The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 22

A day for differentials.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley are the only two players with more than 10% ownership to hit double-digits.

Firmino was teetering on the edge prior to the today’s deadline – owned by just over 456,000 FPL managers or 10.6% – the Brazilian had shed 340,000 since Gameweek 16.

Such losses are understandable, sparked by a dismal run of paltry returns. A single goal over ten barren Gameweeks – his strike in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City – did little to stem a tide of rejection. With Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana thriving, Firmino owners were switching allegiance or looking elsewhere as rival heavy-hitters delivered.

Today’s 14-points will reverse matters, for now at least. That fifth double-figure haul for Firmino ironically arrived on a day that saw Philippe Coutinho make a return to the Liverpool starting line-up. Withdrawn on 65 minutes, his comeback was curtailed as he gave way to allow his compatriot to take centre-stage.

While his two goals were not enough to save Liverpool from defeat, Firmino’s own Fantasy stock is revived, just as thousands were making or considering the move for his Brazilian team-mate.

But Coutinho’s early withdrawal has already proved enough to give some early adopters the jitters. Meanwhile, after suffering a third successive blank, Lallana has now returned just a single goal and an assist in six starts.

Based on early transfer activity, both are facing ownership losses over the extended gap to Gameweek 23, with this shifting affection from one Liverpool asset to another typical of behaviour this season.

Two prolonged spells of form from Coutinho’s and Lallana have come close to resolving the argument but, in truth, we look unlikely to ever settle on one of Klopp’s midfield as a dependable “solution”.

Perhaps the key question should be whether we should overlook them altogether.

Two draws and a defeat has stalled the Liverpool title bid, while over the last four Gameweeks, their attacking numbers are settled in mid-table. They face Chelsea next.

Sadio Mane’s absence appears to be a key factor and, arguably, until his return, we should reserve judgement, regardless of Firmino’s flurry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Did Hazard to KDB last night. Had 2 free anyway and fancy him over next three to outscore.

Feel slightly odd about that now.

Especially as Hazard is my captain today...

I checked the fixtures, only want him for next three, will switch back to Hazard after that. They don't play a European game until after that and he's playing well and fully fit.

I know it's a bit early but how is she looking for next GW chaps?

    Heaton
    Rose, Brunt, Baines
    Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, Phillips
    Ibra, Giroud, Lukaku

    (Jakup)(Stanislas, Daniels, M.Wilson)

Intend to do Daniels + Stanislas > Alonso + Davies once Chelsea get over the next couple of dicey games.

How to fix that defense? 1FT, 0.3 idb. (Don't want to sell Kun)

    Randolph, Jaku
    Alonso, Evans, Holebas*, Ake*, Amat*
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Lallana, Phillips, Fletcher
    Kun, Ibra, Giroud

    a) Ake, Holebas > Chambers, Funes Mori for -4 (exact funds)
    b) Holebas > Jones
    c) something else

I would be inclined to keep Holebas. He only misses one league game and will be straight back in team, unlike the other two.

Transfer one of Amat or Ake out for Chambers. Job done.

      unless you're playing 4 4 2 most weeks, ignore

tricky one though, lot of people find themselves with phillips and Stanilas and no aguero, therefore much more cash to spend in defence

I brought Funes Mori in as my 4th defender but will probably bench him this week! Baines a bit trickier to bench though I guess! Depend on you mids/att, can you for 433 or 442

I wrote a post which got picked up as hot topic (I think it is still there).

I promoted the virtues of owning both Brunt and McCauley for this run of fixtures.

Under the post most people were dismissive but they scored 25 points between them.

Are any of you considering the double up - reasons in hot topic post.

Started off with mcauley and jumped on the Brunt wagon as soon as he was back but lack of cs made me get rid of mcauley. For the good fixtures I would double up but with brunt and nyom

Tip for owning Lukaku, you have to keep him for the whole stretch of his good fixtures. He will blank in some easy games but if you keep faith he will eventually score well. If you keep bringing him in and out he will troll you hard

                save

you already have a benching headache, why bring in a 4th good defender and you then have to bench one?

your side is good to go

Who will score more next 4-5 GWs?

              A) Lallana and Defoe

              B) Kane and Friend/Pieters (rotating)

I really wanna keep hold of Aguero as no one else in my ml has him but I have no Spurs players. Does anyone think Spurs form will start to slide and city will start to perform again?

attacking wise they should be fine, defensively without Vert and maybe Toby I would probably avoid for now

spurs are a different beast at the lane

I probably wouldn't get a defender in of there's now, but wouldn't rush to get rid of one either

                  nice few fixtures

                  nice team

I would just do a sideways move given you can

                  friend for Chambers say

or Jones for Valencia given attacking threat against Hull

                Morning all.

Lots of big hitters to come today!

Not sure what to do with Hazard whatever he scores today. Would be an easy way to get Alli or Eriksen in.

Mkhitaryan is probably the way to do it but he has Hull next so I'll endure the pain one more GW.

I saw that post - just not sure about City myself, Pep worries me a little.

Nice fixtures though so I can certainly see the attraction.

the rapid inconsistency is certainly a concern

but how tight positions 2nd to 6th are is meaning teams can't rotate their best players at the moment, every point counts

                      and Chelsea have two toughies

Toby hasn't been confirmed out. Was just a precaution apparently as the hamstring was tight.

Taking a hit for a defender is much maligned on here. For a one or two week punt it's not worth it, but well worth it looking long term.

ie Brunt for this set of fixtures, Coleman/Baines likewise

don't keep holding to, say, Amat because you don't want to take a hit

                  Agreed.

It's hard to measure whether a hit has been successful but if it's for the long term I think you can justify it.

                Heaton, Pickford.
                Alonso, Walker, Jones, Holebas, Amat.
                Eriksen, Lallana, Sanchez, Phillips, Whelan.
                Ibra, Giroud, Kane.

                0.0m, 2ft.
Thinking~ Funes Mori in for Holebas.. (and possibly)
                Davies in for Whelan

Funes Mori more nailed than Holgate it seems..
Even with Davies potentially losing his starting status this latter move could also work out well.

                Thoughts?
