez, Alli, Lallana, Stanislas
    Ibra, Costa, Giroud (c)

    Foster, Phillips, Jones, Lovren

Is Valdes out & Heaton in worth a -4 hit. Burnley have Soton at home this week & Soton are very poor on the road. Heaton good chance of a cs & usually Heaton gets 3 baps when there's a cs so the hit should pay off. Thoughts & thanks.

I'd be tempted towards Barnes & Wally over Defoe & DR? I'd try to bump Lallana up to Coutinho by reducing the defence a bit? Nyom over Evans maybe? Cahill>Baines? gl

Cheers bud. Want to keep a che defender. Kept the extra funds to do lallana > coutinho once he's 100% back. Barnes and wally a good shout, bit of a gamble tho with the ars starting eleven

    Defence check anyone?

    Grant, Pickford
    Cedric, Azpi, Kosielny, Brunt, Baines

Not having Rose, Daniels or Boro isn't doing my trigger finger any good. Shifting out Azpi just doesn't feel right. He's such a beast.

Ridiculous waste of money if you're not playing 532 or 523 every week

Azpi, Brunt and Baines are three great defenders to be starting every week. Personally I'd be looking to downgrade the other two (Koscielny not immediately given the fixtures).

It's close but I prefer Brunt myself.
